THE NEWS DEMOCRAT Mt. Orab Auto Mall open for business BY Wayne Gates The Mt. Orab Auto Mall is now open for business. Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Ram customers began coming in for sales and service on Friday, September 2. “We are having a soft opening celebration at all three locations, Beechmont Ford, the current Mt. Orab Ford location and right here at the auto mall,” said Auto Mall Manager Mike Carmichael. He added that the auto mall project has been keeping everyone very busy. “We have hired 14 people between the two stores in the past two weeks,” Carmichael said. “We’ve got a state of the art facility for service and parts, and we will be working extended hours to give people a chance to come and see us.” Carmichael said that the Ford

dealership on the site should be open by the end of this month, and that the growth at the auto mall won’t stop there. “Once we’re done with the Ford dealership, our plans are to move forward and build more stores. We have space for five or six different dealerships, so we are moving full steam ahead,” Carmichael said. “We have been talking to all the big manufacturers to fit what the best fit is for us out here. It’s certainly our plan to offer the big three domestic car dealerships at the same location so a Chevy/GM dealership would be high on our list.” Carmichael said that he and his staff are very happy to be in a new building. “We have a larger service space for lifts and other equipment that will allow us to do the volume that we’re looking to do,” he said. “I’ve got a showroom that I can

put seven cars in versus two, we have the space for a nice customer lounge with great seating, a flat screen TV and a coffee bar. It’s all geared toward the customer experience.” A formal grand opening is scheduled at the auto mall for September 11. “That will be an all day celebration celebrating our grand opening and our country and we will have a fireworks display at the end of the night,” Carmichael said. Country artists Mark Chesnutt and Joe Diffie, along with The Dan Varner Band, 3 Piece Revival and Blessid Union of Souls will be giving concerts during the day. The gates will open at noon, with the fireworks scheduled for 9:45 p.m. “Come out and enjoy our new facility and give us a chance to earn and keep your business, and be patient with us as we grow,” Carmichael said.

Brittany Stykes death Final ballot set for “Sardinia Remembers” is remembered November election 9/11 attack on Sept. 10 BY Wayne Gates Brittany Stykes was remembered by family and friends on August 28, the third anniversary of her death. They gathered in the pouring rain at the large wooded cross at site of her murder south of Georgetown on U.S. 68. “It was a hard weekend. There are still no answers,

even with everything that’s happened up to this point,” said Stykes’ father David Dodson. “I was totally shocked at the amount of people that showed up, considering how nasty the weather was.” Dodson said he was grateful to everyone who was thinking of his family. “I’d to thank everyone CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

The village will hold a “Sardinia Remembers” day on Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Veteran’s Park beginning at 4 p.m. and closing at dark, according to Mayor Cassidy. “I believe that this event will become an annual event that should be recognized and remembered every year,” Cassidy said. “When I look around at our young people and how they see the world, I see that most of them have no grasp of what life was like before 9/11. They have no idea how our way of life has changed, and I believe they have a right to know and we as Americans should

Color Explosion Run/Walk scheduled for September 17 BY Martha B. Jacob Brown County Press The very first 5K Recovery Run/Walk Color Explosion will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17 in Georgetown, beginning with registration at 7:30 a.m with the race beginning at 9 a.m. The event, which is being sponsored by The Coalition for a Drug Free Brown County, will take place at the soccer Complex at Georgetown Exempted Village Schools, 1043 Mt. Orab Pike in Georgetown. “This fundraiser is an effort to raise money for the coalition,” said Tracey Holten, executive assistant at the Brown County Board of Mental Health and Addiction. “Our executive director Deanna Vietze is an active member

and the sacrifices they must make in order to be together. According to a staff member at the Sardinia Library, Hopkins actually lived in an Amish community for a while to make sure her books are as correct and accurate regarding Amish life, that they can be. “Ms. Hopkins visited our library in spring of 2015,” a staff member said. “She is very personable and will be talking about her new Wings of War book, “Eternity”. We are very excited

of the coalition and we are coordinating the event. “It’s going to be a lot of fun. The way it works is, as the runners participate in the 5K, volunteers will be placed at different areas of the race and as runner run past them, they gently throw a mixture of brightly colored cornstarch at each of them. The first one across the finish line really gets covered with the powder.” Holton added that the event couldn’t come at a better time, since September is officially Recovery Month, across the nation. Pre-registration is $25, and $30 the day of the race, students 13 and under is $10, pre-registration and $15 the day of the race. Registration includes a T-shirt while supplies last. The Coalition for a

Drug Free Brown County was organized in January of this year and has been working hard to raise awareness of the drug problem, not only in Brown County but across the nation. The Coalition is a community effort to aid in drug abuse prevention, provide resources, reduce risk and harm associated with drug abuse and promote drug free lifestyles. It hopes to decrease the availability of illicit drugs, establish a countywide mechanism to address the supply and demand issues of opiate or other illicit drugs. Letters to the Editor

The war on poverty has not been a failure

B R O A D S H E E T E V E N

Dear Editor, In his recent opinion piece Congressman Wenstrup expressed the oft-repeated Tea Party view that the war on poverty has failed. He cites census data revealing that the official poverty rate in 2014 (14.8%) showed no improvement compared to the 1966 rate(14.7%). However, these percentages are derived from calculations that only consider cash income and not inkind assistance to the poor such as Medicaid, WIC nutrition program, and food stamps. Also not included are tax breaks for the poor such as the Earned Income Tax Credit or child tax credits. When these non-cash forms of assistance are included a different picture emerges. Specifically, researchers at Columbia University devised a measurement of poverty that included the impact of non-cash forms of assistance on ameliorating poverty. And they found that the actual poverty rate fell 40% dur-

Letting a smell take you back Outside my farmhouse, by my side porch steps, grows a most unusual plant I like to refer to as my “reminder plant.” Last winter, a shovel of rotted horse manure exploded the growth of the plant. Its grass-green foliage was “over growing” its space for sure, so we had to tie a string around it pulling it up off the sidewalk to pass. Some would call it a nuisance because it spreads easily. A “reminder plant” for me evokes a pleasant memory. Its sole purpose is to remind you of something in your past that brought “pleasant memories” and here’s my reminder. Two little farm girls, transplanted from the city in 1962, my sister Debbie and I, soon found on the farm the best hideaway ever. It was our own little make believe world. One day we went exploring past the perimeter of our normal boundaries. We were curious as to what was on the other side of the barbwire fence. After we helped each other through, we could see an opening ahead. To reach it one must pass through a mass of green plants. The smell upon our running through it permeated quickl y. Its fragrance was marvelous and totally unexpected.

SHERRY MITCHELL TAKE JOY, A FARMHOUSE JOURNAL “What’s that smell like,” I asked. “I don’t know but I like it,” sister said sniffing a twig like me. “It smells like… chewing gum!” I blurted. And sure enough we identified it as Spearmint, my future “reminder plant.” In our newfound world, past the lush mint patch was a stream with a sandy, clay bank where I would learn to make mud pies. The cool water on our toes felt good and where I washed my pie pans, too. The whole shady area was very cool compared to the outside, sunny areas we traipsed. On the other side of the stream was a humongous Beech tree. Part of its massive root system, a tangled mess, was exposed as the bank had washed out over the years. The other half clung desperately to the bank trying to avoid its death. We climbed the root system to get u s to the next level. We found the tree was hollow with a V shaped opening, much like the elf tree for the cookie commercial on television. I could fit inside

it and look clear through to the top seeing the clouds passing by. I eventually learned to shimmy up and down it its hollow cavity. Suddenly, Debbie blurts out, “Let’s build a tree house,” pointing out two limbs that would be perfect for the floor and th e rest of the structure would rise above it. What child doesn’t want a tree house? So that’s what we did for the summer. Like little squirrels we gathered our supplies and headed across the pasture field to our hide away. Boards, used nails from Daddy’s coffee can, his hammer and saw, quickly catapulting us into the construction business. It was tough, tough work. Our “little farm girl” arms doubled in size from the exercise of pushing and pulling the saw. It felt like sawing through one 1X6” board took half a day. No matter, we learned to bring lunch along, too. Straightening the used nails was another problem in itself but we managed. Trying to “drive them home” the way Daddy did, didn’t work out exactly as we had planned. I know now, being an adult, some wood is harder than others (like Oak) and driving a na il through it is next to

impossible. Starting the nail was worse and most generally caused a strike to the finger if not pulled away in time. Or if pulled away to quickly before the nail had time to bite into the wood, the nail pinged off into the distance, never to be found no matter how hard you looked. By the end of summer we had our ladder up the tree trunk and a small floor installed. We scampered and pl ayed all summer, as did the squirrels that also liked the tree. Although the walls and the windows and the roof we dreamed of never happened, we made some great memories. “What kid,” I ask you, “wouldn’t like to spend the summer scampering over a tree like the squirrels in a make believe world?” Nature and imagination goes hand in hand. So now you can see, why I’ve purposefully planted my “reminder plant” next to my porch. Each time I pluck off a twig and press it to my nose, breathing deep its aroma, I am magnificently transported back to the glorious days of my youth. Sherry is a regular contributor to the Press. OPINION ing that same time span, proving the war on poverty was not an unmitigated failure. It's also important to note that the Republican's "Better Way" plan (also known as the Paul Ryan plan) has come under harsh criticism. In particular, Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren denounced the plan. In her words: "It looks more like an agenda for creating poverty than relieving it. In fact, if you look closely, Paul Ryan's new plan is just a shiny repackaging of Paul Ryan's old plan: Keep huge tax breaks and special loopholes open for billionaires and giant corporations, gut the rules on Wall Street, then say there's not money for Social Security, for medicare, for education, or anything else that will help struggling working families." Initiatives to end poverty are important. But let's make sure those plans to end poverty help and not hurt the poor. Rick Mino Georgetown

“Change for Charity” kicks off new year of fundraising The Brown County Change for Charity group (BCCFC) will begin its 2016-2017 fundraisers that are held each month in Brown County. “Our meetings will be held monthly at Southern Hills Career and Technical Center on Hamer Rd in Georgetown,” said Judy Martin, with Change for Charity. “Our next meeting will be at 6 p.m. on Friday Sept 9. “BCCFC is a group of volunteers that help local non-profit charities here in Brown County raise funds for their organizations. We are all independent business people (both men and women) that have home based businesses who want to help make a different in our own community.” According to Martin, during the school year the group helps charities organize their individual fundraisers, by donating their time, their products and the materials needed to hold raffles and silent auctions held at SHCTC. “We use to take the summer off, but this year we were asked to help the American Legion raise

funds to bring the Vietnam Nam wall to Brown County, the Western Brown Ladies Soccer Team and we even ventured to Clermont County to assist Wayne Township Fire Department with a .fundraiser,” Martin said. “We will be helping the following Charities this fall at SHCTC: • September 9... Open Arms Always • October...the Pregnancy Resource Center • November... Shop With a Cop • December...Brown County Humane Society. “We ask that the community come and help us help the charities and have fun in the process. The raffles are usually held the second Friday of the month, but can be moved to another day if there is a conflict with the school's schedule. “We do however, ask that everyone check our Facebook page, Brown County Change for Charity, and the Brown County Press and News Democrat, to keep up to date with the day, time and which group the event is helping.” For more information Martin can be contacted at (937) 446-1841.

With all this rain, my basil has never looked better. I’ve been using it as much as I can, because fresh basil from the garden really is a seasonal herb. Here’s a recipe for pesto which can be doubled or tripled. SMALL BATCH PESTO Put in food processor and pulse until finely minced: 1 cup basil leaves, packed 1 cup shredded Parmesan cheese 3 tablespoons pine nuts 1 large garlic clove Pepper to taste With machine running, pour in slowly: 1/2 cup olive oil plus a tablespoon or more to make a nice sauce COUNTRY KITCHEN WISDOM • Freeze for up to 6 months. • Instead of pine nuts, try slivered almonds Marcy Wilson is a former food editor who enjoys cooking and gardening with her family. BURDENS Let me share some verses with you from God's Word about a few of the burdens we carry about with us. First let's go to II Corinthians 5 and begin in verse 1: "For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens". The first burden I would like to look at is the burden of everyday life. II Corinthians 5 starts out talking about this earthly house, this tabernacle, which is the body that we live in. We know that one day it will dissolve but God has a place in heaven for us. Verses 2-3 goes on to say: "For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked". We are looking forward to that day when we are going to be with Jesus in heaven but in the meantime verse 4 says: "For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life". If you are reading this then you must be breathing, therefore you are in this tabernacle, Amen? And it says that we groan when we are in this tabernacle. The older we get the more that goes on, Amen? It says: "...we do groan being burdened..." There are everyday burdens that each and every one of us have. It is just the stuff that life is made of. Job said in chapter 14:1: "Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble". If anybody knew anything about trouble, it was Job! And in reality, our life really isn't that long. I Corinthians 10:13 says: "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man:..." There are common trials and temptations we all have. So some of the burdens that we carry we just need to realize that it is part of life. However, there are more serious burdens that some have to carry such as physical suffering and pain throughout their whole life. If you have health issues such

REV. TED R. HOUSE BIBLE BAPTIST CHURCH MT. ORAB www.bbcmtorab.com as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, or have had a stroke, those are burdens you are carrying that people with good health have no idea what you are going through. Then there is mental illness, depression, anxiety, and so forth that people struggle with their whole life. Well folks, those are some real burdens that people carry. Romans chapter 8 talks about those types of burdens. Let's begin in verse 18: "For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. For the creature" (that is us) "was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope". God, on purpose, allows us to suffer, have burdens, troubles, trials and testings that we might have hope in Him and not in our own being. Verses 21-23: "Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body". What a glorious day that will be! If you carry the burden of bad health, sickness, mental problems, or whatever the burden might be, verse 18 is for you! The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory waiting for you in heaven!

2016 Blevins Scholarship awarded

E V E N

Two Brown County graduates were recipients of the 2016 SPC Seth Blevins Memorial Scholarship. The recipients were each awarded a $3,000 scholarship from the committee. The scholarship committee has awarded nearly $20,000 in scholarships since its inception to Brown County graduates. Natalie Wagner, Eastern graduate and Bayley Johnson, Georgetown graduate were chosen this year. Natalie is attending the University of Tennessee and majoring in Pre-Medicine and Bayley is attending Wilmington College and majoring in Agriculture Education. Applicants are selected through a process which

includes meeting established criteria including: • Be a Brown County graduate, graduating in the academic year of the application. • Have an active service or veteran family member including: father, mother, sibling, grandparent, or great-grandparent. • Have a 2.5 cumulative grade point average or higher. • Plan to attend a college, university, or technical school in the upcoming school year. VOTE EARLY IN PERSON During the absentee voting period, you may visit your county board of elections to vote in person. Visit www.MyOhioVote.com or contact your county board of elections for your early voting location and hours. VOTE ON ELECTION DAY Your polling place will be open on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Don’t forget to bring proper identification. To find your assigned polling place, go to www.MyOhioVote.com. Visit www.MyOhioVote.com for all the information you need to vote in Ohio this November. Please look for an application for an absentee ballot in the mail from Jon Husted, Ohio Secre-

tary of State in the upcoming month. Under Ohio law, a voter who has requested an absentee ballot must cast a provisional ballot on Election Day if that voter appears in person to vote at the polling location on Election Day. If you received an absentee ballot application, completed, and submitted it to your board of elections, you will not be eligible to cast a regular ballot at the polls on Election Day. Instead, you will need to cast a provisional ballot. Your provisional ballot may be counted after the 10th day following the election pending a determination by your board of elections that your voted absentee ballot was not returned and counted prior to the closing of the polls. If you have any questions, please contact the Brown County Board of Elections at (937) 3783008 or brown@secretaryofstate.gov

Broncos, Rockets victorious in week one on the gridiron The 2016 high school football season officially got underway on Friday, Aug. 26, and week one would turn out well for the Western Brown Broncos and the Fayetteville-Perry Rockets who both came out victorious over non-league opponents in their season openers on their home fields. The Broncos galloped their way to a 48-22 victory over the visiting team from Hillsboro, and the Rockets

rallied in the second half after trailing 10-8 at halftime to pull out a 22-10 win. Western Brown's junior quarterback Seth Becker delivered three touchdown passes in the first half of play, one to junior wide receiver Carson Eyre and two to junior wide receiver Wyatt Fischer. With the Broncos leading by 20 in the first half of play on Friday, Aug. 26, lightning would cause the second half to be postponed until the morning of Aug. 27.

The Broncos were able to up their lead to 27-0 with 8:50 to go in the third quarter, as Becker capped off a drive with a 12-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Evan Luttrell, followed by a successful kick for the extra point from junior Lane Sexton. The third quarter would end with the Broncos leading 27-0, but the Indians refused to go down quietly as they were able to put 22 points on the board in the final period of play. Ripley’s Carlee Daulton hammers down a spike in the Lady Jays’ Aug. 30 match against Lynchburg.

League play begins for Lady Jays BY Wade Linville The Brown County Press The Ripley-UnionLewis-Huntington Lady Jays, under the leadership of their new head coach Kirsten Grant, are making significant strides towards improvement as the season rolls along, but are still in search of their first win. The Lady Jays played host to the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs for their first Southern Hills Athletic Conference match of the season, and despite a gutsy effort by Ripley's young varsity squad it was the Lady Mustangs coming away with the match win after coming out victorious in three straight sets. The Lady Mustangs rose to an early 3-0 lead in set one, clinging tight to a narrow lead until midway through the set when the Lady Jays began their comeback. The Lady Jays rallied behind the service of junior Andrea Preston, who tied the game at 12 apiece wit h an ace. The Lady Jays then capitalized off Lady Mustang errors to take a narrow lead. A kill by Ripley's only senior on the squad, Zoey Black, lifted the Lady Jays

to a 17-15 advantage, but it was a lead that would diminish late in the set as the Lady Mustangs heated up to take a 25-21 win. The Lady Mustangs went on to win set two 25-16, and capped off the match victory by winning set three 25-18. The Lad y Jays dropped to 0-4 with Tuesday's loss

to Lynchburg-Clay. Facing tough opponents in the early season, expect experience and hard work by this year's Lady Jays to eventually result in some victories. The Lady Jays were scheduled to face the Fayetteville-Perry Lady Rockets in a road game on Sept. 6.

BY Wade Linville The Brown County Press After claiming wins over Bethel-Tate and FelicityFranklin to up their overall record to 2-1 on the season, the Fayetteville-Perry Lady Rockets dropped to a 2-3 record with road losses to North Adams and Blanchester. The Lady Rockets had little trouble taking down the Felicity-Franklin Lady Cardinals in a match that lasted three sets on Aug. 25, claiming a 25-15 win in set one and returning to nab a 25-21 win in set two. The Lady Rockets capped off the match with a 25-16 win in set three. When venturing to North Adams High School on Aug. 30 to take on the skilled Lady Green Devils, the Lady Rockets suffered losses in three straight sets (25-12, 25-15, 25-10) to mark their second match loss of the season. The Lady Rockets were back on the road Aug. 31, making their way to Blanchester to suffer a loss in a match that lasted four sets (25-17, 22-25, 25-18, 2522). Junior Faith Stegbauer is among the Lady Rockets' attack leaders so far this season with 25 kills, as well as sophomore Hannah Wiederhold who has racked up 21 kills. Fayetteville junior Haley Moore has recorded 19 kills

The 2016 golf season started out on a positive note for the Eastern High School Warrior and Lady Warrior teams, as both Eastern teams were able to claim victories over Fairfield on Aug. 8 at Buttermilk Falls Golf Course. In the high school boys' match, the Warriors had little trouble claiming a 183205 victory over Fairfield. Leading the Warriors was Jordan Johnson with an individual score of 41, earning the medal for the day. Eastern senior Blake Rigdon finished with an individual score of 47 to aid in the Eastern win, while rounding out the Warriors' top three was Dylan Jimison with a score of 48. The Lady Warriors also cruised to a victory over Fairfield on Aug. 8 with a score of 210-230. Leading the Lady Warriors was Payton Dorsey with an individual score of 46. Eastern's Whitney Broughton finished with an individual score of 53, while rounding out the Lady Warriors' top three in

the match was Caitly Helton with an individual score of 55. Eastern's Cassidy Staggs finished with a score of 56, while teammate Mikayla Minnix ended the day with a score of 73. The Warriors returned to Buttermilk Falls on Aug. 22 to claim a narrow 195196 victory over the Ripley-Union-Lewis-Huntingt

on Blue Jays. Johnson was the medal winner for the day, finishing with a score of 39 on the par 35 course. Rigdon finished with a score of 49, and Jimison rounded out Eastern's top three with a score of 58. Leading the Ripley Blue Jays was senior Dylan Phillips with an individual score of 42.

Eastern volleyball squad claims victories over Paint Valley, Peebles BY Wade Linville The Brown County Press The Eastern High School varsity volleyball squad captured back-to-back victories after suffering three losses to start the 2016 fall season. The Lady Warriors took a trip to Paint Valley on Friday, Aug. 26 with hopes of capturing their first win of the season, and after four close sets it was Eastern coming away with a 3-1 victory. The Lady Warriors won the first set 25-19 and went on to win the second set 2517. Paint Valley won the third set 25-20 to leave Eastern with a 2-1 lead in the match, but the Lady Warriors were able to cap off the match with a 25-21 win in set four. Junior Haley Fannin led Eastern attackers in the match with eight kills, while senior teammate Kelsey Doss finished with six kills. Doss also served out three aces in the match, as did junior teammate Kaitlyn Duffey, but it was Fannin leading Eastern in aces with four. The Lady Warriors were on the road again Aug. 30, this time making their way to Peebles High School for their first Southern Hills Athletic Conference match of the season. It was the Lady Warriors pulling out another match victory by topping the Peebles Lady Indians in three of five sets. The Lady Warriors suffered a 20-25 loss in set one, but returned for set two to capture a narrow 25-21 victory to even the match at one apiece. The Lady Warriors then claimed a 25-22 win in set three to take a 2-1 lead in the match, but suffered a 2426 loss in set four. In the fifth set to decide the match, it was Eastern

The Western Brown Lady Broncos upped their overall record to 5-2 on the season with recent wins over Hillsboro, Zane Trace, and Goshen. The Lady Broncos' wins over Hillsboro and Zane Trace came during a trimatch held on Saturday, Aug. 27. The Lady Broncos did not lose a single set during their weekend tri-match, cruising to a 25-13 win in set one and a 25-16 win in set two to claim the match victory over Hillsboro.

The Lady Broncos also defeated Zane Trace in two close sets to win the match (25-19, 25-21). The Aug. 30 match at Goshen was the start of Southern Buckeye Athletic/Academic Conference American Division play for the Lady Broncos. It was the Goshen Warriors winning set one of the match, but the Lady Broncos rebounded to win the next three sets (25-17, 25-14, and 25-18). Junior Tessa Pinkerton is among the Lady Broncos' attack leaders this season with a total of 50 kills and has also been a

leader at the service line with 17 aces. Unfortunately for the visiting Indians, the Western Brown offense was able to rack up 21 points off three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to seal a 26-point victory. After the Indians were able to reach pay dirt for the first time in the game and complete the two-point conversion that followed to cut the Bronco lead to 27-8, it was a 28-yard touchdown pass from Becker to Fischer that helped expand Western Brown's lead to 34-8. The Indians responded with a 96-yard kick-off return for a touchdown, followed by another successful two-point conversion to slice the Bronco lead to 3416 with 9:07 to go in the fourth quarter. A 50-yard TD pass from Becker to Fischer was called back on a penalty to put the Broncos at the own 37 yard line with 22 yards to go for a first down. The Broncos were still able to score on the drive, cruising down the field behind a nine-yard run for first down by junior Zach Stacy, followed by a 25-yard touchdown pass from Becker to sophomore Josh Taylor that lifted the Broncos to a 4116 lead with Sexton once again making good on the kick for the point after. Trailing by 25 with under eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Indians refused to back down, scoring their third touchdown of the night to downsize the Western Brown lead to 41-22. The final touchdown of the night would come with 6:48 to go in the final frame, as Stacy muscled his way to pay dirt off a carry to expand the Bronco lead to 26, but the excitement didn't end there. A fourth down stop by the Bronco defense with only two yards to go for the Indians would bring Bronco fans to their feet and draw applause from the Western Brown coaching staff with four minutes left on the clock, a play that resulted in a turnover on downs to bring the Bronco offense back on the field to work from their own 30 yard line. The Bronco defense certainly came through with some big plays in their season opener victory, but the Western Brown coaching

staff felt the defensive play was a bit inconsistent when looking back at the bout against Hillsboro. “Overall, I thought we did well. We were a little inconsistent. We had an 18play drive and scored, and they had an 18-play drive and scored. Then, they had a one-play drive and scored, so I think that was a good lesson learned. Just because you played fairly well the last drive and worked really hard, you just can't rest on what happened. You have to play hard every down,” Western Brown head coach Don Sizer said of his defense's performance in the season opener. “ I was really pleased with how they finished.” As for the Bronco offense, there may have been some first-game jitters, but pulling through to put up 48 points was an excellent way to start the new season. “This was still the first game and we have a lot of new starters. You can practice all you want, but until you've played in the game...,” Sizer said of the Bronco offense. “Hillsboro had the 'beginning of the game jitters' and we had 'first-game, beginning of the game jitters' and I think we were eventually able to get our game legs under us. What was nice is that we have really made it a conscious effort to spread the ball around so they can't concentrate on one receiver, so on any given game an individual receiver can have a big game.” Becker totaled six touchdown passes in the week one win, while Fischer led Bronco receivers with 175 yards off nine catches and three touchdown receptions. Eyre hauled in two catches for 66 yards, and Stacy pulled down three catches for 32 yards. Jacob Daniel recorded 30 receiving yards off two catches. Stacy led Western Brown rushers with 96 yards off 11 carries and one touchdown. Becker took 10 carries for a total of 58 yards. Overall, the Broncos totaled 510 yards of offense while holding the Indian offense to 177 yards. The Indians recorded 170 yards on the ground and only seven yards passing. The Broncos totaled 349 passing yards and 161 rushing yards. After trailing 10-8 at half-

time, the Fayetteville-Perry Rockets chose not to go home when lightning caused their week one game against n on-league rival Clermont Northeastern to be postponed until the following day. Instead, the Fayetteville-Perry varsity players elected to stick around in the locker room and discuss what they needed to accomplish to claim a victory in their season opener. When play resumed on Aug. 27, it was Fayetteville-Perry rallying back to outscore the visiting Clermont Northeastern Rockets 14-0 in the second half to come away with a 22-10 victory. “What it came down to was leadership,” said Fayetteville-Perry head football coach Kevin Finch. “The seniors decided they wanted to win that game, and they responded big time.” According to Finch, it was the players who decided to have their meeting late on Aug. 26 after it was decided that the second half would be played the following day due to lightning, a perfect example of their dedication to the sport and their team. The offensive fire didn't ignite for Fayetteville-Perry until the second half with touchdowns coming form Chase Jester and Austin Brockman, but their defense would begin to pick up late in the first half when they were able to pin the CNE offense with an 18 yard loss to move them back to the Fayetteville 25 yard line with under a minute to go in the second quarter. From there, CNE attempted a long field goal that fell short to leave Fayetteville-Perry trailing by only two at halftime break. “(Our defensive turnaround) really started at the end of the first half, when they had the ball around our 10-yard line and our defense was able to get into their backfield. That was big for us,” said Finch, who went on to say senior Tay Call coming through with the big tackle. It was CNE drawing first blood in the season opener, settling for a 35yard field goal after being held to fourth down with 7:40 to go in the second quarter to take a 3-0 lead. But the Fayetteville-Perry special teams couldn't have found a better way to respond to the CNE field goal than to score a touchdown on the kick-off that followed, and that's just what they did. Fayetteville junior Chase Lockwood would cruise behind excellent blocking in an 80-yard touchdown run on the kickoff return, followed by a successful two-point conversion run by junior quarterback Luke Wiederhold to give Fayetteville-Perry an 8-3 lead. CNE topped off a drive with a one-yard run to pay dirt with 2:41 to go in the first half to take a 10-8 lead. It was Fayetteville-Perry dominating the second half as they returned to their home field on Aug. 27, their defense holding sturdy to stop the CNE running game and their offense able to put up two touchdowns after struggling to reach pay dirt the night before. The Farm Science Review is something that takes place every September in Ohio. It is one of the largest farm shows in the United States. If you are in agriculture and have never attended the Farm Science Review you need to put it on your “Bucket List”. The Farm Science Review covers several hundred acres. Most of the ground is demonstration plots that have field demonstrations going on during the show. Equipment in use for you to see in operation is only part of the show. There is so much to see that it is doubtful that you can see it all in one day. There are 80 acres of exhibits with everything from hand tools, to cattle handling equipment, to combines, to corn stoves and everything in between. The Farm Science Review takes place on September 20-22 in London, Ohio. London is located northwest of Washington Court House and between Columbus and Dayton near I-70. Tickets are available at any OSU Extension Office for $7 prior to September 20. Tickets are $10 at the gate which opens at 8 a.m. each day. The show

Seeding Your Lawn This year has been a real challenge for some homeowners. There has been no brown grass, and no weeks that the lawn did not need mowed. Maybe it needed mowed twice some weeks during the summer. The problems can consist of several things that grew that you did not want. Some things that grow well in wet areas may have taken over the lawn. In most cases this will not be there next year unless we are really wet again. However, I know I have had calls about “starting over” so here is a little information about seeding the lawn. Seeding can be done until October 1, depending on the timing of frosts and soil moisture, emergence and maturation of seedlings may not be as successful. Once the ground freezes, surface soil moisture is unavailable, and seedlings with a meager root system will desiccate and die. If seeding is not done by October 1, wait until next spring to perform dormant seeding. Starter fertilizer is essential for proper germination and development of seedling turfgrass, as seedling root systems have difficulty accessing nutrients, especially phosphorus, unless it is on the soil surface. Starter fertilizer NPK ratios should be 1-2-1 or 11-1. When possible, apply starter fertilizer again in 56 weeks. Do You Spray Your

Fruit Trees? Is it time to spray your fruit trees now? The answer is no, but the reason I ask is because now may be the perfect time to access the situation. You may have trees loaded with fruit, or maybe you HAD trees loaded with fruit. In either case, the reason I bring up a spray program now is so you can make decisions for next year based on what you are seeing or just seen happen. A good apple or pear crop be ruined quickly and it can happen nearly anytime during the growing season. If you value the fruit from these trees you might want to consider a spray program for future years. We have a bulletin from Ohio State University Extension that has a complete spray program for home owners. This summer was an eventful one for the Western Brown FFA. Within the first week of school being out, the officer team had already started planning next year’s events. The officer workshop lasted two days and at the end of those two days, the team had a completed program of activities, memorization of parliamentary procedure, and a better understanding of each other’s personalities. Following the officer workshop was the chapter’s first ever Farm Tour in which six sophomore members visited a number of agricultural-related businesses, historical sites and universities. First they visited the University of Illinois to tour their crop science department then headed southwest to the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri. While there, they also visited Pappy’s Smokehouse; home of the best ribs in America! In Astoria, Illinois, the students toured the Black Gold Cattle Ranch and Feedlot then drove north to stay a night in Davenport, Iowa. They also visited John Deere Harvester Works in Moline Illinois, Marquis Energy in Hennepin, Illinois, Fair Oaks Dairy in Indiana and finally the Ohio State University’s meat science lab. The chapter would like to thank the Brown County Pork Producers and the Western Brown FFA Alumni Chapter for their gracious sponsorship in helping to fund the trip! The chapter also took 21 members to FFA Camp Muskingum for a week of camping, canoeing, motorboating, team-building, hiking, and other fun activities. Camp really excited many of our younger members and served as a catalyst for motivation to get them further involved this coming school year.

Now the 2015-2016 school-year is upon us and coming up soon is the Brown County fair in which several Western Brown FFA students will participate in showing animals and other projects. Our very own Vice President, Tessa Pinkerton and FFA member Ryan Osborne will be Swine representatives at this year’s fair. There will be many opportunities to see all of the members throughout the week. Come join Western Brown, Eastern and Georgetown for a sausage egg and cheese sandwich or biscuits and

gravy breakfast in the Pork Producers booth Monday through Saturday, all county FFA chapters on Thursday afternoon and evening serving tenderloins, and the Western Brown FFA and Farm Bureau petting zoo Friday from 4:00-7:00. Also be sure to stop by the Neal Building to see our display of projects we are working on throughout the school-year. The chapter is looking forward to seeing you! For more information on the chapter, be sure to visit the chapter website at wbffa.theaet.com.

‘Real Outdoor Women’ fishing program offered On Thursday, September 15, the Soil and Water Conservation Districts of Brown, Adams and Highland counties are excited to present the fourth event in the “TriCounty Real Outdoor Women” series. The “Introduction to Fishing” program will take place at Woodland Altars Campground in Adams County. The evening starts at 5:30 p.m. with a light meal, followed by instruction, and we will end at approximately 8:00 p.m. The evening will provide the opportunity for participants to not-only try standard spin cast fishing, but we will also try fly fishing. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn a new skill from experienced ODNR-Division of Wildlife personnel. Pre-registration is required and a fee of $15.00 provides participants with a light meal and materials used during the event. You may download the brochure at our website, www.brownswcd.org or call the Brown County SWCD office at 937-378-4424, ext. 125 for details. Please register by the close of business on September 9th!

Many partners are working together to make the R.O.W. program a reality. Many thanks to the ODNR – Division of Wildlife and Pheasants/Quail Forever for their support.
