Along with the time change, we are also preparing for a change in the weather. It may take a while to adjust to the time since it seems to switch just as we begin to adjust to the previous time shift. Just as we have to adjust our daily schedules, we also have to adjust our management plans for our cattle. The cooler temperatures can pose many risks for cattle ranging from nutritional deficiencies, health concerns and parasite control. It is important to be proactive on issues such as the quality and quantity of forages available to avoid the consumption of poisonous plants. However, fall time is when most begin thinking about lice control, but is this the most effective timing of treatment? I recently found some information on our OSU BEEF Cattle Letter that explains how an early fall treatment may not be the best option. Lice populations are lower during warmer months. Cattle are also more effective at limiting lice population during summer months due to their ability to use their tongue to lick the lice from the thin,
slick haircoat. However, as we move into the winter months, the haircoat builds up and so does the lice population. The combination of cooler weather and a thicker haircoat, lice populations can explode. You can reduce your chance of an outbreak by waiting
JAMES MORRIS
OSU EXTENSION EDUCATOR until the start of winter when the haircoat thickens before treating for lice. When the winter outbreak occurs, we often think our fall treatment was ineffective because the lice are simply surviving in the bedding or the treatment was ineffective due to the lice developing a resistance to the product. W. Mark Hilton of Purdue University states that it is a possibility that lice can develop resistance, but we do not have a definite answer at this time. It’s also important to remember that there are two types of lice that cattle can get: chewing/biting lice and
sucking lice. Our Beef Newsletter also states “If you deworm your cattle with an injectable macrocyclic lactone or ivermectin-type product, you should also pour your cattle with a lice control product. These injectable products are very good at controlling the sucking lice, but lack effectiveness against the chewing lice. Any newly purchased animals should be poured for lice and quarantined from the herd for 30 days. When you use a pour-on product for lice control, be sure to apply it from the poll to the tailhead. If the product is just splashed on the neck and shoulders, lice away from this area have an excellent chance to move even farther away from the product and survive. If you pour from the poll to the tailhead, your chance of success is much greater. Some lice-control products need two doses to be effective. Read the label to see if you need one dose or two, and always follow label directions.” More information and other articles can be found at u.osu.edu/beef.

Members of 4-H Team Havoc and the Sherriffs Department after the match.
4-H students challenge Brown County Sheriff’s Office BY Christy Clary It isn’t every day you get to challenge the Sheriff to a competition, but for the second year the Brown County 4-H Shooting Sports Team Havoc did just that. On Saturday October 20th, six members of the Brown County Sheriff’s Department and 14 members of Team Havoc competed in a Steel Challenge Shooting Competition. The Steel Challenge is a speed and accuracy competition that members of Team Havoc participate in throughout the year. They attend state and national matches and compete against other youth in a series of four stages. For the competition with the Sheriff’s department, each participate completed two of the stages the youth shoot in regular competition. Bill Dunning, coach of Team Havoc and a member of the Sheriff’s department organized the event. Dunning said, “I think it is just a good way to connect these two groups in a positive light. These are good kids, and they get to share what they are doing and show off a little. But they also get to
meet members of law enforcement in a positive setting.” The morning started with a safety briefing and instructions for the match, led by Dunning. Dunning incorporated the youth into the briefing by asking questions and having them answer and explain. Throughout the event, parents and volunteers assisted, but as much as possible the kids ran the event, organizing materials and serving as timers. Members of Team Havoc completed the stages first, shooting a series of five steel plates set up in two different configurations. This allowed the Sheriff’s department to observe, and also learn the course of fire. While everyone was respectful, good natured ribbing occurred throughout. As the deputies and sheriff observed the kids, comments were made about “what is the age handicap on time?” More often than not, the deputies wanted confirmation on exactly how fast the time was for the last shooter and were impressed by the skill and professionalism of the 4H’ers. At the end of the event,
times were averaged to determine which team completed each stage the fastest. Team Havoc was victorious for the second year in a row, completing both stages with a faster average time then the sheriff’s department. Sheriff Ellis had nothing but complements for the 4-H members who competed mentioning how respectful the kids were, but also how talented and dedicated he could tell they were. “It takes a lot of practice to be able to shoot the way these kids are shooting” said Ellis. Brown County 4-H Shooting Sports teaches positive youth development through the use of firearms and archery equipment. Youth participate in discipline specific meetings with certified instructors to learn the basics of responsibly using a firearm. Those who have completed the basic pistol and rifle program are eligible to move on to advanced opportunities and participate on Team Havoc. If you are interested in learning more about the Brown County 4-H program and the Shooting Sports program, please contact the OSU Extension Office at 937-378-6716.
Celebration of Lights Celebration The Brown County Health & Wellness Foundation is planning the Annual Celebration of Lights for Friday evening, November 30, at 6:00 PM at the Brown County Fairgrounds in Georgetown. The Celebration of Lights has been held for several years, and this is the fourth year the Foundation has held the event at the Brown County Fairgrounds. Individuals and families sponsor trees in memory of loved ones who have passed away or in honor of loved ones still with us. Those who purchase trees make a gift to the Brown County Health & Wellness Foundation of one-hundred
dollars. Signs are placed in front of each tree to indicate in whose memory or honor the tree is named. The Foundation will also be selling luminaries for $10 each in memory or in honor of loved ones. The luminaries will be lit the evening of November 30th. The program will include special music by the Christian Theatre for Children and the reading of the names of those who are remembered and honored. The lights on the trees will be on each evening throughout the holiday season. The Brown County Health & Wellness Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation with its own
Board of Trustees. Previous gifts to the Foundation have been used to place AED’s (automated external defibrillators) in every law enforcement vehicle in use in Brown County, in every school system and in other public buildings where there is a high risk of cardiac failure. Other funds have provided scholarships to Brown County students who are in training in different health care areas. Gifts have also helped to provide dental education to area fourth grade students. If you would like further information or to purchase trees or luminaries, please contact Teri Baumann at (937) 546-9766 no later than November 26th.
