BY Faye Mahaffey This past week-end the OSUE Master Gardener Volunteer Conference was hosted by the Hamilton County Master Gardener Volunteers. We have a chance to visit with other Master Gardeners from around the state, tour gardens, and listen to some spectacular speakers, and maybe come home with some new plants or a shiny set of pruners! Each year Pam Bennett, State Master Gardener Volunteer Coordinator, shares important data about Ohio Master Gardener Volunteers. 167,100 volunteer hours were contributed by Master Gardener Volunteers to Ohio State University Extension and their communities in 2017. The value of those services totaled $4.03 Million dollars (using the current national estimated dollar value of volunteer time of $24.14 per hour, from Independent Sector). 46,178 hours of advanced training were reported in 2017. There were 394 new Master Gardener Volunteers trained in 2017. 63,466 pounds of donated fresh produce by MGVs helped with food insecurity and food deserts. How many active Master Gardener Volunteers are there

in Ohio? 3,033 MGVs were certified for 2017. Let’s talk a moment about OSUE Brown County Master Gardener Volunteers and some of their projects. We work each month at the Ohio Veterans Home in Georgetown, helping Veteran gardeners with their raised bed gardens. Fayetteville Kindergarteners are enjoying a new Pollinator Garden this school year and will learn about bees and seeds from the MGVs. The Monarch Waystation flower bed at the OSUE office in Georgetown has been very active with Monarch caterpillars as well as other beneficial pollinators. We enjoyed talking with everyone who stopped by our booth at the fair to learn more about Butterflies and becoming a Master Gardener Volunteer. One other fun project we do each year is a Skillathon at the fair that engages all ages, including adults! We are hosting the Garden Seminar Series again this year and hope that you will mark your calendar for the Thursday, October 18 seminar, Planting for Pollinators, starting at 7:00 p.m. in Room 208 at the Mt. Orab Campus of Southern State Community College. Emily Archibald, Ohio Department of Natural Re-

sources, will be the presenter. Remember that all seminars are free and open to the public. The total hours reported by the 17 certified OSUE Brown County Master Gardener Volunteers in 2017 included:1,373.5 Volunteer hours, 420 Advanced training hours, and 12, 242 miles driven. This year at the State Conference I was honored to be chosen as Outstanding Master Gardener Volunteer Coordinator for 2018. Being a Master Gardener Volunteer has brought such joy to my life and I hope to continue working with the great group of MGVs in Brown County for many years to come! The leaves are falling, the mums are blooming, the tomatoes are beginning to taste like “the end of the season”. The first frost is right around the corner! An additional note from David Dugan, OSU Extension Educator: Congratulations to Faye Mahaffey who was recently named Ohio Master Gardener Volunteer Coordinator of the Year for 2018. Faye is the Volunteer Coordinator for Brown County. This was a much deserved award for an outstanding volunteer, gardener and person.

ABCAP staff members honored Joan Waldbillig and Curry Ingle of the ABCAP Housing Department received the Agency Award of Merit from the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) on July 27, 2018 for bringing food to the residents at Lafayette Place Apartments. The residents at Lafayette Place Apartments live on a fixed income. Worried that residents were not getting an adequate food supply, Waldbillig reached out to Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio to see if the site would be eligible to sponsor a mobile food pantry. Unfortunately the community room was not set up to adequately handle the traffic flow. Not to be discouraged, the Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio and Waldbillig came to an agreement that would
