2013-14 Outlook
2013-14 Women’s Diving Guide
Overview Staff Divers review records
The 2013-14 season will mark the second year for the Clemson Women’s Diving program. In their inaugural season, five Tigers qualified for the NCAA Zone B Championships. This season, Clemson returns 10 of 12 divers from last year and looks to take the next step in building the program. “We definitely have more of a purpose this year,” said Head Coach Leslie Hasselbach Adams. “Last season, half of the team was brand new and we got a chance to kind of get our feet wet. We got a chance to see how the season would play out. “It is exciting to come back this year and have a lot more experience. We have only one freshman and we have three seniors. We have really worked on our team culture and what our purpose is and what our team goals are. The girls are focused and dialed in on what they are trying to do.” This season will mark the 14th season that Hasselbach Adams has coached diving at Clemson. She became the first women’s diving coach in Clemson history after being chosen to lead the program in its inaugural season. She will be once again assisted by Ryan Moehnke, who will begin his 13th season overall as a diving coach. In the pool, seniors Heather Britt, Emily Howard, and Bailey Warren will lead the squad in 2013-14. Howard, who competed in all three events at NCAA Zones in 2012-13, returns as one of the top Tigers from a year ago. She led Clemson with 61.5 competition points last season and recorded the highest score of the season with a 306.83 against NC State. “Emily Howard is our team captain,” Adams said. “She has done a tremendous job. She stayed in Clemson the whole summer and trained and competed and has done a wonderful job as a leader.” Juniors Jessica Doolittle, Chelsea Uranaka and Emily Yoder will provide depth and experience for the Tigers. Uranaka finished fourth on the team in points last season and competed in the one-meter event at NCAA Zones last season. Yoder was one of the top platform divers on the team last season. Sophomores Tabitha Banks, Megan Helwagen, Juliana Melchionda and Jessica Resler each look to make an impact this season. Last season, Helwagen had a standout season as a freshman finishing second on the team in points with 52. She also recorded the highest one-meter score of the season (286.50) and had the highest scores of any Tiger in the one-meter and platform events at the NCAA Zones.

Resler had a successful season as she led the Tigers in points in the platform event and finish fifth in points overall. She finished with the highest Clemson score in the platform event at the ACC Championships and had three of the top five platform scores on the team last season. Melchionda also made great strides during her freshman campaign and qualified for NCAA Zones in the one-meter and three-meter events. “Our remaining ladies that will return that competed at NCAA Zones last season have also been working hard at the pool,” Adams said. “Chelsea Uranaka is going to have a knock season. Juliana Melchionda is training hard and doing her thing. Megan Helwagen didn’t get to train the whole summer due to an injury but she is coming back with a vengeance. They are all doing good things at the pool and we are excited about that.” The 2013-14 version of the women’s diving team will feature just one freshman. Sarah Braun, a native of Beaverton, Oregon, will be the Tigers’ lone newcomer to start the season. Braun was the captain of her high school diving team at Southridge High School and was twice named most outstanding female diver. She is currently the only Clemson student-athlete from the state of Oregon. Clemson will compete in a challenging and competitive schedule in 2013-14. The slate features 11 regular-season meets, including five home meets and three invitational meets. The Tigers will open the season October 26 against Richmond and Georgia Southern. It will be the first return trip for former Tiger David Giambra, who was a diver at Clemson from 2006-09 under Adams. “I am very excited to have David come back home,” Adams said. “I am super proud of him for getting in to the coaching profession. He has done a tremendous job at Georgia Southern and I know he is excited to bring his team here to compete.” The Tigers will wrap up the regular season on February 8 when they host James Madison at home. Clemson will then travel to Greensboro, NC for the ACC Championships on February 19-22. The divers will look to qualify for the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships in Greensboro, NC on March 10-12. From there, the Tigers will try to earn a spot in the NCAA Women’s Diving Championships in Minneapolis, MN on March 20-22.

Mention Academic All-American squad.
Leslie Hasselbach Adams
During her fifth season as Clemson’s Diving coach, Hasselbach Adams coached her divers to six top 16 finishes, and one top eight finish. Hasselbach Adams also coached Eric Shulick to his second straight Honorable mention Academic All-American honors.
Head Coach
2nd Season as Women’s Diving 14th Season Overall at Clemson 16th Season as a Head Diving Coach Toledo ‘99 Leslie Hasselbach Adams will lead the women’s diving program again in 2013-14 in its second season as a program. Overall, the upcoming season will be her fourteen coaching the diving program at Clemson. She will head an experienced squad with 11 returners and just one newcomer. Last season, she boasted a squad of twelve ladies, which consisted of six returners and six new members that comprised the university’s first women’s diving team in history. Freshman Megan Helwagen and junior Emily Howard both finished inside the top 20 in the platform at NCAA Zones. The team’s lone senior, Elizabeth Tatum, placed tenth in the three-meter at the ACC Championships. The Tigers also excelled in the classroom, leading the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 3.34 team grade-point average. In 2011-12, five different women’s diving competitors qualified for NCAA Zones under Hasselbach Adams’ watch. The list included senior Brooke George, who qualified in three events (one-meter, three-meter, platform) and set a new school record in the three-meter. Freshman Chelsea Uranaka joined the top five list in school history in the three-meter, while a number of additional divers increased their respective standings on the Clemson lists. Pat Chamberlain saw his name rise to third on the school’s all-time list in the three-meter. The 2010-11 campaign was highlighted by junior Brooke George, who finished in the top ten in the ACC in both the one-meter and the three-meter events. George’s score in the three-meter set a new school record as well. Active Tiger divers swarmed the school’s all-time best lists, as the top four spots in the three-meter were held by current student-athletes at season’s end (George, Cassie Self, Emily Howard, Elizabeth Tatum). In all, seven of Clemson’s top ten positions in both the one- and the three-meter women’s dive were filled with current divers. In the 2009-10 season, David Giambra capped a brilliant career by setting the school record in the one-meter, giving him a pair of school records that still stand. The young divers in the Clemson program also benefited from Hasselbach Adams’ tutelage, particularly freshman Elizabeth Tatum. She set a new school record in the three-meter and posted the third-best score on the team in the one-meter to begin her career as a Tiger.
2013-14 Women’s Diving Guide
During the 2008-09 season, junior David Giambra continued his success as he set school records in the platform and the one-meter and three-meter. He also had an eighth place finish in the one-meter at the ACC’s. Freshmen Cassie Self and Brooke George got their Clemson careers off to a great start as they both are in Clemson’s top 6 in the one and three meter events.
In 2003-04 Shulick won the ACC Championship on the one-meter board for the Tigers. It was the first ACC title for a diver under Hasselbach Adams, and the first for any Clemson diver since the 1996 season. Shulick and Jessica Watcke represented the Tigers at the 2004 NCAA Zone Diving Regional Championships. Both divers set school records in the one-meter board during the 2003-04 season. During the 2002-03 season, Hasselbach Adams coached Shulick to the Tigers’ first appearance in the NCAA Diving Championships since the 1988 season. He was named a 2003 CSCAA Academic All-American and was a member of the All-ACC team after finishing second in the one-meter at the 2003 ACC Championships. Hasselbach Adams served as the head diving coach at the University of Toledo from 1998-2000. Hasselbach Adams was actually the head diving coach while finishing her undergraduate degree. She oversaw the rebuilding of the Rockets diving program, and more than tripled the squad size in her last two years. In her two-year stint at Toledo, Hasselbach Adams coached four Mid-American Conference diving finalists and two MAC All-Academic team members. She also had three divers qualify for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships. Hasselbach Adams earned a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education with an emphasis in Social Sciences from the University of Toledo in 1999. She graduated from Clemson in May 2008 with a master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling with an emphasis in Student Affairs Administration. In addition, Hasselbach Adams recently graduated from the NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy in Denver, CO. In addition to her academic work, Hasselbach Adams is U.S. Diving Safety Certified and is a member of the U.S. Diving Association. She is also CPR, AED, and First Aid certified. She also serves on the NCAA Diving subcommittee representing Zone B. Recently, Hasselbach Adams has been named to serve on the NCAA Swimming and Diving rules committee as a diving representative. She is also a representative for the Clemson University Athletics Department on the Staff Senate Committee. In addition, Hasselbach Adams is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA). Most recently, Hasselbach Adams was a judge on the FOX show “Stars in Danger: The High-Dive.” The show involved famous figures attempting different dives. Hasselbach Adams is married to John Adams and they reside in Seneca, SC.
In the 2007-08 season, senior Academic All-ACC member Dani Kazilionis took bronze on the one-meter boards at ACCs. Several Tigers notched top-16 finishes in the various events. Juniors David Giambra and Stephanie Fura each set school records on the three-meter boards. Giambra and Kazilionis also became the first two divers in Tiger history to score in all three diving events at ACCs. During the 2005-06 season, senior Shastin Leathers stepped up and broke her own school record on the one-meter board. Leathers qualified for the NCAA Zone “B” meet in the spring with the record-breaking score. Hasselbach Adams saw the rest of her team improve, as seven other Tiger divers had career best scores. In addition, Jessica Watcke was named to the 2006 NCAA Honorable

diving program philosophy Overview staff Staff Divers review records
We are the only collegiate women’s diving program in the country, making our program unique. The year of 2012-13 was our inaugural season and a solid foundation has been laid. I am proud to be leading this emerging program at Clemson University. We are paving the way for the sport of diving and for the Clemson University Athletic Department. The future of the diving program continues to shine brightly. Each day is a new opportunity to continue to work towards building a national powerhouse diving program. We have all the tools here to make it happen; it’s all just a matter of time. We will take advantage of each new day by maximizing our time effectively to increase our program’s success through “Leading a lifestyle of excellence.” “Leading a lifestyle of excellence” encompasses the overall philosophy of the Clemson Women’s Diving program. I believe in developing the total student-athlete. Everything we do in our program has a purpose, and that purpose is to create better all-around athletes through empowering them to be their best every day. Student-athletes and the coaching staff are encouraged to embrace change to continue the perpetual motion of excellence.
2013-14 Women’s Diving Guide
Our athletes are committed to working hard and are supportted to train with purpose resulting in them reaching their full potential. Our athletes are held accountable to be disciplined and committed to being the best they can be at each practice and competition. I encourage our athletes and staff to be “students of the sport” as I believe this continues to instill a continued passion and desire to be their best. 2013-14 Overall Season Focus As a staff and a program, we will stay true to our overall focus of the 2013-14 season. Our season focus will be about the journey, not the outcome. Every day is a brand new opportunity to allow us to be the best that we can be. If we are the best that we can be consistently, the outcome will take care of itself. We have one opportunity to create our legacy through the 2013-14 season and by focusing on the journey and the process, you will be in control of being your best. Stay in the present, live each day to the fullest and be the best “you” you can be every day.

Acadmics are essential component of our program. Our athletes are diligent and committed to their classroom efforts and are high-achieving students. Our ultimate goal is to successfully see each student-athlete walk across the stage to receive their degree. Obtaining a four-year degree is a standard of excellence in our program.
“It’s all about the journey, not the outcome.”
- Carl Lewis
I believe that leading a healthy lifestyle balance is a major key to developing the long-term success of our student-athletes. Our athletes are taught how to control and maintain a healthy lifestyle balance in conjunction with their athletic pursuits. Through staying committed to being fit in mind, body, and spirit, our athletes will continue to contribute greatly to our commitment of excellence. I believe in teaching and empowering our ladies to become great leaders. This is accomplished by taking advantage of the many opportunities for leadership training and advancement within our program and also within the athletic department and university throughout their diving career. I also believe in giving back to our community and paying it forward. Our athletes are encouraged to “pay it foward” through their involvement in numerous community outreach efforts. Our ladies possess many unique and positive gifts that are imperative they share. Our program is committed to our “Town and Gown” relationship not only with the city of Clemson but to countless others located in and out of our state. A lifestyle of excellence is the standard in our program, and as a staff, will work closely with our athletes to stay accountable to this standard. As a team, we will stay committed to leading a lifestyle of excellence through due diligence of integrity, respect, hard work, positive attitude, and belief in self. Our athletes will create an incredible and successful journey to reach the elite levels of our sport through this philosophy.

diving 101 Overview Staff Divers review records
Types of Dives There are six types of dives, also known as groups. The first four groups include variations of rotation, the fifth group includes any dive with a twist, and the sixth group begins with an armstand.
Glossary of Terms Approach Three or more steps forward to the end of the board before the hurdle and takeoff.
Forward Group The diver faces the front of the board and rotates toward the water. Dives in this group vary from simple front dives to difficult forward, four and one half somersaults.
Balk An illegal movement by the diver: • False start in which a diver makes an obvious attempt to start the approach but does not complete the diver. • Takeoff for the hurdle from both feet. • Loss of balance on an armstand dive causing feet to touch the platform.
Backward Group All dives in the backward group begin with the diver on the end of the board, with his or her back to the water, so as to rotate away from the board. Reverse Group Formerly called “gainers,” these dives begin with the diver facing the front of the board in order to rotate toward the board. Inward Group Formerly called “cutaways,” the diver stands on the end of the board with his or her back to the water and rotates toward the board. Twisting Group Any dive that uses a twist (excluding armstands) is included in this group. There are four types of twists: forward, backward, reverse, and inward. Armstand Group The diver assumes a handstand position on the edge of the platform before the dive. (Armstand positions are never used on the springboard.)
Entry The conclusion of a dive as a diver makes contact with the water. May be either head or feet-first. Upon entry, the body should always be near vertical in a straight position with toes pointed. In a headfirst entry, arms should be stretched above the head, in line with the body with the hands close together. Flying Used to describe a dive in which the diver assumes a straight position from takeoff, or after one somersault in a 115C, before executing the remainder of the dive. The straight position must be held for at least one quarter of a somersault (90 degrees).
Divers use one or more of the following four body positions during each dive:
Hurdle The final segment of a diver’s approach to takeoff. Consists of a spring to the end of the board, taking off from one foot, and landing on two feet at the end of the board.
Pike The legs are straight with the body bent at the waist. Like the straight position, arm placement is dictated by the particular dive or by the choice of the diver.
Judge Diving official who scores each dive on a scale of 0 (lowest) to 10 (highest). Seven judges officiate major national and international competition in individual events. Eleven judges officiate during synchro events.
Straight No bend at the waist or knees. Depending on the dive, there may be an arch in the back. Arm placement is the diver’s choice or is defined by the dive performed.
Platform A stationary, non-bending diving platform is at least 20 feet long and six and a half feet wide. (For synchronized diving, the platform should be a minimum of eight feet wide. 10 feet is preferred.) The platform height used in senior competition is 10 meters (approximately 33 feet). The platform structure typically also includes levels at three, five and seven and a half meters that are used during training and in junior competition.
Tuck Body is bent at the waist and knees, with thighs drawn to the chest and heels kept close to the buttocks. Feet and knees should be kept together and toes should be pointed. Free Indicates the diver’s option to use any of the above three positions, or combinations thereof, when performing a twisting dive. Synchro In the past, synchro was common only in aquacades and diving shows. But today, synchronized diving (or synchro diving) has become one of the most popular diving events in the world. Introduced internationally at the 1995 FINA World Cup, synchro diving eventually became a full-medal Olympic sport with its debut at the 2000 Games with four events.
2013-14 Women’s Diving Guide
Degree of Difficulty Rating ranging from 1.2 to 4.1 indicating the difficulty of executing a specific dive. The “DD” is multiplied by the sum of the judges’ scores (after the high and low scores are dropped) to calculate the overall score for a dive.
Synchro includes two divers of the same gender performing the same dive from the same level board. For a platform dive, divers take off from opposite sides. For a springboard dive, divers take off from their own, adjacent boards. There are four synchro diving events: men’s synchro 3-meter, men’s synchro platform, women’s synchro 3-meter, and women’s synchro platform.
Referee Manages the competition and ensures that all regulations are observed. Not a judge. Somersault A movement in which a diver rotates the body on an imaginary horizontal axis through the hips. This move can be performed in a variety of combinations. Springboard An adjustable diving board that regulates “springiness,” either 1-meter (3’3”) or 3-meters (9’9”) above the water. The springboard projects at least five feet beyond the edge of the pool. Takeoff A diver’s lift from the board prior to execution of the dive. May be done from a forward (running or standing) or backward approach, or from an armstand position. Tower The entire diving platform structure. Twisting Dive Any dive with a twist. There are four types of twisting dives: forward, back, reverse and inward. Unattached A term used to describe a diver who competes in a USA Diving-sponsored event, but does not represent a U.S. Diving club.
