THE NEWS DEMOCRAT BCRWA water to begin flowing to Aberdeen BY Wayne Gates After seven years of political battles, one year of construction and five million dollars spent, Aberdeen residents will soon be receiving water from the Brown County Rural Water Association. BCRWA board members and officials invited Aberdeen Mayor Jason Phillips and council members to mark the completion of the project on August 24. The process of bringing water to the entire village will be gradual, with lines being tested and flushed as the water is introduced into the Aberdeen system. The process is expected to be complete in about 30 days. Aberdeen Mayor Jason Phillips said he is looking forward to completing the process. “I’m excited for it. The
people of the village voted for this and they are getting what they asked for. We just finished a tour of the (BCRWA) water plant. Things look great and we will be in good shape once it’s all completed,” said Phillips. The addition of Aberdeen will add about a thousand new customers to the BCRWA. “That’s about a ten percent growth in our customer base,” said BCRWA President Lowell Allen. “There was little opportunity for us to grow in Brown County, so when you get an opportunity to grow and also provide good service, that’s a winwin.” BCRWA General Manager Dan Sarbach said that 22 miles of new pipeline and a new water tower were built to complete the project. Fayetteville, Russellville Eastgate traffic relief planned join Ohio Checkbook BY Megan Alley
BY Wayne Gates Brown County residents can now look over the bills of three more governments in the county. The villages of Fayetteville and Russellville and Scott Township are now submitting their financial records to OhioCheckbook.com. The site is operated by the office of Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel and allows people to search, in detail, the financial transactions of participating entities. Site users can search individual departments and even specific individual
checks issued at the state and local level. The village of Mt. Orab, Pleasant, Byrd and Eagle townships and Georgetown and RULH schools also participate in the system. The village of Ripley, along with Lewis and Union township have also committed to using the system, according to Public Affairs Liaison Jamie Barker of Mandel’s office. “Our state site has 147 million transactions covering 534 billion dollars in state spending over eight and a half fiscal years,” said Barker. Fayetteville Mayor
Randy Carson said he hoped that Fayetteville residents will take a look at the site. “Council and I both felt that it was very important that we become transparent. It’s the taxpayer’s money and they need to be able to see where their money is being spent,” Carson said. Dan Risko, Deputy Director of Public Affairs for Mandel, said that about 770 local entities around the state were on the website. “The taxpayers love it. They are thanking us for CONTINUED ON PAGE 9

The project, which is part of segment 4a of the Eastern Corridor program, is intended to improve traffic flow from Eastgate to Batavia, according to Charlie Rowe, transportation engineer for the Ohio Department of Transportation, District 8 in Lebanon. Due to $5 million in funding that was recently secured from ODOT’s Highway Safety Improvement Program, the project start date has been moved CONTINUED ON PAGE 7

On September 7, the Brown County Board of Developmental Disabilities (BODD) will host an informative lecture about STABLE Accounts, which were recently created by the Ohio Treasurer’s Office, according to Robert Hatcher, Transition Coordinator and MUI Coordinator with the BODD. The program will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Brown County Educational Service Center in Georgetown.
STABLE Accounts, is an investment account now available to eligible individuals with disabilities. The accounts are made possible by the federal Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) account. The account allows individuals with disabilities to save and invest money without losing eligibility for certain public benefits programs like Medicaid, SSI or SSDI. The S.A.L.T (School to Adult Life Transition) program is designed to help
adults with disabilities understand changes on waivers, navigating social security, Medicaid and BCMH, local resources and transition planning. Hatcher said that S.A.L.T. has been proven to help young people with disabilities, as they leave school, make the transition to life as an adult, a little easier. “A representative from Ohio Treasurer, Josh Mandel’s office, will be present to teach all of us how this STABLE program works and answer questions,”
Hatcher said. “STABLE accounts allow individuals with disabilities to save and invest up to $14,000 per year without losing their government benefits.” The program is offered through the Employment First Local Leaders collaboration of Brown, Clinton, Fayetteville and Highland Counties. According to a publication by the American School Counselor Association, the transition from school to adult life has been especially difficult for the approximately 10% of
Karen Oakley; • Georgetown Police Officer Shaun Inlow; • Kevin Hamilton of Life Song Counseling; • Attorney Christine Tailer. Topics discussed during the meetings have included financial issues, educational assistance and availability of resources such as food pantry, counseling services, clothing closets, etc. The meetings are facilitated by Attorney Julie Steddom and Rose Ann Townley, client services director of the Pregnancy Resource Center, A Place of Hope. Childcare is provided and refreshments will be served. As a grandparent who, along with her husband, is parenting grandchildren, Rose Ann Townley, finds these meetings very helpful. She emphasizes, "Through the GAP meetings, I have been helped by knowing what other grandparents are going through. It is also encouraging to find out what has worked and not worked for others. It is a good place to talk to someone who understands because they are going through the same thing."
Eugene Smiley will be the guest speaker at the Thursday, September 8, 2016 meeting. He is a Certified Adoption Assessor in Ohio, a Nationally Certified Custody Evaluator (NCCE), and a Nationally Certified Parenting Coordinator (NCPC). He is a member of the American Counseling Association (ACA), and the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC). Mr. Smiley works with the Brown County Domestic Relations Court by teaching classes for the
program, Helping Children Cope With Family Separation. Parents going through a divorce are required to participate in this program in order to be better prepared to help their children through this difficult time. Grandparents (and anyone else) who are parenting children other than their own are invited to attend the monthly GAP meetings. For more information call Julie Steddom at 937378-3033, Rose Townley at 937-378-6853, or email dottie@steddomlaw.com.

Remembering that first piano lesson
In last week’s Press, I was thrilled to read about the piano students that entertained the Veterans with a piano recital! Mrs. Paula Rankin took nine students, ages four to thirteen for their first “public piano recital.” I remember hearing, at the precious age of four, soon after we moved to the country to our farm, “Girls, you remember Mrs. Rembis,” mother began, “She is going to give you piano lessons.” At first thought it seemed exciting. I imagined playing like her as I had watched her play on Sunday mornings. I imagined I would sit down on

the piano bench and the music would flow from my fingers while they danced on the ivory keys. This little girl soon learned it wasn’t so easy. Achievable yes—easy no. We got our first piano from another neighbor up the road, Mrs. Turner, who lived between the Rembis' and us. It was an old upright that took an army to maneuver. It played real nice. It arrived in due time and we placed it in the dining room, the room with out a table where mother liked to sprinkle clothes down then iron them while watching Ruth Lyons. The next week Mrs. Rembis came, always so elegant in a dress, with matching, earrings and necklace, a handbag that matched her shoes, and if she wore sandals, her nail polish matched both toes and fingers. I suppose because of her elegant dress, was the main reason mother insisted we change out of our play clothes and wash up, especially our hands and face and comb our hair. On the piano bench, Mrs. Rembis usually checked my hands. “We don’t want dirty hands to touch the piano ivories,”
she would say ever so sweetly. Each week we learned another music note and the corresponding key. And when we played as the music was written, (or almost) she awarded us a star, a bird or flower sticker of our choice, to lick (I loved licking the glue) and place it on the page. Or she might write a note on the page with her red pencil: “Next week,” or “Very Good.” Week after week we took lessons and once we could play “a tune,” we were invited to play at her annual piano recital held at the Buford Church of Christ. On that day, we dressed up in our Sunday best. I didn’t realize, but soon learned, we would be playing in front of the many other students along with their families—an audience! Oh my. It was nerve wracking to say the least, worrying if I would mess up in front of all these people. My turn came quickly, since I was a beginner. My name was called out and what I would be performing. I went forward with my music book. I looked her way for a nod to begin. I curved my fingers, as she had instructed me so many times. My fingers began to move on the keys, (my heart beating heavily in my ears) when the tempo started picking up much more quickly than I had practiced but I couldn’t slow it down as it was
written. I did manage to get through the piece with out a sour note. I glanced toward Mrs. Rembis and I got that sweet smile and a wink. I grabbed my book and hurried back to the pew. My sister’s all played for the chorus. Not me. I liked being outdoors on the farm with the farm animals. I still do. But Mrs. Rembis taught me the basics and I can entertain myself on the piano. Before she passed, I had her over for a luncheon. “Mrs. Rembis, I have been “practicing” and I don’t want you to feel like a failure since I quit taking lessons early on. I want to play Pachelbel’s Canon for you.” She smiled and nodded. I sat down and took a deep breath, curved my fingers and played (an easy arrangement of course) for an audience of two, her and my mother. And I did it! My solo recital turned out grand. I salute with many thanks the piano teachers like Rankin and Rembis who touch our lives and teach us the gift of music that will inevitably last a lifetime. Sherry is a regular contributor to the Press. To contact her or to share memories of Mrs. Rembis you may e-mail her at sherryphillipsmitchell@ya hoo.com
You don’t have to look very far, from any spot in America, to see what poverty looks like. For many in poverty, another way of life is something on TV and seemingly not obtainable. In his 1964 State of the Union address, President Lyndon B. Johnson declared an “unconditional war on poverty in America.” While well-intended, census data shows that 52 years and trillions of dollars later, the official poverty rate in 2014 (14.8%) was no better than it was in 1966 (14.7%). Should we keep doing the same things? Or find a better way? A way for parents and their children to see themselves achieving their dreams and getting the most out of their talents and abilities. A way for all to embrace the opportunity that is America. Over the course of the last several months, House Republicans have gathered the best ideas from across the country and mapped out a better way to tackle poverty in our nation. We’ve laid out a plan, an agenda called “A Better Way.” This “better way” offers struggling Americans expanded opportunities - not expanded government. A large part of this plan focuses on incentivizing and rewarding work. No one in need of assistance should be penalized for taking a job or advancing in their job. The most productive reform for any capable human being is employment. In a small Southern Ohio town, below a beautiful mural of people at work, are the words: “To rejoice in his labor, for it is a gift from God.” Yet I’ve heard time and again across Ohio and America that for many receiving government assistance, it may not always pay to work. For many, climbing the income ladder at work results in drastic cuts to government assistance all at once, making it more beneficial not to work at all. Why do we punish people simply because they showed promise and worked hard? At Bethany House Shelter in Cincinnati, many women there report their frustration with the federal system. Often, when the opportunity for work presents itself, they are faced
with their children losing healthcare coverage. Essentially, then, these women are penalized for trying to improve their situation in life and, instead, find themselves in a government system that paralyzes their future. This should never be the case. That’s why House Republicans’ Better Way plan proposes a more modest “sliding scale” for government benefits: as you earn more income, your benefits are slowly decreased to ensure you always come out ahead. Hard work, success, and personal achievement should be recognized and rewarded, not serve as a barrier. Our Better Way plan contains more changes like this at the federal level, which are key to lifting people up and out of poverty, but our plan also emphasizes the major role local actors play in helping the impoverished in our communities. In Southern Ohio, employers, charities, and other groups are battling poverty on the front lines and empowering people to achieve their American Dream. Take Nehemiah Manufacturing for example, one of our small businesses in Cincinnati. Since their founding in 2009, Nehemiah has partnered with local social service agencies to create 100 new jobs geared specifically toward “Second Chance Employees” - individuals who have had challenges finding employment due to criminal records, spotty work history, and/or little training and education. I have met many of the proud, hardworking individuals at Nehemiah that make that company successful. Those 100 new jobs equal 100 opportunities for meaningful work. One hundred chances to pursue the American Dream. One hundred lives changed for the better. Many more are waiting. Together, with common sense and dedication to each other, we can do more. There is a better way. Learn more at www.better.gop

over the top, but remember that the native plants you plant do make a difference. When you plan your garden – think like a pollinator. Provide a variety of flower colors and forms, and mass many of the same plants together. Bees are well-known pollinators, but over 100,000 invertebrates – including butterflies, moths, wasps, flies, and beetles – and over 1,000 mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, act as pollinators, according to the National Wildlife Federation. After the lectures we divided into groups to head outside for field trips. My group numbered about 12 and we started walking along the edge of the woods. In 30 minutes I realized we had only travelled about 50 yards. The discoveries were numerous and the leaders of the group were very knowledgeable. Caterpillars, flies, moths, butterflies, skippers, bees,

and plant identification kept us in such a small area until the rain came pouring down on us. The find of the day was the Giant Swallowtail caterpillar (Papilio cresphontes). The early instar of this caterpillar actually has a great disguise to confuse predators. When viewed from the side and top its appears to be bird droppings! Its shiny skin adds to the disguise, giving the larvae the character of a freshly deposited dropping. I am pretty sure we stood at this area for at least 10 minutes taking pictures and marveling at Mother Nature. So there you have it. My deep, dark secret has been exposed. I love to wander around – turning leaves over –hunting for caterpillars! Interested in learning more about caterpillars? Go to Ohioline.osu.edu and click on the tab, Yard and Garden. Then type the word Caterpillar and click search. You will find a great factsheet on Caterpillars!

When you think of something exciting to do on a Saturday, does sitting all day learning about pollinators ever come to mind? It sounds a little crazy, but after arriving at the workshop, sponsored by the Midwest Native Plant Society, the large room was soon packed! Before the first speaker, I checked out the displays and discovered caterpillars, and a Luna Moth with at least a 100 eggs. The speakers were impressive. Heather Holm, author of “Pollinators of Native Plants”, Denise Ellsworth, program director of the Honey Bee and Native Pollinator Education Program in Ohio State’s College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and Cheryl Harner, an environmental educator, reminded the audience of the importance of all pollinators. Bees are beneficial insects that pollinate flowering plants by transferring pollen from one flower to another. This is important for plant reproduction and food production. In fact, pollinators are responsible for 1 out of every 3 bites of food you take. While the honey bee gets most of the credit for providing pollinations, there are actually about 500 bee species in Ohio. Holm challenged us to “Bee a Habitat Hero” and tear up your backyard and plant native plants, remembering the importance of native flowering plants throughout the growing season and supporting all life stages of pollinators. “Lawns are the best way to travel from garden to garden” stated Cheryl Harner. “Friends don’t let friends grow lawns”. I know that seems a little

A HORRIBLE PIT Gratitude is an excellent motivator. Christian, when things are rough and you are feeling down, try putting on some thankfulness. If you have received Christ as your Saviour you ought to be thankful that He brought you out of a horrible pit. Turn with me to Psalms 40. It begins: "I WAITED patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings". Jesus is the Rock! Look, it does not matter if you were raised in a Christian home or if you came from a terrible background. Either way you were in a horrible pit until you were saved. Let's go to the book of Romans and look at chapter 5 beginning in verse 6: "For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly". Before you were saved you were stuck in a quagmire. No matter how strong you were or how hard you struggled to get out, you alone had no strength to do so. You might have tried good works, or being religious, or even getting a higher education. But, without Christ, you are without strength. Trying to redeem yourself never works. However, it says : "...in due time Christ died for the ungodly". Before you were saved, you were ungodly, even if you considered yourself a good person! Romans 3:10-12 states: "As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one". Without Christ, no matter how "good" you think you are, you are still ungodly! You cannot get yourself to heaven in your own strength! You need Jesus. Go back to Romans 5 now and look at verses 7-8: "For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some
REV. TED R. HOUSE BIBLE BAPTIST CHURCH MT. ORAB www.bbcmtorab.com would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us". Notice the words "were sinners". Folks, you and I, before we got saved, were sinners. We are still sinners, but the difference is that now we are saved sinners! We don't live a perfect life, but we are now lifted out of the miry clay, out of the horrible pit, and we will go to heaven one day. And it is all because Christ, God's Son, died for us and arose again to offer the sacrifice of His own blood for our sins! However, before you can get saved, you have to realize that you are a sinner and you need a Saviour! In this day and age we paint sin with a soft brush! Our society no longer talks about sin. We talk about disease, about faults, and failures, but we don't talk about sin any more. But folks, we live in a sinful world and sin will entangle you in that miry clay! It will pull you down! I have had people tell me: Well, preacher, I have never killed anyone! That's good, but have you ever told a lie, taken God's name in vain, or disobeyed your parents? Come on, everyone has committed a sin sometime in their life! That makes you a sinner! Truth is, you were born a sinner. And if you don't get saved it will take you all the way down to Hell! Therefore, if you are saved, you ought to be thankful that is no longer your destination! Believe in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, ask for forgiveness and you shall be saved from that horrible pit!

He added that he is glad to see a difficult project finally coming to an end. “I am very proud that this company did everything that we said would do during this process. Now we are on the doorstep of supplying and maintaining the entire village and we look forward to it,” said Sarbach. “When the people of Aberdeen begin getting our water and see our service, that will be the reward for me,” Sarbach said. Aberdeen Council Member Billie Eitel said she also felt a sense of personal pride.
“It’s going to be very rewarding to me, after all the disagreements and arguments and everything else, to finally have good clean drinkable water,” said Eitel. “I am very proud. Sometimes it was very hard to put up with some of the arguments and fingerpointing and other issues during this process. But I’m still here at the end to see something positive happen for Aberdeen.” Eitel also mentioned former Aberdeen Council Member Jim Perrault and Phillips as deserving of recognition for the completion of the water project.

Creature Feature Can my cat get aids? Well, yes and no. Cats are susceptible to a virus that causes an immunodeficiency syndrome similar to, but different from the AIDS syndrome in people. The feline virus is now called FIV or feline immunodeficiency virus. It has previously been called feline T-lymphotrophic lentivirus (FTLV) and feline acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (FAIDS) virus. The virus that causes AIDS in people is called human immunodeficiency virus or HIV, so could easily be confused with the feline immunodeficiency virus or FIV. Although the disease syndromes caused by the two viruses are similar, they do not affect animals of other species. That is, the feline virus does not affect people, nor does the human virus affect cats. The clinical signs associated with the feline disease are varied because they are largely caused by secondary infections that affect the immunosuppressed cat. The normal resistance to those infections just isn’t there. Sometimes the only outward signs will be a general unthriftiness and poor hair coat. Other signs include fever, oral infections, skin infections, urinary bladder infections, or upper respiratory infections. Affected cats also commonly have concurrent infections with the feline leukemia virus, Toxoplasmosis, feline infectious peritonitis virus, hemobartonella, and others. Reproductive failures, abortions, seizures, and other neurologic disorders are also seen. Treatment of FIV infection is largely supportive. There are no drugs proven to be effective against the virus, but antibiotics are frequently used to control secondary
DAN MEAKIN CREATURE FEATURE
bacterial infections. Other medications to combat dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, secondary inflammation, nutritional deficits, etc., are also used. At present there is no cure. There is a blood test available that can be done either in your veterinarian’s office or sent to an outside veterinary clinical p a t h o l o g y laboratory. This test is often done in conjunction with the test for feline leukemia virus, since this virus can cause an immunodeficiency syndrome that is clinically indistinguishable from FIV. Current recommendations for a cat infected
with FIV are (1) to isolate it from other cats to keep from spreading infection as well as to keep the infected cat from acquiring secondary bacterial infections, (2) treat any clinical signs symptomatically and (3) avoid all possible sources of stress or infection. Generally this means keeping the cat indoors at all times. A vaccine to prevent FIV is currently not available. Some cats can apparently harbor the feline immunodeficiency virus for a fairly long time without being ill at all. These cats may be spreading infection to other cats. Your veterinarian can advise you on whether or not to have your cat or cats tested for feline immunodeficiency virus. Dr. Dan Meakin is the owner of All Creatures Animal Hospital, 1894 Ohio Pike in Amelia. Call 513-797-PETS (7387).

Lady G-Men unbeaten at 4-0 Georgetown volleyball squad tops Ripley, Fairfield BY Wade Linville The Brown County Press The Georgetown Lady GMen have started off their 2016 volleyball campaign on an excellent note, rising to a 4-0 overall record on the season with wins over the visiting Ripley-UnionLewis-Huntington Lady Jays on Aug. 23 and the Fairfield Lady Lions while on the road Aug. 24. The Lady G-Men won all three sets to claim the match victory while hosting the Lady Jays, After claiming wins in the first two sets, the Lady G-Men returned to dominate for a 25-11 victory in
set three to cap off the match. “They did a great job because they didn't give up, but they were a little slow,” Georgetown head volleyball coach Sue Lane said of her Lady G-Men following the win over Ripley. “Ripley has improved a lot since we scrimmaged them and we are happy to be 3-0 right now, but we have a lot of things we need to improve on this season.” The Lady G-Men began their season by topping teams from Mariemont and Bethel-Tate in a tri-match on Aug. 20. Experience has certainly played a role in the Lady G-
Men's success on the court in their first week of play, as the team is equipped with eight seniors – Alexis Cahall, Isabelle Elliott, Kassidy Seigla, Karrington Ecker, Kelsy Grant, Piper Tomlin, Sydney Carrington, and Taylor McKinney. There are also two juniors taking the court for the Georgetown varsity squad this season, Taylor Shelley and Mackenzie Bridges. “The seniors have done a great job as leaders, and they have also been leaders for the junior varsity team,” said Lane. “They are a great bunch of girls.” The Lady G-Men rose to a 2-0 lead over Ripley early on in set three of the Aug. 23 match at Georgetown, but the Lady Jays managed to cut the lead to 4-3 after a kill by Ripley's Carlee Daulton. The Lady Jays would then tie the game at four apiece as a Georgetown hit made its way out of bounds.

A new season of high school volleyball got underway for the Western Brown Lady Broncos on Saturday, Aug. 20, as they ventured to Eastern Brown High School for a tri-match to come away with wins over Eastern and Goshen. It took the Lady Broncos three sets to win the match over the Goshen Warriors, 2-1. The Lady Broncos won the first set 25-17, fell in the second set 21-25, but came back to win the third set 2518 to claim the match. It took only two sets for the Lady Broncos to seal the match victory over the home-standing Eastern Lady Warriors in Saturday's tri-match, rallying from behind to win the first set 2522 and them dominating for a 25-14 win in set two. The Lady Broncos rose to an early 2-0 in set one against Eastern, but the Eastern Lady Warriors later went on a 7-0 run to lead 72. A kill by Western Brown's Tessa Pinkerton ended the Eastern run, cutting the Lady Warriors' lead to 7-3. Capitalizing off Eastern errors and some strong play on the front line, the Lady Broncos rallied back to tie the set at nine apiece. The Lady Warriors managed to pull out in front to take a narrow 13-11 lead before the Lady Broncos battled back with a kill by Pinkerton and a service point from Mary Sizer to tie the set at 13 apiece. A hit by Eastern's Haley Fannin landed for a point to expand the Lady Warriors' lead to 18-15, but the Lady Broncos would respond by making a 4-0 run that ended with a kill by Kaitlyn Huseman. Eventually it was Eastern climbing back on top to take a 22-21 advantage, but the Lady Broncos ended the set on a 4-0 run to claim the set with Erin Bishop serving for an ace to cap off the victory. The Lady Broncos jumped out to an 8-2 lead in set two of the match against Eastern and never looked back.
An ace by Pinkerton upped the Lady Broncos' lead to 9-2. Later in the set it was Western Brown's Emily Cooper coming through with a kill to keep Pinkerton's service alive. A Bishop spike that landed for a score lifted the Lady Broncos to a 13-4 lead. The Lady Broncos lead later rose to 15-5 with a kill by Huseman. The Lady Warriors managed to cut the Western Brown lead to seven (15-8), but that's the closest they would come to the Lady Broncos who were able to
cruise to an 11-point victory in a set that ended with a kill by Huseman. Western Brown's outside hitter Erin Bishop finished the match with eight kills. Western Brown libero Mary Sizer came through with 12 digs in the win over Eastern, while middle blocker Bailie Darnall recorded two blocks, and setter Emily Cooper finished with 19 assists. The Lady Broncos were back in action Aug. 23 at Little Miami, suffering their first loss of the season in a match that lasted four sets (24-26, 25-17, 25-15, 2520).

New season gets underway for Eastern Brown High School soccer squads BY Wade Linville The Brown County Press
The 2016 soccer season got underway for the Eastern Brown High School teams on Aug. 20. The Eastern High School boys and girls varsity teams kicked off their season on Aug. 20, playing host to teams from Hillsboro for a non-league contest. The Warriors had their hands full with the skilled team of Hillsboro, and it was the Indians coming away with a 4-0 victory. Expect much improvement out of the Warriors as the season rolls along, a team that fields seven seniors including – Noah Craig, Gavin Reeves, Luke Schnapp, Drew Blanton, Joey Balas, Jacob Diener, and Brandon Tomlin. Also there are several upperclassmen on the Eastern boys soccer roster this season, there are some new faces in new places on the field including Dare Minton who has moved to the goalkeeper position with the graduation of last year's goalie Mickey Hundley. Other Eastern juniors on the soccer roster this season are Alex Bateman, Spencer West, and Dyllan Schneider. As for underclassmen, there are three sophomores (Caleb Mullins, Jon Chesley, and Noah Vargas) and two freshmen (Brett McCoy and Matt Page) who hope to contribute to the Warriors' success this season. The Warriors ventured to North Adams High School on Wednesday for their first Southern Hills Athletic Conference match-up of the season, and it was the home team from North Adams claiming a 7-1 victory. The Eastern Lady Warriors also faced some tough competition in their season opener, as the visiting Lady Indians fired for two goals in the first half to take a 2-0 lead, en route to a 6-2 victory. Madi Layton returns as the Lady Warriors' only senior this season. This year's Lady Warriors will rely heavily on the eight juniors that appear on this year's roster – Cassidy Staggs, Madison Hopkins (captain), Kiara Colliver, Jasey Dufresne (captain), Hoover, Kayla Heath, Caitlyn Brown, and Titapa Skuljuengeharoen. Also taking the field for the Lady Warriors this season are five talented sopho-
Georgetown
BY Wade Linville The Brown County Press The Georgetown G-Men kicked off their 2016 soccer campaign at Bethel-Tate on Aug. 23, facing a talented Tigers squad to open Southern Buckeye Athletic/Academic Conference National Division play. Despite a gutsy effort by the G-Men, it was BethelTate coming away with a 42 victory to up their record to 2-0 after topping St. Bernard in their season opener by a score of 8-0 on Aug. 20. Although they struggled to take control on the offensive end, the G-Men were backed by some solid defensive performances from players such as senior goalkeeper Zach Shouse, sophomore Noah Bishop, and senior Chris Hettinger. Sophomore midfielder Cameron Brookbank put together an excellent showing on both ends of the field, coming through with some big defensive plays and also scoring the G-Men's second and final goal of the contest. Coming through with a header goal earlier in the contest was Georgetown sophomore Emerson Cahall. With the game tied at one in the first half, it was a goal by freshman Sean Fallis that lifted the Tigers to a 2-1 lead. Following some dazzling saves by Shouse, the Tigers failed to get another goal in the first half, venturing to halftime break with a narrow one-goal lead. With 32:45 to go in the second half, Bethel senior Jake Clift scored the Tigers' third goal of the night to expand their lead to two. A minute later it was Georgetown senior Tanner Householder breaking free on an attack and firing off a hard shot, only to be snatched up by Bethel's junior goalkeeper Tyler Baker. With just under 22 minutes left on the clock in the second half, it was Bethel senior Zack Boston getting in on the scoring action to lift the Tigers to a 4-1 lead. Brookbank's goal came just after the midway point

On the restart, it was all Brandon Sheppard as he would go on to claim his first ever win at Moler Raceway Park in his first ever visit to the speedway which he likened to “the bullrings back home in Illinois” that he grew up on. The Best Performance, Corey Frazier State Farm Insurance, Keysor Mfg, Valvoline sponsored Rocket Chassis of Sheppard would roll into victory lane and claim the top prize while Devin Gilpin would come home in second spot ahead of Boggs who would come home in 3rd. Devin Moran would finish 4th, Duane Chamberlain 5th, RJ Conley 6th, Rod Conley 7th, John Whitney 8th, Joe Brewer 9th and Chad Stapleton completing the top ten positions. The Matt's Graphic UMP Modifieds would see a classic battle in the feature event as Devin Gilpin and Matt Hamilton would battle throughout the entire 20 lap feature event with the outcome in doubt until the final 100 yards. At the start of the feature it was Gilpin jumping to the early lead but Hamilton would waste no time getting into second and pressuring the multi-time UMP National Champion. Gilpin would start pulling away through the middle of
the race but by lap fifteen Hamilton would close the gap as they battled through traffic. The caution would wave with 5 laps remaining and on the restart the two modified aces would trade the lead multiple times with big slide jobs being performed by each. At the checkered it was Matt Hamilton in his Lt's Place, Yesco, House Racing Engines, Sign-a-rama sponsored machine. Gilpin would come home in second with Jimmy Lennex, Weasel Rhoades, and Dave Jamison completing the top five positions. Jamison, Brandon Ramsey, and Hamilton were heat race winners while Steve Clemmons was victorious in the B-main event. The Tarvin Auto Service Freedom 4's would see Dustyn Fisher claim the feature win after Chris Vance would make contact with a lap car resulting in a flat tire with 2 laps remaining. The driver out of Cincinnati would take his second career win after struggling much of the 2016 race season. Johnny Jump would claim a career best second place finish over Josh Davis, Mark Horn, and Nathan Ball. Davis and Vance were heat race winners. In the Diamond Cut Lawn Care Sport Mods it was Jamey Adams of Laurelville, OH claiming the feature win over Steve Nobile in his Lightning Chassis, Helterbran Trucking sponsored machine. Donnie Morgan would come home in 3rd spot with Tony Seibert and Jowana Shelton completing the top five positions. Both Adams and Noble were victorious in heat race action.

is talent on this team.” Kevin Hoover joins Fischer on the sidelines as cohead coach this season, while Matt Layton serves as an assistant coach. The Lady Warriors ventured to North Adams High School on Aug. 24 to suffer a 2-1 loss, and they were scheduled to be back in action on the evening of Aug. 25 with a non-league road game against Waverly.
A strong field of cars were on hand in all divisions for the 10th Annual Victor “Ike” Moler Memorial race at Moler Raceway. In late model qualifications it was Grayson, Kentucky's Jackie Boggs setting quick time with a 12.740 lap in his McCoy Bros Logging, Quest Energy sponsored machine. Heat race #1 would see Boggs battle with Columbus, Indiana's Devin Gilpin as the veteran would take the win over the youngster. Heat race two would see Berlin, Illinois driver Brandon Sheppard take the win over Wheelersburg’s Rod Conley. Heat three would see Wheelersburg's RJ Conley take the win over Lawrenceburg, Indiana’s Jason Jameson. In the B-main event it was Bunbury, Australia's Paul Stubber taking the win over Bethel, Ohio's Chris Shannon. In the 50 lap main event, it was Boggs to the lead early but by lap 3 it was Boggs, Gilpin, Sheppard, and Jameson all battling 2-3 wide up front and it was evident that something was going to have to give. A caution on lap seven for the spinning machine of Jeff Alsip would slow the field. And on the restart Sheppard would waste no time in taking the lead from Boggs and pulling away out front. As that happened it was Jameson charging into second position following a lap 10 caution for Michael Hildebrand. For the next 25 laps, it would be Sheppard and Jameson out front setting a torrid pace on the field. While those two were
