Amelia in search of winning season BY CHRIS CHANEY Sun staff
The 2013 edition of the Amelia Barons are chasing the same thing that has eluded every Amelia squad dating back to 1998: a winning season. “We don’t have many numbers, but the kids are very focused on getting a winning season,” head coach Randy Hospelhorn said. “They’re very focused on that goal.” Coming off of a 4-6 season, the Barons came close to accomplishing their goal in 2012, but now with a whiff of that possibility, Hospelhorn expects the senior class to lead the way and end the winning drought. “Jake Miller at running back and Cohen Canter on the O-line and D-line are two seniors who

had a really good offseason and should really step it up,” Hospelhorn said. “We have Carter Hounshell, a junior, at middle linebacker and Sean Stewart and TJ Reed at defensive end. They were all standouts last year and I expect good things out of them this year. “TJ Troxell ran the ball for us last year at fullback and I’m

expecting a good season out of him.” The leadership by committee that Hospelhorn is hoping to get from his seniors will not only come from Miller and Canter, but also fellow fourth years Donnie Sellers, Gary Sunday, Logan Hughes, Nathan Seebohm, Nick Pangallo and Randy Hartley. Similar to the way that most Clermont County programs are leaning, the Barons will run a
spread offense with running options out of the pistol. Milller, Canter and Troxell will be featured in the Amelia offense with junior quarterback Tyler Nicodemus at the helm. Defensively, Hospelhorn and the Barons aren’t too keen to share what other teams will face when they line up across from the white and blue, saying “let them figure it out.” As has become tradition,
Amelia will open their season on Aug. 30 against West Clermont Local School District rival Glen Este on the Trojans’ home turf. If a winning season is in the cards for Amelia, they will have to make some hay in the Southern Buckeye Conference throughout the season, playing four of their nine games against American Division foes with the first league game coming halfway through the season when they host Goshen.

Young Bulldogs look to duplicate 2012 success BY CHRIS CHANEY Sun staff
Coming off of a historic 2012 season, the Batavia Bulldogs return to the gridiron with some new faces, but the same expectations. “Expectations are the same every year,” head coach Don Sizer said. “We have three goals: state champs, city champs, league champs. You shoot for those every year, but we have some expectations because of our personnel. We’re going to have a lot of kids playing — young kids — we’re going to keep things simple and let them have some fun.” The most recognizable returning face from the Bulldogs’ postseason run last year is junior quarterback KeShawn Foley, a 6-foot-
Don Sizer
3, 230 pound force that Sizer expects to play a big role in Batavia’s success this season. “He’s a horse and we’re going to ride him, for sure,” Sizer said. “But we’re not going to beat him to death, we’re going to spread the
“Our rush defense has to improve from last season,” Dreyer said. “The last two games we allowed over 1,000 yards rushing, combine. As a team that’s what we focused on the most this offseason.” The Bronco offense has made some improvements as well. Senior quarterback Devyn Wood has been working with his receivers to make the offense “faster and better.” “As a team we can play very fast,” Dreyer said. “We might not be the quickest team speed wise, but the tempo is going to be as fast paces as possible. We’re going to try to play basketball on grass. That’s who we are as a team right now.”

ball around and use our other kids’ talents as well. “I think when you have a good player like (Foley) and you try to use him every single play, you actually diminish his success and the team’s success. You want them to key in on everyone else, so when (Foley) does get his turn, he’s able to be more dynamic.” Foley will head up an offensive unit that replaces a handful of senior All-Stars with new names in their old positions. Shaun Howe, Sean Hill, and Tyler Woods will play alongside returning starter Tony Gatto. They will try to use their speed to get to the edge more often and spread out defenses in order to keep the middle of the field open as an option as well. The Bulldogs will try and spread the field out a unique Batavia-style Wing-T that also accentuates Foley’s ability to
throw the ball. Sizer was quick to compliment his coaching staff on how well they have developed receivers because, as the coach said, a quarterback with an arm is no good throwing to receivers with no hands. Defensively, Sizer said that Batavia will look very similar to what they did last year, developing their talent throughout the year, starting with simple play calls and adding different variations as players become more comfortable with the system. It is the hope of Sizer and his staff that the 2013 version of the Bulldogs can be just as successful, if not more so, than their 2012 counterparts. Batavia and the rest of the area will find out if that is the case beginning on Aug. 30 when the Bulldogs travel to New Miami for their season opener.

Broncos want to play basketball on grass BY BRANDON BARB Brown County Press
The five team captains for Western Brown have two things on their collective minds, beating Batavia and Norwood – the teams who gave the Broncos their end of the season losses last year. With a record of 8-2 last season, the Broncos could just hope for the same this year, but what kind of football team would they be if that was the case?
“This season we return a lot of experience,” Western Brown head coach Evan Dreyer said. “Last year we were very inexperienced in a lot of key positions, and this year we look forward to seeing that grow.” Among the returning players are the senior captains; Devyn Wood, Derrick Mcintosh, Justin Longbottom, Ryan Fulner and Kalan Kaumpf. The Bronco leaders are agreed on making it to the playoffs, even winning the SBC
CMYK
title if everything goes to plan. And with the program moving down to Division III, after spending a few years in Division II, those goals are very much in reach. “It helps us be on a level playing field with teams that have the same enrollment (as us) and its great to be able to compete and (hopefully) make it to week 11,” Dreyer said. He continued, “Last season, 8-2 in Division II was a great record.
This season we’re just going to play each day, try to improve and take each week as it comes.” Taking each week, and opponent, one by one is the mentality Dreyer is trying to instill on his players. “Sometimes high school athletes look way beyond the next game, so we are going to improve our focus on a daily basis,” he said. What happens on the field determines if the Broncos will be enter-
ing the playoffs though, and there hasn’t been any time wasted in that aspect. The biggest change Bronco fans will notice is the new defensive look. This season Dreyer decided to go with a 3-4 defense, which nine of the returning players will be on. In a nutshell, it will be “very basic” with different looks being thrown at opposing offenses. The plan with changing the defense is to be “very fast” and stop the run.

Tigers have high hopes in Jenike’s second season BY CHRIS CHANEY
lem getting in.” As a result of the shakeup, there are less teams in the region and the same number of playoff spots to fill, thus making the Wildcats’
chances that much better. The Wildcats open their season against Reading on Aug. 30 and will begin league play on Sept. 27 at Blanchester.
Sun staff
In his second year at the helm of the Bethel-Tate football program, head coach Bill Jenike is in the midst of turning the Tigers around using the weapons that he inherited. Initially, Jenike and the Tigers were encouraged by the amount of student-athletes that signed up to play football this year, but when two-a-days started up, the number of newcomers willing to put in the work dwindled. Still, Jenike likes the squad he has and has high hopes for the 2013 campaign. “The group we got has nine seniors that have been with us for two years,” the coach said. “In our scrimmage, it was good to see the improvement that those kids have shown being with us through the year. That’s what you look for when you’re coaching. “Every year’s different with personnel and finding out what’s

best for the kids that you have in terms of putting them in the position to win.” Jenike and his staff decided that in order to put his players in the best position to win that an overhaul of the offensive and defensive strategies was in order. Offensively, the Tigers will run a pistol zone-read option, which accentuates the ability and speed of second-year junior quarterback Allan Haave. Haave has a nice running mate in the backfield in senior All-Southern Buckeye

Conference running back Blace Haviland. Blocking for Haviland and Haave will be Brandon Lewis and Samuel Price will be a nice throwing option at the tight end position. On the defensive side of the ball, Bethel-Tate will run a defense that mirrors the changing culture of football in Clermont County; more specifically, a defense that defends more against the pass-first offense many teams
are switching to. The Tigers will run a 3-3 stack defense that employs 3 linemen and three linebackers with five defensive backs that can crash the box or cover more receivers as the offense dictates. In the eyes of the Ohio High School Athletic Association, Bethel-Tate is now a Division V school, but with eight games against big-school opponents, they have their work cut out for them. Accordingly, the Tigers
have scheduled games against fellow small schools Oyler (week one) and Troy Christian (week five) that give them a better idea of what they could be up against in the postseason. “I think if we get the ball rolling with some wins early, it could be a good year,” Jenike said. The Tigers will open with the aforementioned Oyler High School on Aug. 30 at home.

Williamsburg’s returning experience should bode well for the Wildcats. Head coach Scott Lefker believes that the maturity gained through a year of varsity experience will garner more wins.

Wildcats hope to build on experience BY CHRIS CHANEY Sun staff
Williamsburg head coach Scott Lefker has liked what he has seen in the preseason from his Wildcat squad, but he wouldn’t go so far as to make any guarantees. The Wildcats, who went 3-7 last season, return experience at many positions and Lefker hopes that those experiences can translate into more wins. “Expectations-wise, I’m hoping we’ll be a little more competitive than last year,” the coach said.

will be more prepared and be better leaders. We’re looking forward to building on that 3-7 season.” Starting from the top down, the Wildcats will be led by two-year starting quarterback Lane Edminsten, junior Mason Hall, a second-year starting running back and Jordan Wright, Brad Jones and Nick Felts, returners all, on the line to block for Edminsten and Hall. The Wildcats will run an offense out of the pistol formation that will be spread about half the time, Lefker said.
On the other side of the ball, junior defensive end Jared Spurlock will once again be rushing the passer from the edge and Felts will turn around and play on the defensive line as well. In the secondary, Austin Horn will head up a defense that Lefker expects to be more athletic and faster, which he hopes will prevent giving up as many scores. “Last year we gave up too many points, so the goal is to give up two scores or less (in each game) this year and I think we have the defense to do it.”
The defensive formation charged with that task will be a 44 attacking defense. Another goal for the Wildcats will be to earn a playoff berth. With the Ohio High School Athletic Association switching up the divisional breakdown, Williamsburg is now a Division VI school. “Our opportunities are greater to make the playoffs,” Lefker said of what the change means. “In the past, we’ve been 8-2 and didn’t get in, but how it’s set up now, if we go 8-2, we shouldn’t have a prob-

The Clermont Northeastern Rockets aren’t looking in the rearview mirror; they are focused on the here and now. Last season was last season and head coach Jason Conley is liking what he’s seeing from his squad as the Rockets prepare to kick off their 2013 campaign. “This group is having a lot of fun and their attitudes and (willingness) to come out here and play football is going to help us to go further than we did last year,” Conley said. “They’re flying to the ball and moving around. The attitude is much better this year and they are working harder than in the past, so I think we can definitely have a better season because of that.” Heading up that change in work ethic and attitude are a group of players that include senior center and inside linebacker Josh Forkner, sophomore running back and outside linebacker Dalton Miracle and senior quarterback Dylan Creager. Conley also said that the addition of some new players moving

into the district have reinvigorated the team’s morale and have put a spark into their practices that had been lacking. Strategically, the Rockets will be running a spread pistol featuring as many as four wide receivers on the outside, hopefully spreading opposing defenses out and giving CNE the ability to run the ball as well. Defensively, the CNE will run a 3-5-3 defense that will rely on their versatile linebacking corps to either drop into coverage or stop the run depending on the opponent’s offensive makeup. While the Rockets lost a few seniors of their own to graduation, Conley said that CNE’s Southern Buckeye Conference National Division rivals did so as well, creating a fairly level playing field heading into the 2013 season. Conley pointed to Batavia as the

odds-on favorite heading into the season, sight unseen, but expects Williamsburg, Bethel-Tate and Blanchester to be competitive in the league as well. The Rockets will get their season underway on Aug. 30 when they host Fayetteville-Perry. Clermont Northeastern’s sched-
ule includes nonconference games against Madeira, Amelia and Goshen prior to getting their league season underway in week five when they host defending SBC champions Batavia. A tough schedule throughout the season will see the Rockets face four of the six teams from the
other side of the SBC, all of whom are larger schools and could cause some matchup problems for CNE in terms of personnel. However, Conley thinks his team can surprise some people if they continue to work hard and leave everything they have on the field.

New coach brings new system to New Richmond BY CHRIS CHANEY Sun staff
O D D
Coming into the 2013 season, seemingly the only thing that isn’t “new” at New Richmond is the name. First-year head coach Josh Stratton has overhauled the program in his first few months at the helm, introducing a new offense, defense and scheme terminology while holding true to the Lions’ tradition of hard work. Armed with a senior-laden roster, the Lions hope to improve upon their .500 season a year ago, but don’t expect the new coach to promise anything in terms of wins and losses. “My expectations are that our kids are going to show up every day and work hard,” Stratton said.

“I don’t really have expectations as far as record on the season or anything like that — just day to day.” The day-to-day grind has been in full force for New Richmond for a while now with a dedicated group that has been in the weight

room throughout the offseason. And since preseason camp began a few weeks back, the Lions have been doing their best to acclimate themselves with the new systems brought in by Coach Stratton. The Lions will run a spread offense headed up by senior quarterback Levi Simpson who in his second year as the New Richmond
signal caller has proven his ability to be an all-around quarterback. Simpson will have a strong receiving corps to open up the offense to led by senior Malik Davis. The Lions will also retain their ability to run the ball, splitting carrying duties between senior Blake Thompson and junior Tyler Anderson, who will run behind a “loaded” offensive line led by a trio of seniors: Cole Goodnow, Nathan Snider and Jacob Hurst. Sophomore Tyler Sammons, standing 6-foot-2 and weighing in at 272 pounds, will start at right tackle. The coach said that he is loaded with potential and a pigskin fanatic who hasn’t missed a workout or practice since entering the program a year ago. Stratton was also high on fellow sophomore Austin Torrens, a wide receiver, who the coach believes will be a big offensive weapon in just his second season in red and black. On the defensive side of the ball, Stratton said the defense has done an admirable job picking up the new terminology and coverages brought in. The defense will be led by Evan Brigner, a senior inside linebacker, and senior nose guard Will Lytle.
Stratton also made sure to make special mention of Jake Hauke whom he called the “most consistent hard worker on the team.” Hauke will lead a secondary of mostly upperclassmen The Lions open up against Indian Hill for the second consecutive year on Aug. 30 at home. New Richmond won last year 2114.

Can the Rockets dust themselves off for a winning season? BY BRANDON BARB Brown County Press
After winning only seven games during three seasons, the Fayetteville Rockets have hopes of turning their program around this year. To help with the turn around, a new head coach, Nathan Geers, was hired and he brought with him a new staff – as well as new offensive plans. “It’s a great situation and a great opportunity. We can make it (the program) grow and blossom into something special,” Geers said.
Nathan Geers
Even though the Rockets have seen three coaches in four seasons, Geers doesn’t feel any pressure in his new position. He is comfortable in his surroundings after

spending the last two years as the Fayetteville defensive coordinator. “We’re coming in with high expectations. We think we can do bigger and better things, and we hope to accomplish that,” Geers said. Geers’ staff have the bar set high, but so do the players. The returning seniors, including Tanner Burchett and Andrew Dowers, are helping to anchor the team and right the ship this season. “We’re playing with a lot more heart this year,” Burchett said. “This senior class has some experience, they know what its
like on Friday night and what it takes to win games,” Geers said. As far as on the field goes, the defense is more or less staying the same while the offense has been changed. The Rockets are still going to be a heavy run team, just with a few new looks and formations. “All of our pieces on offense are mainly back, including our quarterback, tailback and receiving threats,” Geers said. “We’re going to a double wing look, which is completely different from last year.” Last season the offense was pri-
marily run out of a Power-I formation, but with the new look, and teams were able to catch onto to the plays. This season, Geers wants to make every play look the same, hoping to catch teams off guard. On the other side of the ball, expect to see the same 3-4 front as last year with as much pressure being put on the quarterback as possible. “Every week will be exciting,” Geers said. “Our kids won’t back down from anyone and they will put in the effort to make sure this program has continued success.”

strides to become a consistent player, the Eagles will be playing on one of the best fields in Clermont County come the team’s home opener on Sept. 6. The new field turf being installed at Milford is expected to be finished in days and the show of good faith made by the boosters of the school have Elkin excited for where his program is going. “I think it’s exciting,” Elkin said of the new turf. “I’ve been here for

15 years and I couldn’t tell you the last time something of this magnitude in the football program has taken place in terms of such a large investment by so many stake holders.” The team that will be performing on the new field will be led by junior quarterback Drew Ashcraft and Elkin believes the team’s success hinges greatly on Ashcraft’s ability to master the system he is running. “He’s involved in a lot of the decision making on the field,” Elkin said. “Everything we do is option-based. Every play could be checked out of by our quarterback or our receivers, so the more in sync they become, the better we can be.” The Eagles will run a variation of the spread option that uses Ashcraft as well as running backs Josh Fardy and Jack Young. Elkin said he expects the pair to help

Ashcraft a lot. Out wide, junior Drew Richards and sophomore Ben Greenwell will be the Eagles main playmakers. With such a well-rounded offense Elkin expects the different weapons to open up seams and opportunities that he hasn’t had as a head coach at Milford. On defense, Milford will run an active 3-4 with blitzes coming from a lot of different places to disorient the offense. The Eagles will start nine juniors, which has Elkin excited about the opportunity to develop a solid unit over the next two years. The Eagles begin their season on Aug. 30 against Hamilton and will get into conference play on Sept. 27 against Anderson.

Trojans hope to transform offseason workouts into wins BY CHRIS CHANEY Sun staff
The saying goes that champions are made in the offseason. If that phrase holds true, opponents of the Glen Este Trojans are in for a tough season. “The team is coming together really well,” head coach Nick Ayers said. “We had a great offseason all the way up to camp. We’ve had great two-a-days. We’ve also had some injuries, but some younger guys have stepped up allowing those older guys to heal. It’ll be good to get both groups rolling and get the entire team healthy for the season opener.” The Trojans will look to improve on their 4-6 season last year in which they went .500 in the inaugural season of the Eastern Cincinnati Conference. Returning players had a bitter taste in their mouths after dropping the last two games of 2012 in one-possession contests. So bitter is the taste that Ayers said the offseason workout attendance has been impressive. “Right now, we have about 60 (guys) on our roster and our attendance (to offseason workouts) has been between 47 and 55, so our
Nick Ayers
numbers have been pretty high,” Ayers said. “Every one was above the 80 percent mark as far as being there.” Ayers and the Trojans hope that hard work will manifest itself on the field in terms of wins. Making up the roster in 2013 will be a core of senior leadership headed up by Jordan Harris and Robbie Cann. Harris, the running back, returns as the Trojans’ most consistent offensive performer and Ayers expects him to duplicate his junior season output in his final year. Harris’ backfield mate Cann showed later in the 2012 season that he could add a dimension to the Trojans run offense as well. Both Harris and Cann will see a lot of time and touches as the Trojans will run the Wing-T out of
the pistol formation. Senior linebacker Tyler Burdick will head up the defensive unit and is getting looks from Division I colleges around the country. Backing him up in the secondary will be a trio of senior defensive
backs in Tyler Flanigan, Devon Shannon and Kyle Keszei. GE will run a 50 defense that puts five men on the line of scrimmage that puts pressure on the run game while also having the ability to be flexible enough to drop back
into coverage. The Trojans will open the season with their annual rivalry game against West Clermont Local School District foe Amelia on Aug. 30. The Trojans have won the last three season openers against the Barons.

Warriors hope to string together complete season BY CHRIS CHANEY Sun staff

A good start and mediocre finish to the 2012 season has the Goshen Warriors ready to right their wrongs in 2013 and compete for a Southern Buckeye Conference championship. Head coach Mark Slagle, the self-proclaimed “king of clichés,” believes every word of the maxims he proclaims, including what it will take for his team to have a better second half of the season. “We have to stay healthy,” he said. “With small schools, if you get to the middle of the year and lose some kids, it makes it tough (to win). We need to maintain our focus better and be able to perform when the pressure is on.” As the coach, Slagle took credit for the fall off, but believes he has a group this year that will continue to work hard throughout the season. “We feel like we’ve got talented young men and I really think our

In order to sustain that work ethic throughout the ranks, Slagle looks to his experienced linemen to lead the way. marily lining up in a shotgun spread that gives a wide-ranging receiving corps the opportunity to make some plays and heavily influence the outcome of the game. On the defensive side of the ball, Goshen will run a 4-2-5 base defense that Slagle hopes will give his team the ability to matchup
with the differing offenses run around the SBC. The Warriors schedule is the exact same as a year ago with the only difference being the site of the games. Opening the season 40 would be a dream start for Slagle and his Goshen squad, but the real test will begin on Friday, Sept. 27 when they open conference play at
Amelia. The Barons dealt the Warriors a heartbreaking 36-33 defeat last year that began Goshen’s four-game midseason skid. Before the Warriors get into the meat of their schedule, they will open up at Ross and then host Hillsboro at home in week two.

30. The Trojans have won the last three season openers against the Barons.

strides to become a consistent player, the Eagles will be playing on one of the best fields in Clermont County come the team’s home opener on Sept.

“In the past, we’ve been 8-2 and didn’t get in, but how it’s set up now, if we go 8-2, we shouldn’t have a prob-

chances that much better. The Wildcats open their season against Reading on Aug. 30 and will begin league play on Sept. 27 at Blanchester.

30 at home.

The Bronco leaders are agreed on making it to the playoffs, even winning the SBC

title if everything goes to plan.
