COMMUNION

The Communion is not a feast for the body; it is a feast for the soul and spirit. Go with me to I Corinthians 11. Beginning in verse 23 Paul said: “For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.” When this Communion was given originally to the disciples in Matthew 26 it was the day of the Jewish Passover. In the account in Luke 22:15 Jesus told His disciples: “...With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer.” But before that Passover was over Jesus had converted the Old Testament Passover into the New Testament Communion service. I repeat, it started out as the Passover, but ended with the Communion. In Matthew 26:26 it says: “And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.” Now He was not talking about that which represented the Passover lamb as in Egypt in the Old Testament. Now He was talking about the Lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the World, He Himself; He said my body. Verses 27-28: “And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” The Old Testament Passover ended right there and the New Testament Communion began right there! Communion is an ordinance of the New Testament. The church has only 2 ordinances. One is Baptism and the other is

Communion. You should not take Communion until you have been baptized! It will cause you problems if you do. You must be saved before you are baptized and baptized before you take Communion! Neither Baptism nor Communion will get you into heaven! You must be saved in order to get into Heaven. Baptism can not wash away your sins and neither can it keep you clean. It has nothing to do with any of that. It has to do with 2 things. Remembering Jesus’ death (past) and (future) when He comes again. Jesus said to do this; He did not say if you want to. So, to not do so would be disobedience. This is not an opinion thing. It is God’s word! Do is like the word go. Those 2 words demand action. Now, Communion is a time to take inventory of yourself, NOT of your sins. It is you yourself you are to examine. I Corinthians 11:28 says: “But let a man examine himself...” It does not say to examine your sins. You are to examine your soul. If you are not right wth God, if you are not saved, do not take Communion. If you take it unworthily, verse 27 warns you that you shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. Furthermore, verses 29-30 states: “For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.” That sleep is talking about death, not resting in bed! Webster’s dictionary definition of the word damnation is: condemnation to eternal punishment as a consequence of sin. Again, it is your soul you must examine! Verses 31-32: “For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.”
