Thousands of people turned out to hear “Little Texas and other artists during Summerfest in the Mt. Orab park.
Summerfest draws thousands “Exciting”..... “Great Fun”...... “Huge Success”....those are just a few of the adjectives used by participants and visitors to describe the first annual SummerFest held August 1 and 2, sponsored by the Brown County Chamber of Commerce. Held at the Mt. Orab Park,
it is estimated by Brian Elliot, president of the chamber, that SummerFest drew at least 10,000 people to the park in the course of the twoday event. “I just can’t express how excited we are at the chamber at how well the event went,” Elliott said. “It exceeded all our expectations and we are already talking about next years event and what can be added, changed
or improved on.” Elliott said between 6 and 7 thousand people turned out for the ‘Little Texas’ concert on Saturday night. The parade, which took place took place on Friday night was also very well attended. “This was a first for the chamber,” Elliott said, “So it was all new to us. But with the help and consideration from the Mt. Orab Mayor, Bruce Lunsford, Police
Chief Bryan Mount and Lisa Reeves, Mt. Orab Fire Chief, we made it happen. “And I understand from Chief Mount that there were no citations, no arrests, no anything, both days, so we were especially happy about that. In fact there has been no negativity around us at all, we haven’t had a single complaint, other than the rain shower on Saturday evening.”
Elliott said the Brown County Chamber gained at least eight new members during the SummerFest event. “I did find out that Kathy’s Place sold out both Friday and Saturday,” he said. “The whole event turned out to be everything we had hoped for and more. Of course, now, it’s like...how do we take it up to the next level?”
Elliott said he wants to be careful not to turn the SummerFest into a county fair. “From its inception,” he added, “SummerFest was meant to highlight the businesses of Brown County, and the chamber hopes to keep that as its mission. These were all Brown County businesses set up at the event and I didn’t hear anything negative from any of the vendors. CONTINUED ON PAGE 11

Elkins was also joined by Marine Corps veteran Danny Bubp who served three tours in Iraq and Vietnam army veteran Jim Hile. The four talked about their time in the armed forces, sharing experiences and memories. “I graduated from Ripley High School in 2011,” Pfc. Not only was it nice to get things from home, but suddenly we had things to share with the Afghanistan children.” Elkins said his squad of nine soldiers received gift boxes from “Support Our Troops,” “Adopt a Platoon” and “Troop Box Ministries,” in Hamersville. RULH asks voters to vote ‘yes’ on 2.6 mill levy BY Martha B. Jacob The Brown County Press
Members of the RipleyUnion-Lewis-Huntington School District Board of Education approved a resolution to put a 2.6 mill general permanent improvement, five year levy on the November ballot at it’s July 16 meeting. This attempt to pass the levy marks the district’s third try. Ripley resident, Mike Wright, who is the president of the committee, “Citizens for RULH Students) is working diligently to get the word out to voters in the school district just how important this levy is. “I know that there are many questions about this levy,” Wright said. “All the members of the “Citizens for RULH Students is made up of volunteers from across this district. Some members work at the schools, some are parents, but each of them is interested in providing the best possible education to the students in our district.” Wright said the committee is doing everything within its power to promote the levy. Ads and fliers, radio announcements, mailings and signs have been placed throughout the district, all paid for by donations to the committee. “I am the parent of two
RULH students,” Wright said. “I want my kids to have the tools to succeed in life.” Wright added that several reasons he plans on supporting the levy include: • He wants his kids and all the RULH students to be able to get to and from school safely on upgraded buses; • He wants his kids and all the students to have the most up to date technology and computers; • He wants his kids and all the students to have safe and comfortable places to learn through repairs and updates to the high school facility and grounds. “Our school district’s budget is stretched to the bare bones,” he said, “not much more can be cut. But I understand a lot of people have questions about why the levy is necessary. “To tell the truth, I have asked myself some of those same questions. That’s why I try to attend all the school board meetings and talk one on one to teachers, principals and the superintendent to get the answers I want. I only want what’s best for my kids, for all the great kids at RULH.” Wright added that he wants his voice to be hears when the school makes plans for his kids education. “If a parent doesn’t like what’s going on in the district then they too, should be
attending these board meetings,” Wright said. “Change doesn’t happen when people are willing to sit back and just let things happen then complain about it later. Change happens when people are willing to get involved. I know that some decisions the board have made in the past have made some people unhappy, but please, lets leave the past in the past, and move forward.” Wright stated that the future of RULH Schools is now in the hands of the voters. “As a member of this community and as the president of Citizens for RULH Students,” Wright said, “I am asking all voters in this school district to look into your hearts and vote yes on the levy in November. Please give us a chance to speak to you before you make up your mind on the levy. Remember it is the kids we are helping, no one else.” Wright can be reached at (937) 515-1638, or email him with any questions at citizensforrulhstudents@gm ail.com. “Please come out to the next meeting of Citizens for RULH Students scheduled for Wednesday, August 13 at 6 p.m. at the RULH Elementary School,” Wright said. “We will have answers to your questions.”

of the highlights of his tour in Afghanistan was being a part of the peaceful election which was held in the country. “I was really happy about being part of that election,” he said. “My company was responsible for putting in the Covert Denial Systems which made the elections possible.” The Covert Denial Systems were placed at five different locations within the country. The systems are designed to prevent the placement of explosive devices in small tunnels along the main highway which ensured safe passage by travelers to the voting locations. “That was a big deal to us,” he said, “being able to do our jobs and make the country safer for people to vote. JUST A THOUGHT, OR GOD’S TRUTH?
I have heard preachers on television, radio and in person when they deliver a tear-wrenching service on Matthew 25:3233. In a theatrical voice they say, “The sinners are the goats, and we saved Christians are the sheep”. Then, they recite lines out of Dante’s Inferno about sinners burning in hell forever. On the other hand, they, as good Christians, get to watch gleefully while they rejoice at the screams of those burning. That sounds like a lot of potential Molech worship to me. As I believe that all scriptures have a second witness, I was led to the Great Prophet EZEKIEL (whose name means “the strength of God”), to help better understand the message in Matthew 25:32-33. In Ezekiel 34:2-24, verse 2 says “Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds (priests, kings, princes). Woe be to the shepherds of Israel that do feed themselves, should not the shepherds feed the flocks?” How many of us have heard those with the title of reverend, pastor, or priest try to threaten, beg, and spiritually coerce seniors on a fixed income, people who have lost their jobs, and those who are down on their luck, and barely making a living for tithes using the seed-sowing gimmick “give me a hundred and the Lord will give you a thousand”? These people have fed no one Biblical Truths. They teach doctrines such as the rapture, speaking in tongues, easter, Cain marrying his sister, and other church traditions. Should you tithe to these preachers, and let them get fat off of your blessings? Will YHVH bless you if you do not love Him enough to read His real truth and obey it? Let’s get back to Ezekiel 34:17-20. This explains who the he-goats are. The word cattle, should be translated as sheep (reference Strongs #7716 in Hebrew language). Verse 17 is pretty much where the rubber meets the road. “As for you, Oh My flock, doth saith the Lord God; behold I judge between cattle and cattle, and between the rams (political leaders) and the he-goats (preacher or priests); seemeth it a small thing unto you to have eaten up the good pasture but ye must tread down with your feet the residue of your pastures? To have drunk of the deep water (God’s truth)? But ye must foul the residue with your feet? And as for My flock they eat that which ye have trodden (God’s Word) and with your feet and they drink (Spiritual Water) that which ye have fouled with your feet”. Fellow Christians, I only ask that you read and study Ezekiel 34 for yourself. Pray for guidance from YHVH, through Yeshua, so that the Holy Spirit will give you eyes to see and ears to hear (Matthew 13:10-17) if it is YHVH’s will. Maybe the next time you hear a sermon about goats and sheep, you will think about the truth taught from the Book of Ezekiel; not tales and half-truths from a pulpit. Varnau disagrees with appeals court Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor, Letter to Editor, in response to “Court keeps Sheriff’s file sealed,” Sunday, August 3, 2014: This sealed criminal trial record issue underlies felonious criminal activity that has been successfully covered up for more than a decade through political power and control. This sealed record issue is pertinent to upholding the law against elected public officials as much as the law is typically forcefully applied to politically “unconnected” citizens being prosecuted daily for less serious crimes in Brown County. In this case, the outright felonious theft of public funds through fraud is involved. Our country is supposed to be a nation of laws. Republicans steadfastly claim to be THE superior rule-oflaw advocates over the Democrats. In reality, both are fallacies better described as fairy tales in Ohio. Republicans totally control every judicial seat save one from the Brown County Common Pleas Court, through the 12th District Court of Appeals to the Ohio Supreme Court. A trial “court must find
that ‘probable cause’ exists to believe that a defendant committed the crime before the defendant may be prosecuted. ‘Probable cause’ is defined as a level of reasonable belief, based on facts that can be articulated, that is required to arrest and prosecute a person in criminal court.” Prior to sealing Sheriff Wenninger’s criminal trial record, October 2003, Judge Ringland had already stated in open court that Dwayne was “not the sheriff,” after the jury verdict of “not guilty” on the criminal charge of “knowingly” falsifying election documentation. What the jury held was that Dwayne did not “knowingly,” falsely claim he was qualified to be a sheriff candidate. The verdict did not make Dwayne automatically qualified. He still lacked the necessary qualifications to be a candidate in 2000, and to hold the office from 2003 onward, which is why Judge Ringland said Dwayne “was not the sheriff,” prior to the sealing hearing. In Podolsky’s case, according to the Common Pleas and 12th District
Court, Judge Ringland performed the “balancing test” as constitutionally prescribed. That is to say, Judge Ringland found that Dwayne had a constitutionally protected right or privilege that outweighed the public’s need and right to know (back then and now) what is contained in Dwayne’s trial record. This prompts two obvious questions. First: What constitutional privacy right did Dwayne have in October 2003 (and now), as an elected official, that would outweigh the public’s need and right to know what is in his trial record for it to be forever sealed from public access? If you noticed in both decisions, the Common Pleas and 12th District Court failed to state what that privacy right was/is, considered by Judge Ringland to be superior to the public’s constitutional right to access the documentation. Second: If Judge Ringland articulated at trial the jury verdict did not change the underlying fact that Dwayne was not qualified to hold the position of sheriff, why did the Judge seal

Individuals needed to help with history of Mount Orab Depot Mount Orab Depot pictured in the 1970’s.
Dear Editor, The Mt. Orab Women’s Club needs a few good men. . . . and women to relate stories or share pictures regarding the history of the Mt. Orab Depot located at 200 Woodward Street. The Mt. Orab Depot is the oldest buildings in Mt. Orab and is part of the Ohio Historical Register. Perhaps you or one of your relatives or friends traveled on the train coming into Mt. Orab or possibly you know of someone in the military who was transported through Mt. Orab. In the early days the Mt. Orab Depot was the
main hub for travel for shopping or working in the city or for transporting animals to market. What a sight it must have been! One of our club member’s parents met the “love of her life” at the Depot in those early days. What a life they built together enriching their community by becoming business owners. Can you guess who she is? The Mt. Orab Women’s Club would appreciate talking to anyone with history regarding the Depot. Do you have a story similar to the one above? We are looking for stories or
pictures or any memorabilia to use in the renovation of this historical building back to the late 1800’s. One of our long term goals after the renovation is to open the Depot for group tours. It is our belief that friends and families will come from all over to revisit the history of those early days! Would you like to be part of this historical adventure by donating stories or pictures? Please call (513) 910 -2230 to set up an appointment to discuss your participation. Bev Burkart
the record? By sealing the record Judge Ringland facilitated a fraud. The Judge helped pave the way for Dwayne to “personate an officer to defraud” in violation of ORC 2913.44. Why did Judge Ringland seal the case file when he had already articulated facts in open court that Dwayne would be personating an officer, if Dwayne did not immediately resign his position as sheriff at the end of his criminal trial, prior to the sealing hearing? “Probable cause” existed for violation of 2913.44, prior to sealing Dwayne’s record, even more so after the Judge sealed it. Why did the judge knowingly help Dwayne violate the criminal law? Courts exist to ensure there is justice in order to protect society. Laws, like the sealing statutes, are not enacted with the legislative intent for them to be used as instrumentalities for covering up ongoing criminal activity. That, however, is exactly what the Common Pleas and 12th District have sanctioned in these “unsealing” motion decisions by using misleading and deceptive reasoning that defies all common legal sense and logic in the process. These attempts to unseal a criminal trial record, sealed by a Judge currently sitting as one of the five justices behind closed doors in the 12th District Court of Appeals building, raises another obvious serious question of credibility. When facts exist, like those described above, involving obvious criminal activity, and the Judge who approved the sealing of the trial court record is now sitting on the same court adjudicating these appeals, that definitely appears to be at least a very visible conflict of interest. It would seem to me after all these years of litigation that Sheriff Wenninger would be more than willing now to voluntarily unseal his criminal trial record prior to retiring. This action would forever put finality on the issue, proving to the public and the world that he has been qualified ever since he first took office January 1, 2001. Doing so would also preclude the receipt of retirement benefits being under the same illegal cloud of fraud or theft by deception from PERS on the state level. Dennis J. Varnau Georgetown, OH

ect to bring BCRWA water to Aberdeen will take one to two years to complete and cost about $2.5 to three million dollars. “As soon as we can start comfortably and safely feeding water to the Village of Aberdeen, and that could be a year to a year and a half, we will do that. We are going to meet with the Ohio EPA this month to go over the project and then hopefully bid out the project in early fall and get started before the end of the year.” Sarbach said that the infrastructure of the area will be much improved. “We are going to have three or four new feed lines tying into the village. We are also going to add a new three to four hundred thousand gallon tank north of the village.” Sarbach said the tank will provide increased water pressure and storage capacity to the village. Sarbach also said that the additional five dollar charge that will be assessed to village residents will only have one purpose. “That five dollars is one hundred percent going to paying off the Shinn Brothers (lawsuit) over time. It will be separate on the books, and anyone is welcome to come by the office and examine them. That money will not be used for any other purpose.” Shinn Brothers successfully sued the Village of Aberdeen for a $700,000 judgement after the village cancelled work on a contract with the company to build a water plant.
BCRWA is paying the village $700,000 for the system, and the village will use the funds to pay off the lawsuit. “As soon as that goes away, the five bucks comes off the bill”, Sarbach said. That time period has been publically estimated to be 17 years. Village Fiscal Officer Nathan Pfeffer said that the vote will have benefits for the village residents other than just water. The village has already paid approximately two hundred thousand dollars to Shinn brothers, and will now have that amount available in the general fund once the BCRWA pays $700,000 for the water system and the remaining balance is subtracted. “The yes vote keeps the village out of what could have been financial disaster”, Pfeffer said. “The Shinn Brothers lawsuit will be off our shoulders now.” Pfeffer said that the fifty percent cut to the local government fund has hurt the bottom line for the village. “This money will help the general fund become more stable over the next couple of years. It will give us a cushion for emergencies and greater flexibility for planning.” Pfeffer said that another benefit to the vote will be putting a divisive issue in the village to rest. “We no longer have to worry about water issues. That seemed to be the most divisive thing in this village. That is now behind us and we can move on.”

an automatic appeal in cases where public officials are attempted to be removed. Attorney Thomas Eagle has filed a response to Hawkins’ request on behalf of Dr. Varnau. Eagle pointed out that Kessler found that “Plaintiffs have failed to prove by clear and convincing evidence that Coroner Varnau has committed violations sufficient to warrant removal” and that any failures by her “do not sufficiently make out clear and convincing evidence of gross neglect.” Eagle also pointed out a procedural argument, writing that state law requires that a removal complaint against an official must be signed by not less than 15 percent of those who cast a vote in the last gubernatorial election. In this case, that number was 2000 signatures. Hawkins gathered approximately 2300 signatures, but turned them in on attached petitions, rather than attaching the signatures to the complaint itself. “Because the complaint was not signed in compliance with the Statute the courts jurisdiction (Kessler), and therefore this court’s jurisdiction (the appeals court) is not properly invoked. Therefore this case, and this attempted appeal, is defective and should be dismissed on this ground alone”, Eagle
writes. Eagle also maintains that Hawkins filed her appeal before getting permission to do so by the court. “A notice of appeal from a removal action cannot be filed until leave is granted to do so”, Eagle writes. He then quotes Ohio revised Code as reading “Such notice of appeal may be filed only after leave has been granted by the court of appeals for good cause shown....” (Emphasis added). No such leave has been granted, and therefore the July 23, 2014, ‘notice of appeal’ must be stricken.” Eagle also points out that state law reads that an appeal can only be made on questions of law, and that the decision by Kessler makes it a question of fact. “Because the appeal the Appellant requests leave to file is one only challenging the trail court’s determination that Plaintiff did not at trial meet its burden of proof, it is a question of fact, not law...A removal action cannot be appealed on such questions of fact. Therefore the motion for leave to appeal should be denied and this appeal dismissed.” The timeframe of this case depends on the decision of the appeals court. If the court refuses to hear the appeal, the case is over. If the court allows the appeal, it could be six to eight months before a decision is reached.

store data that can be accessed at school or at home. Seigla said it is important to close the technology gap that exists between traditional public education and the workplace of the 21st century. “We can use this technology to use apps in-house to teach students skills they are interested in. It’s important to us to help them understand what they want to do when they get older”, he said. Burrows said that every student would become familiar with technologies that are used in higher education. “A prime example is the Blackboard app, which a lot of the universities use. One hundred percent of our kids, grades seven through twelve, will use the Blackboard lesson management system on a daily basis so the ones that move on to higher education will already be familiar with it.” He added that the teachers
are also getting ready to use the new tools. “We are challenging our teachers to pick one thing that they can use that Ipad for on a daily basis with the kids. If each of our thirty teachers do that, that will be thirty different experiences our kids will have had with technology in a years time.” Fifteen year old Alexandria Graves said she already had some uses in mind for her Ipad. “I’m taking a guitar class, so I can see myself downloading something that would help me learn how to play chords and stuff like that.” Burrows said the Ipads are part of the vision that the district has for its students. “Ultimately, our goal here is to graduate kids with associates degrees or career tech certificates. Our whole mission is to make this a place where kids want to be, teachers want to teach and parents want to send their kids.”

Second Coming John 10:1: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.” A door is a good thing. It makes it very convenient to enter into a place. However, this passage has a greater meaning than entering into an earthly sheepfold by another way other than the door. What Jesus was saying is that there is only one way into Heaven and if you try any other way you are equivalent to a thief and a robber. You are not going to get there by any other way anyhow, so why try? The way to get there is simply by coming in at the door. Look at verse 2: “But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.” The shepherd of an earthly sheepfold enters in by way of the door. He does not try to climb over the wall. Jesus is the Shepherd of His sheep and not only that; He is also the door. Look at verse 7: “Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.” When Jesus says: “Verily, verily” He is making a very strong point. He wants you to listen up and pay attention! He is the door! If you want to get into Heaven, Jesus Christ is the only doorway for you! You do not have to hope, or wonder, or guess how to get there. You can absolutely know the way. He even repeats it again in verse 9: “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.” You can come straight in at the door and have what your soul has been longing for. He is the creator of your soul and you can find rest and peace in His pasture. Now you might not think of yourself as a sheep but the Bible tells us in Isaiah 53:6: “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way...” Which is equivalent to Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”. Instead of getting on the right path most have followed the wrong path and that is where the sheep go astray. The most popular Psalm of all is the 23rd Psalm and it begins with: “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.” Jesus is the Shepherd and the door. Sheep need a shepherd; people need the Shepherd and believe it or

not, we are people! Look at verse 11: “ I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.” Did the Good Shepherd give His life for the sheep? He sure did! He gave it on Calvary’s cross and shed His precious blood to cover our sins. It was not that He could not do otherwise. It was because He voluntarily bore our own sins in His own body. II Corinthians 5:21: “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” I Peter 2:24: “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.” So, the Shepherd died for the sheep! Well, you might ask: what can you do with a dead Shepherd? Nothing! He could not help us at all. But our Shepherd did not stay dead! They put Him in the grave but 3 days later He arose again. Ladies and gentlemen, He was seen by all the disciples and not them only. I Corinthians 15:6 states: “After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once...” And in verse 8 the Apostle Paul said: “And last of all he was seen of me also...” Therefore, there were plenty of eye witnesses of the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ! Jesus told His disciples in Luke 24:39: “Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.” Furthermore, He is not only alive with a physical resurrected body, but He is coming back physically and bodily again! I know that people have been saying that for years but the full 2000 years have not yet expired. You have to count from His death, not from His birth. Ladies and gentlemen, make no mistake, He is coming back! Are you ready?

Summerfest draws thousands CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Those businesses were the main event and I hope people will utilize their services in the future.” Also during the event C103 and WAOL 99.5 radio stations sponsored a very successful back-pack giveaway according to radio station representative Shona Vance. “I started this Back-2School Bazaar at Rent-2Own in Georgetown eight years ago,” Vance said.
“When I took a job at the radio station the Back-2School Bazaar came with me and it has really grown. “During SummerFest we were able to distribute 1,000 back-packs filled with all kinds of school supplies. We hoped for at least 900, and we were very pleased that so many kids showed up to get their free back-packs. A line formed and wrapped around the park for nearly four hours as we distributed the packs.” Vance said that two platinum sponsors, including
Julie Steddom and the Brown County Republican Party made huge donations to the Back-2-School Bazaar which allowed it to put together so many back-packs. “We had 75 kids the first year we held the Back-2School Bazaar,” Vance said, “And I remember how excited we were to have so many kids turn out. So imagine how thrilled we were to give away 1,000 bags. Parents have a lot of expenses to deal with getting their kids ready for school, with the
cost of haircuts, clothes, physicals, you name it. But hopefully we were able to relieve some of their burden.” Vance said other contributors to the back-pack giveaway and SummerFest included: • Southern State Community College • Mt. Orab Kroger • Ultimate Salon • Home Street Dental • Kakes & Karaoke • Brown County Sheriff Office • Frontier Communica-
tions • Bruce Wallace • Jill Hall • Georgetown Church of Christ • 68 Bait and Tackle • Bobcats, Mt. Orab. Elliott said that he was pleased with all the businesses who took a chance with the event and participated. “I look for next year to be even bigger and better,” Elliott added. “We would like to offer special thanks to some of our other sponsors,
which include Reliable Transportation Solutions, Cahall Brothers, Southwest Regional Medical Center, Mt. Orab Ford, First State Bank, Merchants National Bank, The Brown County Press, GJ Pepsi Bottling Plant and the Brown County Fair Board. The answer is an unequivocal yes but the feline situation is vastly different from the canine situation. While it is true that the feline infection is not as common as the canine infection, the feline infection has recently been found to be a much more widespread problem than previously believed. In the past, a common statistic was that within a given geographic area, the feline heartworm infection rate was approximately 10% of the canine infection rate. Recent research indicates this is not so. In heartworm endemic areas like here in Clermont county, the incidence of feline heartworm infection rivals or surpasses that of feline leukemia virus or feline immunodeficiency virus. An incidence of 15-20% of all cats has been reported for our area, making heartworm a concern for any cat living where there are mosquitoes. The Parasite and its Migration • The cat is not a natural host for the heartworm, which means the migrating larval heartworm is not likely to complete its life cycle. • Whereas a moderate heartworm infection in a dog would involve 25 to 50 adult heartworms, infected cats typically have less than six adult worms. Because the feline heart and blood vessels are so small, these few worms can wreak havoc. In a dog, six worms or fewer might not be considered worth treating. In a cat, a single worm could easily represent a lethal infection. • Whereas worms found in the canine heart can reach lengths up to 14 inches, the average length of worms found in feline hearts is only 5 to 8 inches long. • While an adult heartworm can expect to live 5 years in a dog, it will only live 2 to 3 years in a cat, probably due to the cat's strong immune reaction. Heartworm disease in cats is caused by the inflammatory reaction generated by the worm’s presence. In dogs, heartworm disease is mostly about the obstruction of blood flow from the physical size of the worms.
DAN MEAKIN CREATURE FEATURE
Symptoms of Disease Symptoms of infection in cats tend to be more immune-related than heartfailure related. Cats develop more of a lung disease, complete with respiratory distress, and chronic coughing or vomiting. Feline heartworm disease is often misdiagnosed as feline asthma. Sudden death may occur just as it may occur in infected dogs. Heartworm disease is primarily a lung disease in cats, not a heart disease. Diagnostic Testing No single test is reliable for heartworm testing in the cat. The American Heartworm Society currently recommends using both an antigen test and an antibody test for screening apparently healthy cats. If a cat is sick and heartworm disease is suspected, both these tests are recommended, plus chest radiographs and/or echocardiography to assess heart and lung disease.
Treatment Since the major signs of disease in cats are due to inflammation and immune stimulation, a medication such as prednisone can be used to control symptoms. In general, if the cat does not appear sick, the American Heartworm Society recommends attempting to wait out the worm's 2 to 3 year life span and simply monitor chest radiographs every 6 months or so. Prevention The good news is that feline heartworm infection is 100% preventable and there are currently four products on the market that are reliably effective. Revolution® is a product that covers fleas, roundworms, hookworms, and ear mites in addition to preventing heartworm in cats. Uniquely, this product is applied topically rather than orally. The American Heartworm Society recommends monthly preventive for ALL CATS in heartworm endemic areas like Ohio. Dr. Dan Meakin is the owner of All Creatures Animal Hospital, 1894 Ohio Pike in Amelia. Brown County Athletes of the Week RICK PRIDE Rick Pride, a senior at Western Brown High School, led all runners to the finish line in this year’s Bronco 5K Run/Walk held at Western Brown, Aug. 2. Pride posted a winning time of 17:19, placing first of nearly 100 runners. Pride is preparing for his senior season of cross county at Western Brown, aiming to lead his team to a Southern Buckeye Athletic/Academic Conference American Division title.
The Georgetown High School G-Men and Lady GMen, headed by secondyear coach Tony Watson, have been working hard each evening with hopes of finding success this fall. In high school girls’ cross country, the Lady G-Men are out to defend their Southern Athletic/Academic Conference National Division title with the loss of only one runner to graduation, Kylie Watson. Among those back for another season of cross country include juniors Kelsey Crawford, Courtney Wiechmann, Kelsey Miller, and senior Megan Williams. Miller, Williams, and Crawford all earned spots on last year’s SBAAC National Division First Team of runners, while Wiechman earned a spot on the SBAAC National Division Second Team. “I’m pretty confident,” Tony Watson said of the upcoming season. “We have most of our runners back from last year’s team that CONTINUED ON PAGE 15

Ballers compete for Ravye 3-on-3 tourney honors late Ripley grad
BY Wade Linville The Brown County Press
It has been just over two years since Army reservist and 2011 Ripley-UnionLewis-Huntington High School graduate, Ravye Williams, died from injuries sustained in a car accident, but memories of him are still fresh in the minds of those who knew him. Ballers young and old ventured to “Ravye’s Court” in Ripley on July 27
to pay tribute to the late Williams, competing in the annual Ravye Williams Three-on-Three Basketball Tournament, an event to benefit the Ravye Williams Scholarship Fund. It was another heated day of competition, as teams consisting of skilled street ballers took the court to put on quite a show for the large crowd in attendance. In the 11 and under age division, it was the threeon-three team consisting of
players Ryan Boone, Ethan Daniels, and Colton Vaughn that claimed first place. In the 12-14 age division, the team made up of Ryan Mitchell, Scottie Muse, Tykeise Henry, and Jaylen Lofton took first place. Winning the 15-18 age division was the three-onthree team made up of players Camryn Snapp, Chris Staggs, Dee Johnson, and Connor Maddox. Winning the 19 and over age division was the team consisting of Jake Daniels, Trent Arey, Brandon Leedy, and Michael Fossyl.
With just over 40 participating, this year’s Brown County 4-H 5K Run and Fitness Walk held July 26 at the Brown County Fairgrounds in Georgetown was a success. The event has been among the top fundraisers for Brown County 4-H over the years. Winning this year’s race was Murphy Affolder, of St. Louis, MO, who led all runners to the finish line with a time of 17:00. Placing second overall was Rick Pride, a senior at Western Brown High
School, with a finish time of 17:29. Finishing third overall was Jordan Kattine, a senior at Georgetown High School, with a time of 18:25. In the female runners’ division, it was Georgetown grad Kylie Watson finishing first with time of 24:48. Finishing second in the female runners’ division was Allyson McHenry, of Georgetown, with a time of 25:09. Placing third in the female runners’ division was Heather Bertram, of Georgetown, with a time of 25:38.
In the walkers’ division, it was Bob Lodwick, of Williamsburg, placing first with a time of 32:29. Bernie Cropper, of Georgetown, finished second in the walkers’ division with a time of 34:43. Placing third in the walkers’ division was Austin Ingels with a finish time of 49:33. As always, the 4-H 5K Run and Fitness Walk ended with the Kids’ Fun Run, a race around the horse ring at the Brown County Fairgrounds, a race for youngsters in which all those who participated were winners.

Flash 14U Gold baseball team wraps up successful season Submitted news The Brown County Press
The Hamersville Flash 14U Gold Team, coached by Shawn Whisman, had a great finish to their 2014 summer season. The Flash faced tough competition in a tournament at Rumpke Park on July 4 with top teams like the Flames, Cincinnati Baseball Club, At the Yard, Haubner and others. The Flash finished in first place, defeating At the Yard in the finals. The Flash then went on to Lebanon, Tenn. to play in the CABA World Series that had teams from Massachusetts, Seattle, Washington, Georgia,
Tennessee, Ohio and other states across the U.S. The Flash had six pool play games before advancing to the elimination round. The Flash played in the "Pool of Death" as eight seeds in the world series were in their pool. The Flash defeated one of the top select teams of Tennessee, the Showtime Prospects out of the Nashville area. Three of the Flash's losses came to the Tennessee Knights, which won the world series and had a roster of players from five states, and the Tennessee Bruins that finished in second place in the world series. The Flash finished in the
top 12 in the CABA World Series. The Flash then took about a week off and competed in a tournament in Hillsboro, where they finished in second place. The Flash had another outstanding season and finished first or second place in every tournament they played in, with the exception of a few tournaments like the world series (where they finished in the top 12. The Flash 14U team was scheduled to hold a tryout on Aug. 10 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the Flash Complex just outside of Hamersville. Anyone interested in the tryout can call head coach Shawn Whisman at (513) 532-4408.

In the Diamond Cut Lawn Care Tuneup for the Ike Moler Memorial Race in two weeks, it was $1,500 to the winner of the Mt. Orab Ford Late Model Feature event on Aug. 1 at Moler Raceway Park. In single lap qualifications, it was Chad Stapleton of Edinburgh, Ind. claiming the overall fast time with a 12.458 lap. In heat race action, it was Jackson, Ohio's Jason Montgomery, Fayetteville's Mike Meyers, and Bradford's Wayne Chinn claiming heat race victories and setting the lineup for the 30 lap feature event. At the drop of the green flag, it was Chinn in the Erwin Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge Machine out to the top spot with Myers in close pursuit. A caution on lap eight for Mike Hildebrand spinning in turn four would slow the pace, and it was quickly followed by a couple of other minor spins. A restart on lap nine would make things interesting as Meyers would jump the cushion and make contact with the outside wall in turn two, ending his night. On the restart, it was still Chinn out front with Montgomery now in second. De-
spite some challenges late Chinn would claim his first win at MRP in over two years in his first visit of the season. Montgomery would come home second with Nick Latham, Roger Ruark, and James Rice completing the top five positions. The UMP modifieds would see 17 cars take the green flag and it was Aurora, Indiana's Matt Hamilton claiming his third straight feature win in his OTS, Varsitee Screenprinting, House Engines sponsored Lightning Chassis. It wasn't easy, as Adam Stricker and Josh Rice were both hot on his tail bouncing off the cushion in close pursuit. Dave McWilliams would come home fourth with Ryan Morton in fifth position in a race that went green to checker with no cautions. Hamilton and McWilliams won heat races while John Baker won the Diamond Cut Lawn Care Dash event. In the Tarvin Auto Service Chevette Division, it was once again Rusty Yarger in the Northwest Transmission, Weavers Garage, Dreadland Haunted Woods sponsored machine taking the win. Mike Clark would come home second with Kyle Tarvin, Dustyn Fisher, and Josh Davis completing the top five spots.
Yarger was the heat races winner while Fisher was victorious in the Diamond Cut Lawn Care Dash event. In the DRC.net Crazy Compacts, it was another fine field of cars on hand and at the green flag it appeared as if T.J. Dalton was going to claim yet another checkered flag as he led the early laps of the feature from his pole position start. Lap seven would see things take a change as both Dalton and 3rd place Bubba Gibson would have flat tires and following quick changes would restart from the tail. On the restart, it was all Pleasant Plain's Dillan Harris out front as he would go on and claim his first ever feature win at MRP following numerous close calls in previous events. Kevin Penick would come home second with Chris Shelton, Sr. (from last starting spot), T.J. Dalton and Brian Gilardi completing the top five spots. In the final event of the night, it was the Diamond Cut Lawn Care Sport Mods in action and it was Mitchell Fields claiming his second win on the season while Chris Shelton, Jr., Jerry Florence, Jr., and Jimmy Spillman would complete the field. Fields was also victorious in the heat race.

Former female high school soccer standouts returned to Western Brown High School’s Kibler Stadium/LaRosa’s Field on Tuesday evening to compete once again. won the league, so we are looking forward to it.” The Georgetown High School varsity boys’ cross country team are looking for big improvements this season after finishing fourth in the league last year. Look for seniors Jordan Kattine and Matthew Williams to lead the way for the G-Men in the upcoming season after earning spots on the SBAAC National Division First Team last fall,
while there are also three skilled sophomore runners on the return. Sophomore Christian Linville missed the SBAAC National Division Second team by just over five seconds as a freshman last year, and has been working hard toward improving his time in the 5K during the offseason. Chris Dietrick and Tanner Householder are also two sophomores who will aid the G-Men in the upcoming season. “We have more experi-

Western Brown’s varsity girls’ soccer coach, Dan Silvis, is looking forward to the upcoming fall season with an experienced crew of skilled players on the return, and some talented young players taking the field. “I think we will be in the mix for a league championship this year,” said Silvis. “I don’t usually say that, but I have a lot of confidence in this group.”

team in an exciting match. Western Brown’s Kenzi Young scored the first goal of the evening to give the Western Brown varsity girls’ soccer squad a 1-0 lead, but a goal by Olson late in the first half would tie the game at one apiece. Backed by some dazzling saves by Western Brown goalkeeper, Danielle Quittschreiber, the current Lady Bronco varsity team managed to keep the game close. At the end of the first half, the two teams remained knotted at one. Goals came more often in the second half, and the alumni team would fire for three goals after Quittschreiber was relieved at the goalkeeper position to

He is also pleased to have a skilled crew of junior high boys on the return from a successful 2013 season.

Landowner liability meeting scheduled
Join the Brown County Farm Bureau and the Brown County Soil and Water Conservation District on Thursday, August 21st for a program discussing landowner liability when people use property for recreational purposes. The meeting will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Mt. Orab Library located at 613 South High Street, Mt. Orab OH 45154. Often we hear a landowner is hesitant to allow other people to use property because he/she is concerned about lawsuits in the event of an accident.
EB FFA to hold truck/tractor tug pull
The Eastern Brown FFA Alumni is holding their second annual truck and tractor tug pull on August 15 and 16. The pull will be held at Eastern High School with the truck pull weigh in starting at 6 p.m. and pulls starting at 7 p.m. on Friday night. The tractor weigh in starts at 9:30 a.m. and the pulls start at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. Please join us in raising funds that will benefit the Eastern Brown FFA members. If you have any questions please contact Derek Clifton at (937) 515-1229.
Ohio’s law has safety precautions to protect landowners. We will review how the law can protect you, as well as the responsibilities both landowners and recreational users have when hunting, fishing or similar activities are taking place. Speakers will include an attorney from Ohio Farm Bureau and personnel from the ODNR – Division of Wildlife. If you have questions, please contact either the Brown County SWCD at 937-378-4424 or Brown County Farm Bureau at 937-378-2212.
Beekeepers to meet
