PROJECT BACKGROUND This studio revolves around a fundamental question of our profession: How do architects transform a topography into a cultural context that accommodates our daily life—praxis ? We will search for an answer to this comprehensive question by questioning three architectural notions that form urban life: landscape, façade and urban space. The questioning shall be done through three design exercises in different scales. These exercises will ask you to rethink Clemson from a critical standpoint in view of the network of relationships that identify it as a small city. In simple terms, this studio aims to re-invent Clemson in consideration of its two unique characteristics: its landscape and student life.

The three notions we will deal with within the course –landscape, façade and urban space- represent three different territories that need to be restored and improved in Clemson: The relationship of the city with the surrounding lakes, the importance of the facades of the most prominent buildings in Downtown Clemson as both climatic and social tools, and the possibilities to create new urban entities in which architecture and public spaces don’t hider each other. PROGRAMMATIC APPROACH As it usually occurs on sites with the high urban potential this one has, the program of the building (or buildings) to be raised here as an open question. Therefore, the architectural strategy should be intimately tied to the program in one way or the other. Even if it includes different programmatic elements -such as commercial, residential or cultural uses-, configuring some sort of Mixed-use, their different proportions will be essential for the final result. Consequently, the first step to start the design process will be a programmatic statement that shows the potential of the site. Alternative and experimental approaches regarding program are encouraged, while too deterministic ones -making conventional choices by default- should be avoided. In any case there should be a reasoned narrative that supports the programmatic statement. TEAM WORK For this last exercise we won’t just have more time to reach a higher level of development and detailing than on the previous ones. Also, the exercise will be developed entirely as TEAMS, which will be composed by TWO STUDENTS. The teams will be a great opportunity to share a lot of the productive duties of the projects and, therefore, to reach the expected level of detailing. But also, and foremost, they will be an opportunity for debating and articulating ideas in a more critical and complex way.
PROJECT BACKGROUND During this semester we have explored the overarching idea of Rethinking Clemson in two very different projects, using distinctive urban strategies. Firstly, with the Rowing house, we tried to reconnect Clemson as an urban structure with its surrounding –currently overlooked- water landscape. Secondly, with the facade redesign for Clemson Campus Views, we have approached the city’s urban core from a critical perspective by proposing alternatives to the conventional ways of producing urban image. During the last part of the semester we will develop a new strategy to rethink Clemson that is a continuation to the previous ones. Briefly, the last project aims to carry the urban riddle in Clemson to a different level of complexity. The site chosen for the exercise is one of the most strategic spots for the future development of Clemson as a denser city. A site which promises a connection between the structure of the city and the structure of the Campus. The site is located to the East of the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and across the street from Riggs Soccer field, between the Old Greenville Highway and Addison Lane, on the current location of a parking lot. Not only its position in between key elements of the Town-Campus complex, also its topographic conditions make it highly visible almost from everywhere in the vicinity. In these conditions it seems obvious that the incredible potential of this site alone to Rethink Clemson to affect which type of urban and collective identity Clemson can have, through architecture and design. 7

The Gallery of Clemson is a multi-functional gathering space for the Clemson community, Trinity Church, and the students of Clemson University. Housing a flexible program with a healthy cafe, transitional gallery space, rentable venue and outdoor movie screen, we wanted a building that would allow transformation. Movable doors aid in opening the interior to the outside, further emphisizing the notion of flexible space. By sinking the building into the ground and utilizing the topography as amphitheater seating, the building respects the adjacent church and strengthens the connection to downtown. The Gallery creates an outdoor oasis for studying, relaxing, and reconnecting with nature while still producing revenue for Trinity Church via rentable indoor space for baquets and weddings along with underground parking. The Gallery serves to bring the first nature oriented, and artistic community space to downtown Clemson.

THE PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO ALLOW FOR THIS TO HAPPEN, BOTH WITHIN THE OPEN SPACE, BUT ALSO ALONG THE TERRACES THAT LOOK OVER THE OPEN SPACE. TENTS CAN BE SET UP ALL ALONG AND THE DESIGN ALLOWS FOR THE MARKET TO HAVE THE INFRASTRUCTURE TO EFFICIENTLY AND EFFECTIVELY FUNCTION.

FOOTBALL IS BIG IN CLEMSON, AND WITH SUCH A SOLID FANBASE, FANS GO ALL OUT FOR THEIR TIGERS. WITH PRIME LOCATION TO CAMPUS AND THE STADIUM, IT WAS NECESSARY FOR US TO INCORPORATE THIS USER GROUP AND ALLOW THEM TO USE THE SPACE TO ITS FULL POTENTIAL. BOTH PARKING ON THE NORTH SIDE OR MAIN CENTRAL AREA OF THE SITE CAN BE USED FOR TAILGATING. THE RESTAURANT WOULD ALSO PLAY A BIG ROLE ON FOOTBALL SATURDAYS.

The goal of our design is to create a neighborhood within our mixed-use building. By developing a transitional space for recent gradsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; journeys into entrepreneurship, the program establishes a collaborative working environment. This includes studio spaces, manufacturing spaces, and social residential common space. The plaza and retail spaces draw in the community to help support the innovative process. Our buliding satisfies the needs of the community with a health food grocer and business needs by drawing in investors. In response, the architectural form expresses these guiding beliefs through innovative forms while maintaining a familiar atmosphere.
