LIVING ENVIRONMENTS: GRADUATE STUDENT HOUSING FOR CLEMSON UNIVERSITY

Clemson University School of Architecture | 2018 Comprehensive Studio

WILLIAM MATHIS VISHNU MAYA SREENATH THE COURT | GROUP 12 The Court is a high density graduate student housing project designed to accommodate the graduate student population at Clemson University. Located at the eastern end of the recent Douthit Hills expansion, the Court acts as an end point to a significant axis crossing Clemson’s campus. Formally a simple “U-Shaped” building, The Court frames a large courtyard. The entire building is lifted up off of its site by means of a large plinth and a series of columns. The space created below becomes a massive multi-use public space which stretches beyond the footprint of the building into the surrounding landscape, connecting the courtyard within the rest of the campus. The facades of The Court are treated differently based upon both their orientation and their relationship with the courtyard. Walls facing away from the courtyard are turned fourtyfive degrees to enhance view as well as allow for more dynamic natural lighting. Facades facing the courtyard remain parallel to the building, creating an introverted expression.

YAGE CHEN JULIAN OWENS 3 POINTS | GROUP 13 The design of 3 Points Student Life Center seeks to take advantage of and maintain the established balance found on the Western Edge of Clemson’s campus. The site presents an ideal environment for housing, as healthy living is the common factor that brings the surrounding programs together. 3 Points introduces housing to the site in a way, which seamlessly connects to the existing conditions, that introduce a healthy, thoughtful and exciting life to Clemson’s campus.

JIMMY WOODS CHRIS SANDKUHLER THE HIVE | GROUP 14

SITEOur project, “The Hive,” is a proposal that attempts to address two major issues that affect not on Clemson University, but many universities across

PLANthe US: an ever-changing and ever-expanding built campus and a less than ideal parking strategy. Our proposal addresses the aforementioned issues

through first presenting a prefabricated, modularized residence hall design that allows for disassembly and then reassembly on a different site if the expanding campus ever requires a different program for our site. Therefore, rather than simply demolishing our graduate student housing buildings as the university would typically do, it can re-use and re-purpose the structures. We address parking through the design of two parking decks, a more vertical and densified parking strategy than the university’s current method of flat, single-level asphalt lots.

MATTHIAS KELLY TYLER MCKENZIE GATEWAY ROW | GROUP 15 Gateway Row is an on-campus graduate student housing complex at Clemson University. It aims to serve as a beacon for the Graduate School, while meeting the needs of the students by promoting the values of Clemson’s strategic plan, Clemson Forward. The complex is located at one the main campus gateways and is intended to provide a physical presence for the graduate school as well as revitalizing an underutilized area of campus. The user groups of this project include graduate students and visiting scholars, with additional accommodations for both international students and students with families. The complex includes secondary programmatic elements that service each of these unique user groups. This program includes a university daycare facility integrated into the family housing, and an international food market and graduate school studio space integrated into the graduate student housing. The graduate student studio space is meant to be a hub of collaboration where students of all backgrounds come together and share ideas and projects related to their fields of study.

YIN XIA JIAYI SHEN BETWEEN THE BLOCKS | GROUP 16 A new community of graduate housing will be built at Thornhill Village in Clemson. Our program is housing for 300 university members and distributed them into about 200 residential units. According to the analysis of on-campus housing and the trends of student apartments in recent years at Clemson, we find that a reasonable square footage of a 1-bedroom apartment is around 550 square feet, and 800 square feet for a 2 -bedroom apartment. Also, research shows that the proportion of the preference of different numbers of the bedrooms in an apartment. According to this analysis, we decided to make 200 1-bedroom apartments and 50 2-bedroom apartments.
