Judge closes book on coroner’s inquest BY Wayne Gates Brown County Coroner Dr. Judith Varnau may not investigate the death of Zachary Goldson any further and must pay $7500 in attorneys fees. She is also prohibited from changing her ruling on his mode manner and cause of death.

That was the ruling issued on Sept. 8 by Brown County Common Pleas Judge Scott Gusweiler. “We are reviewing and studying the ruling and considering further options, including a possible appeal,” said Varnau Attorney Thomas Eagle. Plaintiffs attorney John Phillips said, “I thought it

was a well thought out, well reasoned and appropriately drafted opinion regarding the coroner and the limits on her authority.” The ruling comes after a nearly two year battle with current and former members of the Brown County Sheriff’s Office over Goldson’s death. Goldson died in custody

on October of 2013. He was found hanging in his cell. Varnau ruled the death a homicide in December of 2013. After a lengthy investigation, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation concluded that Goldson’s death a suicide in December of 2014. A Brown County Grand

Jury did not indict anyone in connection with Goldson’s death. In January of 2015, five current and former members of the Brown County Sheriff’s Office filed a motion for a preliminary injunction to prevent Varnau from opening a coroner’s inquest into Goldson’s death.

That request was granted, along with a ruling by Gusweiler in April of 2015 that the coroner may not continue her investigation pending a final decision. A hearing on the matter was held in March of this year, with Gusweiler ruling on the case on Sept. 8. In the ruling, Gusweiler CONTINUED ON PAGE 7

September marked as ‘recovery month’ BY Wayne Gates September is known in the mental health and addiction treatment community as “recovery month”. “It’s a celebration of those in recovery to bring awareness to the citizens as a whole about the process. We often celebrate recoveries from physical conditions like cancer, but recovery in mental illness can get swept under the rug because no one wants to talk about it.

Recovery month brings awareness to the public that it takes hard work to recover from mental illness and we need to celebrate it,” said Brown County Board of Mental Health & Addiction Services Director Deanna Vietze. She said that a public celebration can also help those who are not affected by mental illness. “Seeing the faces of the people in recovery and seeing that they are the same

kind of people you see at work or the grocery store helps remind people that anyone can struggle with addiction or mental illness,” said Vietze. Part of the observance of recovery month will include the first 5K Recovery Run/Walk Color Explosion on Saturday, Sept. 17 in Georgetown. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m with the race beginning at 9 a.m. CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

12 year old raises $1,500 for Shop With a Cop On Aug. 28, Jessica Quittschreiber organized a very special Fishing Tournament which was held at TJ’s Fishing Lake in Mt. Orab. The tournament was a fundraiser for a very good cause. Jessica is 12 years old and in 7th grade at Mt. Orab Middle School. She spends much of her time sitting in her homemade lemonade stand, called “Jess’ Place” selling either lemonade or ice tea in the summer and hot chocolate and cider in the winter months. The fishing tournament helped Jessica raise funds which she will donate to the Mt. Orab Shop With a Cop Program. Her goal was to exceed last years goal of $1,200, which she did. She sets her stand up in front of the Kroger store and at several other events that go on throughout the year. Recently she set up at the Mt. Getting the recipe for Broccoli Slaw One of this summer’s celebrations was at our new neighbors across the creek. It was a great time and even better when I saw one of my favorite dishes. “Who made this,” I asked around. No one was certain until a lady under the pop-up tent said, “Oh you mean that dish; Doc made that.” Now, this being a new neighbor, I hardly knew them let alone their friends. But I listened intently over the crowd until I heard someone say, “Hey Doc.” It got my attention and I headed over his way. “Is it true, sir, that you made this dish, I pointed to the one next to us on the hay wagon—one my husband had hauled over for their food table. Having the food all displayed on the hay wagon under the shade tree reminded me of the family reunion I wrote about many stories ago. Hay wagons come in handy besides the benefits of stacking hay on them, they can be used to build on, or paint something on saving the back, or making a parade float, or used for a hayride, or a yard sale table, to name the many uses we have put our wagons in service for—and yes, of course, as I mentioned for the party table. “ Yes,” he answered, “I

SHERRY MITCHELL TAKE JOY, A FARMHOUSE JOURNAL did.” He went on to tell me his wife wasn’t feeling well so he made the hour trip by himself and made his carry in dish too. “What do you call this recipe,” I inquired. “Broccoli Slaw,” he replied. My eyes lit up. “Oh my goodness. I buy this all the time at The Home Place in Georgetown. You mean to tell me you have the recipe!” He nodded. “Is there anyway you could write me a “prescription” for it!” I joked. He laughed then recited from memory the ingredients. “By the way, may I ask, what kind of a doctor are you?” He turned from checking the hamburgers, being the grill master for the evening, “I’m a surgeon.” I nodded, “A surgeon of what kind?” Interrupted for a moment by someone else he then replied, “A back surgeon.” I smiled, “Really?” Sure enough he was. “By the way, “ he added as I headed back toward my lawn chair, “if you can’t remember the recipe (which he had recited on the spot) give me your cell number and I’ll send you

the recipe tomorrow. I was elated and hurried back over to do so. Just as he promised, the recipe came the next day. I gathered the ingredients and made it. It is so delicious. As the cooler weather usually brings new life to the cabbage and broccoli plants this time of year, it’s a marvelous way to use up vegetables in a new way. And you can easily make your own slaw dressing too, but to make it real easy, just follow Doc’s recipe and to make it even easier, I suggest buying a jar of bacon

bits. A little of this and a little of that, stir and eat. Enjoy! BROCCOLI SLAW: 1 Bag of slaw mix; 1 bunch of broccoli diced very small; 1 small diced red onion; ½ cup raisins; 1/2 lb. cooked, crumbled bacon; 1 jar Marzetti slaw dressing. Put all in a large bowl and mix. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Sherry is a regular contributor for The Press. To contact her sherryphillipsmitchell@yahoo. com

I’ve been involved in politics for the better part of a lifetime, and have spoken at a lot of public meetings over the years. There’s one question, I think, that I’ve heard more than any other: “If I want to be an informed citizen, which sources of information should I consult?” For many years, I had a set answer for this. Read one or more of the respected national news sources, I’d respond. I’m not sure how good that answer was at the time, but I know for certain it would be inadequate now. The internet and social media have upended our expectations of what it means to be well informed. Platforms and websites that take advantage of online and mobile connectivity are like a firehose, providing enormous quantities of information, opinion, news, statements, videos, images, analysis, charts, graphs — all of it instantly available. The question is, what impact does this have on the public dialogue, and on representative democracy? Clearly, these are powerful tools. As the rise of the Tea Party and the alarm over price increases for the EpiPen demonstrate, they can galvanize large, energetic groups of people who oppose a specific target. They make more information quickly available from more sources. They give citizens multiple ways to engage the attention and interest of policy makers — and give policy makers multiple ways to gauge public opinion and seek to

CMYK

OPINION understand the interests and needs of constituents. But if information has become more ubiquitous and powerful, so has misinformation. It spreads rapidly, passed along from user to user with no check. Posts tend to have no room for nuance; arguments can be explosive and arguers aggressive; drama and hysteria fuel polarization; special interests can’t help but take advantage of the context-free nature of social media. The key question is: Does the ubiquity of information really help citizens understand complex issues, weigh competing arguments, and reach discriminating judgments about politics? The answer, of course, is that it’s a mixed bag. Certainly, the information world we live in today is putting more stress on individual voters to make discriminating choices and on our representative democracy, which rests on institutions that were designed in the 18th and 19th centuries. Our political process has proved resilient over centuries, but social media pose a powerful challenge. They’ve brought great gifts and equally great risks, and we’d be prudent to be cautious. OHP asks: ‘Do you move over?’ The Ohio State Highway Patrol is asking motorists to help keep their fellow drivers and law enforcement officers safe by following Ohio’s Move Over law. A sergeant with the Chardon Post in Geauga County was struck by a vehicle last week during a traffic stop on U.S. Route 322 near Chardon, Ohio. Thankfully, his injuries were non-life threatening. But dash cam video and photos of the incident show the dangerous nature of these crashes. All drivers should move

over to an adjacent lane when approaching any vehicle with flashing or rotating lights parked on the roadside, according to Ohio law – specifically, ORC 4511.213. If moving over is not possible due to traffic or weather conditions, or because a second lane does not exist, motorists should slow down and proceed with caution. Statistics from 2011 to 2015 indicate that factors like road conditions, impairment and location play a role in move over crashes in Ohio. Alcohol, drugs or

a combination of both played a role in 28 percent of these crashes. Roads that are wet, snowy or icy accounted for 63 percent. And the vast majority of crashes – 79 percent – occurred on interstate, U.S. and state routes. The dangers of move over crashes exist beyond Ohio. According to the FBI, from 2005 to 2014, 97 law enforcement officers across the United States were struck and killed by vehicles while working. Troopers are serious about citing motorists who break this law; in fact, over

10,000 motorists received citations for violating the move over law from 2011 to 2015. It’s up to motorists to make the right decision to move over. “By moving over, motorists are helping to protect the lives of everyone who works on our roadways or uses them to travel,” said Lt. Robert Sellers, OSHP Public Affairs Commander. “It’s not just the law. It’s the right thing to do.” As always, the Patrol asks drivers to call #677 to report impaired drivers or drug activity.

rent family members. In 1830, a young couple, Dennis and Mary (Elliott) McCafferty arrived in America from Ireland. They purchased farm land in Brown County near Fayetteville in 1854. In 1894, one of the couple’s sons, Robert, and his wife Mary (McConn) McCafferty purchased a farm in Northern Brown County in Perry Township near Fayetteville. According to family member Marylyn (McCafferty) Clark, Robert’s second son, William McCafferty and his wife Mary (Cushing)

McCafferty inherited the farm in 1907 and completed the house and outbuildings in 1916. “My father, William Joseph McCafferty and my mother Winifred (Campbell) eventually owned and operated the farm” said family member Marylyn (McCafferty) Clark. Marylyn and her husband Ray Clark presently own the house and barns and they, along with other McCafferty siblings jointly own the land. Dan Fleisher, son of the late Jim and Wyncee (McCafferty) Fleisher, currently farms the land. During the Sept. 3 event,

more than 175 guests, family, neighbors and other friends gathered at the Grandview farm. Father Paul Keller, OP, celebrated Catholic Mass under a tent followed by a catered dinner. “There were photos of the five McCafferty siblings and their families were displayed throughout the house,” Clark said. “It was great fun and the evening ended with dancing in the barn and a Rozzi Company fireworks show.” The family hopes to keep the farm and celebrate again in 2116.

A TRUE FRIEND Everybody needs a friend. Years and years ago in England a newspaper ran a contest to see who could sent in the best definition of the word "friend". Thousands of responses came in but the winning one was this: "A friend is one who comes in when the whole world has gone out". We are spiritual, physical, and emotional human beings. We are also social beings so we need friends. You might have acquaintances that you call friends or people that you consider friends. But, if you have friends that are true, faithful, loyal, friends that stick with you through thick and thin, you are a very wealthy individual. Friends like that are more precious than gold. Turn with me to Proverbs 17:17: "A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity". You see, a true friend does not love you only sometimes, they love and care about you all the time. A true friend is like a brother that was born just for that period in your life of adversity. They are there for you when you are going through the deepest waters. Proverbs 18:24: "A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother". If you have a friend that is closer than your own blood relative, how valuable is that friend? The first part of that verse says that to have a friend you must first be friendly yourself! There is a ditty that goes, "I went out to find a friend but could not find one there; I went out to be a friend and friends were everywhere". Let me ask you this, "when was the last time you made a new friend in your own church?" Do you show yourself friendly? There are also some things to beware of in a friendship. Look at Proverbs 25:17: "Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbour's house; lest he be weary of thee, and so hate thee". Friendships should have limits and boundaries. You should not take advantage of a friend. Sometimes you can show yourself overly friendly, like being a pest!

REV. TED R. HOUSE BIBLE BAPTIST CHURCH MT. ORAB www.bbcmtorab.com Proverbs 27:14: "He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him". Don't wear a friendship out or abuse it. You might not want to call a friend at 4 or 5 in the morning just to chat! Now look at verse 17 of that same chapter: "Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend". A good friend should sharpen you, not dull you. He should make you a better person, not drag you down or damage you. A good friend should confront you when you need confronted! A good friend should be one to which you are accountable. He should admonish but not destroy. Now, there is someone who wants to be that kind of friend to you. Go with me to John 15:12-13: "This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends". Jesus did just that! He died for you and me. A friend that would give up his life for you is a friend indeed. These verses are talking about witnessing for Jesus. If you love Him, you will tell others about Him. He said in verse 14 & 15: "Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you". If you tell others about Jesus, He counts you as a friend and He is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. He is a friend that loves you enough that he died for you.

Judge closes book on coroner’s inquest CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 referred to the decision by the grand jury not to indict anyone in relation to Goldson’s death. “Whether the Coroner agrees or not with that decision, she has no legal authority to conduct an inquest at this late date,” wrote Gusweiler. “She completed her obligations under the law when she certified her findings (in December of 2013) and her authority ceased at that time. It is up to the Courts to assign criminal responsibility if it exists. The Grand Jury found that no such responsibility exists at this time. The Coroner cannot change the decision of the Grand Jury.” Referring to the hearings in the case, Gusweiler wrote, “The Coroner testified that she has not come across any new evidence to change her opinion as to the mode, manner and cause of death...She also testified that the subpoenas she issued demanded material that was not related to the mode, manner and cause of death. For example, a current copy of the Brown County Sheriff’s Office retention policy with revision history was one of the subpoenaed items.” Gusweiler continued, “She also subpoenaed phone records of the plaintiffs. The Court would comment that this type of fishing expedition unrelated to the mode, manner and cause of death certainly exceeds any power or duty of the coroner...There is no legal authority for the coroner to conduct an inquest just to prove she still had the right decision.” Gusweiler also issued a number of findings in the

case, which included; • “The Court finds that by subjecting deputies and corrections officers to this inquiry that are being implicated in the death of Zachary Goldson or are being accused of being complicit in his death.” • “The Court finds that there is nothing more harmful to a law enforcement officer than to have members of the public believe that they had violated the law and been involved in the death of an inmate. Once that allegation has been made and sent out to the public, harm to the officer’s reputation has been done.” • “The actions of the coroner in subpoenaing Sheriff’s office records unrelated to the death of Zachary Goldson demonstrates a complete lack of good faith on the part of the Coroner and a continuation of her public feud with the

Sheriff.” • “By continuing to conduct an inquest after already determined the mode, manner and cause of death, the Coroner exceeds her statutory authority and exacerbates the loss of the Goldson family needlessly.” After ruling that Varnau must pay $7500 in attorney’s fees, Gusweiler wrote, “The Court further finds that this is an award against Defendant Judith Varnau personally and not against the taxpayers of Brown County, Ohio. After being served with a temporary injunction, she chose to deliberately violate that injunction and she is personally responsible for the payment of those attorney’s fees. The ruling is appealable to the Ohio 12th District Court of Appeals.

Washington Township will be holding its 19th Autumn Bash this year on Sept. 16 and 17. The event started as an allvolunteer project that was trying to promote the Washington Township area and has grown into a larger event that works to help local charities. “It just seemed to evolve that way,” said Robin Brewer, Washington Township assistant administrator. This year the Sharp Shooters 4H group, the Community Helpers Association, the American Cancer Society, the Save the Animals Foundation, the Felicity Franklin Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, the Washington Township Firefighters Auxiliary and the Felicity Franklin Cross Country team will be at the event raising money. The charitable focus of the event also comes from the township trustees, who wanted to provide an event for the township that created community spirit, Brewer added. “We do try to focus on the charitable aspects,” she added. New this year is a second petting zoo, Mr. Cowpie Petting Zoo, in addition to the Clermont County Meat Goat Association's Petting Zoo. Also, the Moscow Monarchs vintage baseball team will be playing the Bluegrass Barons twice on Sept. 17, the first time

Moscow. Admission to the event is free and parking is $2. The Haunted Trail also costs $2. For more information on the event, including a schedule, go to washingtontwpclermont.org/a utumn-bash/, or call 513-5532072. Those interested can register for the 3rd Annual 5K Monster Dash/Walk by calling 513-876-0694. It costs $10 to pre-register and $15 to register the day of. their annual Big Beef Barbecue on Sunday, September 18th at 8:30 & 11:00 am. For Jeff and Sheri, gospel music is genetically programmed into their DNA. As members of acclaimed musical families—Jeff’s father is one of the Easter Brothers and Sheri’s mother is a member of The Lewis Family—they grew up surrounded by the sound of people praising God through their musical gifts. Also joining Jeff & Sheri on the road is their daughter, Morgan, who joins them with vocals to round out the kind of harmonies that only family can produce. The youngest addition to the Easter family is Maura Grace, Jeff and Sheri's 'twentieth anniversary gift to each other', who generally makes her way onstage doing anything to bring a smile. Jeff & Sheri have been nominated for numerous Dove Awards and won six. They’ve also received two career Grammy nominations, and Sheri has been named the Singing News Favorite Alto eleven times and the Singing News Female Vocalist four times. Pastor House and the congregation would like to invite you to come out and join them for this exciting day on Sunday, September 18th!

Why spend three days in celebration with music, food, and games? It’s been 60 years in the making! That’s when, back in 1956, First Baptist Church was officially organized. The church has met in several locations over the years – from a basement to a tent, from our old church building on West Main to the Western Brown

High School. Leadership has also changed – from the pioneering spirit of Lewis Rideout, Jr. to the tender teaching of Bob Hatcher. Timothy Cline challenged members to see needs beyond our borders. With our new Pastor, Jonathan Lawler, at the helm, we celebrate the goodness of God over the last 60 years. As a way to celebrate 60

years of God’s faithfulness through a weekend of activities Sept. 16-18, we will be having an outdoor (weatherpermitting) concert, featuring Jimmy Dooley. Dooley is a local recording artist and is formerly of Soul’d Out. The concert and refreshments are all free.

On Saturday afternoon, First Baptist Church will be hosting its annual Fall Festival, which will include inflatables, games, prizes, and a petting zoo, all of which are free. Two guests will win a Brown County Fair Pass as a door prize, so be sure to register when you come!

Sardinia Historical Society to meet

B R O A D S H E E T

The Sardinia Historical Society would like to invite the community to join us at Kibler's for our Grilling Out Fundraiser. This will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2016, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. There will be grilled sandwiches , condiments, chips, soft drinks, and assorted baked goods for your lunch. Make plans now to join us on Sept. 17 for lunch! Hope to see you at Kibler's !! All funds raised will be used by the society to preserve, maintain, protect our history as well as to educate the community of our rich history. There have been several inquiries concerning the tor-

nado and its damage to the cemetery fence. There was some damage to the fence, however, it should be able to be repaired. We are grateful that the damage was limited and there weren't any injuries! As the sign at the Fuel Mart says "we survived!" Thanks to the community and surrounding areas for their concern about our fence!!!

Finally, we will be finishing our 60th Anniversary Weekend with a special celebration service at 11am on Sunday. Guest worship leader William Lawler, from Violet Baptist Church in Pickerington, Ohio will be leading worship. A balloon release will take place at the end of the service, followed by a free lunch for all who attend. We are beyond grateful for the ways our Mt. Orab com-

munity has helped us during seasons of difficulty, and we hope to have an opportunity to bless you. We desire to continue our strong traditions of meeting needs and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ, and pray that you might consider joining us for this special weekend, as we celebrate 60 years of God’s faithfulness to our church family!

THE BROWN COUNTY PRESS

Broncos unbeaten at 6-0 Western Brown soccer squad on right track to claim first SBAAC American Division title BY Wade Linville The Brown County Press The Western Brown Broncos are off to the best start in school history for the varsity boys' soccer program, upping their overall record to 6-0 and their Southern Buckeye Athletic/Academic Conference American Division record to 5-0 with recent wins over New Richmond and Amelia. Five of the six Bronco victories to start the season have been on the road, as they've shown significant improvement this season under the leadership of head coach Bobby Kuntz. “We are really excited with how well the boys have started the season,” said first-year Western Brown coach Bobby Kuntz. “I would say that we definitely

knew we were capable of this kind of start. With all the work the boys had put in during the offseason and preseason, we knew we had the makings of something special. What it was going to come down to, which is something we communicated to the boys, was are we going to be able to play our style of soccer regardless of the opponent and were we going to seize our moments when they presented themselves. So far, the answers to both of those questions have been yes which is the biggest reason for the 6-0 start. Staying true to what got us here is going to be the key for having a successful end to the season.” Coming off a narrow 1-0 win over New Richmond in which Chase Easterling

scored the game-winning goal, the Broncos were able to escape Amelia High School with a 3-0 victory on Sept. 6. The Broncos blanked the Goshen Warriors 3-0 in their first league match of the season on Aug. 23, and they had no trouble at all cruising to a 6-0 win at Clinton Massie to open the season on Aug. 22. Junior Austin Schweitzer is among the Broncos’ scoring leaders so far this season with four goals, while sophomore forward Chase Easterling has managed three goals. Also contributing to the Broncos’ success this season have been sophomore goalkeeper Sam Linkous, senior midfielder Gabe O’Hara, sophomore defender Wesley O’Hara, junior defender Zach Knight,

senior defender Aaron Partin, sophomore midfielder Blake Hurt, junior midfielder Colston Roades, junior midfielder/forward Dillan Scarpinski, senior midfielder Jake Zinkhen, sophomore defender Joey Kinder, junior defender Jordan Hamblin, sophomore defender Noah Hiler, senior defender/goalkeeper Tanner Shasteen, sophomore midfielder Afton Dixon, sophomore midfielder Austin Coffey, and sophomore defender Austin Kirk. “The New Richmond win was an extremely important way to cap off the second week of the season,” said Kuntz. “Playing last seasons first and second place finishers in the league that week, we needed good results and we got them. I don't think there is anything more we could ask from the boys right now.”

Rigdon wins Western Lady Warriors volley Brown's Jim Neu Invite their way to 3-1 in SHAC Eastern HS girls finish runner-up of seven teams BY Wade Linville The Brown County Press Runners battled 90-degree temperatures at this year's Jim Neu Cross Country Invite held Tuesday, Sept. 6 at Western Brown High School. Due to the heat and humidity, the course was cut to two-miles from the typical 5K for high school runners. In the high school girls race, it was Eastern freshman Camryn Pickerill placing second overall with a time of 12:50.15 to lead the Lady Warriors to a runnerup finish on a field of tough

opponents. The New Richmond Lady Lions topped all teams with a score of 57, 12 points ahead of the runnerup team from Eastern. Finishing third overall of 66 runners was Georgetown freshman Katlin Colwell with a time of 13:35.02. Georgetown freshman Allyson McHenry ran for an eighth place finish with a time of 14:51.18, while Eastern's Jaunita Frost was ninth to cross the finish line with a time of 14:52.12. Rockets, Broncos suffer first losses BY Wade Linville The Brown County Press Week two on the gridiron didn’t turn out well for the Western Brown Broncos and the Fayetteville-Perry Rockets, as both teams suffered their first losses of the season to drop to 1-1 overall records. Coming off a win over the Hillsboro Indians to start their 2016 campaign on Aug. 26, the Western Brown Broncos suffered their first defeat of the season with a 28-26 loss to Little Miami while on the road for week two, Sept. 2.

In what what a close bout throughout, the Broncos trailed 14-7 in the third quarter before Zach Stacy topped off a drive with a short touchdown run to help tie the game at 14 apiece with 8:48 to go in the third period. The Broncos totaled 330 yards of total offense with 242 passing yards and 88 rushing yards. All rushing yards for Western Brown came from Stacy, who took 17 carries and scored three touchdowns.

Western Brown’s Tessa Pinkerton comes through with a kill during the Lady Broncos’ Sept. 6 win over Batavia.

Creature Feature Puppy basics Puppies are extremely impressionable. How you train and socialize your new pet will have dramatic and long lasting effects. You can make your puppy a better pet and prevent behavior problems by following these guidelines: Housebreaking Establish a routine. Keep the pup's meals regularly scheduled to encourage more predictable elimination patterns. Take your pup out every two hours during the day and as needed at night. Select ONE toilet area. Take your pup to the toilet area five minutes after feeding, awakening, riding in a car, greeting new people, or chewing on toys. Recognize indicators such as circling or sniffing around. When your pup relieves himself in the appropriate spot, immediately reward him with a food treat and verbal praise. If your puppy is sneaky about having accidents, try keeping his leash on and attach the other end to your belt. Having your puppy with you all the time will help you catch him in the act every time, which is crucial. Scolding or punishing after the fact does nothing to help the dog understand the right way to do things. Whenever you see an accident about to happen, immediately get your dog’s attention and rush him outside to communicate the proper routine. Socialization Introduce your pup to a variety of positive experiences to get him used to new people, animals, and environments. Visit three new places a week and introduce him to five new people at each place. Take your pup in regular car rides--use a carrier to insure safer driving. Socialize your puppy to certain activities as well. Brush your pup daily. At the same time, handle your pups feet and ears and open his mouth for inspection and teeth-brushing, and massage him all over. If the pup fusses, be calm but firm and don’t give in to the protest, or he’ll learn that squirming, barking, or nipping gets him what he wants. Gradually build the amount of time your dog can put up with this sort of handling, keeping it positive, where he receives a reward during or after the experience. When he is quiet, talk to him in a soft, pleasant voice. Gradually acquaint him to very loud noises, like that of a vacuum cleaner--turn it on and off from a distance. With all socialization, taking a gradual approach will help ensure your puppy has a good experience. Prevent Bad Habits Make sure your puppy is getting enough exercise. Pent-up energy is one of the leading causes of obnoxious behavior. A good rule of thumb is at least 5 minutes of vigorous exercise per month of age. So a 3 month old puppy should get at least 15 minutes, a 4 month old should get at least 20. Dogs over a year should get at least 30 minutes, but most could

DAN MEAKIN CREATURE FEATURE

use a lot more than that! A tired dog is a happy dog, and it helps keep them healthy too! Provide appropriate objects for chewing (NYLABONE products) and praise the puppy for chewing on these objects. It is best to rotate toys to prevent boredom. Gently punish appropriate chewing (clap hands, shout) while directing the puppy to appropriate objects. Put your pup in a crate when you are unable to supervise. Don't allow aggressive or unruly behavior: Mouthing hands, tug-of-war, jumping up, growling, guarding food, and nipping. Competition between dog and owner should never be developed, even when it is playful. Make it clear that playtime and attention ends abruptly when the puppy gets too rough. Don't allow jumping up. Don’t allow other people to allow jumping up. Even if some people are ok with it, inconsistent training will confuse the dog. Never pet or talk sweetly to a dog that has only two feet on the ground. Turn away and ignore him! Kneeing, hitting the dog under the chin, and squeezing the dog’s paws may actually lead to increased jumping. If turning around and ignoring the dog only results in paw prints on your back, practice the sit command frequently, on-leash, in situations where the dog is most likely to jump - like at the front door as people come in. Once your dog is sitting, release the command and shower your dog with praise and attention - if this excitement

prompts the dog to jump again, immediately say Off! as you pull your dog off, and then Sit! This exercise will condition your dog to sit politely for attention, and eventually, (if practiced consistently) you won’t even have to ask. Make sure everyone who deals with the dog knows all the rules and enforces them the same way, or the dog will be confused. Nothing is Free Food rewards can help dogs learn new commands faster, but the "nothing is free" technique helps you establish leadership once those commands and behaviors are understood. The concept is to teach your dog that "nothing in life is free." Your pup must obey a command before he or she gets anything he or she likes. No food rewards are used. The reward is what the dog wants in the particular situation, be it love, praise, pats, going out, etc. Don't allow your pup to be demanding in obnoxious ways. The only way your dog should get what he or she wants is by behaving. Additional Training Additional training can begin as young as 8 weeks of age. Your dog should be able to: 1. Walk calmly on a leash. 2. Focus on you to build attentiveness. 3. Sit, lay down, and stay until released. 4. Leave-it and ignore objects that are off-limits. 5. Take and drop objects when asked. 6. Come when called. Training the right way helps foster the bond between us and our dogs, building a safe, respectful relationship and a healthy, stable pack. Adding additional seed of milkweed species could be added to the pollinator mixes to make the areas more attractive to monarchs. Pollinator species are experiencing population declines across the United States. In response to this decline, the Ohio Division of Wildlife and other partners have created the Ohio Pollinator Habitat Initiative (OPHI) to educate the public and help create beneficial habitat for pollinators. Since most homeowners can’t devote even an acre to a pollinator habitat, what are their options? Any size pollinator habitat is better than none! Remember that a flower-less landscape is a pollinator desert. If you are fearful to have a patch of common milkweed (Ascle-

pias syriaca), you might plant Butterfly-Weed (Asclepias tuberosa), Sullivant’s Milkweed (Asclepias sullivantii), or Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata). It’s time to mark your calendars for the September 22, 2016 garden seminar at the Mt. Orab campus of Southern State Community College. Chris McCullough, President of the Cincinnati Chapter of Wild Ones, will present the program, Getting Started: A Beginner’s Guide to Natural Landscaping in Your Own Backyard. Remember that all seminars are free and open to the public. We will meet in room 107 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. So if you are wondering where and how to start a pollinator habitat or add more native plants to your landscape – plan to attend! Plan to stop by our booth at the Brown County Fair!

Have ever considered planting pollinator habitats where you would normally mow? Creating pollinator habitats in ditches, waterways, and other areas not in crop production on farm ground can help free up your time and help pollinators too. According to a recent Successful Farming article. “All farmers have places they mow. These areas are the perfect environment for warm-season grasses and forbs.” While there’s an up-front investment, these habitats need minimum upkeep once they are established. Whether it’s 1 acre or 10 acres, it will help to increase the population of

beneficials, such as honeybees, wild bees, or other insect pollinators, plus, it will reduce time spent mowing. It’s not just honeybees that will benefit from pollinator habitat-monarchs will too. Monarch caterpillars only eat milkweed, without it, they can’t survive. Not only that, monarch butterflies also rely on milkweed for laying their eggs, according to Bob Hartzler, Iowa State University Extension weed specialist. I can remember my Dad working hard to eradicate Milkweed from our cattle pastures. As I tend to my Milkweed patch I am sure that my Dad is looking down at me and shaking his head in disbelief. We just didn’t realize what the impact of wide spread use of glyphosate and Roundup Ready crops would have. Pollinator mixes are available through the NRCS contain forb, legume, and grass seed to

One thing's for sure. Our Clermont and Brown County readers love to grow tomatoes. Me included! But just what do you do with that abundant tomato harvest? How about making a batch of oven roasted tomatoes to use all winter? OVEN ROASTED TOMATOES 3 pounds large tomatoes, cored and sliced 3/4" thick 2 large garlic cloves, peeled and smashed 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano or 2" sprig fresh, leaves removed from stem Salt and pepper to taste 3/4 cup olive oil Preheat oven to 425. Line rimmed baking sheet with foil. Put tomatoes in single layer with larger slices around edge and smaller slices in center. Put smashed garlic on top. Sprinkle with oregano, salt and pepper. Drizzle all over with oil. Roast for 30 minutes, rotating pan halfway through. Remove pan from oven. Turn temperature down to 300 degrees. To help oven cool down, prop door open with wooden spoon. Turn tomatoes over and put back in oven. Roast until spotty brown, skins are blistered and tomatoes have collapsed to 1/4" to 1/2" thick. This takes about 1 hour or so.

The Brown County Tea Party announces their next regular meeting will be Saturday, September 17, 2016 at 4:00 PM at the Mt. Orab Public Library, located at 613 South High Street in Mt. Orab. The Tea Party stands for limited government, fiscal responsibility, and free enterprise. Please join us as we endeavor to educate and inform concerned citizens of events occurring in our County, State, and Nation. Everyone is welcome. Please visit our booth at the Brown County Fair.

Remove and cool. Discard garlic and place tomatoes in containers. Refrigerate up to 4 days or freeze for up to 2 months. COUNTRY KITCHEN WISDOM • Delicious as a topping for crostini with a sprinkling of Parmesan. • Good for topping sandwiches and pizza. ABCAP grant to pay for affordable housing

Landen Lucas, Logan Scott and Bayley Johnson

Georgetown FFA members honored At the 2016 Ohio FFA State Convention, three Georgetown FFA members earned their state degree. Landen Lucas, Logan Scott, and Bayley Johnson earned their FFA state degree on May 6th, 2016. A state degree is the second highest degree a FFA member can receive. In order to receive a state degree a FFA member must be at least a junior in high

school, acquire thirty-five hours of community service, participate in at least five FFA activities above the chapter level, and earn three thousand dollars through their Supervised Agriculture Experience. The Georgetown FFA Chapter is extremely proud of these three members for receiving this high honor and are expecting to see more in the future.

A group of local partners won critical financing to rehabilitate fifty-eight apartments across three properties in Brown County, Ohio. The project, known as ABCAP Housing Renovations, will include the renovation of Brown County Apartments and Victoria Manor Apartments in Georgetown and Lafayette Place Apartments in Fayetteville. The project is being led by partners Adams and Brown Counties Economic Opportunities, Inc. (ABCAP) and The Model Group (TMG). The partners competed for and received an award of tax credit financing from the Ohio Housing Finance Agency. These funds will help to leverage several other key funding sources totaling to the $6.75M project budget. The project will now move towards a construction start in summer 2017, with a goal to be complete and ready by

winter of 2018. This housing is critical to the community, as it will provide affordable apartments to those whom are at the greatest risk of living in substandard housing, suffering the burden of unaffordable rent, or becoming homeless. Some of the units will provide housing for individuals ages 62 and over. The remaining units will be reserved for individuals who are chronically mentally ill.

Old Bethel Church homecoming The Old Bethel Church Historical Society is planning homecoming services at the old church on Sunday Sept.18, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. The church is located on the East Fork State Park property north of Bantam, OH. This old building is listed on the National Register of Historical Sites.

Subsidy will be provided to ensure that all individuals pay only 30% of their incomes towards rent and utilities. ABCAP and Model Group will be holding a meeting open to the public at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 8, 2016 for community members who want to learn more about the project

and to gather feedback regarding what they think would be helpful in these apartment communities. The meeting will be held at ABCAP headquarters located at 406 W Plum Street, Georgetown, Ohio 45121. Please contact Shelly Spiller, Director of Housing for ABCAP, with any questions regarding this meeting.

S.R. 32 emergency construction underway Construction is underway on an emergency repair project on state Route 32 in Brown County. Following bouts of heavy storms and flash flooding that have hit the area in recent weeks, a culvert that is located under S.R. 32 at the 0.1-mile marker, immediately east of the Brown-Clermont County line, has become severely compromised. Crews from the John R.

Jurgensen Company began working on the project on Sept. 6. During construction. the route will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Throughout the project, bi-directional traffic will be maintained in either the west or the eastbound lanes, with traffic diverted by way of a crossover. The project is expected to be complete in mid-November.
