Lawsuit filed against Judge Bubp is settled BY Wayne Gates An Adams County probate case against Brown County Probate/Juvenile Court Judge Danny Bubp has been settled for $6000. The case was filed against Bubp on July 28, 2014, alleging that Bubp had inappropriately benefitted from the sale of

property from the estate of Hubert Wescott while serving as the family attorney. Neither Bubp or plaintiff’s attorney Nick Ring had any comment on the settlement. The case entered the public eye in September of that year after Bubp declared his candidacy for

judge. He denied any wrongdoing at the time, calling the lawsuit and public attention a “political smear based on his candidacy for judicial office. The settlement was reached on April 29, but was not finalized and signed by all parties until August 29.

Regarding the allegations against Bubp, the settlement reads; “Plaintiffs Janette Jackson and Teresa Isaacs...hereby release, hold harmless, acquit and discharge Danny R. Bubp of all claims, causes of action, damages, losses or expenses. It also releases Bubp from “all claims, causes of

action or alleged damages for breach of fiduciary duty, fraud, misrepresentation, negligence, legal malpractice, concealment, rescission, breach or contract and/or any other cause of action.. The settlement entry also states that “Danny R. Bubp makes no admission of fault, wrongdoing or li-

ability, which is expressly denied. The parties agree that they have agreed to compromise and settle this disputed matter purely to avoid further litigation, time and expense. The action was dismissed with prejudice by visiting judge Steven Williams, which means that it cannot be refiled.

Creighton led a life well lived BY Martha B. Jacob (I recently had the privilege of sitting down with members of the Vernon Creighton family to learn more about Vern’s life, his passions and his unconditional love for his family and friends. The following excerpts are from that conversation, a few days following his passing, October 10, 2016.)

Kyle Moore was sentenced to 16 years in prison for attacking Ripley Police Officer John Amole in January.

Moore sentenced for police officer assault BY Wayne Gates Kyle Moore is going to prison for 16 years for assaulting Ripley Police Officer John Amole. Moore pleaded guilty to Felonious Assault, Aggravated Robbery and Failure to Comply With an Order or Signal of Police Officer charges on October 14. Common Pleas Judge Scott Gusweiler sentenced more the same day. Moore assaulted Amole following a traffic stop in January. He knocked

Amole unconscious, took his gun and fled. That lead to a daylong manhunt in the Ripley area until Moore was captured in the area of Ohio Valley Manor. Eight of the 16 years that Moore was sentenced to are mandatory based on the charges and the involvement of a firearm. Moore made it a point to apologize for his actions to Amole and his wife who were in the courtroom for the guilty plea and sentencing.

Gusweiler told Moore during the sentencing that he understood that he had experienced a difficult life, but he was ultimately responsible for his actions. “There is nothing this court can do, Mr. Moore, to undo what you did. You’ve been through a lot. But at some point that violent cycle needs to stop. You cannot expect to not be punished when you almost kill a law enforcement officer, Gusweiler said.

been in a cage before. They all had to be caught by hand to take possession. That didn’t matter to Grandpa, he was bidding on those peacocks, because he told his granddaughter she could have a peacock. He bought all seven peacocks, and it took his son several weeks to trap them. Vern loved being a grandpa to all six of his grandchildren. They all lived within a mile of him and that’s the way he liked it. For as long as any of his children could remember, every Sunday was a time to

get together as a family and share each other’s lives. On June 3 this year, Vern and his wife Joy celebrated their 49th anniversary by traveling to Alaska (the 49th state). Vern was already making plans for his 50th wedding anniversary with a trip to Hawaii. “Vern and I met when we were 16 at the Sardinia Methodist Church, Joy said smiling, “At first I thought he was the most obnoxious guy I’d ever met, but we fell in love and have been in love for more than CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Vernon Creighton was well known around Brown County as a teacher, a principal and a school board member. But there was so much more to this ‘good’ man, than what most people ever knew. When his eight year old granddaughter saw an auction flyer advertising peacocks she said, ‘Grandpa, I want a peacock. The entire family knew what was going to happen next. Grandpa and granddaughter were headed for an auction. According to Vern’s son Andy, the auction in Georgetown lasted all day long and the peacocks were the last item to be auctioned off. Before the bidding started on the peacocks, the auctioneer told the crowd that the seven peacocks were free range birds on 80 acres of land and had never

Vern and the group to keep up with all the needs in our community. But Vern did all that he could. He made many friends through this Laborers for the Master group and he continued helping them even after the group disbanded. “My dad was always helping someone, said son Andy, “that’s what we all saw our whole lives. He was a true hero to us all. But dad was also a very humble man and would probably be embarrassed knowing he was being acknowledged for doing the things he did. Dad would say to always take the high road, always do the right thing and help anyone you could and not expect to be paid for it. “And that’s how myself and my two sisters have always lived our lives. He was the epitome of what a good father should be, what a good husband should be and definitely what a good grandfather should be. We will miss him forever. Vernon Creighton had an effect on everyone he ever met, he never held a grudge, he had few regrets and would help anyone and everyone who needed a helping hand. Joy said that Vernon was the love of her life and added that he had a God-given talent to teach children. Vernon Creighton’s Memorial Service was held at Southern Hills Career and Technical Center in Georgetown, where he

was president of the board of education. The line of

visitors seemed endless for several hours.

50 years. Joy recalled the day the two were married, when they were 19. She remembered as they turned to walk back down the isle after being married, he stopped, turned to her and said... “Well Pest...we’ve done it now. “From that day on, that’s what he called me, Pest. And for the next 50 years of our life, I was never, ever offended by that, because I always knew it was said in love, Joy said. The family also talked about a small rock that Vern always carried in his pocket which had deep meaning to him. During his 10 years as principal at Russellville Elementary School, the students would often bring Christmas gifts for their principal. Usually the gifts were little trinkets of some kind. But one little boy brought Principal Creighton a gift that he himself loved, a small colorful rock. When he gave it to his principal, Vern thanked the little boy for the beautiful gift and told him that the day he graduated from high school he would give it back to him. Vern carried that little rock with him every day, on every vacation to every state in America. He cherished the gift. Many years later he ran into the young man and offered it back to him but was told by the boy to

keep it, because it belonged to him. The rock was in his pocket the day he died. Vern spent 25 years teaching, 10 years as a principal and served about eight years as a school board member at Eastern School District. “In all those years working with children, Joy said, “Vern never left the house without having at least eight quarters in his pocket. He always said, you never know when a kid wouldn’t have enough lunch money, or needed milk money. He believed that no child should ever have to be without what they needed. Joy said that in the winter when it snowed, Vern was the first one out on his tractor, scraping all the neighbors driveways for them before they were even up. Several years ago Vern was instrumental in organizing and being a part of a group called ‘Laborers for the Master’ which met once a month. The group’s goal was to help anyone who needed help. The group built wheel chair ramps, repaired floors for an elderly couple, mowed lawns all summer for those who couldn’t, even cut and hauled firewood for people who burned firewood for heat. “The list of people who needed help just kept growing and growing, Joy said. “It became almost overwhelming for

Sardinia residents to vote of road repair levy CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 the reason this levy was needed. “This will generate approximately $43,000 per year,â€? Sardinia Mayor Greg Cassidy told the crowd at the special meeting. “Prior to 1980 we had a fire, police, street, cemetery, street light and general funds levies. Together these totaled about 15 mills.â€? Cassidy added that monies for the street operating fund come from the gasoline and auto license taxes, as well as a portion of the income tax collections. This funding allows us to just cover the everyday expenses,â€? Cassidy said. “We are in emergency mode doing all we can afford to deter the deterioration of the streets by using crack filler and patching pot holes as we can. The $43,000 that would be generated by this levy isn’t even enough to take the place of what we have been supplementing from the general fund.â€? Cassidy said that should the levy pass, the village would not be receiving funds from the levy until the middle of 2017. “We have asked the engineering firm, McCarty and Associates to give us some estimates on three different streets so we have a better understanding of the costs involved for street repairs,â€? he said. Several streets and roads in the village were discussed regarding much needed repairs. Several estimates received from the engineering firm included: • Ogden Lane needed .8 miles of road repair at an estimated cost of $125,000 • Yochum Road needs base repair and ditching at an estimated cost of $105,000 • College Avenue needs storm drains, curbs, sidewalks and new asphalt at an estimated cost of $57,600 Cassidy said that most

grants demand matching funds to put toward the project, which are not currently available. He told the crowd that it has been over 10 years since any significant street levy funds have been available to the village. “In order to see this village grow like it should be growing, Cassidy said, “We’ve got to start putting money back into the village with improvements. A couple months back, she barged out the door from her safe place we kept her during her heat cycle and mated with our male Corgi. At first we were frustrated, not wanting puppies. How quickly can an event such as this take place? That event, in the blink of an eye while we are running across the yard shouting, “No, no.” But instinct over rode our shouting. We marked the calendar 65 days ahead: Puppies. The good thing I learned after the mating is there is a hybrid mixed breed of the cross called Augies. Trump is not the perfect candidate So Donald Trump said a few a bad words and now a couple of women have come out and said he sexually harassed them. My response is, "So What." This election is not about what he said but about ideas, about what direction this country will go in. No, he is not my first choice for president but for me he is the only choice. Hillary Clinton wants to open up our borders and let in whoever wants to come in. She can not follow rules and had to have her own private email server instead of doing things the right way and using the government's server. What does that tell you about her faith in the government? And here is some food for thought. If the Russians hacked the DNC's email and now John Podesta's email, what makes you think they didn't hack her private email that she had set up in her house all those years? And probably the Chinese hacked it also, we may

never know or we may find out someday in a really, really bad way. Republicans are really good at snatching defeat from victory. When the tape came out where Donald said those things 11 years ago, they jumped ship faster than rats off a sinking ship. Now, think back to when Bill Clinton ran for President and the accusations that came out about him, did Democrats leave him? No! They stood by him, and then stood by him for a second term. Did anybody leave Hillary when the email scandal came out? Again, no! They stick by their candidate no matter what they say or do. This election isn't about electing a preacher, elder or deacon in the church. It is about finding someone to lead this country and she will lead us down a road that will destroy this nation. The recent email leaks from John Podesta show how her staff feels about Catholics and Evangelicals. Is that the kind of

advisers you want advising the President? Making fun of people because of their beliefs or because of a certain religion they have chosen. If this would have been a bunch or Republicans making fun of Muslims, the fallout would be tremendous! There would be accusations of bigotry, insensitivity and all sorts of other words that I can't spell or understand without a dictionary. And add on top of all this, the Clinton Foundation and her collusion with the media helping her out with interviews and suppressing some stories that would hurt her, she is not the person to run this nation. And something that really made me mad the other day was our President telling me as a Christian not to vote for Donald Trump because it would take too much forgiveness. Really!? I think Donald and Hillary are equal on that level. I know about God's forgiveness. There is not a

certain level for one person than there is for another. But our current President wouldn't know about that because he sat under Reverend Jeremiah Wright for 20 years, who instead of asking God to bless America he asked for God to damn America from the pulpit! Kevin P. Jodrey

drivers of America’s economic machine, to once again unleash our Republic’s entrepreneurial dream, lessening the risk for those willing to start a business. Third, your vote is not only electing a President, but an administration and team the winner brings with them. His selection of Gov. Mike Pence, an avowed Christian, as his Vice President, Trey Gowdy as his choice for Attorney General, and the names of possible Supreme Court Justices gives one a sense as to the caliber of people he’d surround himself with. There are more reasons I believe Donald would be the best person for President. Thank goodness, he’s already putting an end to political correctness. He calls an illegal immigrant “illegal,” refusing to grant citizenship as an automatic right. He’d make the border stronger and not take refugees from rogue states without extreme vetting. As a business man, he’d be a wiser and tougher negotiator. No more one-sided agreements with our trading partners. He’d uphold the Second Amendment and gun rights. He’d restore law and order so the neighborhoods of all lawabiding citizens are protected. He’d restore the military and turn the Benghazi fiasco into decisive support for building a coalition to put an end to ISIS rogues. Finally, his children seem to be amazing and respectful. Paraphrasing Scripture, if the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree it says volumes about the tree and its character (Matthew 7:15-20). Donald believes in his children, raising them with disciplines that permit each one to achieve on their own merit. If he has done this as a dad, he may just have the qualities needed to make America great again as our Republic’s President. Doug Carter Georgetown

I admit unapologetically as being patriotic, and unapologetically of being a follower of Jesus Christ. I was born in the late thirties, and graduated from Hamersville high school in the late fifties. I served my country as a Marine in the early sixties. I married my childhood sweetheart. This marriage lasted for over forty before she suddenly died. I was a dad to five wonderful children, one of which died after living but a single day. I worked in Cincinnati and retired after forty-plus years of employment. I currently teach an adult Sunday School class. The above summarized background is important as I’m what one presidential politician considers me as a “deplorable” because I support her opposition—Donald Trump. And perhaps you too are asking, “How can you support Trump after all the things he has said? How can you as a Christian support such a man?” Is Donald perfect? No. Is his opponent perfect? No. This reminds of a biblical quotation: “There is no one righteous, not even one” (Romans 3:10). There are no perfect candidates or voters. I don’t have to defend or agree with all of Donald’s bad actions to vote for him. So why am I voting for him? That’s a fair and reasonable question, and here’s my answer. One of my top three reasons for supporting him is SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States). With the loss of Anthony Scalia, the fragile conservative majority is in jeopardy. If Hillary is elected, the court would no doubt be lost to leftist judges for decades and the role of our Constitution as a guiding principle would be cast aside. Second, Donald will cut taxes and big government regulations for all deplorable Americans. These two things alone will allow small business entrepreneurs, the prime

HELL God does not want anyone to go to the place called Hell. In fact, God loves people so much that He gave His only begotten Son to die on the cross of Calvary so that we can have eternal life with Him in Heaven. So, I want you to consider this place called Hell. Jesus gave us the best description of Hell in Luke 16 beginning in verse 19, "There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the begger died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead." Now folks, we have the whole Bible today and the opportunity to hear God's word is very much available in our country. However, there are many who will refuse

REV. TED R. HOUSE BIBLE BAPTIST CHURCH MT. ORAB www.bbcmtorab.com to be persuaded! This story in the Bible is not a parable. It is a literal story told by Jesus about this man called Lazarus and an unnamed rich man. One went to Heaven and one went to Hell. Consider this. First, Hell is a place of separation. Verse 26 says, "...between us and you there is a great gulf fixed..." After you die there is no second chance to go to Heaven. It is one or the other. In Hell, you would be separated from your loved ones who have gone to Heaven and you would be separated from the presence of God, the love of God, and the goodness of God forever! The second thing is that Hell is a place of torments! Jesus uses the word torments or tormented 4 times in this story! It is a place of both physical and mental torment. The rich man pleaded for one drop of water to cool his tongue! In verse 24 it says, "...tormented in this flame." There is flame in Hell which torments but does not consume! Listen, in Matthew 10:28 Jesus said, "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." Hell is a literal place! In Mark 9 verses 44,46 and 48 Jesus said, "Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched." Of course all modern Bibles leave those verses out or change them. I wonder why? Then mentally Hell is a place of full awareness. You will remember everything and you will be completely aware of what is going on around you. This rich man remembered his brothers and recognized Lazarus and Abraham while he himself was in physical torment. He did not want his family to be there! You really do not want to go there!

They have been asked to introduce themselves, give a brief description of why they are running and tell us what they hope to accomplish if elected. A short question and answer period will follow. Please remember to bring new items this month for the House of Peace as well. Thank you so much to Larry Stuart for entertaining us last month. The guitar music was wonderful! It takes a lot to carry all of that equipment in and out. The effort was much appreciated. Next month we will be hav-

ing Diana Lawrence with the Troop Box Ministry. Also, each of us needs to come and share what we are thankful for this Thanksgiving season. Birthdays for October include Connie Durham, Jim Hanselman, Doris Johnson, Al Norris, Lillie (Itsy) Rice, Martha Sears, Bob Warner and Thelma Webster. There were no anniversaries this month. As always, prayers go out to those on the sick list, those who have had surgery, those who are living in nursing facilities, those families who have lost loves ones as well as those who are serving in the military on our behalf. Please keep our country in prayer as our election nears. We need to do our duty and privilege as citizens and vote. Remember that possibly four Supreme Court Justices could be nominated by the next President elect. These people could have profound effects on our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Please make the effort to vote. Hope to see you on October 26th. In the meantime, check on those who live alone, and be kind to one another. God bless you and your family.

Stay away from frightful investments CMYK

BY Nick Gray Halloween is almost here. When you’re passing out candy, you’ll see many “scary” costumes that will probably just make you smile. But in real life, you can easily find some things that truly are frightening – such as bad investment moves. • Chasing after “hot” stocks – Many so-called “experts” – not to mention your friends, neighbors, relatives and co-workers – are more than willing to provide you with “tips” on “hot” stocks. But by the time you hear about these stocks, they may already be cooling off – and, in any case, they may not have been appropriate for your needs in the first place. • Paying too much attention to today’s news – Unfortunately, many of the news items of today–or of any day–are more negative than positive. But as an investor, you don’t want to be forced into a “sky-is-

falling” mentality, because such a mind-set could lead you to make rash, unwise decisions, such as selling quality investments too soon or staying out of the market altogether. Generally, no single event has truly long-term consequences for investors. Consider the recent “Brexit” vote – in the immediate aftermath, the markets fell sharply, but just a few weeks later, they hit all-time highs. That won’t happen with every newsworthy occurrence, but historically, the markets have shown resilience. So stay invested and follow a smart, longterm investment strategy that’s suitable for your situation – and look beyond today’s headlines. Here are a few that you’ll want to avoid: • Investing too aggressively or too conservatively – If you constantly worry about the value of your investment portfolio, and you lose sleep whenever the market drops sharply, you might be taking on too

Ripley Federal merges with Southern Hills bank Southern Hills Community Bank of Leesburg and Ripley Federal Savings Bank of Ripley would like to announce the signing of a merger agreement between the two institutions. Each institution is known for its strong commitment to customer service and community involvement, and a merger gives each institution the opportunity to operate together in a larger area with a presence in both Highland and Brown counties. “Customers will enjoy the convenience of combined products and services as well as more branch locations while maintaining the same hometown service they are accustomed to. Our similar cultures will assist us in creating a strong, community-focused financial institution,” said Jeff Cloud, President and CEO of Southern Hills Community Bank. “Ripley Federal Savings Bank is excited about joining with Southern Hills Community Bank. They share the same goal of excellent customer service as Ripley Federal, and we look forward to this mutual partnership,” said Bill Geschwind, Chairman of

the Board of Ripley Federal. Michael Mussinan, President and CEO of Ripley Federal, said “Both banks have a long history of serving their communities. By coming together as one, it allows us to continue to offer the same exceptional products and services that customers of both banks have come to expect.” Following the completion of the merger, the combined bank will operate under Southern Hills Community Bank’s name with the main office located in Leesburg. Branch locations will be in Greenfield, Lynchburg, Ripley and Georgetown. The combined banks will have assets of approximately $150 million.

much risk for your own comfort – so you may need to invest somewhat less aggressively. Conversely, if you invest primarily in conservative, low-yielding investments because you think they will help you avoid losses, you might not achieve the long-term growth potential you need to help you reach your important financial goals, such as a comfortable retirement. When you invest, try to balance your need for growth with your personal tolerance for risk. • Ignoring opportunities – Are you taking full advantage of all the invest- ment opportunities available to you? For example, are you contributing as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan? If not, you are underutilizing one of the best retirement savings vehicles around. At a minimum, put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. You won’t always have the chance to partici-

pate in this type of tax-advantaged retirement plan – so make the most of it while it’s available. • Failing to diversify – If you only own one type of financial asset, and a market downturn hits that asset class strongly, your portfolio will likely take a big hit. You can greatly reduce the effects of market volatility – and give yourself more chances for success – by spreading your money among a range of investments. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification can’t always guarantee profits or protect against all losses.) Halloween usually ends with few tricks and many treats. Steering clear of the scary investment moves described above can help you make steady progress toward your financial objectives. Russellville Elementary gets $15K grant for playground improvements CMYK

B R O A D S H E E T

The playground at Russellville Elementary School is getting an upgrade thanks to the efforts of the 4th grade class. After nearly a year of work, the school will receive a $15,000 Let’s Play Community Construction Grant from the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group to expand the recreation area. According to RES Principal Katrina Wagoner, the effort began last year in the fourth grade classroom of teacher Amy Rau. “She was working with the kids about student ownership of the building and how to make a difference. They came up with some things they wanted to do to improve our school. They ranged from air fresheners in the bathroom to changing the mulch on the playground,” Wagoner said. “The biggest thing they wanted to do was extend the playground. The current playground is designed for kindergarten through second grade. There isn’t a lot out there

for the older kids to do, so we started exploring ways to do that.” Wagoner said the best part of the process was letting the students know that their work had paid off. “When Mrs. Rau told them that we hade gotten the grant, they were so excited. It empowered them.

Even though they are just 10 or 11 years old, they learned that they do have a voice and can make a difference if they work together,” Wagoner said. The school came up with another $9000 for a total of $25,000 that will be spent on a new playground structure and to expand size and

ground cover of the playground. The project is scheduled to be complete next spring before the school year ends. “We want the fifth graders to be able to enjoy it since they were the inspiration for it,” Wagoner said.

Perennial forage crop deadline changing USDA has announced a change to the acreage reporting deadline for Ohio’s perennial forage crop. The perennial forage crop must be reported by Nov. 15, 2016 for crop year 2017 and subsequent years. This is a major change from the previous

July 15th deadline. Producers must visit Farm Service Agency to validate and sign acreage reports, complete maps or provide program-specific information. The common data from the first-filed acreage report will now be available to pre-populate

and accelerate completion of the second report. In order to comply with FSA program eligibility requirements, all producers are encouraged to visit the Brown or Clermont County FSA office to file an accurate perennial forage crop certification re-

port by the Nov. 15th deadline. For an appointment or questions regarding crop certification and crop loss reports, please contact the Brown County FSA Office at (937) 378-6173 or the Clermont County FSA Office at (513) 732-2181.

New semester to begin at Chatfield

E V E N

A new semester at Chatfield College begins the week of January 17, 2017 and the college is now registering for Spring classes. The new schedule offers a variety of courses in business, computers, education, English, history, psychology, art, public speaking, and many more. During the 15-week semester, each class meets just once a week for 2 ½ hours, which makes it convenient for arranging classes around work

schedules or family responsibilities. The average class size is just 10-12 students, so students are able to easily engage in classroom discussion and receive personal attention from instructors. Financial aid is available for eligible students. Eligibility is determined by completing the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Once the FAFSA is complete, a financial aid award can be

determined. Staff members are available to assist students in completing the FAFSA. In addition to federal and state financial aid, Chatfield offers 29 endowed scholarships available only to Chatfield students. The deadline to apply for scholarships is Nov. 4, 2016. For more information, visit the website at www.chatfield.edu, call (513) 875-3344 or email admissions@chatfield.edu.

Lady Broncos earn 10th SBAAC American Division title in 11 years Successful season comes to close for Western Brown volleyball squad The Western Brown Lady Broncos will be adding one more Southern Buckeye Athletic/Academic Conference American Division volleyball championship award to their trophy case this fall after capturing the volleyball program's 10th league title in 11 years. This year's league crown didn't come easy for the Lady Broncos, as they were able to rise to the top of league standings in the final week of the regular season. After falling to the New Richmond Lady Lions earlier in the season, the Lady Broncos held the second spot in league standings until they were able to pin the New Richmond squad with its first league loss on Oct. 11 at New Richmond High School. The Oct. 11 win for Western Brown would put the Lady Broncos in a tie for first with New Richmond in league standings, both teams knotted at 8-1 in league play.

The Lady Broncos were at Amelia for their final match of the regular season on Oct. 13, claiming a victory in a match that lasted four sets to finish 9-1 in league play. The New Richmond Lady Lions ventured to Goshen on Oct. 13 for their final league match of the regular season, and it was the home-standing Lady Warriors pulling off a 3-2 match victory to mark the New Richmond team with its second league loss. With some help from the Goshen team, the Western Brown Lady Broncos were able to take sole possession of this year's league crown. “I am proud of the team how they have pulled together to finish as SBC champs,” said Western Brown head volleyball coach Carla Fite. “They have not given up and have worked hard to be in this position.” After staking claim to this year's league title, the Lady Broncos began play as the No. 6 seed in the Southwest District Division II Sectional Tournament at

Blanchester, where they would claim a round one victory over the No. 8 seed Blanchester Lady Wildcats in a match that lasted only three sets, but would fall to No. 3 seed Taylor in round two of the Blanchester sectional on Oct. 19 in a match that lasted four sets (25-12, 20-25, 30-28, 25-17). The Lady Broncos finished their season with an overall record of 17-6. The Oct. 19 sectional loss marked the end of high school volleyball careers for three Lady Bronco seniors – Bailie Darnall, Erin Bishop, and Kaitlyn Huseman. “The seniors have been a wonderful group to coach and will be missed next year,” said Fite. “Erin Bishop is not only a strong hitter but a smart hitter. She sees the court well and can place shots effectively. She also serves well under pressure and is always a positive player out on the court. Bailie Darnall leads the team in blocks and is very good at transitioning quickly from blocking to hitting. She is also effective

at picking up scrap balls along the net and has helped us this year in the back row with serve receive. Kaitlyn Huseman is a strong hitter for us in the middle. Being injured last year early in the season and again this year she has had limited varsity time. I am proud of her that she has stepped up to help her team finish strong at the end of the season her senior year.”

Despite the loss of some great seniors when looking ahead to next year, the Lady Broncos have a very bright future with several experienced players who will take the court as seniors next season. “The junior class is very strong and very coachable,” Fite said of this year's varsity squad. “Emily Cooper leads the team in assists, Tessa Pinkerton leads the

team in kills, and Mary Sizer leads the team in digs.” Pinkerton finished among the top 10 in Southwest Ohio in kills this season with a total of 297. Cooper finished the season with 701 assists among the top 15 in Southwest Ohio, and Sizer ranked among the top 10 in Southwest Ohio in digs with a total of 436.

Coming off a win over Manchester in week seven on the gridiron to clinch their second straight Ohio Valley Athletic League title, the Fayetteville-Perry Rockets claimed a victory over Jefferson Twp in week eight to up their overall record to 6-2.

it was a completed pass from quarterback Chris Wheeler to Austin Carter that was good for a 23-yard gain, moving the Tigers to the Broncos' 24-yard line. Another reception by Carter moved the Tigers to the Broncos' two-yard line, and from there it was Wheeler taking the quarterback sneak for Bethel's first touchdown of the night. After a failed attempt for the two-point conversion by the Tigers, the Broncos led 7-6 with 1:21 to go in the first period. The Broncos began their next drive around their own 49-yard line, and it was a five yard carry by junior running back Zach Stacy followed by a two-yard carry by Becker that put the Broncos at third down and three to go on the Bethel 44 yard line. Becker then completed a four-yard pass to Carson Eyre for a first down, moving the Broncos to the Bethel 40 yard line just before the first quarter came to a close. The Bronco offense returned to the field in the second quarter to continue its drive, and it was a 12yard reception by Stacy that would move them to the Tigers' 28 yard line and bring up a new set of downs. After an incomplete pass to bring up second down, it was Becker connecting with Taylor for a 28-yard touchdown reception. The kick attempt that followed was blocked, and with 11:30 to go in the second quarter it was Western Brown leading 13-6. Just over a minute later, the Tiger offense was held to fourth down and 16 yards to go at their own 38 yard line and brought the punt

team onto the field. After a bouncing snap, it was Western Brown's Eric Altman breaking through to block the punt, grab the loose ball, and make a clear run down the right side clear to the end zone to expand the Western Brown lead to 196. The Tigers then looked to Cooper, and the senior running back delivered. Held to third down at their own 46 yard line, it was Cooper breaking free for a 54 yard touchdown to cut the Broncos' lead to 19-12 with just under nine minutes to go in the first half. The Bronco offense responded with a 63 yard touchdown reception by Fischer and a successful two-point conversion attempt with a reception by Evan Luttrell to leave the Tigers trailing 27-12 with just over eight minutes to go in the first half. Following some big carries by Cooper and a pass interference penalty on the Broncos, the Tigers found themselves at second down and three yards to go at the Western Brown 16 yard line. The Tigers moved to the 11 yard line with an offsides penalty on the Bronco defense, and they would cap off the drive with an 11 yard touchdown carry by Cooper to slice the Bronco lead to 27-18. An interception by Bethel's Bradley Lewis brought the Tiger offense back on the field with 5:33 to go and only 19 yards from pay dirt. From there, it was a 12-yard carry by Owen Holtke that moved the Tigers to the Broncos' seven-yard line. Cooper capped off the short Tiger drive with a seven-yard touchdown carry. Cooper

The Rockets will wrap up their regular season schedule with a couple of tough non-league opponents, Notre Dame (6-2) and Bishop Ready (5-3). The Rockets were scheduled to be on their home field for their final two weeks of the regular season. The Western Brown Broncos were on the road for week eight on the gridiron Oct. 14, venturing to Bethel-Tate High School with hopes of bringing home their third victory of the season and their first win on the road. In a high scoring first half the two teams would find themselves knotted at 34 apiece going into halftime break, but it was the Broncos coming out to dominate the second half to nab a 48-34 non-league win, upping their overall record to 3-5. After recovering an onside kick to start the game, the Bethel-Tate Tigers marched to the Western Brown two-yard line on their first drive of the night, but that's as close as they would come to pay dirt on their first possession of the game, being held to fourth and goal and later being forced into a turnover on downs with the Broncos holding sturdy on defense to hold Bethel running back Steven Cooper shy of the end zone on a carry. The Bronco offense came out ready for their first drive of the night. A carry by Western Brown's junior quarterback Seth Becker, followed by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against the Tigers, moved the Broncos to their own 33 yard-line. A five-yard reception by Jacob Daniel and a 15-yard reception by junior Wyatt Fischer moved the Broncos into Tiger territory 47 yards from pay dirt. From there, Becker connected with sophomore receiver Josh Taylor for a 47-yard touchdown. With Lane Sexton's successful kick for the extra point, the Broncos held a 7-0 lead with 6:03 to go in the first quarter. The Tiger offense was once again held shy of the end zone in their next drive of the night, and it was Fischer breaking up a pass to the end zone on fourth down to force another turnover on downs to bring the Western Brown offense on the field to start their next drive at their own 24yard line, but would later be forced to punt on fourth down after being held to minimal yardage by the Tiger defense. The Tigers would start their next drive at the Western Brown 47-yard line, and

ran in the two-point conversion attempt that followed, and the Tigers had cut the Bronco lead to just one, 2726, with 5:21 to go in the first half. A 56 yard touchdown reception by Fischer, followed by Sexton's kick for the extra point, expanded the Broncos' lead to 34-26 with just over three minutes to go in the first half. The Tiger offense began its final drive of the first half at their own 48 yard line, but a short loss would bring up third down and 12 to go. With 2:15 left on the clock in the second period, it was Cooper pulling down a reception and cruising down the field for a 54-yard touchdown. Wheeler then made his way to the end zone to complete the twopoint conversion, and the Tigers were able to tie the game at 34 apiece. The two teams remained knotted at 34 after a scoreless third quarter. The Broncos capped off a 73 yard drive with a 10 yard touchdown carry by Becker, followed by Sexton's kick for the extra point, to take a 41-34 lead with 10:13 to go in the fourth quarter. The Bronco defense keyed in on Cooper in the second half after the senior racked up more than 170 rushing yards off 16 carries in the first half of play, and Cooper would take just over a handful of carries in the second half. The Broncos capped off the victory by finishing off a fourth quarter drive with a short touchdown run by Becker. Sexton once again made good on the extra point attempt, sealing a 14point win for Western Brown. “It was a hard fought victory,” said Western Brown head coach Don Sizer during a post game interview. “We knew Bethel was going to be physical and really sound, and that's what we got tonight. We're not lucky to come out with a win, but we're thrilled.” The Tigers totaled 440 yards of offense competed to the Broncos' 557 yards. Becker completed 25-of40 pass attempts for 377 passing yards and four touchdowns. Becker also took 17 carries for 120 yards. Fischer led Bronco receivers with 204 yards off 11 receptions, two of them touchdown receptions. Taylor pulled down three receptions for 91 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Western Brown's Noah Hill, Kennedy Sizemore, and Logan Elswick all recorded sacks on defense, while Luttrell had one interception and Jake Henderson two interceptions. The Tigers dropped to a 4-4 overall record with the week eight loss to the Broncos and are scheduled to face Blanchester on the road in week nine, Oct. 21. The Broncos will move on to face 7-1 Norwood in a league bout on the road Oct. 21 and host Goshen for their final league game of the regular season on Oct. 28, coming off wins over Amelia and BethelTate. “We have two really good opponents over the next two weeks,” said Sizer.

County of Brown REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL FOR BANKING SERVICES (ORC 135.33) The County of Brown, Georgetown, Ohio, hereby invites banking institutions that maintain a full service banking office(s) within the territorial limits of the County of Brown to submit proposals for the required depository and banking services agreement contained herein. It is the intent of the County of Brown to select one banking institution to provide basic banking services. However, the County of Brown may award some services to more than one banking institution. A written proposal must be submitted in a sealed envelope marked “Proposal for Banking Services” to the Brown County Board of Commissioners, 800 Mt. Orab Pike, Suite 101, Georgetown, Ohio 45121 no later than 10:00 a.m. on November 28, 2016. The proposals will be opened and read aloud at that time. The Board of Commissioners will meet on November 30, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. to designate one or more eligible institutions as public depositories. The depository agreement will be for a term of four (4) years commencing on December 31, 2016 and ending on December 31, 2020. Each banking institution must submit a per unit charge for the required banking services on page one (1) of the Bid Forms (pages 1-7) which must be completed and submitted with the written proposal. The total monthly service charge fees will NOT be the sole determining factor in designating a depository for banking services for the County of Brown. The criteria for evaluating the request for proposal will be based upon a combination of: 1. The quality and extent of services to be provided to the County of Brown. 2. Service charge fees for services to be provided to the County of Brown. 3. The formula used in calculating the interest earnings for the County of Brown. 4. The cash management proposal. 5. Background and experience of the banking institution to provide quality services to like public entities will be considered in evaluating the proposal for banking services. The financial institutions desiring to provide banking or investment services for the County of Brown shall provide the following: 1. Quarterly verification of pooled collateral as of the close of business on the last banking business day of March, June, September, and December. The verification of the pooled collateral will be copies of the collateral pool as provided by the trustee banks. No bank may verify their own pooled collateral. 2. Annual and quarterly financial reports showing the profit and loss of the bank and their latest published report of condition as submitted to the Comptroller of Currency or the Superintendent of Banks. The County of Brown will follow the practice of competitively bidding and investing its excess funds. Said investment(s) will be awarded to the banking institution offering to pay the highest rate of interest calculated on a 365 day basis for the actual number of days. The financial institution shall furnish the name, title and telephone number of the bank officer(s) or employee(s) assigned to the account(s) of the County of Brown. The County of Brown reserves the right to reject any or all proposals, and to accept the proposal the County of Brown considers to be most advantageous to the County of Brown and not necessarily the lowest service charges for the banking services.
