WILLINGLY

In Exodus 25 the children of Israel had been released from slavery in Egypt for over 400 years. They had crossed the Red Sea and had received the Ten Commandments from God. While still at Mount Sinai, which the Bible tells us in Galatians 4:25 is in Arabia, the Lord spoke to Moses saying: “Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring me an offering: of every man that giveth it willingly with his heart ye shall take my offering.” The Lord called it His offering and it was to be given willingly. Pay attention, the Lord wasn’t talking about the tithe which every man owes Him. That is an obligation. He was talking about a willing offering! He did not want a person to give if that person was going to give it grudgingly! Willingness was and is important to God! Now, this offering was for the first building program in the Bible. They were to build a structure where the Lord could meet with the people. Look at verse 8: “And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.” He loved them and wanted to meet with them the same as He wants to meet with us today! We call the building where we meet with God a church. Hebrews 10:25 states: “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together...” Assembling means to get together in a group. Jesus wants us to get together because He said: “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” (Matthew 18:20). God desires to be among His people. In Genesis 3:8 it tells us: “And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.” God wanted to be with them but sin had entered into the picture and they were ashamed of their nakedness. Sinful man is a lustful creature! Nakedness causes people to lust after one another and sin and lust go hand in hand. It is a shame that people can not figure that out today! Cover up, lust is still wickedness in the eyes of the Lord even today and don’t you forget it! Still, all in all, God wants to meet with us. So He said: make me a sanctuary; that I may

dwell therein but not with money given grudgingly. God is not a beggar, He is not going to beg for your money! It amazes me that people wills send thousands of dollars in to a TV preacher to support their program and begrudge the local church, which is where it is suppose to go. God said: “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings....Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house...” (Malachi 3:8-10). The house of God in the New Testament is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth (I Timothy 3:15). The local church is the building where we meet together, get baptized, take communion, and hear the word of God preached. The offering is to be taken here. Verse 3 of Exodus 25 says: “And this is the offering which ye shall take of them; gold, and silver, and brass...” These are three of the things among others used to build the building. Gold in the Bible always speaks of God, silver speaks of redemption and truth, and brass speaks of judgment. Sin must be judged. If God, who is just, never judged sin, then justice and goodness would cease to be. Now, let’s look at how much offering was actually taken up. Did they get enough to build the tabernacle? Go with me to Exodus 36:7: “For the stuff they had was sufficient for all the work to make it, and too much.” Verse 6 says: “...So the people were restrained from bringing.” I don’t think we have that problem today! However, church buildings need to be built and then maintained and that requires offerings. God wants willing hearts to give willingly to their local church so that He can meet with His people and His word be put forth. Do you begrudge when you give?
