Top stories of 2019 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 corn, this week we are at 68 percent of corn planted. (In 2018) we were at 100 percent at this time,” Morris said. “For soybeans, we are at 46 percent planted, with 2018 numbers and the five year average being 94 percent.” 3. Georgetown Election Issues A contentious debate about funding emergency services in Georgetown was settled at the ballot box in November. The effort to reduce the local fire and EMS evy l failed by a vote of 580 to 399. “On behalf of the entire fire and EMS department, full time, part time and volunteers, I would like to thank the citizens of Georgetown for their vote of confidence,” said Georgetown Fire Chief Joey Rockey at the time of the election. “We will continue to provide professional service to you as we do our best to spend the tax money you entrust to us wisely.” Georgetown incumbent mayor Dale Cahall won reelection over challenger Mike Mays, and incumbent council member Ginny Colwell was reelected. She will be joined on council by challenger Forrest “Buddy” Coburn. Georgetown residents also voted to explore writing a village charter and elected 15 members to a commission to begin that process. Voters in Ripley shot down a five mill levy intended to fix problems with water infrastructure in the village. The vote was almost two to one against passing the levy, with 305 voting against and 171 voting in favor. The village had hoped to raise approximately $115,000 per year for the water fund in order to repair water mains and reduce complaints about water quality. 4. Hemp Planting Legalized Governor Mike DeWine signed Senate Bill 57 into law on July 30, which opened the door to hemp production in the state.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture still must create a certification process for farmers and other regulations before the crop can be legally produced. “Details on how this process will operate are currently being worked out, along with the rules and regulations regarding the cultivation and processing of hemp. The goal is to have farmers licensed and able to plant the crop by spring of 2020,” according to a page on the ODA website devoted to the hemp issue. The ODA said that farmers will have to obtain a license to grow hemp and that licenses will also be required for hemp processors and some research facilities. “If this turns out to be as profitable as some stories say it is and if we get the production figured out and get the right varieties adapted to our soils, it will be a tremendous benefit to the county,” said James Morris, Community Development Educator, OSU Extension Service said in August. 5. Farm Census numbers released The 2017 USDA Farm Census numbers revealed that Brown County now has 1237 active farms, down from 1379 in 2012 at the time of the last census. But while the numbers of farms has dropped, the average size of the farms that remain continues to grow. In 2017, the average farm size in Brown County was 168 acres, up from 150 acres in 2012. In fact, there are more acres being farmed in Brown County today than in 2012, according to the USDA. The total acres farmed in Brown County for the 2017 census was 207, 957. That is an increase over the 206, 446 acres in 2012. The value of the farmland continues to increase as well. The average price per acre in 2017 was $4408. That is up from $3602 in 2012. In 1987, the average price per acre was $1036. In 1974, it was $604, and in 1930, you could buy an acre of farmland for $36.38. The num-

ber of farms has been consistently shrinking in Brown County for over 100 years as the average size keeps growing. 6. “The best fair in years” The 2019 Brown County Fair had the highest gate receipts in over a decade, thanks to great weather. As opposed to the 2018 fair that was one of the wettest on record, the 2019 fair took place mostly under clear skies. The fair kicked off on Monday, Sept. 23 with a parade from Georgetown Junior Senior High School through town to the fairgrounds. Almost 150 entries kept parade watchers entertained while kids caught bags full of candy. Once the parade arrived at the fairgrounds, the next big event was the 2019 Fair King and Queen Contest. When the results from the judges were in, the fourth runner up was Kathryn Dugan, third runner up was Regan Gable, second runner up was Elizabeth Meranda, the first runner up was Katelyn Cowdrey. Caitlyn Wills was named the 2019 Brown County Fair Queen. On the King’s Court, fourth runner up was Trace Dyer, third runner up was Jarrett Ingle, second runner up was Pierce Schadle, and first runner up was Christian Manning. Jeremy Ackley was named as the 2019 Brown County Fair King. Also at the king and queen contest, Bill and Teri Dunning were named as the 2019 Friends of 4-H and the late Cathy Griffith, a 45 year supporter of 4-H who passed away in April, received the 4-H Alumni Award. Family members accepted on her behalf. Also honored was the late Juanita Barricklow, who was secretary of the Brown County Agricultural Society for 17 years and ran the Royalty and Industry Ambassador departments at the fair. Barricklow passed away in January of 2019. 7. Sheriff Ellis deploys to the middle east Brown County Sheriff Gordon Ellis left in early May for an estimated nine month deployment in the middle east. Ellis serves as a two star,

A uctions

or Major General, in the U.S. Army Reserve and commands the 38th Infantry Division of the Indiana National Guard. Ellis and the 38th will be part of Operation Spartan Shield. He is leading approximately 15,000 other military members in the middle east. “Operation Spartan Shield provides command of U.S. forces in the Arabian Peninsula which includes seven countries. We conduct partnered exercises with Allies to increase operational capacity and conduct operations to deter regional aggression,” said Ellis. The sheriff is not be taking a county salary while deployed overseas. Ellis said he has spoken to the Brown County Commissioners about having his salary be used to help operate the sheriff’s office while he is deployed. When asked last January what he would like to say to Brown County citizens, Ellis thanked them for their support. “The strength that drives all of us who are deployed is the thought of our family members and our communities at home. This is why we go. I appreciate the support and the strength that we draw from the citizens where we live,” he said. 8. Stanley Plant to close The Stanley Black and Decker plant in Georgetown announced in July that it would be shutting down as of November 1. That closing was later delayed to the Spring of 2020. Georgetown Mayor Dale Cahall said at the time that he was disappointed to hear the news. “It’s devastating to a small community the size of Georgetown. When 100 jobs leave a community of about 4400 people, that’s a lot of employment loss,” he said. Cahall said that the strong national economy may be able to help Georgetown overcome the loss. “The economy is in pretty good shape and employment is sky high. I don’t think there will be a long period of time that the building is unoccupied. I would have to think that someone would be interested in it,” he said. Efforts are underway at the local level to find a buyer for the plant once operations end there. 9. Georgetown turns 200 The Village of Georgetown celebrated its 200th birthday in June. One of the main events was the opening of the sesquicentennial time capsule from 1969 on June 23 at Bicentennial Park on the square. Dr. Curt Fields also returned to Georgetown as famous resident Ulysses S. Grant. The celebration ran for four days from June 20 to June 23 and included a parade, fireworks, concerts on the square, historical characters and reenactments and walking tours of the village. 10. Night to Shine 2019 It was a “Night to Shine” once again on Feb. 8 for some Brown County residents who made the most of their time in the spotlight. The Tim Tebow Foundation sponsored the annual event which allowed developmentally disabled guests to feel like a king or queen for a few hours. The participants were treated to a day of pampering by the Cosmetology students at Southern Hills Career and Technical Center before they hit the red carpet at the Georgetown Church of Christ. There, they entered one by one to applause from those gathered to watch the grand entrance making their way to the church gym for a meal prepared and served by volunteers. After the meal, they hit the dance floor to bust a move or two and then each one was crowned as a king or queen. A similar event is planned for this year as well.

2020 Recycling Calendars Attention all Brown County curbside recyclers. Did you know that you can now join our email list for your 2020 curbside calendars? This year we will be offering the paperless option to reduce our paper output. One key factor that Adams Brown Recycling stresses is reducing the material that we use. Help us reduce our paper mailing by joining the email list. All you have to do is call into Adams Brown Recycling with your name, home address, and email at 937.378.3431 ext. 104, or email us at

wlawhorn@abcap.net. If you prefer the mailing list your calendar will be mailed to you as usual and you do not need to call, unless your mailing address needs updated. (Same number as above) We are also reducing our mailings this year by not mailing to the village of Georgetown. Georgetown residents who would like to request a calendar may obtain one in three different ways: call the office and request a mailed version, join the email list, or visit our website at browncountywaste.org to print a digital copy.
