MONEY
Mark 8:36: “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Jesus is talking about a profit and loss here. We are all concerned about profit, are we not? We want to profit; we do not want to lose. We work, we learn, we get education so that we can make a little more money than we would have other wise. This life is all about that kind of thing, isn’t it? Of course, society benefits if the people have manners, etiquette, and education. That is all good stuff; but mainly we go for higher education for no other reason but to get better pay. We want our children to go to college so they can get better jobs and earn more money so that they have it better than Mom and Dad. Am I wrong? I like money alright; I am definitely not against it. There probably isn’t anyone reading this that doesn’t like money. In fact, we need money in this old world if we are to have anything. However, we must be careful not to get overly fond of it because the Bible tells us in I Timothy 6:10: “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” It is not the money that is bad for us; it is the love of it that gets us. When we begin to covet money, that becomes the problem. Many times that verse is misquoted. They say that money is the root of all evil. It is the lust of money that is the root of all evil. There is nothing wrong with money itself. It is just an exchange. You work, you get paid, and then you can buy something. But, understand this; money is not the main thing! There is something that money can not buy which is by far more important than the money. Again I say, Mark 8:36 is talking about profit and loss. We think of profit as gaining and loss as losing only financially but Jesus is asking: “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Still, money is the first thing we think of when it comes to doing something, even something for God. We want to hold on to it as long as we can. Look at the rich young ruler that Jesus met over in Mark 10:17. He asked Jesus: “...Master,
DR. CHARLES SMITH
MT. ORAB BIBLE BAPTIST CHURCH WWW.BBMTORAB.COM
what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?” Jesus knew what his problem was; he knew that the young man was rich and had put his confidence in money. Therefore, Jesus told him to sell everything that he had, give it to the poor, and follow Him. The young man turned like a whipped pup and went on his way. You see, he had great riches and was not willing to let go of them. His money was worth more to him than eternal life in heaven with Jesus. He was not the only one that thought that way. Listen, there are people today, all over America, with the same problem; they love their money more than their soul and they just can not let go of the money, not even a little bit of it. In fact, they not only put their money ahead of their soul but they put their money ahead of God! That is when it becomes a sin and they have let the root of evil grow in their lives. What shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and lose his soul? Nothing; he can not take his gain with him and his soul is something that money can not buy. Now pay attention, love does carry lust with it, so you have to be careful. The love of money is the lust for it. Don’t let it become more important than God and the things of God. God gives us the ability to make money and 10% of what we make belongs to Him. If you do not give it to Him, you are robbing God and it has become more important than God to you. For a Christian that is very bad. For an unsaved person that puts money before his soul, well, that costs him eternal life in Heaven and gains him eternal life in Hell. How important to him will his money be there? Christian, don’t let money be a stumbling block in your service to God. Lost person, don’t let it be one in your gateway to Heaven.
