Mt. Orab Auto Mall collects over 1,100 canned goods for local families BY Martha B. Jacob The Mt. Orab Auto Mall has joined with the Peebles High School National Honor Society in a canned food drive and has collected over 1,100 canned goods. The items were delivered to the schools on Wednesday, Nov. 30. Some of the items will also be donated to Western Brown High School to help kick off its food drive. Each of the schools will see that the food items go to needy families. According to Mike Carmichael, general manager at Mt. Orab Auto Mall, it was his wife Katie who came up with the idea to be a part of the event. “My wife, who actually does marketing for us, is the brainchild of all this effort,” Carmichael said with a smile, “Katie, along with Caylah Baldwin made all this happen and we are very happy with our efforts.
We’ve never done this before, but we’re keen on anything like this that’s community oriented.” Carmichael said that last year when plans to build the auto mall first began, he knew then that he wanted the business to be a big part of the Brown County Fair, and it was. He said he enjoyed SummerFest as well as the malls grand opening which drew over 15,000 people. “Everybody had a real blast at our grand opening,” he said. “It was an all day event and we had so much fun that day. It was a lot of work but a lot of fun, especially with the fireworks. According to Katie Carmichael the Auto Mall is planning an Open House coming up on Dec. 17. “We have invited Santa to join us at our Open House,” said Katie Carmichael. “We want this Open House event to be something kids will remem-

ber for a long time. We want it to be different from other Santa visits, like the ones at the shopping malls. This will be a ‘close to home’ visit with Santa and include games and all kinds of activities for the kids.” She continued, “We are excited that Butterbees Restaurant will be serving hot chocolate to the kids and some of the local schools will have kids singing Christmas carols for entertainment. It should be great fun for everyone, and we want to invite everyone to come join us.” Carmichael said that beginning on Thursday, Dec. 1, the Mt. Orab Auto Mall will have a ‘Giving Tree’ especially for our local Veterans. Names along with a little information about the Veteran will be placed on a card which can be taken off the Giving Tree.

Troop Box Ministries continues to receive support from all over Brown County and beyond according to one of the coordinators of Troop Box Ministries, Diana Lawrence. “We are so thankful for our beautiful fall weather we have had here in the Ohio Valley,” Lawrence said in her October Newsletter. “This month has again been very busy and we here at Troop Box Ministry appreciate all the help we’ve received.” Lawrence said that her ministry received some special help from five Airmen from Wright Patterson
Air Force Base, who helped prepare packages to be sent out to American service men and women. She said that last week over 400 packages were sent out. It was a busy meeting Nov. 7 of members of the H.E.R.O. Tribute group as they begin organizing the upcoming visit of the Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall to Brown County next year. It was noted at the meeting that it has been exactly one year to the day, that the campaign to bring the wall to Brown County had begun. Bill Graybill, chairman of H.E.R.O. Tribute, said the generosity for businesses and individuals in Brown County has been overwhelming. Since the first day of its inception, the H.E.R.O. Tribute Committee hit the ground running organizing fundraisers to generate enough money to bring the Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall to
Brown County by 2017. Now it is set in stone, and will be set up at the Brown County Fairgrounds on Thursday, May 11 to Sunday, May 14, 2017. “Checks and donations of all kinds continue to come in for this event,” Graybill said. “We had a list of all the extra events that come along with the traveling wall and we’ve raised enough money to have all the extras. What a great event this going to be.” In addition to the Wall visitors can enjoy bagpipers, daily cannon firing, Eyes of Freedom at the Merchants building, “Through, Steele Soldiers, therapy involved horses and a Master Modeler display about WWI.” Graybill said that Susi Lynch, owner of Susi Q’s Place, in Felicity recently

2017 dog tags now on sale

It’s dog tag season again in Brown County. Tags went on sale December 1 and will remain on sale through January 31. A one year tag will cost $14, a three year tag will cost $42 and a lifetime tag will cost $140. “A lifetime tag can be a good investment for the owner of a young dog because owners would never have to worry about the tag again,” said Brown County Auditor Jill Hall. The revenue raised by dog tag sales goes to the Brown County Humane Society to operate the local animal shelter, minus 7.5 percent to cover administrative expenses.
Hall said the price of not buying a dog tag can turn out to be pretty steep. “By Ohio Revised Code, as of February 1 if you are caught without a dog tag, the cost doubles to $28. Plus, the dog warden can give you a ticket for up to $140 per dog,” Hall said. “The dog warden will also sometimes go door to door checking for tags, so it makes more sense just to buy a tag so you don’t have to worry about it.” Hall said another benefit to the tags is the quick return of a tagged dog if it happens to get lost. “We’ve had multiple calls this year of someone finding a dog and not knowing where it came from. We can look up the

Charter Schools: A good alternative
Dear Editor, Christopher Burrows’, Superintendent of GEVS, letter to the editor which was published in the Brown County Press on November 27, 2016 is filled with missing leading information, and is mean spirited and does a disservice to parents, children and the educational system of Ohio. I praise God that Ohio has a rich legacy in education and a vibrant school choice system. I am a parent of high school senior who has been attending the Ohio Virtual Academy, OHVA, from kindergarten. OHVA is an at home public school funded by the Ohio charter school system. OHVA has about 9,700 students state wide and spends $6,787 per student per year. Chris Burrows’ plea to end funding of charters schools from local taxpayers is totally inaccurate and irresponsible. I did has he suggested and called our State Representative, Doug Green, and Doug verified for me that currently no local taxes are used to fund charters school and that the educational funds from the state follow the student. This means that the local school districts receive 100% of the local taxes within that school district and the school district receives state funds for each student enrolled. Currently according to the Ohio Department of Education’s web site the GEVS spends $7,646 per student and the source of those funds are 18.9% local, 61.1% state, 11% federal and 9.1% from other sources. The source of OHVA charter school funds are 0% local, 81.9% state, 17.6% federal and 0.5% other sources. In Ohio parents have several choices in education, they can choose between public, private or homeschool. Within the public school
option there are choices of the traditional “neighborhood school” like GEVS, open enrollment where you can attended a school in a different school district than your residence, careertech schools and charter schools. If a parent chooses an option other than the neighborhood school then the local school district doesn’t receive any state funds for that student but they still receive 100% of the local tax dollars. Also, they don’t have any responsibility for that child’s education. All educational options have their benefits and problems but the primary issue at stake is who get to decides what is the best educational solution for our children; their parents, local school district superintendent or the state government? The responsibility and decision of a child’s education belongs to the parents. This fundamental principle is well established in God’s word and the founding documents of the United States of America. I know that Chris Burrows is well aware of problems with traditional schools because I have personally talked with him several years ago about a situation where a teacher was violating the religious rights of student. I was impressed that he agreed to meet with me and discuss the issue but I am not impressed with his position on school choice. School choice may have its problems but it is far better than the alternative. As a society to all need to work together to find better solutions for education. We need to fix what doesn’t work and celebrate what does. Mr. Burrows claims there is no accountability with the on-line charter schools and that isn’t true. The on-line public school at home requires the par-
ents to track their child’s actual hours daily and they must log a minimum of 920 hours per year, the student must complete their daily lessons via the online software which tracks their progress, they must attend face to face meetings, daily on-line classes with an assigned teacher, personal meetings with parents & students by phone or on-line class connects, and the teachers communicate by emails and feedback surveys. Also, the on-line students are required to take all the same state tests at a testing site the same way all other public school students do. On-line public schools require a lot of work for both parents & students. The at home public school option has been a wonderful experience for my daughter, she will graduate June 3, 2017 from high school in the top 1% of her class and she will also graduate from Chatfield College with an associate’s degree through the Ohio College Credit Plus Program. I strongly urge our entire community to pray for God to give us wisdom about our education system in American and get involved and encourage children to take their education serious. “Alright, we’ll cut this one!” Everyone cheered! At home, that afternoon, bringing our first big bertha tree through the door of our new farmhouse, was like threading a camel through the eye of a needle. She was so much bigger than we had thought. In the great outdoors she looked a fraction of her size. Trying to fit her through the door was almost impossible, unless you have men who want to watch the sporting event of the day. Then look out. It will fit! With one ginormous push and pull from all the guys, the tree went plowing through the door and thousands of pine needles departed their lovely branches like a winter’s snowfall. Everywhere the needles scattered once again as they impelled her through another doorway like a missal. Finally in her destination of the music room, standing her up, as you guessed, she was way too tall. Down and up, two cuts later and several “turn it to the left, now to the right, and not so much…” we settled. The chili from the crock-pot was a delicious idea. Afterwards, we girls decorated singing along with Christmas songs playing on the radio and belted out those we grew up singing at the piano— like “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,” a big hit in the sixties. As nightfall came, we turned down the house lights and all gazed at the illuminated tree. It was beautiful, just as I had imagined it would be. And this week, all those memories flooded my mind and moistened my eyes remembering the family memory created back in the days of my youth, 1999, while decorating the tree. The holiday season is upon us. Friends, family, food, Christmas music and movies during the season of giving make it merry and bright. Our tree, like many, went up right after Thanksgiving. Mine is a beautiful, artificial one this year, though in years past it has been a real tree. The first tree husband Jeff and I had in 1975 was a six-foot artificial one, like those you see at the dollar store. It was very special—our first as a married couple. I still have a picture of me standing next to it almost as tall as it! By today’s standards it wasn’t all that. Know what I mean? But it was ours. And it was perfect. One year, many decades of years forward, we were to be hosting Christmas Eve at our new farmhouse, so I decided our family should participate in cutting a live tree. Everyone was all in. Several weeks before Christmas, we gathered at our farm to “go get the tree” and return to decorate it. A crockpot of chili was simmering for our return. Heading out, we loaded up in several trucks and caravanned to the tree farm. The tree farm’s barn had live animals, a small boutique of country crafts, hot chocolate, and Christmas music playing, plus a small heater to warm by if needed. All trees, any size was only $25. Sweet! Away we all went, saw in hand searching for that perfect tree. The guideline was: it needed to be at least eight feet tall, straight and full, no bald spots—tall order indeed. It is the perfect tree not to be found. Up and down the rows of trees we went. “Keep your eye on this one. It just might be the one we’ll get,” I called back to Mother who had said those exact same words to us thirty years prior at the tree lot in Owensville one cold winter’s night. Sister Debbie and I thought she’d never say, “We’ll take this one,” and mean it. Chilled to the bone the man hurriedly tied it up and crammed it in her car trunk before she changed her mind yet again. Finally, at my tree-cutting event that day, some became weary and hungry; I declared with a nudge from my husband,

Local educator Becky Cropper has received an award for her lifelong efforts to help youth in Brown County. She is one of the seven recipients of the 2016 Jenco Foundation Award. The award is based on “recognizing visionary leadership in the service of others throughout Appalachian Ohio.” Cropper was recently recognized at the Foundation for Appalachian
Ohio’s (FAO) annual Celebration of Legacy at the Markay Cultural Arts Center in Jackson. When asked about the award, Cropper responded with modesty and was quick to credit others as well. “The work that we have done over the years has certainly been a collaboration and network, so I’m really receiving this award on behalf of many people who have dedicated many hours to causes across the county as well,” said Crop-
per. “In the 4-H program, the opportunity that we have is to work with about 300 volunteers that assist the youth to become productive citizens. It has been such an honor to work with all those different people over the years who donate their time and efforts and talents to see youth grow and develop.” Cropper said that getting recognized for her work was very special to her. “I was honored to know that people have appreci-
ated the time and effort and work that I have tried to contribute to make Brown County a better place to be,” she said.

The Brown County Soil and Water Conservation District (Brown SWCD) Board of Supervisors is announcing the first 2017 board meeting scheduled for Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at 7:00 a.m. at 706 South Main Street, Georgetown, Ohio. Future meetings will be held at 7:00 a.m. on the third Wednesday of each month, except for December, the meeting will be held on Wednesday, December 13th. Sometimes God has to humble you by allowing things to come into your life that knock you completely down to the bottom of the barrel. However, it is better for you if God does not have to go that far to get your attention! But, because He loves you and cares about you, He will continue to work you over until you get to the place where you are so low that you just have to look up. Is that what you want? I doubt it; so it would be to your benefit to come back to God before He takes action. He does not want to have to take you to that place, but He loves you so much that He is willing to take you to that place in your life. The prodigal son in this parable was at that place before he made his decision to go back to his father. Then in verse 20 he did not just think it or say it, he actually took action. It says: “And he arose, and came to his father....” Then look what happened: “... But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.” The father was overjoyed to see his son! That is the same reaction that God the Father has when one of His prodigal sons comes home. But then, maybe you are not one of God’s children, prodigal or otherwise. If that be the case, God is not willing that any should perish. He wants you to come to Him. All you have to do is believe in His Son, Jesus Christ. Believe in His death, burial, and resurrection, and ask God to forgive your sin and save your soul. The Bible tells us in Romans 10:9: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” Verse 13: “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at OVM as staff prepare for three nights of Holiday Open Houses. On December 12th, OVM will welcome the family, friends and residents of the Hickory and Maple units. On December 13th, the Spruce, Dogwood and Willow units will celebrate their Holiday Open House. Finally, on December 15th, OVM will hold a Holiday Open House for its Birch unit. Each Holiday Open House will take place at OVM from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm and include a dessert buffet, Christmas carols and a visit from Santa. OVM will also offer “Reindeer Games” in our Wellness Center for the kids.

OBITUARIES Ronald E. Blessing, 69 Ronald Eugene Blessing, age 69, of Decatur, OH, died November 26, 2016. He was born in Dayton, OH, September 28, 1947, to the late Alfred Leroy Blessing, Jr. and Clara Blessing (nee Bowman). He is survived by his wife Dollis Blessing (nee Stutz), daughter Rebecca Ruble, sons Timothy (Annette) and Christopher (Heather) Blessing, stepson Richard (Jennifer) Oberding, step-daughter Tina (Shane) Casey and sister Susan (John) Jackson of Tennessee. Gary Paul Garrison, 67, passed away on November 28, 2016, at his home. Gary was born on March 25, 1949, in Lexington Kentucky, but grew up in Felicity, Ohio, graduating from Felicity Franklin High School and later Eastern Kentucky University. He was a past owner of the "Bear and Bull", Mayor of Boonesboro," avid boater, gentleman farmer, realtor, transportation salesman and dispatcher, beloved father and husband. Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Deborah Shearer Garrison, daughter and "love of his life" Sarah Morgan, his mother, Mildred Jasper Garrison, several cousins, nieces and nephews. His father, Carlisle Garrison (Felicity, OH) preceded him in death. Gary is a long time resident of Boonesboro, officer and member of Boonesboro Boat Club, 2 Mile Creekers, "Chief Scout" of Fort Boonesboro, Kentucky Colonel and alumni of Felicity Franklin High School and Eastern Kentucky University. William M. Ellison, 62, formerly of Ripley, Ohio, died November 24, 2016. The son of Constance Ellison and the late William R. Ellison. Mr. Ellison was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth (Sludder) Ellison. He is survived by his daughter, Ripley C. Ellison; son, Eli C. Are you away from God at this time in your life? Or maybe you serve God, but not as you have in the past? Perhaps you have been away from God your whole life, living in sin in the pigpen of this world. Maybe you know for a fact that you are a sinner, that you are not a child of God. Take a look with me at Luke 15:17: “And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!” This young man had gotten to a place in his life where he had no other choice but to look to his father. It said: “And when he came to himself...” When he realized that in himself there was no hope, no cure, no true happiness in his life, he knew that he needed to turn to his father for help. In verses 18-19 he said: “I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.” The parable talks about an earthly father as an illustration of our heavenly Father. If you are ever going to get right with God you will have to come to the place where you realize that you are a sinner, and that you do have a heavenly Father that loves you and will forgive you of your sin. Even if you are already a believer, but are away from God, involved in things you should not be involved in, you still have a heavenly Father that loves you and will forgive you of those things. All you have to do is repent and then ask Him to forgive you of that sin. The blood that Jesus shed on Calvary’s cross not only saved you that day you asked Him to, but it will also cleanse you of the sin you have commited after you were saved. You just need to come back to the cross afresh and anew, recognizing the fact that you are away from God and are sick and tired of being in a mess of your own making. As the verse said, you need to come to yourself. You need to get down on your knees this very day and get right with God. The prodigal son in this parable made the decision to get right with his earthly father and then carried out that decision. He told his father: “I am no more worthy to be called your son....”

Connie D. Gilkerson, Sr., 78, died Thursday, November 17, 2016 at Ohio Valley Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center near Ripley, Ohio. He was born February 17, 1938 in Concord, Kentucky. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Stella Maude (Bennett) Gilkerson; one son, Connie Davis (David) Gilkerson, Jr.; seven brothers and one sister. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Anna Marie (Honaker) Gilkerson and one daughter, Michelle Gilkerson of Georgetown, Ohio and one “adopted” daughter, Sandra D. Bates of Lexington, Kentucky; one sister, Shirley (Herman) Hall of Cynthiana, Kentucky; thirty-six nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews, two sister-in-laws and two brother-in-laws, and many other family and friends. He was a retired maintenance/security, farmer and police officer. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, December 3, 2016, at 11:00 a.m.. at Mt. Orab United Methodist Church, 11693 State Route 774, Bethel, Ohio. Burial was at Paris Cemetery in Paris, Kentucky. He was the minister at the Sardinia Church of Nazarene and a member of the Sardinia Ministerial Association. Larry was born June 29, 1952 in Cabin Creek, Kentucky the son of the late Nelson Brooks and Opal Pearl (Applegate) Allen. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister – Faye (Edward) Laub. Rev. The deadline for the annual Ohio River Sweep Poster Contest is December 16, 2016. Students in grades K-12 are invited to design a poster for the annual Ohio River Sweep in 2017. The Ohio River Sweep is a one-day cleanup project for the Ohio River and its tributaries. The volunteer event creates awareness of water quality problems caused by litter and illegal dumping. The 28th annual Ohio River Sweep will be held Saturday, June 17, 2017. Posters submitted for
this contest should encourage volunteer participation. The poster contest is open to students living in or attending schools in counties which border the Ohio River or counties which participate in the Ohio River Sweep. Fifteen prizes will be awarded: two $500 prizes and 13 $50 prizes. Chatfield College classes begin in January
If you’ve been thinking about going to college, but have not yet taken the final step, make it a New Year’s resolution to get enrolled in 2017. The spring semester at Chatfield College begins the week of January 16, and there’s still time to register and make that New Year’s resolution a reality. The spring schedule offers a variety of courses in business, computers, education, English, religion, history, psychology, art, public speaking, and many more. During the 15-week semester, each class meets just once a week for 2 ½ hours, which makes it convenient for arranging classes around work schedules or family responsibilities. The average class size is just 12 students, so students are able to easily engage in classroom discussion and receive personal attention from instructors.

U.S. Air Force Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Brandon S. Butler graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Butler is the son of Sheila A. Butler of Bethel, Ohio. He is a 2016 graduate of Western Brown High School, Mount Orab, Ohio.

ARTHRITIS is also known by the medical term “Osteoarthritis.” It is a disease resulting in degeneration of one or more joints of the body. Reasons joints become affected with arthritis include injury, birth defects resulting in malformation, and aging. As a result of whatever the cause, the slick surface of the bones in the joint (cartilage) is worn away exposing the underlying bone which is much rougher. As inflammation from the roughened edges rubbing within the joint, the joint capsule (lining of the joint), ligaments, and adjacent muscles become irritated and scarred. The above description of the development of arthritis makes it easy to see why your pet may not want to do simple ordinary things such as running, jumping, or even walking in severe cases. The pet may first appear stiff on the afflicted leg. As it progresses over time, a limp may become noticeable and eventually your pet will have difficulty in rising from a lying or sitting position. As families and friends prepare to gather together during the busy holiday travel season, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and the Ohio State Highway Patrol are utilizing the state’s 130 freeway message signs, as well as portable highway signs, to raise awareness about the growing drugged driving problem in Ohio. The highway signs will display messaging alerting travelers to the increase in drugged driving crashes.
They also urge people to start talking about the drug abuse epidemic, a reference to the state’s Start Talking Initiative that encourages parents and community leaders to talk to their children about the dangers of drug use. According to ODOT traffic crash statistics, Ohio has seen a 25% increase in drugged driving crashes since 2012. There have been 3,574 drugged driving crashes already this year, or about 33 percent of all im-
paired driving crashes. Driving a vehicle while impaired, whether by alcohol or drugs, puts the driver, passengers, roadside workers, and others who share the road at risk. “Lives are forever changed when people make the decision to drive after taking drugs,� said Colonel Paul Pride, Patrol Superintendent. “If you see drug activity or impaired driving report it immediately to the Patrol by calling #677.�

BY Wayne Gates The 2016 Mt. Orab Christmas Parade was held on Nov. 26 and organizers are calling it a big success. “We all thought it went really well. The weather was great, the crowd was really great, we had a lot of fantastic floats and entries in the parade and overall it just went really well,” said parade committee member Missy Schneider. This was the tenth year for the parade and the sixth year that it has taken place at night. “The weather was great, the crowd was really great, we had a lot of fantastic floats and entries in the parade and overall it just went really well,” said Schneider. There were 64 entries in the parade. Schneider said that the
parade committee is already looking ahead to 2017. “We’ve already started planning for next year. We’ve got a few ideas for floats next year and we’ll just have to wait and see,” she said. “We would really like to thank all of our sponsors, because without them this wouldn’t be possible to put on every year.” Schneider named the Mt. Orab Port Authority, The Mt. Orab Village Council, Dunkin Donuts, Mt. Orab Ford as sponsors and extended one more expression of gratitude. “We do want to give a special thanks to Collins Towing for painting the little truck that Woody (Whittington) was driving around and we really appreciate that,” Schneider said.

Jones finished 33rd with a time of 21:18. Success for Leto and Jones this fall didn't come without some setbacks. Due to illness, Jones' training for her sophomore cross country season was delayed and she would miss the first three meets of the season before her strong finish. Leto wasn't able to compete in the Lady Broncos' second, third, or fourth meets of the season due to injury, but would battle back to finish on a strong note. The Western Brown High School girls cross country team is headed by longtime coach Jim Neu, who was very proud of his sophomore standouts for their outstanding performances this past season.

Lady Rockets open season with victory over Hillsboro Murphy leads way with 20 points BY Wade Linville The Brown County Press The Fayetteville-Perry Lady Rockets opened their season on a positive note Nov. 28, as they took on the Hillsboro Lady Indians to capture a 55-47 victory. The Lady Rockets were led in scoring by sophomore guard Cecilia Murphy, who racked up 20 points to go along with eight rebounds, seven steals, and three assists in an outstanding performance. omore forward Hannah Wiederhold, who finished with 15 points to go along with five steals, one block, and two assists. Fayetteville senior Taylor Cornett shot for 14 points in the Lady Rocket victory while also pulling down three rebounds and dishing out one assist. The Lady Rockets were scheduled to begin Southern Hills Athletic Conference play on Thursday, Dec. 1 with a road game against the Ripley-Union-Lewis-Huntington Lady Jays who fell tow Williamsburg in their season opener on Nov. 26 at Ripley. "I felt the ladies never lost their focus with the change of
venues and being their first game of the year," Fayetteville-Perry head coach Toby Sheets said following his Lady Rockets' win over Hillsboro. "For me, personally, it was like 1988 all over again being in that gym." "We played hard and gave it our all, which is what we preach daily," Sheets added. "Hillsboro is a much improved basketball team with a nice mix of size and speed. It was a good start to the season for this year's Lady Rockets." The Lady Rockets are back on their home court Monday, Dec. 5 as they play host to the Manchester Lady Greyhounds for a league contest.

Lady Broncos face talented Wilmington squad in season opener at Western Brown BY Wade Linville The Brown County Press The 2016-17 court campaign got underway for the Western Brown Lady Broncos on Tuesday, Nov. 29, as they played host to a very skilled squad from Wilmington High School for a non-league contest. The Lady Broncos started off the game on a 5-0 run, but then it was Wilmington answering with a 5-0 run to tie the game early on. Wilmington then took a 7-5 lead with a field goal from sophomore guard Mya Jackson, but Western

Brown senior Bailie Darnall would sink a bucket down low to tie the game at seven apiece. A field two-point field goal by Wilmington's freshman guard Jasmine Jamiel left the Lady Broncos trailing 9-7, and then it was a three-pointer by Jackson that lifted Wilmington to a 12-7 lead with just over a minute to go in the first period. The Lady Hurricanes ended the first quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 17-7 lead and never looked back. Backed by a quick and aggressive defense, the
Hurricanes made offensive execution difficult on the Lady Broncos while Jackson and Jamiel put together impressive offensive performances. By halftime break the Hurricanes had risen to a commanding 4213 lead with Jackson racking up 19 points in the first half and Jamiel finishing the first half with eight points. The Lady Broncos returned from halftime break to outscore the Hurricanes 11-9 in the third period with Darnall racking up seven points in the quarter, but it was Wilmington still holding a comfortable 51-24 lead entering the final frame. The Lady Broncos went on to outscore the Hurricanes 13-12 in the fourth period with scores coming from Western Brown's Emily Cooper, Cana Kleemeyer, Maddy Whisman, Rylie Young, Darnall, and Gracie Fischer. Leading the Lady Broncos in scoring was Darnall with 11 points. Whisman finished with eight points, while Western junior Tessa Pinkerton ended the night with seven points. They may just be sophomores, but Western Brown cross country standouts Sophie Leto and Carson Jones have already made the Lady Broncos' top 10 list of all-time female cross country runners. Both ended their regular season this fall by earning spots on the Southern Buckeye Athletic/Academic Conference American Division First Team with Jones placing sixth in the SBAAC American Division Cross Country Championship Meet with a time of 21:17 and Leto placing seventh with a time of 21:22. The two Western sophomores then ventured to West Chester's Voice of America Park where they
would both record personal record times in the Southwest District Division II Tournament to qualify for the regional tourney at Troy. Leto ran for a sixth place finish in the district championships with a personal best time of 20:30, a time that earned her seventh on Western Brown's all-time Lady Broncos' list. Jones posted a personal best time of 20:36 to place eighth in the district championships, a finish time that earned her ninth on the Lady Broncos' list of alltime cross country runners. On a very windy day at Troy, Leto and Jones would cap off a successful fall season by competing in the Division II Regional Tournament. Leto placed 29th in the regional meet with a time of 21:11, while
Hunters checked 18,776 white-tailed deer on Monday, Nov. 28, the opening day of Ohio’s deer-gun hunting season, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). In 2015, 22,253 deer were reported the first day of the deer-gun season. Ohio’s deer-gun season remains open through Sunday, Dec. 4. Two additional days of deer-gun season (Saturday, Dec. 17, and Sunday, Dec. 18) are available for people to hunt with firearms. In his 21st year as head coach of the Georgetown High School varsity girls basketball program, Bernie Cropper has recorded his 500th career win. Croppers 500th victory came on Monday, Nov. 28 at Batavia High School, as his Lady GMen claimed their first victory of the season by topping the home-standing Lady Bulldogs 38-18 in a non-league contest that saw Georgetown’s sturd y defense hold the home team to only six points in the first half and 12 points in the second half. “It felt great,” Cropper
said of his 500th career victory. “We played really well and it was a great win for us. They played so hard, especially on defense.” While the majority of Cropper's career wins have come over the past 21 years as the Georgetown varsity girls basketball coach, he was also able to re cord a great deal of wins at programs at other schools throughout his coaching career that began in the 1978-79 season. Sophomore guard Kim Seigla led the Lady GMen in the win over Batavia with 17 points. Georgetown sophomore Kennedy Underwood finished the game just one point shy of a
double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. Georgetown's senior guard Kassidy Seigla played a huge role in the win to finish with eight rebounds, five steals, three assists, and putting forth an excellent defensive effort that helped the Lady G-Men hold the Lady Bulldogs to only six points in the first half. The Lady G-Men were scheduled to hold their first home game on Thursday, Dec. 1, as they play host to the New Richmond Lady Lions for a non-league contest. of Peebles High School. The Rockets struggled early on to fall behind 6-0 and at one point in the first quarter they would find themselves trailing 15-4. It was Fayetteville junior Colin Connor coming through with a pair of field goals, followed by a score down low from junior postman Zak Smyth that would cut the Peebles' lead to single digits just before the end of the first frame. With one period in the books, it was Peebles leading 19-10. The Peebles Indians went on to outscore the Rockets 13-8 in the second quarter to claim a 3218 victory in the half-game preview. Taking the court next was the Ripley-UnionLewis-Huntington Blue Jays of the SHAC big school division and the Whiteoak Wildcats of the small school division. The Blue Jays struggled with turnovers as they seemed to be working out some early-season jitters. As a result, the Wildcats rose to a 12-5 lead in the first quarter. The Jays settled down a bit in the second frame, outscoring the Wildcats 10-3 with the preview contest ending in a 15-15 tie. Ripley junior Josiah Staggs kicked off scoring in the second period with an old fashioned threepoint play to cut the
Whiteoak lead to 12-8. The Wildcats managed to expand their lead to 158, but it was Ripley sophomore Jaki Royal coming through with a field goal to slice the Wildcat lead to just five. After being fouled on a shot, Royal went to the charity stripe to sink oneof-two attempts to narrow the margin to four points. With 1:51 to play, it was Royal coming through with a score on a fastbreak to leave the Jays trailing by just two points. A bucket by Ripley junior Brian Dunn would follow, tying the game at 15 with 1:30 left on the clock. Neither team would manage another score for the final minute-and-ahalf. “We're working to get better every day and the kids are jelling well,” Ripley head coach Marty Adams said following the Jays' performance at this year's preview. The next preview bout saw the Eastern Warriors of the SHAC big school division take the court against the Manchester Greyhounds of the small school division. After trailing 14-8 at the end of the first quarter, the Warriors rallied back to claim a 21-18 victory. A pair of three-pointers by Eastern junior Garyn Purdy cut the Manchester lead to 18-16 late in the second quarter, then it was a steal and score by Eastern senior Blake Rigdon that tied the game at 18.
A field goal by Eastern sophomore Ethan Battson put the Warriors on top 20-18, and capping off the three-point victory was a hit free throw by sophomore Marcus Hamilton. Local varsity boys basketball teams were scheduled to officially begin their new season this week. Seatbelts save lives
There is no disputing that wearing a safety belt can save your life. The Ohio State Highway Patrol is encouraging all motorists to buckle up this upcoming holiday season and continue to do so throughout the new year. From 2013-2015, 1151 people were killed in crashes across Ohio who were not wearing an available safety belt. “It’s simple – safety belts save lives and reduce injury in crashes,” said Lt. Randy McElfresh, commander of the Georgetown Post. “It is the easiest and most effective action you can take to protect yourself, your family and your friends.” The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates 394 lives were saved in Ohio and 13,941 were saved nationwide in 2015 as a direct result of motorists buckling up. According to Ohio’s 2015 Observational Seatbelt Survey, 83.9 percent of motorists were found to be in compliance with Ohio’s safety belt law. This is a decrease from the 85.0% observed in 2014, the record high. Occupants of light trucks (80%) and those who were 15-25 years old (82%) were below the statewide rate. Women (88%) were more likely to wear safety belts than men (81%). Male passengers of motor vehicles aged 15-25 only had a 64% usage rate, the lowest in the survey. While these rates appear high, far too many Ohioans still do not buckle up. Ohio’s safety belt law remains a secondary violation; however, troopers continue zero tolerance enforcement when motorists are stopped for other violations and are found unbuckled. Safety belt usage rates in the 34 states with primary safety belt laws continue to be higher than the rates in states with secondary laws like Ohio (91% versus 79% in 2015). Troopers wrote 118,358 citations in 2015, for failure to wear a safety belt. Troopers ask that you wear your safety belt every time and insist that those who travel with you buckle up as well.
