THE NEWS DEMOCRAT $1.2 million offered for hospital A company has made a $1.2 million offer for the former Southwest Regional Medical Center. Oglethorpe, Inc. of Tampa, Florida would like to use the former hospital for a 60-100 bed behavioral health facility,

treating those with addiction and mental health issues. In addition to the purchase price, Oglethorpe estimates that $1 million will have to be spent on renovation at the facility. Once open, Oglethorpe estimates that approximately 250 people will be employed

with an annual payroll approaching $12 million. Oglethorpe already operates three other hospitals in Ohio, and seven other facilities in Texas, Louisiana and Florida. Since the property is in receivership, Common Pleas Judge Scott Gusweiler must

approve the sale. The Village of Georgetown also had to vote to amend its zoning ordnance to accommodate the business, which it did Sept. 21. Following a public hearing where Oglethorpe Ohio Operations Director Patrick Tracy answered questions about the

company’s operations, council voted 3-2 to allow the zoning change. Council members Susan Bean, Dave Guenther and Ginny Colwell voted yes, with members Kelly Cornette and Kelley Campbell voting no. Council member Wade

Highlander was absent. The special council meeting ended with everyone thinking that council had voted down the proposal, because the ordinance called for a 2/3 majority to pass as an emergency. The meeting ended with a CONTINUED ON PAGE 15

Weather takes center stage at the 2016 fair BY Wayne Gates Weather has played a role once again at the Brown County Fair. For the first time in many years, rain and cold temperatures forced the cancellation of the cheerleading contest, a Wednesday night staple. “It was cold and raining on Wednesday, so the day was pretty much a washout. We had to cancel the cheerleading competition and the first day of the truck and tractor pull,” said Senior Fair Board Member Dennis Broughton. “However, Monday was great. We had 180 entries in the parade and it went very well. Tuesday was one of

the prettiest days we’ve ever had at the Brown County Fair. We set records for attendance and the music was great.” Broughton said that what he sees at the fair gives him hope for the future. “We really believe that our junior fair leaders will be the leaders of Brown County when they grow up. We hope the Brown County Fair has had something to do with them having pride in their county, Broughton said.” 4-H Educator and County Extension Director Christy Clary said that things were running fairly smoothly on the junior fair end. “We were able to get in all the shows with the horses

throughout the rain. We’ve had great livestock shows and other events. The kids are all doing really well,” Clary said.

She added that she was very pleased with the response to a new event this year. “One of the great things

for me was seeing the support for our new B-fit event. It was Laura Wood’s dream and a lot of people have been showing up each morning to

participate.” Wood is a Brown County 4-H Junior Leader who created the event

Supreme Court candidate at fair BY Wayne Gates Ohio Supreme Court candidate Pat DeWine visited the Brown County Fair on Tuesday. Dewine currently serves on the First District Court of Appeals in Hamilton County. “I’ve been a judge on the court of appeals and prior to

I have a strong belief that the role of the courts is to apply the laws as written, not to legislate from the bench,” Dewine said in an interview with The Brown County Press. “I’m the only person running that has been both a trial judge and on the court CONTINUED ON PAGE 7

During its Sept. 22 meeting members of the Georgetown Council went into executive session to discuss several zoning issues regarding the area where the old Brown County Hospital sits. Following the executive session council scheduled a special meeting for Wednesday, Sept. 28, to make a decision on the zoning. In other business at the

meeting Village Administrator Art Owens told council that a traffic mirror that had been installed on a pole near the parking lot of the Printing Shop on Pleasant Street would be removed. “This mirror was supposed to allow traffic from the alley to see both directions on Pleasant Street when vehicles are in the public parking spaces,” Owens said, “however it is not working, and may be more of a danger than it is a help. So we’re going to be

taking it back down and we’ll have to do something else.” “I also wanted to let council know that according to Fire Chief Joey Rocky, who couldn’t be here tonight, his department is now down by two paramedics,” Owens said, “Brian Dutlinger left and has taken a position as a paramedic in Afghanistan and John Staker, has had some ankle problems. “We’ll be trying to fill those spots as soon as pos-

H.E.R.O. Tribute continues fundraising for Vietnam Memorial Wall visit in 2017 BY Martha B. Jacob The H.E.R.O. Tribute group met for its regular meeting on Sept. 12 and was opened by Chairman Bill Grabill. The group opened with a moment of silence in remembrance of 9/11. It was sadly noted that Glenn Stroup was killed in a motorcycle accident; he would have been an active part of the group’s efforts to bring the Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall to Brown County in May of 2017. According to Dick Courts, secretary of the H.E.R.O. Tribute, the group voted to approve paying off a $4,250 bill owed to Spirit of America which will cover American history from the Revolutionary War to the present day. “Our group raised $165

from the Antique Machinery Show, $100 from a bike rally, $100 from the golf outing, and $144 from the VFW Car Show,” Courts said. “Those funds are from the sale of pins, patches and other items. We were happy with the numbers.” In other actions, the group agreed to purchase two fair passes for booth workers to use, and it was reported that on Sat. Oct. 8 a “Rock Walk” would be held in Mt. Orab to benefit PTSD and suicide prevention. Proceeds will not go to the committee. “Our next event will be the Gary West Johnny Cash show scheduled for Oct. 15 at the Brown County Fairgrounds,” Courts said. “A great dinner is only $10 and the show will be $10. We’re also planning a quarter auctions at the Ripley American Legion Post 367

on Oct. 21 which will be coordinated by Judy Martin assisted by the S.A.L. Unit of Ripley. We’re looking for some great items to be raffled off.” It was reported that Bill Pritchard is handling the float which he says is coming along nicely. Chris Paul, the bagpiper was contacted and agreed to do all four days of our Memorial Wall event for $50 per day. Chris is a Vietnam Era Veteran. The group agreed to book three rooms at $40 per room at Bailey House for those people who need a place to stay, and the price includes breakfast. Also accepted by the group was a donation of $500 from Stan Purdy with the U.S. Grant Homestead Association. Long sleeve t-shirts and hoodies will be available by the week of the fair at a

cost of $18. It was also reported that a total of $240 was presented to the group from the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club. The group discussed escort arrival of the wall on May 10, 2017, which will begin in Fayetteville, pass through Mt. Orab and arrive in Georgetown. Welcoming along the way will be encouraged. Schools will be encouraged to participate. “A Home for Christmas” program will be at the Gaslight Theatre on December 10 at 7:30 p.m.” Courts said. “Big Easy and the Gators will sponsor the show and all the proceeds will be donated to the Wall project. The cost will be $10 for adults and $5 for children. We can sell concessions at the event. Fivehundred tickets will be available for sale.

Taking A Trip Through Time Today, we are sharing two historical Brown County Fair photos. In the late 1920’s, 1930's and 40's all premium winners had to parade in the center ring. Pictured above in 1929 Lewis Holton Cattle Company of the Bowman Store area of Byrd Township parades his Shorthorn herd during one of the parades. There was no year specified for the photo below but this is a photo of the Brown County Fair midway. If you have more information about this photo or would like more information about the Brown County Historical Society please call Ned S. Lodwick at (937) 446-3226. ‘Taking a Trip Through Time’ is a feature of the Brown County Press that is supplied by our readers. If you have photos of places within Brown County that are at least 30 years old please feel free to submit them along with some information about the photo to The Brown County Press by email to bcpress@frontier.com or mail them to or drop them off at The Brown County Press 219 South High Street Mt. Looking back on fair memories By the time you read this, the 156th Little State Fair may be over, but the memories will live on. Did you go? Everyone has their fair favorites: truck pulls, tractor pulls, horseshows, animal shows of all kinds, floral hall (some pretty cool stuff in there indeed) games, rides, or maybe it’s just the food and the reunion that makes it all worth while. Here’s a food memory of ours at the fair not too many years ago, after a morning of horse shows. For lunch we selected the pork tenderloin sandwich. It is always fun to take them over to barn isle and have a pow-wow so to speak, reviewing the morning shows and discussing the upcoming afternoon classes. This one particular year, something was wrong with the horseradish that we “always” put on the sandwiches along with a bit of mustard. Much to our surprise, when we all took that ravenous first bites, simultaneously, our eyes begun to water and we could hardly breathe. "Oh my gosh," someone finally catches their breath and belts

SHERRY MITCHELL TAKE JOY, A FARMHOUSE JOURNAL out what we all were thinking, "that is hot." The horseradish was extremely hot this particular year, maybe caused by the drought. Everyone was chasing it down with his or her beverage. But we weren’t going to waste a great sandwich so we scraped off the excess horseradish and continued on. Did that stop us from ever eating the sandwich with horseradish again? Not on your life. That memory will live on. Then too, each year of the fair, I marvel at the 4-H kids. All year they look forward to this big event. Year after year many come back to compete. They have been given the parameters of their participation and what will win them the blue ribbon or, quite possibly the best of show or Grand Champion over all. In the barn isle is such great sports-

manship. The kids, in the horse barn isle where I mostly hang out, and I am sure it is this way in the other barns too, come gather and compliment the winner often times with a big hug. Compliments are plenty amongst the 4-H kids. If there is one thing these 4-H kids learn and demonstrate is, “hard work pays off in the end.” Many years, I have watched kids, when the year before they maybe didn’t place, get a ribbon in their class, the next year they return with greater experience, (perhaps a bit more practice this year than the year before), and are getting a few ribbons, quite possibly even finally winning the blue (1st place) ribbon, which is always a great moment throughout the barn. Usually, the seasoned 4-H kids are the ones who have figured it out, “practice makes perfect,” and most importantly did not quit, who really start winning every class they participate in. And even though they become “the one to beat,” the kids all take it in stride.

So the life lesson here is, keep trying, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again,” an ancient adage, first recorded in 1840 and often heard around my house growing up. But here’s an “idiom” I heard also as a child, maybe you did too, but I couldn’t so easily figure it out. An idiom being “a combination of words that has a figurative meaning,” (I read there are about twenty-five thousand in the English language.) Here it is, “Even a blind pig finds an acorn once in a while.” I always wondered what that meant when I heard Daddy say it. Many years later I realize that if you continue to try, search, seek, though you may not see how it is possible with the eyes and you don’t give up, you are bound to succeed. At the end of the fair, we can all learn much from the 4-H departments. Can you still recite the pledge if you were once in 4-H? To refresh your memory, recited at every meeting: I pledge my head to clearer thinking; my heart to greater loyalty; my hands to larger service and my health to better living, for my club, my community, my country and my world. Our hats off (is that an adage or an idiom?) to all the volunteer 4H advisors for guiding the kids in the county in the right direction.

This campaign year has been full of twists and turns. We don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow, let alone on November 8. So talking about what comes afterward seems premature. But it’s been on my mind a lot, because I’m worried. This is not about who wins the presidency. I’m concerned about the aftermath of this campaign season and how hard it’s going to be for our next set of elected officials, from the President on down, to govern. Let’s start with the belief expressed by a lot of people — including some candidates — that the system is “rigged.” This is a perilous way to treat the country’s political system; it sows distrust in future election results, delegitimizes winners, and undermines the government’s credibility. If the charge takes hold, it will put political stability at risk. We all have criticisms to make of the system. We know it doesn’t work perfectly and that there’s no shortage of challenges the nation needs to address. But to convey the impression that the whole system is rigged is dangerous and risky. Without a basic foundation of trust, representative government crumbles. Instead of taking aim at “the system,” we could instead focus our criticism on a more substantive target: politicians, including the two presidential candidates, who have failed to serve us well in their debate on the economy. Much of the debate has revolved around immigration, trade, and other issues of the moment. These are not unimportant, but they’re not the heart of the matter. The real issue — the one that politicians have proffered few solutions for — is that the economy is not working for most people. True, there’s been some improvement in the lot of middle-income earners, but the fundamental issue that economists of all stripes have been warning us about remains. This is that we face significant structural problems, driven not so much by foreign competition and immigrant workers, but by advancing technology and globalization. Our real economic challenge, in other words, is how to provide meaningful work and good wages to tens of millions of clerks, accountants, factory workers and service providers whose jobs are disappearing because of robots, machine learning, and other irreversible changes in

how work is accomplished. Politicians need to place much more emphasis on economic growth, which is the key that unlocks many doors and is the preferred course to ease the anxiety and cynicism abroad in the country. Growth should be the central aim of economic policy, and how to achieve it should be the focus of the policy debate. The problem is, this election isn’t providing us with a substantial policy debate. We’ve heard plenty about personality, vision, and the alleged dirty dealing of people on the other side. Serious debate about policy approaches has been replaced by sound bites signifying... well, not very much. Indeed, if anything characterizes this election, it’s the politics of personal destruction. Demonizing the opponent has become the central concern of many campaigns, up and down the political ladder. This approach is toxic for democratic institutions and political culture. We have to be able to disagree in this country on matters of great import and controversy without tearing into and trying to destroy the opposition. We have always had — and should have — vigorous partisanship. But today, politicians prefer hunkering down with their fellow believers and party members and circling the wagons. This makes it very hard to get negotiations going, which is the only way to make the system work. All of this — the attacks on the system, the lack of meaningful debate about improving Americans’ economic future, the generally substance-free nature of the campaign, the politics of demonization — will make it very hard for whoever wins office to govern well. The anger, frustration, cynicism and outright pessimism that we’re seeing in this election cycle will not miraculously dissipate on Election Day. It used to be that when a president came into office, a substantial majority of the American people gave him the benefit of the doubt, and with it an extended period in which to get things done. I don’t believe that’s going to happen after this election. And all Americans will be worse off as a result. LEAVE ME ALONE Two weeks ago I left off in Mark 5 where we find the story of the maniac of Gadara. Jesus was having a conversation with the unclean spirit named Legion which had possessed a man. We do not know the man's name but he had somehow allowed many unclean spirits to enter into him. In verse 7 this unclean spirit recognized Jesus by name, called him the Son of the most high God, and worshipped him. In verse 8 Jesus had told the unclean spirit, "...Come out of the man...". Even this unclean spirit, which is also called a devil in the Bible, had to recognize the authority of Jesus and obey Him. Today I will fill in a few more details of what took place between the time Jesus told the unclean spirit to leave the man and the time we find the man sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind. In verse 9 this unclean spirit tells Jesus, "...My name is Legion: for we are many." Then verse 10 tells us, "And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country." You see devils like certain geographical locations. Have you ever went on a vacation or just a certain place where you feel uneasy about and the Holy Spirit is telling you that you shouldn't be there? Sometimes there is just a feeling of oppression. One time my wife and I went on vacation and when we came to a certain town and I told my wife that there was something spiritually wrong with that town. Now, in our text, these devils did not want to leave this particular region. They knew that Jesus had the authority to send them anywhere and they wanted His permission to stay in that country! They were begging Him! It said that this unclean spirit besought Jesus much that he would not send them out of the country. In James 2:19 it says, "Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble." Now watch verses 11-12 in Mark 5, "Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding. And all the devils besought him,

REV. TED R. HOUSE BIBLE BAPTIST CHURCH MT. ORAB www.bbcmtorab.com saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them." Now, all the devils which are in this man are pleading with Jesus! What an amazing conversation that must have been! These devils did not want to be disembodied. They needed a residence! Verse 13 says, "And forthwith Jesus gave them leave..." They could not have done so if Jesus had not given His permission! Jesus has more power and authority than we realize. "...And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea." Here is a thought, in the book of Revelation, the Antichrist is coming up out of the sea. These devils wanted to be in the sea. That is something to ponder! Verses 14-15 say, "And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done. And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid." When they got there, the herdsmen that saw everything began to give them a play-by-play account of what had happened. And look how they responded in verse 17, "And they began to pray him" (Jesus) "to depart out of their coasts." You would think that they would have welcomed Him, but no, they wanted Him to leave. And guess what, people are still wanting Him to leave them alone today! They had the choice to welcome Him or reject Him and so do you!

It’s important that we have an Ohio Supreme Court comprised of justices who respect the rule

He added that he also has public service experience from off the bench as well. “In addition, I have served as a Hamilton County Commissioner and on the Cincinnati City Council, so I understand how the decisions of the supreme court affect other branches of government,” Dewine said. THE BROWN COUNTY PRESS

Rockets rally for first league win BY Wade Linville The Brown County Press It took an impressive second half rally by the Fayetteville-Perry Rockets to lift the defending Ohio Valley Athletic League football champions to a 19-point victory over Hillcrest in their first league game of the season on Sept. 23 at Fayetteville. The Rockets racked up 513 yards of total offense to take down Hillcrest 61-42 in week five on the gridiron Sept. 23. The Rockets trailed Hillcrest by 11 at halftime but returned to hold the Hillcrest offense scoreless in the second half. Fayetteville football fans got to witness Rocket senior running back Chase Jester snap the record for rushing yards in a single game, as he took 41 carries for a total of 383 yards. Jester ran for seven touchdowns in the Rocket win, with much credit going out to the Fayetteville offensive line for its impressive blocking throughout the night. “The line did a tremendous job,” said Fayetteville head coach Kevin Finch

following the win over Hillscrest. “It was a great team effort on offense. We had a lot of people out there doing their jobs. Everyone who wasn't carrying the ball was blocking. I was very pleased with the teamwork.” After holding the Hillcrest offense scoreless in the first offensive drive of the game, the Rockets took over on their own 35 yard line to start their first drive. Jester took his first carry for a first down, moving the Rockets to their own 45 yard line with a 10 yard gain. A couple more carries by Jester pushed the Rockets into Hillcrest territory at the 42 yard line. Following a false start penalty on the Rockets, it was Jester carrying for an 11 yard gain to bring up second down and four to go for the Rockets at the Hillcrest 35 yard line. From there, another Jester carry would move the Rockets seven yards closer to pay dirt, giving the Rockets a first down at the Hillcrest 29 yard line. Fayetteville's junior quarterback Luke Wiederhold then ran for a nice gain on

the QB keeper, but a holding penalty on the Rockets would put them at first down and 15 yards to go at the Hillcrest 31 yard line. Fayetteville's senior wide receiver Tyler Kingus ran for a seven yard gain on a sweep to bring up third down and eight to go for the Rockets, and a completed pass from Widerhold to Kingus was good for a 16 yard gain to put the Rockets at first and goal on the nine yard line near the midway point in the first quarter. With 6:06 to go in the first quarter, it was Jester taking a carry for a nine yard touchdown. With the successful kick for the extra point by junior Clay Davis, the Rockets held a 7-0 lead. It didn't take long for the Hillcrest offense to cruise down the field on its next possession to cap off their drive with a 23 yard touchdown reception by Nigel Mayo, followed by an unsuccessful two-point conversion attempt, to cut the Rocket lead to 7-6. The Rockets managed one more touchdown before the end of the first quarter, but it was Hillcrest heating up to take a 20-15 lead to end the first period of play. Hillcrest went on to outscore the Rockets 22-16 in the second quarter, and at halftime it was Fayetteville

trailing 42-31. After struggling to stop the Hillcrest offense in the first half of play, the Rocket defense returned to the field to hold Hillcrest scoreless for the entire second half, while the Rocket offense scored 24 in the third quarter and six in the fourth quarter to rally for the victory. “You have to give credit where credit is due. Hillcrest was making plays. Mayo is a very good receiver and they have a good quarterback,” said Finch. “Our defense really had to step up in the second half.” The Rockets upped their overall record to 3-2 with the week five and held a 10 record in OVAL play. The loss marked only the second of the season for Hillcrest, as they dropped to an overall record of 3-2 and a league record of 0-1. The Rockets prepared to face Miami Valley Christian for the week six OVAL contest at Fayetteville on Sept. 30 in what is expected to be their most challenging league contest of the season. As for Jester and the Rockets' offensive line, you can expect their exceptional play to continue as the season rolls along. Jester led Southwest Ohio rushing leaders after

his week five performance against Hillcrest with a total of 940 rushing yards. “Chase (Jester) is a hard worker. He's the type of

player you can't keep out of the weight room,” said Finch. “He puts himself in a position to be very successful.”

Western Brown football team begins league play coming off 4 straight losses

BY Wade Linville The Brown County Press Overall inexperience at the varsity level has taken its toll on the Western Brown Broncos in the early season of play. After cruising to 48-22 victory over Hillsboro to open the season, the Broncos have suffered four straight losses, dropping to a 1-4 overall record coming into their first league contest against the New Richmond Lions in a home game on Sept. 30. Keep in mind that this year's Broncos are equipped with a great deal of raw talent with just more than a handful of seniors after graduating several key seniors from last year's league champion team and they have taken their lumps against some tough nonleague opponents while making their way through a grueling regular season schedule. Three of the Broncos' four losses came during their three straight weeks of road games, as they fell to Little Miami in a 28-26 heartbreaker on Sept. 2, followed by a 35-19 loss at Ross on Sept. 9, and a 52-

27 loss to Jackson on Sept. 16. The Broncos returned home Sept. 23 to host Campbell County, and what started as a close nonleague contest would end in a 48-21 Western Brown loss. Much of the Broncos' problems began late in the first half, as they struggled to put a stop to the Campbell offense. A seven yard touchdown reception by sophomore Josh Taylor from junior quarterback Seth Becker, followed by a successful extra-point attempt by Lane Sexton, tied the game at seven with 8:36 to go in the second quarter, but the Campbell County offense would go on to score four more touchdowns before the first half reached an end to hold a 35-7 lead at halftime break. The Broncos were able to trim the Campbell lead to 35-14 with 8:28 to go in the third quarter off a seven yard touchdown reception by junior wide receiver Wyatt Fischer to cap off a drive, but just under four minutes later it was Campbell County topping off a drive with a 12 yard touch-

down pass from junior quarterback Austin Hoeh to junior tight end Mason Kramer to widen the margin to 42-14. The Broncos were able to reach pay dirt once again before the end of the third quarter, capping off a drive with a four yard touchdown run by junior Zach Stacy to help slice the Campbell lead to 42-21. That marked the final touchdown of the night for the Broncos. The Broncos were held scoreless in the fourth quarter of play, while the Campbell County offense managed to punch in one more touchdown to seal a 27-point victory. The Broncos had three turnovers in the week five loss. Becker completed 25-of35 passes for just over 200 passing yards against Campbell. Stacy took 12 carries for 53 yards to lead Bronco ball-carriers, while Fischer led Bronco receivers with 11 catches for a total of 79 yards. Western Brown head football coach Don Sizer said his players and coaches continue to work hard from day to day. “(Defensively) we have CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

The Western Brown Lady Broncos upped their overall record to 10-6 on the season with a Sept. 21 victory on the road at Wilmington High School in a match that lasted just three sets (25-11, 25-18, 25-16). The Sept. 21 win comes after the Lady Broncos suffered a road loss to the Williamsburg Lady Wildcats in a match that lasted three sets on Sept. 20 (2523, 25-11, 25-15). Western Brown junior Tessa Pinkerton continues to rank among the Western Brown attack leaders with 169 kills on the season, while teammate Erin Bishop has recorded 105 kills. Pinkerton has also been a leader at the service line for the Lady Broncos with 49 aces in 226 total serves. Western Brown setter

Emily Cooper has racked up an impressive 419 assists to aid in the Lady Broncos' success on the court this season, while teammate Mary Sizer has recorded a total of 245 digs. After a break for Brown County Fair week, the Lady Broncos were scheduled to be back in action Oct. 4, hosting Norwood in

a Southern Buckeye Athletic/Academic Conference American Division match. The tight battle for the SBAAC American Division title continues with the New Richmond Lady Lions unbeaten in league play at 5-0 and the Lady Broncos in second place in league standings with a 41 record.

Brown County Athletes of the Week CHASE JESTER Fayetteville-Perry High School’s senior football standout, Chase Jester, rushed for a total of 383 yards to snap his school’s single-game rushing record, aiding his team to a 61-42 win over Hillcrest in their first Ohio Valley Athletic League contest of the season. Jester ran for a total of seven touchdowns in the Sept. 23 win, taking a total of 41 carries behind excellent blocking from the offensive line.

BAILEY ADAMS Ripley-Union-LewisHuntington’s senior soccer standout, Bailey Adams, has played a huge role in the Lady Jays’ success on the field this season. Adams racked up four goals to aid the Lady Jays to a 7-0 victory over the visiting Fayetteville-Perry Lady Rockets on Sept. 20, marking the fourth win of the season for the RULH varsity girls soccer squad.

to get better,” Sizer said following the three losses on the road. According to Sizer, struggles on the defensive end have placed a great deal of pressure on the offensive team to put up high scores. In five games the Broncos put up a total of 141

points while giving up 185 points to opponents. With a 1-4 record at the midway point in the season, confidence has also become a concern. The 1-4 Broncos and their dedicated coaching staff were hoping that their weeks of hard work and the experience they've gained on the gridiron while taking

their lumps from some strong non-league opponents will pay off in victories as they began their quest to repeat as Southern Buckeye Athletic/Academic Conference American Division champions on Sept. 30 against the New Richmond Lions who entered week six with a 4-1 record.

Fayetteville-Perry volleyball team even at 4-4 in SHAC BY Wade Linville The Brown County Press

The Fayetteville-Perry Lady Rockets upped their Southern Hills Athletic Conference record to 4-3 by topping the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats in a match at Fayetteville on Sept.

21. It was a league match that lasted four sets with the home-standing Lady Rockets winning the first set 25-20 and falling in set two by a score of 25-22. The Lady Rockets returned to claim a 25-22 win in set three, and capped off the match victory by dominating for a 25-11 win in set four. The Lady Rockets were on the road Sept. 22 for an

SHAC match against the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs, and it was the Lady Mustangs coming out on top in a match that lasted four sets (25-23, 23-25, 25-13, 25-23). SHAC golf season in the books Local players earn All-SHAC honors

BY Wade Linville The Brown County Press

After four rounds of the Southern Hills Athletic Conference high school golf action, the regular season is officially in the books. The Ripley-UnionLewis-Huntington Blue Jays, coached by Michael Scanlan, wrapped up a very successful season by finishing third overall in final SHAC standings with three golfers earning AllSHAC honors by finishing among the top 15 in the conference. Ripley senior Dylan Phillips earned All-SHAC honors for the fourth year in a row. He played his most impressive round on the last day of the tourna-

ment by shooting a 37 and earning 6th place overall. Ripley senior Scottie Ott earned All-SHAC honors for his second time. He had a rough third round, but he bounced back with a 43 in the final round to secure 12th place overall. Junior Brian Dunn earned All-SHAC honors for his second time. He played most consistently over the four days (45, 43, 42, 45) and earned 11th place overall. “The team's success at the Southern Hills Athletic Conference establishes some positive momentum heading into the Division III Sectional Golf Tournament in Cincinnati on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at Walden Ponds Golf Course,” said Scanlan.

“We must place as one of the top 4 teams out of 13 teams in order to advance to the District Tournament. If they play like they did during the league tournament, then we may surprise some of the teams in our sectional. Advancing to the District Tournament is possible and within our sights, so we plan to do everything we can to make it happen.” The Eastern Warriors finished sixth of eight teams in SHAC play this season with one golfer, Jordan Johnson, finishing eighth overall in individual standings to earn AllSHAC honors. Winning the SHAC this year was the team from West Union High School while the North Adams Green Devils finished runner-up.

Georgetown Mayor Dale Cahall. “That type of payroll is very exciting to hear. We’ve taken it on the chin the past four or five years with the former Southwest Regional Medical Center and Meadowwood Nursing Facility closing. We’ve had a net job loss of about 400 people over the past several years.” Cahall said that the income taxes from a $12 million payroll will solve a lot of problems for the village. “We are running ourselves ragged with EMS runs. We will have well over 1000 runs this year. The closing of our hospital has put a real strain on our volunteers,” Cahall said. “We will probably have to go to some sort of paid life squad in the near future. So the dollars that would come from the additional payroll tax from a new business would solve a lot of problems.” Tracy said that the hospital is a voluntary stay facility and would not discharge patients without a plan for followup care and a destination. “This will not be a ‘treat and street’ situation by any means,” Tracy said at the meeting. He added that the hospital

Tracy said that he was very pleased with his experience in Brown County so far. “I think there is a real need for a hospital like ours in a small community like this. The people we have met have been really supportive of the

idea,” Patrick said after the meeting. When asked what made the former hospital so attractive, Tracy said “It had only been closed for two years and a lot of the former staff is probably still in the area, so we don’t have to go out and find a full staff from the beginning.” Tracy added that he and the

company were looking forward to being good neighbors. “I would like to thank all the people we have been involved with so far. We would like to show the people of Georgetown that we are a good partner in the community,” Tracy said. In addition to Gusweiler’s approval, the proposed con-

special meeting set for next week, however Village Solicitor Joe Braun determined after further research that the vote was valid. In an e-mail to The Brown County Press, Braun said that “The Ordinance was presented as an emergency for (Councils’) consideration. Five members of Council voted to suspend the rules. By suspending the rules, the Ordinance did not need multiple readings to go into effect. Then, Council voted to pass it as an emergency and the vote was 3-2. It needed 5 votes to pass as an emergency. As such, it DID pass, but not as an emergency. As a result of not passing the ordinance as an emergency, it passed and simply goes into effect in 30 days versus immediately upon passage.” Therefore, the way is cleared for the hospital to reopen as a behavioral health facility following the approval of Gusweiler. “I am exited for this process to move forward and for the employment opportunities that could be coming to the village of Georgetown as well as the opportunity for treatment that many people desperately need,” said

Crews from the Brown County Asphalt will be paving U.S. 52 from Hanover Street in Ripley to the western corporation limit of Aberdeen. Construction also includes repairs on U.S. 68 to the approaches of the U.S. 52 overpass to the William Harsha Bridge. The contractors are scheduled to begin Friday, September 30, and while crews are at work, traffic will be reduced to one lane and maintained by flaggers. The Brown County Asphalt Company was awarded a contract in the amount of approximately $506,458 to complete the project, and all work is anticipated to be completed in late October. In a separate project, Brown County Asphalt crews have begun resurfacing U.S. 68, from approximately two miles north of Georgetown to the northern corporation limit of Mt. Orab. Construction also includes rehabilitating bridges and installing ADA ramps in Mt. Orab. Throughout construction of this $1.06 million project, traffic will be maintained in one lane with the use of flaggers, and all work is scheduled to be completed by mid-November. For additional information on lane and road closures caused by construction, accidents, flooding or other related traffic events throughout the state, visit ODOT on the web at www.Ohgo.com.
