understood what he needed to do.” One of the team’s top performers could very well be freshman Roland Hakes out of Dutch Fork High School in Irmo, SC. Herbster said he is one of the best in-state prospects to sign with the Clemson distance program in a long time. Hakes won AAAA state championships in cross country as a junior and senior. He ran a personal best of 15:09 on a difficult 5K course. He was a multipletime state champion in track & field as well. “He works hard and is a strong competitor,” Herbster said. “He’ll be a good leader for us, even though he’s only a freshman.” With McCormack out, the onus to step up productivity may fall on red-shirt senior Martin Maloney and sophomore James Dwyer. Maloney scored at both the ACC Championships and Southeast Regionals last year. Dwyer returns as a sophomore after scoring in several meets as a rookie. Both will need to show improvement in their times for the Tigers to take the next step as a program. Travis Christenberry and Stephen Lewandowski are a pair of freshmen who have a chance to contribute in Clemson’s top seven, Herbster said. Christenberry was bronze medalist in 2011 at Florida’s AAAA state championship cross country meet. Lewandowski has run 4:08 in the mile, and was sixth in New Jersey’s Meet of Champions 5K. The two teams will face a tough schedule ahead in the fall of 2012. Clemson opens the season on Aug. 31 at home, but will race against several tough teams out West at the Los Angeles Invitational in September and at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in October in Louisville, KY. The ACC Championships will be held in Blacksburg, VA for the first time later in the month, while the Southeast Regionals will also have a new home in Charlotte, NC. No matter who finds themselves contributing on a consistent basis, Clemson’s young rosters must mature quickly against that type of a schedule. Herbster believes his groups are up to the challenge. “People expect us to fall on the women’s side because we lost Kulik and Ruck, but we can surprise this year. On the men’s side, we need to build the team up. Without Ty in the mix and with some coaching uncertainty at some ACC schools, it’s a great opportunity for our younger guys to step up.”

Building a championship caliber cross country program at Clemson has been a process. Last year, the Clemson women enjoyed their finest fall season in nearly 20 years. Now in year five under Director of Cross Country Lawrence Johnson, he and Associate Head Cross Country Coach Brad Herbster hope to see the men’s program follow suit, while the women continue to climb within the ranks of the Atlantic Coast Conference. It will be a formidable challenge for the Clemson women, who lost 2011 senior leaders Alyssa Kulik and Kim Ruck to graduation. “Our freshmen and sophomores last year learned from Alyssa and Kim, but now they’re going to have to step up and be productive,” Johnson said. “We’re relatively young, probably as young as we’ve been in a while.” One student-athlete with the luxury of experience under her belt is junior Natalie Anthony, who was easily the most improved runner on the Tiger roster a year ago. Anthony will help fill the void left behind by Kulik and Ruck. A native of Randolph, NJ, she was just two spots shy of earning all-region status last fall after helping the Tigers to a fourth-place team finish in Louisville, KY. Anthony was also the team’s No. 3 runner at the ACC Championships, finishing 32nd individually. “Natalie made huge strides last fall and carried it over into track season,” Herbster said. Anthony will receive a boost this fall in the form of 2011 Furman graduate Erin Barker, who will have one year of eligibility with Clemson in cross country and track & field. Barker actually finished six spots ahead of Anthony and was a member of the AllSoutheast Regional Team last fall. Barker was also an All-Southern Conference performer after finishing fourth for the Paladins. Kate Borowicz returns for her senior season. She was strong in cross country last fall before an upand-down track season. Borowicz was 31st at the 2011 ACC Championships and 43rd at the Southeast Regionals, scoring in both important meets for the Tigers. Cara Talty, a junior from Raritan, NJ, transferred into the program last fall and made an impact.
She scored in two meets, including the Southeast Regionals, where she was one spot behind Borowicz. Elyse Borisko is a red-shirt junior who could be a wild card for the Tigers in 2012. She was a consistent scoring threat for Clemson as a freshman in 2010, but had her share of ups and downs in 2011. The Tigers would benefit greatly from more performances like the one she had at the ACC Championships, where she was 40th on Clemson’s home course. The remainder of the Clemson women’s roster will be made up of promising, but unproven red-shirts and sophomores, as well as incoming freshmen. Taylor Miller has drawn rave reviews from the coaching staff, while Easley High School product Emily Lewis will be among the newcomers with a chance to contribute as a first-year freshman. “Emily was one of the quietest recruits you could ever hear of in the ACC,” Herbster said. “She ran 11 flat in the two-mile, which is good in this state at the high school level.” Other newcomers that have a chance to contribute are Lindsey Bellaran and Brianna Feerst, both of whom relocated to Clemson from the state of New Jersey. The Tiger men’s team will have a different look in 2012, largely due to the absence of All-ACC and allregion standout Ty McCormack. He will red-shirt the fall season because he will be studying abroad in China as part of his language & international trade curriculum. McCormack’s loss will be significant, as he placed eighth at the ACC Championships last season and was coming off a solid outdoor track season in the steeplechase. “On the men’s side, guys have to invest themselves more into the program,” Johnson said. A good example of someone who has certainly upped his investment recently is red-shirt sophomore Aaron Ramirez, who improved by leaps and bounds during the outdoor track portion of the 2011-12 academic year. Ramirez finished fourth in the 1500 meters at the ACC Outdoor Championships, and his coaches hope he can carry confidence over from that type of performance into more strenuous cross country races. “Aaron was over-thinking the entire season in cross country,” Herbster said. “He was most nervous for the 10K at Southeast Regionals, but that turned out to be his best race because he finally relaxed and

HEAD COACH LAWRENCE JOHNSON Lawrence Johnson is in his fifth season as Clemson’s director of track & field and cross country. Under his leadership, the men’s team has shown consistent progress, while the women’s program has blossomed into the ACC’s best and one of the elite-level programs in the nation. Clemson has swept the ACC indoor and outdoor team championships in women’s track & field each of the past three seasons. Johnson also swept ACC and Southeast Region Coach-of-the-Year honors from 2010-12. In just four years, Johnson has coached 82 AllAmericans and 48 ACC event champions. His athletes have been named the ACC meet most valuable performers on the track or in the field 11 times, while four have been named Athlete of the Year by the conference. Johnson’s athletes have continued to establish school records as the program elevates to new heights. Thirty-four of the current school indoor or outdoor men’s and women’s records have been set under Johnson’s watch. The Clemson women’s program earned topfive team finishes at the NCAA Championships in 2012. The indoor team tied for fifth place, while the outdoor team produced a program-best fourth-place tie. His program produced 25 All-Americans in 2012 alone, as well as 17 ACC event champions. Individually, Brianna Rollins was NCAA runner-up in the high hurdles both seasons. She was the ACC Indoor Track Athlete of the Year, while Marlena Wesh won the honor outdoors. Dezerea Bryant swept ACC Freshman of the Year honors, while April Sinkler was named ACC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year. Three athletes he coached at Clemson, including two currently on the 2012-13 roster, competed in the London Olympics in August. Warren Fraser represented the Bahamas in the 100 dash, while Wesh competed in the 400 for Haiti. Patricia Mamona, who won a pair of NCAA Championships under Johnson in the triple jump, competed for Portugal. Johnson’s program produced three top-25 NCAA team finishes in 2011, highlighted by the women’s team’s No. 7 standing at the national outdoor meet. He coached three NCAA individual champions - Rollins in the 60 hurdles, Miller Moss in the heptathlon, and Mamona in the outdoor triple jump. He also coached NCAA runner-up April Sinkler in the indoor triple jump and Liane Weber in the heptathlon. Clemson won the 2010 indoor crown in surprising fashion to some. The Tigers were thought to be underdogs heading into the three-day meet, but Johnson’s team dominated the event by tallying 145.5 points. Clemson won both the indoor and outdoor meet by over 50-point margins. Under Johnson’s watch, the 2010 women’s team totaled 17 All-America performers. Ten were at the NCAA Indoor Championships, when the team tied for seventh place. It was Clemson’s highest finish since the 2001 team tied for third. The team followed with another top-20 finish in the spring, finishing 18th behind Mamona’s first national championship performance in the triple jump. In terms of individual accolades, several of Johnson’s athletes stood out in 2010. Mamona was named the ACC’s Outdoor Field Athlete-of-the-Year, while Sinkler was the league’s Meet MVP during both seasons. Weber was a first-team ESPN the Magazine

Academic All-American, while Mamona was named to the third team. In addition to Rollins’ indoor rookie honor, Kendrick went on to be named ACC Outdoor Freshman-of-the-Year. The 2010 season was a banner year for both individual and relay championships at the ACC level as well. Sinkler won the indoor and outdoor high jump and long jump, while Weber swept the pentathlon and heptathlon with ACC records. The Tigers capped both meets by winning a relay on the final day. Indoors, a team of four freshmen captured the 4x400 relay in dominant fashion. Outdoors, Clemson took home the 4x100 relay. Both relays went on to AllAmerica performances at the NCAA Championships. Johnson’s ability as a coach was first displayed for the Tigers at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships, where two-sport athlete Jacoby Ford won his first-ever national crown in the 60 dash. Clemson produced seven All-Americans in his first year alone, but that only taps the surface of what Johnson was able to accomplish in his initial campaign as a Division I head coach. Ford earned three of the All-America honors by himself in 2009 and excelled in his only season within Johnson’s system. Ford established an ACC record time of 6.51 in winning the league’s 60 dash title. He also went on to win the 100 dash outdoors. The 4x100 relay, consisting of Ford, C.J. Spiller, Justin Murdock and Trenton Guy, experienced a level never before seen at Clemson. Johnson and Assistant Coach Tim Hall carefully put the pieces of the puzzle together, and returned with a third-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Perhaps the most visible aspect of Johnson’s impact in his first year was the turnaround experienced by the women’s team. Clemson finished third at the 2009 ACC Indoor Championships, a fivespot improvement from the previous year that was only a foreshadowing of things to come. Johnson personally coached three champions at the meet, Sinkler in the high jump and long jump, and Weber in the pentathlon. Sinkler was named the ACC Field MVP after the meet. Weber went on to earn her first-ever All-America certificate after placing sixth in the pentathlon at the NCAA Championships. Johnson, 37, was one of the top assistant coaches in collegiate track & field when approached by Clemson’s administration about the possibility of becoming the school’s next head coach. He coached the sprints, hurdles, jumps, and multi-events for the men and women at Virginia Tech. He was coming

off a 2008 season in which he was named Southeast Region Assistant Coach-of-the-Year by the USTFCCCA. Johnson’s groups were a big reason the Hokies claimed four straight ACC championships on the women’s side since 2006-07. In 2007, he was named National Assistant Coach-of-the-Year for women’s sprints and hurdles. In total, Johnson coached 10 NCAA All-Americans and 17 ACC champions in his four years with the Virginia Tech program. He also coached eight NCAA East Region individual champions. International success has been a hallmark of Johnson’s program in his time at Clemson. Kendrick won an individual gold medal in the 200 dash at the IAAF World Junior Championships, while also adding a gold as a member of the 4x100 relay for Team USA in 2010. Kendrick’s individual championship was the first in Clemson women’s track & field history at the world juniors. Dezerea Bryant added a gold for the Tiger program in the 4x100-meter relay in 2012. Bryant was also the USA Junior Champion in the 100-meter dash and bronze medalist at World Juniors in the 200. In 2012, Alyssa Kulik (steeplechase) and Brianna Rollins (100 hurdles) collected gold medals at the North American, Central American and Car Under-23 Championships in Guanajuato, Mexico. Prior to his four-year appointment at Virginia Tech, Johnson spent two years as an assistant at Southern Illinois. Prior to that stop, he assisted with the instruction of sprints, hurdles, and jumps at the University of Arkansas from 1999-2002. The Razorbacks won back-to-back SEC “triple crown” championships during that time. Johnson earned an undergraduate degree in kinesiology from Arkansas in 2000. He earned one varsity letter with the Razorbacks’ nationallyrenowned program. As a sprinter, he helped Arkansas to four SEC indoor and outdoor championships and the 1998 NCAA Outdoor national championship. In 1995, Johnson was a member of the “triple crown” national championship track & field team at Blinn College in Texas. He also was a 1996 South Coast Conference champion in the 400 at Long Beach City College before moving on to Arkansas. Johnson is married to the former Lilly Montgomery. The couple has four children, Desirae (18), Lawrence (12), Laniah (8), and Lukas (7).
ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH BRAD HERBSTER Under Herbster’s tutelage, Ruck and Kulik have experienced outstanding individual results in cross country as well. Ruck was all-region three straight years (2009-11) and All-ACC in 2009. Kulik was allregion in 2010 and 2011, leading the team to a fourth-place finish in the latter year. Ruck became the first Clemson female in 17 years to earn trips to all three NCAA national meets in the same calendar year when she competed at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in the fall of 2010. She earned the trip by finishing sixth at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Louisville, KY. Kulik was also all-region, finishing 25th. It was the first time in 17 years the Tiger women’s team had two all-region performers in the same cross country season. Herbster continues to make strides with the men’s distance program as well. Chris Slate was All-ACC in the 800 both indoor and outdoor in 2011 and 2012. Slate also advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time as a senior in 2012, Clemson’s first in the 800 meters since 1999. He coached Ty McCormack to a strong cross country season in 2011. He was All-ACC with an eighth-place effort on Clemson’s home course and followed with an all-region showing in November. Herbster, like current Clemson assistant Tim Hall, joined the Tiger coaching staff after a stint with Charlotte. Herbster coached the distance athletes for the 49er program from 2002-09. During his time with the program, he was an integral part of four straight women’s Atlantic-10 championships as well as three of the last four men’s A-10 team champions. His student-athletes earned great individual acclaim during Herbster’s tenure with the 49ers. He coached 35 conference champions (including relays) between indoor and outdoor track & field in his seven years with the program. In cross country, he mentored 28 all-conference performers, including the 2008 men’s and women’s individual champions. The 2008 cross country season was a banner one for Herbster’s athletes. The women’s team was

On the men’s side, Herbster coached Adu Dentamo to the first-ever A-10 individual championship in Charlotte history. In 2002, Herbster’s first year, the men’s cross country team won its only Conference USA championship. Herbster was named Conference USA Coach-of-the-Year in his initial campaign with the 49ers. On the track, 27 of Herbster’s conference champions came from the women’s track & field team at Charlotte. He coached Aja Jackson to nine individual championships from 2007-09 and Cassie Ficken to seven in 2005 and 2006. Under Herbster’s coaching, Ficken became the first indoor All-American in Charlotte women’s track & field history in 2005. Jackson was named A-10 Performer-of-the-Year in 2009. Herbster coached the 49ers to 10 conference championships in 2009 alone, including four relays. Charlotte swept the men’s and women’s distance medley relay at the A-10 Indoor Championships, while the women’s 4x800m relay won both indoor and outdoor crowns. Four of his individual champions in 2009 were first-time winners at the A-10 Track & Field Championships. Prior to joining the Charlotte program, Herbster spent four years as a high school coach in North Carolina. He coached cross country and distance events for North Mecklenburg High School for three years. He was named Coach-of-the-Year by the Charlotte Observer in 2000-01. He produced six AllAmericans and five state champions. He then spent one year at Hopewell High School in Huntersville, NC. Herbster earned his undergraduate degree from the University of South Carolina in 1991. He competed for the Gamecock cross country and track & field teams. Herbster was a three-time allconference performer and still ranks fifth in school history on the all-time 3000-meter steeplechase performance list. Brad Herbster is in his fourth season as a member of Clemson’s cross country and track & field staffs. Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Lawrence Johnson added Herbster to his staff in the summer of 2009, a move that has had a tremendous impact on the program in his first three seasons with the Tigers. Herbster was elevated to the title of associate head cross country coach in August of 2012. Clemson has captured ACC championships in women’s indoor and outdoor track & field in each of the last three seasons with Herbster on the staff. The women’s team has had six straight NCAA top-20 finishes as well, culminating with a pair of top-five efforts in 2012. Herbster coached junior Alyssa Kulik to an incredible career in the steeplechase. She was fourth at the NCAA Championships in 2011, earning the first All-America honor in women’s program history for the event. She followed as a senior in 2012 with her first individual ACC Championship and a seventhplace finish and second straight All-America honor at the NCAA Championships. Kulik competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2012 in the steeplechase, finishing 15th. In 2010, he coached Kim Ruck to All-America status with a seventh-place finish in the 5K at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Ruck was also the ACC’s indoor champion in the event, Clemson’s first indoor female distance champion in the conference in 17 years. Herbster coached her to a school-record time in the 5K. She also earned a bid to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 10K, finishing in 13th place. Ruck followed up with another quality season on the track in 2011. She won the ACC 10,000-meter race and was all-conference indoors in the 3K and 5K.

SUPPORT STAFF Shawn Cobey is in his fourth season as a member of the Tiger track & field staff. He was Clemson’s throws coach from 2009-12 before claiming the title of operations manager for the Tiger track & field and cross country program in August. In his new role, Cobey is in charge of the program’s travel arrangements, coordination of recruiting visits, equipment and meet management. He is also the program’s liaison with academics and compliance. Clemson captured ACC championships in women’s indoor and outdoor track & field in each of the last three seasons with Cobey on the staff. The women’s Shawn Cobey team has had six straight NCAA top-20 finishes as well, Operations Manager culminating with a pair of top-five efforts in 2012. Cobey’s athletes have been important contributors to the team success, both on the men’s and women’s sides over the last three years. Zach Berg overcame a long bout with injuries to flourish in 2010, his final season in a Clemson uniform. It is no coincidence his performance level elevated with Cobey’s coaching. Under the new leadership, Berg established Clemson records in both the weight throw (66’11.5”) and hammer throw (210’7”) and was the third-place finisher at the ACC level in both events. He also earned his firstever NCAA qualification by placing 12th at the East Prelims in Greensboro to close the outdoor season. Alex Padgett would go on to break Berg’s record in the weight throw as a senior in 2011, a year that turned out to be stellar for the Rock Hill, SC native. It was a senior season that culminated with his first and only ACC championship in the shot put at the outdoor league meet in Durham, NC. Padgett was also All-ACC in the indoor shot put under Cobey’s tutelage in 2011 as well. On the women’s side, Brittney Waller worked her way from all-conference in the weight throw as a freshman to ACC Champion and second-team All-American in the event as a sophomore in 2011. Waller followed with a second straight league title in 2012 as a junior. Waller, a former USA Junior qualifier in both the discus and hammer, ranks among Clemson’s all-time best in the weight, discus and hammer throws. Cobey was an assistant coach at his alma mater, Youngstown State, from 200309 before making the move to Clemson. Prior to 2003, Cobey was head coach of his alma mater, Canfield High School, for two years. Cobey was a six-time all-conference thrower at Youngstown State, including a two-time conference champion. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education in 2001. He earned a master’s degree in education leadership and administration in 2004. Cobey, 34, married the former Ashleigh Evatt on July 21, 2012.
Anne Powell is in her second season as a graduate assistant with the Clemson track & field program. She assists Director of Track & Field Lawrence Johnson with the administration of various operational areas of the program. She assists with the planning of track camps, clinics, recruiting weekends, and fan appreciation events. Powell helps maintain a recruiting database, assists with communication to potential recruits, and at the direction of the coaching staff, coordinates recruiting visits. She is also involved in managing the operations of hosting a track meet. Anne Powell In her first season at Clemson, the Tiger women’s Graduate Assistant program won both indoor and outdoor ACC Championships in 2012. Clemson’s women also produced top-five team finishes in both seasons at the NCAA Championships, culminating with a tie for fourth at the outdoor national meet. Powell joined the Tiger track & field program after a decorated pole vault career for the UNC Wilmington women’s track & field team. During her time with the Seahawks, she established both indoor and outdoor records for the women’s vault. Her lifetime best clearance was 12’8.25” (3.87m), set at the Penn State Challenge in February of 2011. She was a three-time All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) performer, which included a pair of silver medals in 2008 and 2009. She was third-team All-CAA in 2011, after sitting out the 2010 season due to injury. Powell also qualified for the ECAC Championships her first two seasons. In 2011, she competed at the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Bloomington, IN and was named the Seahawks’ team MVP for field events. She won the pole vault competition at four meets in 2011, including the Coastal Carolina Classic and Charlotte Invitational. Powell is a native of Ashland, VA and graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 2007. She earned her undergraduate degree from UNC Wilmington in exercise science and is pursuing a master’s degree in human resource development from Clemson.

Women Earn School’s Best Regional Finish Since ‘93 Clemson fell just short in its bid to become the first cross country program at the school since the 1993 women’s team to advance to the NCAA Championships. The Tiger women were fourth as a team, the program’s best finish since that 1993 team placed third. Virginia won the women’s team race with 117 points, followed by NC State with 123. North Carolina had 133 points to Clemson’s 147. The Tigers entered the meet with a No. 4 regional ranking, so they held their position against a competitive field on Saturday, Nov. 12 in Louisville, KY. Three runners received all-region honors, including a pair of seniors from the women’s team. Ruck in Rare Company with Third All-Region Honor Clemson graduate Kim Ruck put herself in rarified air on Saturday, Nov. 12 when she earned her third consecutive all-region accolade. She and Clemson Ring of Honor member Tina Krebs are the only female runners from Clemson to earn all-district or all-region status three times over the course of a career. Ruck was 11th in 2009 and sixth in 2010 in her previous allregion seasons. Krebs won all-district awards from 1982-84 for the Tigers. The Greer, SC native had a bit of an up-anddown senior campaign in 2011, but she ended on a high note with a 25th-place effort at the Southeast Regionals in Louisville, KY. She also had a season-best time of 21:03.2 over the 6,000-meter course. Kulik Earns Second Straight All-Region Accolade Clemson senior Alyssa Kulik was consistently the top performer on the highly-competitive women’s team. The Simpsonville, SC product led the Tigers in the final five meets of the 2011 season, including the two biggest meets on the schedule in the ACC Championships and Southeast Regionals. She earned her second straight all-region accolade by finishing eighth individually against a quality field. Kulik ran to a career-best cross country time in her final meet in a Clemson uniform, clocking a 20:34.3 over Louisville’s 6K course. Anthony Soars as a Sophomore Clemson sophomore Natalie Anthony was far and

away the most improved runner on the women’s cross country team in 2011. She led Clemson in scoring at the Eye Opener to start the fall season, and scored in every subsequent meet for the Tigers as well. Anthony was seventh place at the Clemson Invitational on Sept. 16 with a time of 21:15.06 over Musser Farms’ 6K course. Almost two months later, the Randolph, NJ native shaved 10 seconds off that with a personal best 21:05.9 at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer Park in Louisville, KY. She was 27th place, just two spots shy of her first all-region honor. Anthony was also the team’s No. 3 runner at the ACC Championships in 32nd position. Nationally-Ranked Tigers The Clemson women broke into the national rankings for the first time in nearly 20 years when the coaches poll was released on Oct. 4. Clemson was ranked 30th for two weeks by the USTFCCCA, before falling out after the Wisconsin Invitational. Clemson’s women have also ranked among the top five in the Southeast Region each of the last eight weeks in 2011. The Tigers began the season No. 6, before falling to No. 7 on Sept. 12. Clemson ranked as high as third regionally, both in the Oct. 3 and Oct. 10 polls. 2011 ACC Championships Recap The Clemson women finished sixth as a team at the ACC Championships on Saturday, Oct. 29. It was the program’s highest finish at a conference meet since the 1999 team also placed sixth. At that time, however, the conference consisted of just nine teams. The women’s team used a balanced effort to score its best finish in 12 years. Clemson did not have anyone finish higher than 24th individually, but each of the team’s top five scorers were also inside the top 40. Alyssa Kulik led with a time of 21:07.4 and the 24th-place showing, followed by Kate Borowicz (31st), Natalie Anthony (32nd), Kim Ruck (33rd) and Elyse Borisko (40th). The men’s team struggled to a 10th-place finish, but sophomore Ty McCormack was certainly a standout as he reached the podium as an allconference performer. The meet was the first ACC Championships held
McCormack Nabs All-ACC, All-Region Honors Clemson sophomore Ty McCormack became the first men’s cross country runner to earn allconference honors since Matt Clark in 2007 when he placed eighth at the ACC meet on Oct. 29. McCormack did so in fine fashion, running to a lifetime best of 23:28.2 over Clemson’s 8K course. He was even better at the Southeast Regionals in Louisville on Nov. 12, 2011. The native of Gainesville, GA put together a time of 30:38 across a 10,000-meter distance. He finished in 18th place, good enough for his first all-region honor. He was Clemson’s first allregion runner from the men’s team since Matt Clark claimed the honor in 2007. Borowicz Made an Impact After Transfer After transferring from ACC rival Georgia Tech, Upstate South Carolina native Kate Borowicz made a name for herself in the fall for the Tiger cross country team. Her best showing of the season was a time of 21:09.9 against an elite national field at the Wisconsin Invitational, and she followed up with a solid 31st-place outing at the ACC Championships at Clemson. She had a time of 21:14.9 over the Tigers’ tough Musser Farms home course and was the team’s No. 2 runner behind Alyssa Kulik. Borowicz, who attended J.L. Mann High School in nearby Greenville, has a twin sister who competes for the University of South Carolina. She scored in five consecutive meets to end the 2011 season, including both the ACC Championships and Southeast Regionals.
