season outlook

The Tigers are coming off of yet another successful year for the Clemson rowing team, as they finished the 2009-10 season with a 15th place finish at the NCAA Championships. It was the third straight season that the rowing team competed in the NCAA Championships and they are hoping to carry that success on into the 2010-11 season. “I’m really excited about our upcoming spring season,” said Head Coach Robbie Tenenbaum. “We’re racing many of the best teams in the country and preparing for them will take a great deal of hard work. Specifically, we will draw upon a number of building blocks to help us achieve our goal this spring.” This 2010-11 season will bring about a lot of change for the Clemson rowing program. They will be working under first year Head Coach Robbie Tenenbaum and will also have to deal with the loss of a large senior class that included two-time All-American and All-ACC selection Brittany Cummings and U23 World Championship participant and All-ACC selection Michelle Nance. However, Tenenbaum feels that the Tigers are up for the challenge and ready to prove themselves. “Our greatest asset is our people. Our freshmen are injecting a fresh burst of energy and speed into the program. We have a good balance of freshman athletes, both domestic and international, which have achieved success at the junior level, including the US national championships, the Junior World Championships, and the U23 World Championships.” A solid senior class will lead the Tigers. This group has been to the NCAA Championships each year that they have competed at Clemson, the first ever class to do so. All-ACC performer Grace Wolff will provide a wealth of experience to the team, as she has competed in the Varsity 8+ for much of the last two seasons. Liz Robb, the 2008 ACC Freshmen of the Year, has also been a consistent contributor for the Tigers and will continue be a strong presence. Last season’s captains Connie Gorman and Lydia Hassell are proven leaders and will add to the Tigers’ depth, along with returners Nicole Bowen, Sarah Daanen, Jessica Gaul, Corey Geer, Victoria Graham, Jenna Zylstra and 2011 co-captain Leah Kelly. “Leading the team is a group of returning athletes that have been responsible for great success at Clemson,” said Tenenbaum. “Over their years with the program, they have led Clemson Women’s rowing to three consecutive NCAA championships appearances as well as an ACC conference championship.” The Tigers return a talented group of juniors, including Second Team AllRegion selection and 2011 co-captain Becca Brown. She rowed in the Varsity

8+ for most of the season last year and that experience will be a huge asset for the Tigers this year along with fellow juniors Kristen Agee, Kate Biladeau, Brittany Burns, Rebekah Clogston, Kenzie DuBrul, Marissa Henry, Taylor Hoynacki, Katie Mosier, Bre Przestrzelski and Sarah Young. The sophomore class will also bring a lot of strong competition to the Tiger squad as 20 return. Coxswain Katie Bruggeling leads the way as she coxed the Varsity 8+ crew for most of her freshman season. She also was invited to the U23 National Selection Camp and won at Henley in the Lightweight Women’s Eight over the summer. Ameerah Aly also spent part of last season with the Varsity 8+ and second Varsity 8+ crews as a freshman. Other sophomores that are expected to compete for spots on the varsity squad are Heather Cummings, Meredith Davidson, Vanesa Ewais, Caroline Fregeau, Kelly Hall, Karli Hogsed, Amanda Hrubesh, Emily Lavender, Kristin Manna, Emily Massey, Jillian Mickle, Sarah Monn, Caroline Thomas, and Torrey Wall. “We’re excited about our freshman class this year. We have a number of great student athletes from all over the United States plus four new international student athletes from Italy, Hungary, Ireland and Peru. We feel that a number of our freshman are going to be able to compete for spots in our NCAA boats.” “We have athletes who have come into the program and become immediately successful, having been to NCAA championships every year they have been at Clemson,” Tenenbaum said. “We also have athletes who may have started with less success, but are now in a position to make the NCAA championships for the first time due to an outstanding work ethic and steady improvement. Both paths of success are invaluable in helping develop the freshman into the next Clemson champions. “ The Tigers will be lead by Robbie Tenenbaum, who is in his first year as head coach and second year as a staff member at Clemson. He has brought in Lincoln LaRoe and former Tiger rower Jessica Leidecker to complete his staff. Clemson has an exciting schedule lined up for the spring season that will feature competitions with some of the top teams in the country. They will also play host to the ACC Championships for the second straight year, as it returns to Lake Hartwell on April 23. This will be the ninth season that the ACC Championships have been held at Clemson. They will begin the spring season at home March 5 with a regatta against Eastern Michigan and Northeastern University, followed by another home regatta against Charleston. The weekend of March 19th Clemson with host the Clemson Sprints as Duke, Indiana, Boston University, Marist, Purdue and Alabama all come into town. The Tigers will then hit the road on April 3 as they travel to Columbus, Ohio for the ACC/Big Ten duel. The next weekend they will head to Charlottesville, VA where they will take on Southern California, University of Texas and UCLA. After playing host to the ACC Championships, Alabama will come to Lake Hartwell on April 30th and then the Tigers will travel to Oak Ridge, TN for the ACC/Big East Duel. “We are fortunate at Clemson to be able to host so many home races,” Tenenbaum said. “We have fantastic facilities that draw great programs and our conference championship every year. This season is no different. To be the best we feel that it is important to race the best. We have set up a very challenging schedule, including a number of programs that competed at the NCAA championships last year. Racing programs from every region will help prepare us for our conference championship and the NCAA championships.” The Tigers will look to use their talent and experience to build on their success from the past three seasons and earn their fourth straight NCAA appearance this season. “Our goal is to continue the success of the program by training to be the best,” Tenenbaum said. “We are going to give the athletes the tools they need to succeed in the classroom, the weight room, land training, and on the water. If we do that, we can be competitive with the best crews in the country.”

facilities The Clemson Rowing boathouse is located on the western edge of Clemson’s campus, overlooking beautiful Lake Hartwell. Only a quarter of a mile from the other athletic facilities, the boathouse seems worlds apart lying in a secluded wooded area on the shore of one of the Southeast’s largest lakes. With 56,000 acres of water and 962 miles of shoreline, Lake Hartwell offers plenty of rowable water. Built as an Army Corps of Engineers project in 1962, the lake includes many pristine rivers, creeks and inlets that provide sheltered water on even the windiest of days. Lake Hartwell facilitates an ideal venue for the Tigers’ fully bouyed, six-lane 2000 meter race course. The entire course is visible from the boathouse.

Clemson has grandstand seating located at the finish line of the race course.

The Tigers row state-of-the-art, custom built Pocock Racing Shells from Everett, Washington. Pocock is the leading boat builder pioneering racing shell specifically designed for the speed at which women row. The Tiger fleet includes four 8+, four 4-, four 4+, twelve 2-/2x and singles.

Construction was recently completed on a new training facility, which is one of the best facilities in the ACC and the South Region. The 11,500 square foot facility houses an expanded locker room, additional workout space, a team meeting room, an athlete lounge, a kitchen, and coaches’ offices.

“I fell in love with Clemson when I first stepped on campus. I loved the atmosphere. It really felt like a family, and even though I wasn’t part of that family yet, I felt welcomed. I could see myself becoming a part of the Tiger family. I wanted to find a college with lots of school spirit and you can’t beat the spirit at Clemson. I loved the combination of spirit and everything Clemson had to offer athletically. They’re always there to support you. I knew Clemson was a school I would want to be at even if I wasn’t rowing. Now that I’m here, there’s just something about going to a football game with all my friends or eating at the dining hall with my teammates that I can’t get away from. I know Clemson is the place for me.” - Freshman Emily Lavendar

The signs on the side of the highway as you enter Clemson say “Clemson: In Season Every Season.” From the point of view of most Clemson graduates, the seasons this slogan speaks of are football, basketball, baseball, etc. But a drive through town in the middle of spring, when the azaleas and dogwoods are in full bloom, or a walk through campus in October, when the trees are blazing in the brilliant colors of autumn, will leave little doubt that Clemson is indeed in season, every season. Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and caressed by the shores of beautiful Lake Hartwell, Clemson is located in the northwest corner of South Carolina, two hours northeast of Atlanta, GA and two hours southwest of Charlotte, NC. The friendly residents of Clemson and the surrounding towns welcome visitors each year with a true dose of southern hospitality. With its college-town, lakefront setting against a backdrop of mountains and forests, Clemson is characterized by a strong sense of community, a commitment to service and a love of winning – in academics, in athletics and in life.

vic k ery hall Student-Athlete Enrichment Respect • Integrity • Excellence

Since its inception in 1991, the Student-Athlete Enrichment Programs have provided student-athletes a continued commitment to excellence. Our approach is to address the total student-athlete, and we are committed to coaching our student-athletes to success in the academic, personal growth, career, and community service arenas. As an original member of the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, we provide opportunities and services to address the changing needs and skills of student-athletes during college and after graduation. This program was selected for the Division I-A Athletic Director’s Association “Program of Excellence” Award, a lifetime award recognizing CHAMP/ Life Skills excellence. The Student-Athlete Enrichment Programs are housed in Vickery Hall, located in the center of campus. The $3-million structure is as impressive aesthetically as other athletic facilities. It recently underwent $300,000 in renovations to further assist our studentathletes in the classroom. But the importance of Vickery Hall to our student-athletes is not found in the structure itself, but in the many programs that the building houses. Vickery Hall opened in the fall of 1991 and was the first facility in the country constructed solely to provide academic support to student-athletes. The two-story, 27,000 square-foot building is open all day and into the evening hours to accommodate the student-athletes’ extended schedules. Our programs are dedicated to provide a holistic, educational experience by inspiring an environment of respect, integrity, and excellence. Through these services, Vickery guides and encourages each individual to reach his or her full potential as a student, athlete, and citizen.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING Clemson University has one of the finest weight rooms in the country. In 2004, the weight room was drastically remodeled, receiving a more modern and updated look as well as a more functional layout. Some of the new and updated features of the weight room include a state-of-the-art sound system, eight flat-screen plasma televisions, state-of-the-art ventilation system, new lighting system, 10 new multi-functional Clemson power racks, Mondo rubber flooring throughout entire weight room, new orange upholstery on all equipment, new paint on surrounding walls and columns, carpeting in entrances and offices and a reconstruction of the entryway walls. The nearly 15,000 square foot facility boasts over 12 tons of weight equipment and lines of Nautilus and Hammer Strength machines. The vast amount of equipment allows the weight room to be used by a number of teams simultaneously. The plush atmosphere provides an interesting contrast to the physical exertion that takes place in the facility. The Tiger Strength and Conditioning program is on the cutting edge of athletic sports enhancement. The multiple training methodologies utilized by the Clemson strength staff ensures that each athlete gets the maximum benefit from resistance training, speed development, nutritional consultation, and sports specific conditioning. ATHLETIC TRAINING Clemson student-athletes in all sports now have the luxury of one of the top athletic training facilities in the nation. In the fall of 2000, the facility completed a $750,000 renovation and was renamed the Hoover Training Facility. The spacious facility features the latest in athletic training needs. There are offices for the employees and new taping tables, the latest in rehabilitation facilities, including stationary bikes, elliptical machines and an underwater treadmill, and a large hydro-therapy area. The Hoover Athletic  Training Facility is state-of-the-art in every aspect. It includes offices for staff and physicians, an orthopedic examination room, a conference room, and library. Best of all, the facility has plenty of space for all athletic training needs.

COMM

Clemson University athletics is dedicated to creating and maintaining a positive image for the university within the surrounding communities through a commitment to service. By enabling student-athletes to identify and share their time, talents, and abilities, Clemson’s student-athletes demonstrate a commitment to the community, and also grow as engaged citizens. Headed by Linda White, the Community Relations among studentathletes has reached new highs. In the 2009-10 academic year, Clemson’s student-athletes completed a total of 5,180 hours of service, or an average of almost 11.5 hours per athlete. That’s the equivalent of 3,453 soccer matches, 7,770 basketball games, and more than 5,000 volleyball matches! Clemson’s commitment to service reaches across several initiatives for players and coaches, including Shop With A Coach, Relay for Life, Be A T.I.G.E.R. Field Day, trips to various shelters and elementary schools, as well as hundreds of other initiatives from churches to the Special Olympics. Perhaps the most unique part of Clemson’s efforts is the Be a T.I.G.E.R. program. Clemson continues to be the only Division-I athletics program that uses a comprehensive character education initiative in its outreach activities. As a member of an athletic program at Clemson, student-athletes and coaches can expect to have countless opportunities to enrich the lives of the surrounding community, a crucial part of student-athlete development.
