Feerst ran four meets as a freshman and showed promise during outdoor track season in the steeplechase. A large freshman class will also have a chance to contribute right away for Clemson. Two runners to keep an eye on are Upstate native Evie Tate (Spartanburg) and Walton, GA product Alexa Womack. Elliott won’t make any excuses this fall as he ushers in a new era of Clemson cross country. His expectations are high, regardless of the roster that takes to the course for the first time on Sept. 14 for the Furman Invitational. “It’s not as funded as the track team, obviously, in terms of scholarships,” he said. “But we’ll put the best people out there, and hopefully some of them can contribute in track as well.” He speaks from experience. A distance specialist who won a pair of SEC Championships, Elliott simply wants athletes with range that can make an impact in multiple ways. “I went to LSU when it was primarily sprinters, but I was a distance runner,” he said. “I also contributed on the track, and that’s what I’m looking for. We need kids to help us in both.”

HEAD COACH MARK ELLIOTT “I think Clemson has made a good hire. Mark Elliott has not only been a great athlete, but he has been involved with a program at LSU for many years and has learned the various aspects it takes to be a successful head coach. As a coach who recruited Mark to run for me at LSU, and then to be an assistant coach with me for 17 years, it’s a very special feeling to now see him as a head coach at a major program.” Texas A&M Head Coach Pat Henry Mark Elliott was named head coach for men’s and women’s track & field and cross country at Clemson, Director of Athletics Dan Radakovich announced July 9. Elliott spent the last 20 seasons with LSU track & field, the last eight of which were as assistant head coach. He directly worked with LSU’s middle distance and distance runners, and was instrumental in the recruiting efforts for the combined program. “We’re excited to add Mark as our head coach,” Radakovich said. “He has a terrific résumé as both a longtime coach and studentathlete at LSU, where he was an integral part of 22 NCAA Championships. We look forward to continuing the ascent of our track & field program under his leadership into amongst the best in the country. I’d like to thank Barbara Kennedy-Dixon, Janie Hodge and Kyle Young for their assistance in the search process.” Elliott helped the men’s program to NCAA Championship indoor crowns in 2001 and 2004, and to an outdoor title in 2002. The Tiger women won indoor national titles from 199497 and 2002-04, and outdoor championships from 1994-97, 2003, 2008 and 2012. “Being a former athlete and now a coach for 20 years, I have always wanted to be a head coach,” said Elliott, who will coach Clemson’s middle distance and distance groups. “Working at LSU for 20 years shows that I am committed to what I am working toward. It was the right time for me to pursue this type of opportunity. “Clemson is the type of place you can continue to build a championship program. We competed against Clemson for years when I was at LSU, and it was always a formidable challenge. I look forward to putting together a great staff and competing for championships.” Elliott’s athletes played an integral part in LSU’s success. With Elliott on staff, the Lady Tiger women won a total of 12 Southeastern Conference Indoor and Outdoor Championships, six of both. He has coached five individual NCAA Champions, all in the 800 meters. He coached Marian Burnett to gold at the 2002 indoor national meet and Neisha Bernard-Thomas at the 2004 outdoor championship. LaTavia Thomas followed with an individual crown at the 2008 NCAA Indoor Championships. Thomas was a 12-time All-American under Elliott’s guidance and swept the SEC Indoor and Outdoor crowns in the half-mile in 2007 and 2008. This past season, he coached Natoya Goule

to National Championship performances in the 800 meters at both NCAA meets. She and Charlene Lipsey combined to score 31 points and help the Lady Tigers to a pair of top-five team finishes. Goule won the 800 meters at the Jamaican Championships this summer after becoming the first Lady Tiger to break two minutes in the event, and competed at the IAAF World Championships in August. Goule and Lipsey combined to split 800-meter championships at the 2013 SEC Indoor and Outdoor Championships, bringing Elliott’s total to 22 conference champions across 12 different student-athletes. In all, Elliott coached six SEC Indoor Champions and six SEC Outdoor Champions in the women’s 800 meters. He also coached conference champions in the men’s 800, men’s mile and women’s 5000 meters during his time on the Bayou. Elliott brought success to the LSU men’s track & field program as well. In a four-year span from 2007-10, his athletes swept the SEC Indoor and Outdoor titles in the 800 meters three times. Jamaal James did it in 2007, followed by Elkana Kosgei in 2008 and Richard Jones in 2010. Kosgei was the 2008 NCAA Indoor silver medalist, while Jones broke the school record for the half-mile in 2010. Elliott’s athletes have thrived on the international scene. He has coached five Olympians, including two-time 800 semifinalist Bernard-Thomas (2008, 2012) and two-time

2013 CLEMSON CROSS COUNTRY

2012 SEASON IN REVIEW

Clemson Produced Three All-Region Runners The NCAA Southeast Regionals were again fruitful to the Clemson cross country program. The Tigers produced three all-region selections – Erin Barker and Kate Borowicz from the women’s team, as well as Aaron Ramirez from the men’s program. It was the fifth straight season that the Clemson women’s program produced at least one all-region selection. That is the longest such streak for the program since the 1983-87 era under Clemson Hall of Fame coach Wayne Coffman. Ramirez’s all-region performance gave the men’s program back-toback selections, as Ty McCormack nabbed the honor in 2011.

ERIN BARKER Ramirez Capped Brilliant 2012 Season at Regionals Aaron Ramirez, a red-shirt sophomore from the Upstate of South Carolina, turned in arguably one of the most improved seasons in Clemson cross country history. Just one year after a 70th-place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regionals, he was 21st in the Nov. 9 meet in Charlotte, NC to claim his first all-region accolade. Ramirez produced an outstanding 10K time of 30:40.81, nearly 78 seconds better than his time from Louisville’s Sawyer Park at the same meet one year before. Ramirez also was Clemson’s top performer at the ACC Championships, running to a 28th-place finish over the 8,000-meter distance. Ramirez claimed a pair of top-five individual finishes in 2012. First, he began his season with a victory in the Clemson Invitational held on the school’s athletic grounds. He then earned a fourth-place spot at the Charlotte Invitational on Sept. 28 while leading the Tiger men to a sixth-place effort out of 35 teams.

Borowicz Among Most Improved for Tiger Women’s Team Clemson looked for consistency out of Kate Borowicz in 2012 after the departure of longtime standouts Alyssa Kulik and Kim Ruck. The Tigers received just that in her red-shirt junior season. The Greenville, SC native who first attended Georgia Tech was arguably the most improved runner on the Clemson women’s roster in 2012. Her turnaround culminated with her first all-region performance, a 21stplace finish at the Southeast Regionals in Charlotte, NC on Nov. 9. Borowicz ran a personal best 21:09.87 on the 6,000-meter course in Charlotte to lead Clemson’s women to a seventhplace team finish – a third straight top-10 for the program. Borowicz also was 36th at the ACC Championships, the No. 3 runner on the Tiger team. Borowicz was in Clemson’s top three in every meet of the 2012 season, with a best of second place at the Clemson Invitational.

Barker Earns All-Region Nod With Second Different School It’s not an every year occurrence to have a student-athlete earn allregion honors with two different Division I institutions. But that is exactly what happened in 2012 when Erin Barker claimed all-region status in her lone season as a member of Clemson’s program. She finished 24th at the Southeast Regionals in Charlotte. This followed a 21stplace effort from 2011 at Louisville’s Sawyer Park when she was a senior at nearby Furman University. Barker graduated from Furman in May of 2012 before enrolling at Clemson for her final year of eligibility.

McCormack Red-Shirted 2012 Season Due to Study Abroad Program The Clemson men’s team took a major hit at the outset of the 2012 season when its best runner, Ty McCormack, enrolled in a study abroad program in China. The program was to satisfy a prerequisite in his major, language & international trade. The native of Gainesville, GA had been All-ACC and allregion in 2011 as a sophomore before red-shirting the 2012 season. He returned after the fall semester to compete for the track & field team in 2012-13. McCormack eventually graduated in May of 2013, after only three years. He enrolled in graduate school at Auburn University.
