October gardening tasks BY Faye Mahaffey Sadly, I headed out to the garden to pick the last of the tomatoes, peppers, and cut some zinnias for a vase yesterday since we were under a frost advisory. I brought in the rosemary, eucalyptus, and catnip (for Miss Kitty). Our roof was covered with frost yesterday morning, but so far nothing looks like it was affected. We all know the killing frost is not far away and some gardeners will be thankful to have a bit of a break. I pulled some weeds and picked up some buckeyes. The Black walnuts are still falling and hitting the roof of the house and scaring poor Miss Kitty. She has been sleeping downstairs in the basement to avoid the loud thumps! The pumpkins have been added to my flower beds and it is time to start putting our gardens to bed for the winter. October’s tasks for the gardens include: 1. Have your lawn and garden soil tested. You can contact the OSUE Brown County office for more information at 937-378-6716 2. Rake up fallen leaves and add them to your compost heap. 3. Mulch areas intended for early spring planting. 4. Plant trees and shrubs and water deeply before

ground freezes. 5. After leaf fall, take hardwood cuttings. 6. Reseed the lawn until the soil cools. 7. Mark late-to-emerge perennials. 8. Rake up or pull out annuals once they’re killed by frost. 9. Clean up your perennial beds. 10. Continue planting hardy spring-flowering bulbs. 11. Direct-seed lettuce, endive, and escarole. 12. Take cuttings of your favorite herbs to grow indoors over winter. 13. Dig, sever, and replant rooted suckers of raspberries. 14. Remove stakes and other garden equipment from the vegetable garden. 15. After a killing frost, clean up the vegetable garden. Squash vine borers winter over in plant debris. 16. Check houseplants for insect pests that may hitch a ride inside at summer’s end. 17. Plant amaryllis bulbs for holiday bloom. 18. Dig and store summer-flowering tender bulbs after first frost. 19. Make a to-do list for next year’s garden while you still remember what happened this year!!!!! Remember tidying up the garden will ensure the

October brings another list of things to do in the garden.

healthy and vigorous development of next year’s flowers, foods, lawns, and ornamental plants. Also, don’t forget to protect those young trees from rutting deer. If the trunk is 1 to 4 inches in diameter, you can use a piece of 4-inch plastic drain tile. Split/cut it down one side and slide it on the tree. Be sure to take it off the first of March. We have put snow fence around our Bald Cypress tree again this year since it was planted directly beside the well-traveled deer path across our property. I know, what

were we thinking? We chose the planting site because of the view, not thinking of the deer. I found some “confused” Monarch caterpillars yesterday before the rain. They were munching on the leaves of Poison Hemlock! We transferred them to some milkweed plants and wondered if they will feel any ill effects. Were you one of the gardeners that complained about the hot and humid weather? It’s time to get out your hat and jackets now!

NAP Deadlines Crop Certification for 2019 crops Report due dates The Farm Service Agency (FSA) reminds producers who are interested in the 2019 Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP), of the need to apply for coverage by the following crop deadline dates. November 20, 2018 is the deadline for 2019 NAP coverage on apples, asparagus, blueberries, caneberries, cherries, chestnuts, forage for hay and pasture, grapes, nectarines, peaches, pears, plums, strawberries, honey, maple sap and hops. NOTE: Hops is a perennial crop and the application deadline moved from spring to fall for coverage. March 15, 2019 is the deadline for 2019 NAP coverage on forage sorghum, oats, potatoes, Soybeans, Sunflowers and all spring planted specialty crops grown for food. The program offers coverage at 55 percent of the average market price for crop losses that exceed 50 percent of expected production. Eligible producers

can apply for 2019 NAP coverage at their local FSA Office using form CCC471, Application for Coverage. The service fee for basic NAP coverage is the lesser of $250 per crop or $750 per producer per administrative county, not to exceed a total of $1,875 for a producer with farming interest in multiple counties. To help producers learn more about the NAP program and how it can help them, USDA, offers an online Web tool at www.fsa.usda.gov/nap. The webtool allows producers to determine whether their crops are eligible for coverage and gives producers an opportunity to explore a variety of options and levels to determine the best protection level for their operation. For more information on NAP coverage or obtain coverage, please contact the Brown County Farm Service Agency at (937) 378-6173 or the Clermont County Farm Service Agency at (513) 732-2181.

In order to comply with Farm Service Agency program eligibility requirements, all producers are encouraged to visit the Farm Service Agency to file an accurate crop certification report by the applicable deadline. The following acreage reporting dates are applicable for Brown and Clermont Counties: Nov. 15, 2018 --- Report Perennial Forage Crops. Dec. 15, 2018 --- Fall Barley, Fall Wheat, and all other Fall-Seeded Small Grains. The following exceptions apply to the above acreage reporting dates: If the crop has not been planted by the above acreage reporting date, then the acreage must be reported no later than 15 calendar days after planting is com-

pleted. If a producer acquires additional acreage after the above acreage reporting date, then the acreage must be reported no later than 30 calendars days after purchase or acquiring the lease. Appropriate documentation must be provided to the county office. Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) policy holders should note that the acreage reporting date for NAP covered crops is the earlier of the dates listed above or 15 calendar days before grazing or harvesting of the crop begins. For questions regarding crop certification contact the Brown County FSA office at 937-378-6173 or the Clermont County FSA office at 513-732-2181.

Global warming presentation Global warming is a subject that causes people to ask a lot of questions. When scientists inform the public that humans are causing global temperatures to rise, one of the first set of questions is: Hasn’t global temperature always fluctuated? After all, the glacial grooves at Kelley’s Island prove that Ohio was once covered with ice. Something caused that global cooling, and when the ice age ended, something caused massive global warming – and none of it was humans. So why the concern about global warming now? Isn’t it likely that the warming is natural and not caused by humans at all? “These are all great questions, and the public deserves answers to them,” said Thomas W. Blaine, Associate Extension Professor with Ohio State, who will be speaking in Georgetown on November 13. “The way that I structure my presentation brings a lot of satisfaction to audience members who do not believe these kinds of questions have been adequately answered or explained by the scientific community. I present a history of earth’s climate, explaining why temperatures have fluctuated so much in the past. We go over the era of the dinosaurs, the ice ages, you name it, we cover it. It turns out that audiences just love learning about Earth’s natural history – it’s a lot of fun.” Another set of questions

goes like this, “Hasn’t Earth been much warmer than it is now for most of its history? If that is true (and it is), then why worry about a few degrees warming in the next 50-100 years?” “Again, the fact that the Earth is currently in an icehouse as JAMES MORRIS opposed to OSU its normal EXTENSION condition EDUCATOR of a hothouse, is something that I carefully explain in my presentation. How these changes came and went is something on which I focus as well. It answers a lot of questions people have. This is important, not only because it clears up a lot of the questions about what is at stake now, but it also gets people interested in science. How many potential budding young scientists do we have in Brown County? You just never know what kind of experience is going to direct someone to go to Ohio State or another university and come out with a PhD n Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or another great field. Basically, I think that any program that increases scientific literacy among the public is a good thing. That’s why I went into Extension.” Dr. Blaine will be presenting from 6:30pm to 7:30pm in Rhonemus Hall at the Brown County Fairgrounds on November 13th. For more information contact the Brown County Extension Office at 937-378-6716 or email morris.1677@osu.edu .

Get your flu shot early Teen Driver

AFFILIATE MEMBER

With the approach of flu season, the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) is recommending all Ohioans 6 months and older get a flu shot as soon as possible. The Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC) is urging vaccination by the end of October. Flu activity traditionally begins to increase in October and can last as late as May, with cases typically peaking between December and February. CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the best protection against seasonal flu viruses. Flu vaccines have been updated this year to better match circulating flu viruses. “Flu vaccination can help keep you from getting

sick, missing work or school, and prevent flu-related hospitalization and death,” said Sietske de Fijter, State Epidemiologist and Chief, Bureau of Infectious Diseases. “Getting your flu shot helps protect all, including older adults, very young children, pregnant women, and people with certain long-term health conditions who are more vulnerable to serious flu complications.” Symptoms of influenza can include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. “If you are sick with the flu, stay home from work or school to prevent spreading it to others,” said de Fijter. Although most people

fully recover from the flu, some experience severe illness like pneumonia and respiratory failure, and the flu can sometimes be fatal. People who think that they may have the flu and are pregnant, have an underlying medical condition, or who are extremely ill should contact their healthcare provider immediately. Flu vaccines are offered by many doctor’s offices, clinics, health departments, pharmacies and college health centers, as well as by many employers and some schools. While vaccination provides the greatest protection against the flu, other effective ways to avoid getting or spreading it include: washing hands frequently or using alcohol-based hand sanitizer;

Safety Week National Teen Driver Safety Week is October 21-27, and Ohio Department of Insurance Director Jillian Froment and John Born, Director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS), which includes the Ohio State Highway Patrol are encouraging all parents not to hand over the keys until their teens know the rules of the road. “Education and increased awareness can help protect teens from the severe dangers and consequences of distracted driving,” Ohio Department of Insurance Director Jillian Froment said. “I urge parents to have conversations with their teen drivers to establish rules that will help keep them and those around them safe while on the road.” Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the United States - ahead of all other types of injury, disease, and violence. In Ohio, teen drivers were involved in 135,882 traffic crashes from 2015 to 2017. An action on the part of the teen driver contributed to 15 percent of these crashes. Crashes where teen drivers were at fault resulted in 285 fatalities and 41,917 injuries. Parents play an important role in helping ensure their teen drivers take smart steps to stay safe on the road. Ohio Department of Insurance provides the following insurance tips for teen drivers: Parents should conduct an insurance review with an agent to secure adequate insurance for their teen driver. Having a teen driver in the house can affect the family’s auto insurance premium. • The type of vehicle a teen driver uses as well as driving violations can impact the cost of insurance. • Most insurance companies offer discounts for having more than one car on a policy or having both your auto and homeowners insurance with the same company. • Ohioans with insurance questions can call the Ohio Department of Insurance consumer hotline at 1-800686-1526 and visit www.insurance.ohio.gov for information. Additionally, NHTSA’s w e b s i t e , w w w. n h t s a . g o v / r o a d safety/teen-driving, has detailed information and statistics on teen driving, and outlines the basic rules parents can use to help reduce the risks for teen drivers: 1. Don’t Drive Impaired. All teens are too young to legally buy, possess, or consume alcohol, but they are still at risk. Nationally, in 2016, nearly one out of five teen drivers of passenger vehicles involved in fatal crashes had been drinking. But alcohol isn’t the only substance that can keep your teen from driving safely: In 2016, 6.5 percent of adolescents ages 12 to 17 were current users of marijuana. Like many other drugs, marijuana affects a driver’s ability to react to their surroundings. Driving is a complex task, and marijuana slows reaction times, affecting the driver’s ability to drive safely. Remind your teen that driving under the influence of any impairing substance - including illicit, prescription, or overthe-counter drugs - could have deadly consequences. 2. Buckle Up — Every Trip, Every Time. Everyone — Front Seat and Back. Wearing a seat belt is one of the simplest ways for teens to stay safe in a vehicle, and it is required in all 50 States. Yet too many teens are not buckling up, and neither are their passengers. In fact, there were 569 passengers

killed in passenger vehicles driven by teen drivers, and more than half (54%) of those passengers who died were NOT buckled up at the time of the fatal crash. Even more troubling, in 85 percent of cases when the teen driver was unbuckled, the passengers were also unbuckled. Remind your teen that it’s important to buckle up on every trip, every time, no matter what – front seat and back. 3. Eyes on the Road, Hands on the Wheel. All the Time. Distractions while driving are more than just risky—they can be deadly, and are outlawed in 47 States, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 2016, among teen drivers of passenger vehicles involved in fatal crashes, 10 percent were reported as distracted at the time of the crash. Remind your teen about the dangers of texting and using a phone while driving. Distracted driving isn’t limited to cell phone use; other passengers, audio and climate controls in the vehicle, and eating or drinking while driving are all examples of dangerous distractions for teen drivers. 4. Follow the Posted Speed Limit. Speeding is a critical issue for all drivers, especially for teens. In 2016, almost one-third (31%) of teen drivers of passenger vehicles involved in a fatal crash were speeding at the time of the crash. Remind your teen to always drive within the speed limit. 5. Passengers. Passengers in a teen’s car can lead to disastrous consequences. Per data analyzed by NHTSA, teen drivers were 2.5 times more likely to engage in one or more potentially risky behaviors when driving with one teenage passenger, when compared to driving alone. The likelihood of teen drivers engaging in risky behaviors triples when driving with multiple passengers. 6.Avoid Driving Drowsy. Teens are busier than ever – studying, extracurricular activities, part-time jobs, and spending time with friends are among the long list of things they do to fill their time. However, with all of these activities, teens tend to compromise something very important: sleep. Driving drowsy is a dangerous habit that can lead to drowsy driving. Make sure your teen gets a good night’s sleep; their grades, their friends, their passengers, and other drivers will thank them (and you!) because they’ll be safer on the road. “Parents can help protect their teen drivers by talking with them about these risks, not just this week, but every week,” said ODPS Director John Born. “Remind your children, if they are distracted, they are not driving.” Explaining the rules and any other restrictions outlined in Ohio’s graduated driver licensing (GDL) law and the deadly consequences of unsafe driving practices can help encourage teens to exhibit safe driving behaviors. “One poor decision while driving can have a lasting impact and stay with a teen driver for the rest of their life,” said Colonel Paul A. Pride, superintendent of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. “That is why responsibility, awareness and safety are so important for our youngest drivers.” For more information about National Teen Driver Safety Week and to learn safer driving tips for your teens, please visit w w w. n h t s a . g o v / r o a d safety/teen-driving.
