Southern State Community College Professor Lonnie Griffith recently invited Brown County Probate/Juvenile Court Judge Danny Bubp to speak to his College Credit Plus students at Western Brown High School for his U.S. Government class. Bubp talked about the importance of voting. During the class Bubp talked to the kids about the three branches of government, term limits, duties of members of Congress, local candidates and their responsibilities. Throughout the class he asked the students questions about their future plans and how important they feel the upcoming election is to them. Only one student in the class was actually old enough to vote. He also discussed the electorial college and the importance of the U.S. Supreme Court.

My colleagues here at the Brown County Press are good cooks and bakers. Frances Pope is one of them, and she loves pumpkin desserts. Along with baking pumpkin cookies for her kids, Frances makes this delicious, moist pumpkin bread. “It’s from Libby’s pumpkin”, Frances told me. Here’s my slight adaptation. FRANCES POPE’S PUMPKIN BREAD 1 can pumpkin puree (2 cups) 1 cup vegetable oil 2/3 cup water 4 eggs 3-1/2 cups all purpose flour 3 cups sugar 2 teaspoons baking soda 1-1/2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon Preheat oven to 350. Grease and flour three 8-1/2x41/2x2-1/2 inch loaf pans. In large bowl, stir together pumpkin, oil, water and eggs. Stir together flour, sugar, baking soda, salt and cinnamon; gradually add to pumpkin mixture, stirring until well blended. Bake 45-50 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans to wire racks. Cool completely. COUNTRY KITCHEN WISDOM

Whether you’re inviting friends over after your kids’ football game, or watching the professionals play on TV, having an easy to make and tasty snack is as important as having the winning team! GAME DAY NACHOS 1 bag tortilla chips 2 cans black beans, or chili ready beans 2 large tomatoes 1 bunch green onions, sliced thin 8 oz. shredded Mexican blend cheese Sour cream 2 ripe avocados, chopped Preheat oven to 375° F. Arrange tortilla chips on an oven safe platter or cookie sheet. Drain and mash the black beans. Chop the tomatoes fairly small. Top tortilla chips with the black beans, tomatoes, onions and cheese. Bake for 5-10 minutes, or until cheese is melted. Scatter the avocado over the nachos, drizzle with sour cream and serve. COUNTRY KITCHEN WISDOM • Use your favorite cheese. • Sprinkle with a small amount of cayenne pepper flakes for a spicy taste. • If preparing avocados ahead, sprinkle with lime or lemon juice to keep from turning brown. Local DAR celebrates birthday with service to Brown County

October 11th marks the 126th anniversary of the founding of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. The Ripley-Lieutenant Byrd Chapter, in following the Ohio Society DAR’s Theme of “sowing seeds of service, outreach, and love” baked cookies and cupcakes for local law enforcement and first responders in appreciation for their service to our community. Cookies were delivered by members to the Ripley Police Department and the Brown County Sheriff’s Office. Cupcakes were delivered to the Georgetown Post of the Ohio State Patrol to thank them for all they do every day to keep our communities safe. To learn more about the

Christmas Craft Show
The Altar Society of St. Mary’s Church, 3398 State Route 133 in Bethel will be holding their annual Christmas Craft Show, Friday, November 11th from 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 12 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Gift basket bid-n-buy bids close at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and the winning bidder does not have to be present. The show will be held at the Fr. Lewis Center located on site. The show will feature handcrafted gift and Christmas items, made from wood, cloth, etc. and in-
cludes items such as jewelry, wreaths and unique one-of-a-kind gifts. A 50 Cent Grab Bag table, Bake Sale and a Thanksgiving Dinner raffle will also be taking place during the show. The ladies of the Altar Society will sponsor a homemade bake sale with a wide variety of homemade sandwiches, soups, chili and desserts being served throughout both days. Carry out for lunch and supper available as well. Plan to join us for Christmas shopping, food, fun and fellowship!
