Western Brown FFA travels to Texas BY Kayla Wilson WB FFA Reporter As part of this year's annual Career Success Tour, the Western Brown FFA chapter took 6 students to Texas to explore various career opportunities in the agricultural industry. To attend, sophomores had to apply and go through an interview process. This year's attendees included Maddie Cox, Haley Strasinger, Lanie Clark, Bryar Cornett, Kellan Pinkerton and Robbie Gray. Thanks to the generous support of the community, the Western Brown FFA Alumni and the Brown County Pork Producers Association, students got to experience this trip of a lifetime with minimal out-of-pocket expenses. The group flew into Dallas on July 14th and traveled more than 1,200 miles visiting companies and schools such as
Graham Land & Cattle, Texas A&M, Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center, Texas Beef House/Capitol Angus, Priefert Manufacturing, Eden Green Technology, Seville Farms, Freshpoint Dallas, Fort Worth Stockyards and even the Texas FFA State Convention. When asked about the experience, chapter president Robbie Gray had this to say: "It was really cool to see just how diverse agriculture is and also to learn about the endless career opportunities that exist in the industry.". After the trip students said they have a new found respect for where their food comes from and all the steps it takes to get it to the dinner table. Because of this experience, these 6 are now interested in careers in livestock nutrition, manufacturing/welding, horticulture, agriculture sales & marketing and vet-

Enjoy history with ʻThe Pioneersʼ BY Stan Purdy One of the issues that led to the American Revolution was the proclamation by King George III that American colonists could not settle in lands north of the Ohio River. Despite the area being Indian Territory, colonists, especially New Englanders, coveted the rich farm land that would become the Northwest Territory. In the Treaty of Paris, Great Britain succeeded the land east of the Mississippi River to the United States government, thus opening the Midwest to settlement. Pulitzer Prize winning author, David McCullough, in his new book, “The Pioneers” has written an interesting, informational, and exciting account of the set-
tlement of Ohio that became the 18th state and the first state of the Northwest Territory. In the pages of the book we discover Mannaseh Cutler, a lawyer, doctor and pioneer who lobbied Congress to pass the Northwest Ordinance in 1787. He then traveled down the Ohio River and founded Marietta, Ohio which was the first settlement in the Northwest Territory. Indians did not welcome the settlers and were a challenge until the Battle of Fallen Timbers, won by General Anthony Wayne in 1794. Education being a requirement of the settlers, Mannaseh Cutler’s son, Ephraim Cutler founded Ohio University. Thus, the Athens college has Cutler
Hall. McCullough is a great historian, researches his topic thoroughly, and writes in an easily read prose. “The Pioneer” is receiving attention and praise
and is a best seller on the New York Times book list. The book can be obtained from the Georgetown branch of the Brown County Library.
