DELIVERING AT
THE BIRTHPLACE AT CASTLE ROCK
The Comforts of Home
A ‘FIVE SENSES’ Experience Techniques such as guided imagery and relaxing music can help you stay calm as you labor. Aromatherapy also can help relieve tension and promote relaxation. The BirthPlace at Castle Rock Adventist Hospital supports and encourages the use of these techniques as part of your birthing experience.
The expertise of a trained medical center The BirthPlace at Castle Rock Adventist Hospital offers comfortable, beautifully appointed labor and delivery suites, and restful rooms for postpartum and recovery that feature huge windows with panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains, with plenty of room for your new baby and your family. BirthPlace amenities include: • Flat-screen TVs • Wireless Internet • Two rooms with jetted tubs plus wireless, waterproof monitors so moms can labor in water • Crystal chandeliers • Aromatherapy • An array of birthing assistance tools such as birthing balls and squatting bars • A cesarean section camera that allows mom to view the birth • Gourmet in-room dining from Manna, the hospital’s on-site restaurant, featuring fresh and healthy menu options; there’s also a Nourishment Center complete with a refrigerator, ice machine and microwave on the unit.
Rooming In
At The BirthPlace, we encourage new moms to keep their babies with them — a practice known as “rooming in.” We also strive to keep mom, dad, and baby together during testing and also after a C-section. Four big benefits of rooming in: 1 Enhanced bonding between mother and infant 2 Increased frequency of breastfeeding 3 Reduced crying; stabilized temperature and blood glucose levels 4 Reduced risk of SIDS and other newborn complications
Expertise and Compassion At The BirthPlace at Castle Rock Adventist Hospital, you don’t have to choose between friendliness and professionalism. While all of our nurses have the latest healthcare training, they are carefully selected for their warmth, too!
PRENATAL CLASSES
Preparing for your journey
Expert Nursing Care
You can rest easy knowing that you and your baby will receive the best possible care before, during, and after delivery with a highly trained nursing staff and the most modern equipment available. Our BirthPlace nurses are trained to consider all of your needs—physical, emotional, and spiritual. And through our mom-approved couplet model, you’ll have the same nursing team from the moment you arrive until the moment you and your baby go home. Our nurses strive to have moms and babies making skin-toskin contact immediately after birth and can help new mothers initiate breastfeeding as soon as possible. Our BirthPlace nurses are certified in: • Advanced Cardiac Life Support • The Neonatal Resuscitation Program • Electronic Fetal Monitoring • S.T.A.B.L.E., an initiative designed to reduce infant mortality through assessment and care modules including Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood pressure, Lab work, and Emotional support
Prenatal classes are an empowering tool in preparing for labor and delivery — and they can help both moms and dads feel more confident about what happens after baby comes home. Castle Rock Adventist Hospital offers FREE classes to get you up to speed, including: Childbirth (4-week series) and Childbirth Express (one 8-hour class): Discover the tools and techniques of Lamaze, and get the information necessary to make informed decisions about the birth of your baby. Baby Care: Learn techniques to help care for your newborn, from diapering and swaddling to bathing. Breastfeeding: Learn basic techniques and tips to help ensure successful breastfeeding.

Services to Suit Your
Every Need So often, it’s the special touches that truly make the difference in creating your best memories. At Castle Rock Adventist Hospital, we have added many special services to enhance your stay at The BirthPlace.
Did you know? Your breast milk changes while you’re feeding your baby. It turns from a watery bluish color when you first begin to a thicker, fattier milk near the end that provides your baby with the nourishment needed for growth.
Nourishing Your Little One — and You
One of the most exquisite — and one of the most important — moments is feeding your new baby. Whatever feeding method you choose, our BirthPlace nurses are specially trained to support your decision and help you understand everything you need to know, from how often and how much your baby should be eating to how to encourage your baby to latch properly, and what to do if nursing is painful. We offer lactation services while you’re in the hospital as well as after you go home, on both an informal or private consultation basis. And we haven’t forgotten the mom either. Manna Restaurant, our in-house gourmet restaurant that uses all-natural and seasonal ingredients, prepares all meals for new moms. Family members are welcome to dine in Manna Restaurant or pick up coffee and quick to-go items at the Manna Market, which features freshly created cuisine. Manna strives to elevate the experience of hospital dining by using seasonal items supplied by local vendors such as Lombardi Brothers Meats, Boulder Natural Meats, Continental Sausage, Larkspur Busy Bee Farm honey, Jumpin Good Goat Dairy, and Yumbana Gluten Free Bake Shoppe.
Capturing the Experience
Record those first precious moments of your baby’s life with professional photography by Bella Baby Photography. An experienced photographer can visit you and your newborn during your stay to take photographs in a private, relaxed setting using soft natural light and no backdrops. Sessions last just 15 to 20 minutes, and you can view a slideshow of your newborn, choose your print options — such as full-color, sepia, or black and white — order prints, and pay from the convenience of your room that same day. Pictures also will be available online via secure password for 14 days so that family and friends can see your little bundle of joy.
FOR YOUR BABY
While most babies will never need the services of a neonatal intensive care unit, it’s good to know we’re here just in case. At The BirthPlace at Castle Rock Adventist Hospital, your newborn will be in good hands in our Level II neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The NICU provides specialized care for premature infants as well as full-term babies who may need care, including: • Monitoring for apnea conditions and support for breathing issues • IVs or special medications • An incubator or other assistance to maintain proper body temperature • Feeding assistance Our NICU staff includes a neonatal nurse practitioner and respiratory therapist, available to provide expert care 24/7.

•
A camera and/or video camera
•

•
Toiletries (don’t forget hair clips to use during labor if you need them)
•
Comfortable homecoming outfits for you and the baby (maternity clothes that you wore during your second trimester will most likely fit best, as it takes time for your weight to return to normal)

•
Any items that will help you feel calm and relaxed, such as family pictures or your favorite pillow
•
Cellphone and charger so that you have your contact list and access to update your social media sites
Did you know? Being born at a higher altitude can make breathing even more difficult for some infants. Just another reason expert neonatal care counts.

CREATING YOUR BIRTH PLAN 5 Questions t oC
onsider
Creating a detailed birth plan allows you to express what’s most important to you regarding the birth of your child. Sharing it with your caregivers in advance gives them a better understanding of your preferences so that they can help you achieve the birth experience you envision and also let you know when plans need to change to ensure the safety of you and your baby. Here are five questions to consider as you create your plan.
What are your wishes during a normal labor and delivery? Considerations such as labor procedures, pain management, fetal monitoring, and position during delivery should be contemplated.
Who will assist during the birth?
Do you want a doula? A nurse-midwife? An OB/GYN? What role will your partner play?
What kind of atmosphere do you prefer for your labor and delivery? Would you like music playing, soft lighting, or the use of special focal points?
Get Help With Your Plan Your Birth Concierge at Castle Rock Adventist Hospital can work with you to draft a clear and detailed birth plan that will help your birth team better understand your wishes and preferences. To schedule a private consultation with our BirthPlace Concierge, call 720-455-0355.
What are your preferences for your baby — both immediately after birth and in the following hours and days? Who will cut the umbilical cord? How do you intend to feed your newborn (bottle or breastfeeding)? Would you prefer to room in exclusively or have your baby in the nursery part of the time?
What do you want to happen in the event that your plans need to change? For example, if you need a cesarean, do you have any special wishes?
