Well, it’s official! What was once a field at the corner of Cherry and Fourth Streets is now a garden, with nine 3-foot by 18- foot raised beds to prove it! And yes, there are now veggies and herbs growing in those raised beds. With a decent growing season weatherwise and a little bit of luck, later this summer some of those veggies will end up on the tables of some Ripley residents who otherwise might not have easy access to fresh, locally-grown produce. It has taken a number of people and partnerships to get the garden up and running. Of course, it all starts with the Ripley Village Mayor, Council, and Village Administrator— they have made the land available as well as a good water supply. Village Solicitor Jay Cutrell developed a land use agreement. Surveyor Pete Renshaw volunteered his time and services to mark off the proper boundaries on the garden property. Garden Consultant Julie Kline helped to form a Ripley Community Garden Planning Group back in the winter when the ground was snow-covered and frozen; Julie also sought out and secured the proper materials for putting together the raised beds and she continues to
lend her gardening expertise. Handyman Dan Henshaw and a retired engineer volunteer put up the electric fence and built the raised beds, and this same volunteer and Al Liggett worked very hard to rabbit-proof the garden fence (Al also took charge of conquering the village water pressure and saving our hoses!). A local artist generously painted and donated a wonderful sign for the garden, donated plants, and spent a lot of time organizing and helping with numerous garden-related activities, including setting up our Facebook page. Ripley Women’s Club Conservation Chair Carol Stivers took charge of recruiting and coordinating communication with our group of community gardeners, and this month Carol and Druann Kendrick, RWC President, began working two garden plots to serve the community. Several other residents such as Martha and Danny Fithen, Chad Sheffield, Walt Orlowsky, Sandy Germann, Miguel Juanez, Alison Gibson, Sonja Cropper, and Syl, Teresa and Heather Flores have also contributed time, helping to fill the raised beds with compost and topsoil. Most of these individuals have donated seeds and/or plants and are also tend-

ing garden plots along with Amy Smith and Brent Mussinan. And speaking of compost, Nelson and Jo Ann Otto provided the well-rotted horse manure which is so good for improving our garden soil. Many thanks to all who have helped to make the garden a reality! The Community Garden is supported in part with start-up funds &
technical assistance from the Adams-Brown Creating Healthy Communities Program (ABCHCP), which is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, administered by the Ohio Department of Health, and coordinated locally by the Area Health Education Center of the University of Cincinnati AHEC Program. Additional
funds to help come from the Adams-Brown Diabetes Education Coalition’s Together on Diabetes grant and the Ripley Foundation. Future Without Poverty (FWOP) is the umbrella non-profit group affiliated with the garden; FWOP has signed the land use agreement with the Village for the garden and, in addition to growing two
garden plots, helps with other organizational issues. Stay tuned for other updates on the garden’s progress! For more general information about the garden or to volunteer to help, please contact Carol Stivers at 937-392-1135, Syl Flores at 940-2684987, or Sue Basta at 937378-4171.
