THE NEWS DEMOCRAT Music Fest to return next year The Ohana Music Fest at the Mt. Orab Auto Mall is coming back next year. “We can’t share the date quite yet because we are still putting things together,” said Producer of Special Events Michelle Meenach. “We will make that information available as soon as we can.” Meenach said that she felt that the event was a huge success. “The feedback we have gotten from people in the community has been absolutely fantastic. The support that we have received from the community, the volunteers and the staff has been great.” Regarding plans for next year Meenach said, “We are going to add an aspect in for the kids. Everyone was very happy with the event, but they said that there wasn’t anything for their kids to do, so we are going to work on that for next year.” She added that there will
be a wider variety of food vendors and that “The entertainment is to be determined. We have a long list to choose from and once we solidify a date, we will see what options we have.” Meenach also said she was very grateful for all the help that was contributed by everyone. “The volunteer groups that we had from Western Brown High School were absolutely fantastic. They did everything we asked of them. The level of support was just overwhelming.” Mt. Orab Mayor Bruce Lunsford said he was pleased with the event as well. “It was an overwhelmingly positive experience. Everywhere I go, people have nothing but good things to say about the event,” Lunsford said. Mount Orab Auto Mall Owner Mark Williams said “We probably had an excess of 15,000 people there throughout the event.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 10
Disposal plan for medical records BY Wayne Gates Attorneys for the receiver in charge of the former Southwest Regional Medical Center are recommending that 10,000 boxes of medical records still at the hospital be held for thirty days and then destroyed. New Growth Advisors Receiver Sumner Saeks asked Common Pleas Judge Scott Gusweiler for permission on August 10 to sell the hospital property in Georgetown at auction. Gusweiler declined to authorize the sale, partly over
concerns about the medical records that are still in the building. He told Saeks and his attorneys that he would not authorize the sale of the building without a plan for final disposition of the records. That plan was delivered to the court on Sept. 12. In it, the attorneys cover the records disposal procedures called for under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA), other federal regulations and Ohio law. BY Wayne Gates Ten people were indicted by a Brown County Grand Jury on Sept. 8. Brian Armstrong, 33 of Georgetown, was indicted on 292 counts of child pornography possession. Brown County First Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Zac Corbin said that the reason for the number of charges is that each item of child pornography is charged as a separate of-
fense. The investigation began when authorities in Brown County were contacted by a detective in northern Ohio who works for the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. A full report on Armstong’s case is in the Sept. 15 edition of the News Democrat. Clarence Jones, III, 65 of Sardinia, is charged with seven drug related counts, CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

Hatching a teaching moment
On the farm, from day to day, you are truly never for certain what events will take place like this incident. Back in the spring I purchased five barred rock chickens for my Outdoor Classroom kids to view. For those unfamiliar with the term, “barred rock, ” it is a breed that resembles a piece of black and white checked gingham fabric. In that purchase, I bought four pullets—a young hen just starting to lay eggs. Their eggs, initially, are significantly smaller than the older hens. And this breed lays brown ones. And though I had no plans to have baby chicks, I got a rooster, meaning…. well everyone knows what that means, right? It means at daybreak I will hear the familiar, "Cock-a-doodledo. It’s a new day, time to get up,” crow. For that reason, and only, that reason, I got a rooster with my girls, but wh at follows I totally wasn’t expecting. On the farm, chickens and eggs go hand in hand. I love gathering eggs and so does Avah, my granddaughter, a carbon copy of myself—lover of farm animals and Nature. Much to my surprise, one day, in August, as we opened the nesting box door to gather the eggs, one of the hens was still on the nest, puffed up and

purring when I started to reach under her for the eggs. “ Oh my goodness,” I said to Avah. “Want to know what that means?” Of course she said with enthusiasm, “What?” I smiled, “It means she wants to set on these eggs and hatch baby chicks.” Of course, those who have raised chickens know I could have easily foiled her plan by taking the eggs away and removing her from the nest until she gave up on the idea. After all, spring was well past when most hens hatch baby chicks. But for Nature’s sake and especially for my granddaughter’s education, I decided to let Nature take its course. When the hen had eight eggs under her, I marked the calendar “setting.” Counted forward 21 days and wrote, “hatch.” As instructed, Avah put an “X” on each egg so if the other hens rooted her from her nest, we could remove their new egg. When the first hatch occurred, (go figure, two days pr ior than my calendar entry,) she tried to corral him back to the nest,
but it kept wandering off. Knowing her job of keeping it warm as well as the nest of eggs she must have been torn as to what to do. I could see how those other eggs would soon chill and the eight-egg hatch would become a one-egg hatch if I didn’t intervene. In the kitchen, (where everything cool happens in a farmhouse) I made a make shi ft brooder with a cardboard box lined with newspaper and a small light bulb. I stole the chick and brought it to the house. Every morning, even before I had my coffee, I scurried to the hen house to check for more chicks. “We have another one,” became the phrase of the day. All told, one-by-one it took eight days for all the chicks to hatch. (Go figure!) By the time the last one hatched the older ones had little checkered tail and wing feathers growing in such a short time. Some would have said, “I have no time for this, let alone maintaining a make shift brooder, or having it on my kitchen counter top!” But I tell you, “What an education you would miss out on. I wasn’t doing it for me…I was doing it for the poor hen and the grandkids education, and for Nature’s sake.” Now, that we had a suc-
cessful hatch with no casualties, it was time to return them to their momma. We made a special nursery box from a large dog kennel box. At first she pecked at her babies, especially the older ones, but soon became welcoming by puffing up, walking gingerly trying to gather them with a low, continuous clucking. That evening, before bed, I dashed out to check on them, one more time. I couldn’t see any chicks since she was nestled in the straw and puffed up twice her size in the back corner, where they were keeping warm. “Good girl,” I told her. And as I closed the door I marveled, “And no one had to tell her how to do it. She just knew!” I don’t know why the hen went broody in the Fall as opposed to the Spring as usual, but I couldn’t be any happier for the education it bestowed upon us and to have been an instrument in the miracle of birth (or hatch in this instance.) The miracle of life, to this farm girl, always is, absolutely amazing! Sherry is a regular contributor to the Press. She writes Take Joy! places like China. Now talking about misleading ads I bet you have heard about the States rainy day fund that was reduced from $1 billion to 89 cents. Remember the great recession in 2008 that rainy day fund was used to balance the state budget. Now I think that is what a rainy day fund is supposed to be used for. Governor Strickland did many things to save our state. Some have said that if he hadn't Ohio would have seen a $7 billion deficit. Danny Books Sr.

Though her smile is gone forever, And her hand I cannot touch, I still have so many memories, Of the one I loved so much. Her memory is my keepsake, With which I’ll never part. God has her in His keeping, I have her in my heart. Sadly missed, but never forgotten.

CALMED AND TAMED Today if you will, turn to Mark chapter 5 and let's review the story of the maniac of Gadara. Verse 1 begins with Jesus and His disciples crossing over the Sea of Galilee: "And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him. And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones." You can't help but have a heart of compassion for this man. He was living in the tombs of the graveyard, running around naked and cutting himself with stones, all because this devil had control of his life. Verse 6: "But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him." To worship him meant that he fell or bowed down at Jesus' feet. Verse 7: "And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not." This devil was talking through the man and he addressed Jesus as the Son of the most high God! This devil knew Jesus! There are things going on in the spirit world that you and I do not have a clue about. This devil addressed Jesus by name and recognized His authority! He knew that Jesus had power over him. The conversation between this unclean spirit and Jesus continued and Jesus told him: "...Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many." Jesus was not addressing the man. He was talking directly to this devil which was in the man.
REV. TED R. HOUSE BIBLE BAPTIST CHURCH MT. ORAB www.bbcmtorab.com Everyone thought that this man was crazy. Because of this unclean spirit, he had phenomenal strength and could not be tamed. But yet, this devil had to bow down to Jesus. Ephesians 1:20-21, tells us that after God the Father raised Jesus from the dead He: "... set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come." Jesus has all power and authority over principalities and dominions, and that is the realm in which this story was taking place. In chapter 4 verse 41 after Jesus had calmed the storm they asked the question: "...What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?" Well, even this devil knew that Jesus is the Son of the most high God! Notice that Jesus was carrying on this conversation with just one unclean spirit, but after asking him his name the unclean spirit said: "...My name is Legion: for we are many." You see, what happens when someone allows one devil to make a breech in his defense, the whole lot of them can enter in. A legion is between 2 and 5 thousand. But even at that, they all had to obey Jesus. They had to asked permission to stay in that country after they had to come out of the man! Verse 15 tells us that when the people of the city came and saw the man that he was: "...sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind..." How great is our Savior! No one could tame the maniac of Gadara, but Jesus did! And, Jesus can help you too!

Vera died peacefully at home on Sept. 9, 2016, surrounded by the love of her family. She is survived by her children: Matthew Hoffman of Fairfield, OH; Lara (Jeremey) Smith of Milford, OH; and Scott (Catherine) Hoffman of Lewis Center, OH. Her proud legacy continues with her grandchildren: Sheila and Jillian Smith; Ian, Liam, and Jude Hoffman; nephews Michael Kerwood and David Kerwood, and nieces Denise Paviol and Teresa Robbins. Preceding her in Heaven are her parents, Wilbur and Lou Sara Holman, sister Mary Kay Kerwood, and husband Clarence W. Hoffman. Faith, hope, family, and love were the cornerstones of her life. Despite living with serious health issues since childhood, she found strength in the Christian faith to fight through 4 battles with cancer and countless other procedures. Inspired by the nurses that helped save her at the age of 16, she began a lifelong career devoted to healthcare - both as a Certified Registered Nurse of more than 45 years and as an Educator who helped to inspire and shape the careers of future Nurses. Even after retiring to care for her health, she continued to help others as a Stephen Minister; listening to people and helping them find their own faith-based strength. She inspired all those around her; whether as a colleague, a devoted Christian or a cherished friend. Most important to Vera, above all else, was family. As a devoted mother, caring grandmother, and a beloved aunt, Vera will always be a guiding presence. Thanks to her hard work, gentle leadership, sense of humor, and enduring love, the family she helped to build continues to grow and flourish. She believed that with faith, as small as a mustard seed, one could move mountains and change the world - and that’s just what she did. Though she will be missed, she will always be here with us. Visitation on Friday, 9/16/16 from 5-8 PM at Ogle & Paul R. Young Funeral Home - Hamilton, 3950 Pleasant Ave., Hamilton, OH. Tommy Jay Davis passed away following a long illness. Both of his daughters were by his side. Tom, TJ, Happy, or Bird as he was known by various friends and family was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Nell Davis of Peebles. He is survived by his brother ,Ted Davis of Columbia, SC; sister Mary Marlene Skinner of Columbus; daughter Deborah Davis Parlier and son-in-law Ron Neely of Peebles; daughter Donna Treboni of Waverly; grandchildren Domenic and Alex Treboni of Columbus, and Amanda Parlier of Atlanta, Ga.; as well as many nieces and nephews. Tom was loved by many friends and family members. Some people remember him as spirited, fun-loving and lively, others remember him as quiet and methodical with a quirky sense of humor. Some recall him as stern at times, but with a deeply loving and generous nature, others still remember him as all of these and more. Whether loved ones knew him nearer the beginning of his life, nearer the end, or across all the years in between, they will miss him dearly. However, they take comfort in knowing that perhaps he is somewhere with his mother, enjoying the sights of Cardinals and Red Maples, the sounds of his favorite classic rock, or simply once again taking a walk in the country. Regardless, he is free. Fly high, Free Bird.

Brown County Juvenile Court and all schools in Brown County have joined a nationwide effort to celebrate Attendance Awareness Month in September and pledged to raise awareness about the value of regular school attendance. Eastern, Western, Fayetteville-Perry, RipleyUnion Lewis- Huntington, Georgetown and Southern Hills CTC have each focused on reducing chronic absenteeism in the new school year. It is recognized that good attendance is essential to academic success, but far too many students are at risk academically
because they are chronically absent. Chronic absence is described as missing 10 percent of the school year—or about 15 days – for any reason, excused or unexcused. That’s the point at which absenteeism begins to affect student performance, research shows. Chronic absence disproportionately affects children from low-income families and communities of color, creating attendance gaps that exacerbate achievement gaps in local schools. This is not just a matter of truancy. Many children, especially in the early grades, miss too much school because of
chronic health problems, unreliable transportation or housing moves—barriers that agencies and community partners can help families address. “This matters to all of us, not just those with school-age children,” James Frazier, Superintendent of Brown County Educational Service Center said, “Schools that graduate more students on time make our communities and our economy stronger. We will have more people who are prepared for the workplace and more engaged in our community’s civic life.” “We know that we will never narrow the achieve-
ment gap or reduce our dropout rate until we bring this problem under control, and that means starting early,” James Frazier, Superintendent said. “All our efforts to improve curriculum and instruction won’t matter much if kids aren’t in school.” Juvenile Court Judge Danny Bubp said, “When I was elected as your Juvenile Court Judge, I vowed to be the ultimate protector of our children. One of the most important predictors of the future success of children is a quality education. All too often children are being deprived of this all important right; be it by their own actions or the ac-
A resurfacing project is scheduled to begin on U.S. 52, with crews paving the route from Hanover Street in Ripley to the western corporation limit of Aberdeen. Construction also includes repairs to the approaches of the overpass (U.S. 62) to the William Harsha Bridge. Throughout the project, traffic will be maintained in one lane with the use of flaggers, and all work is anticipated to be completed in midfall. Preliminary work is under way on S.R. 32 for an emergency culvert replacement project. During construction, the route will be reduced to one lane in each direction between the Brown-Clermont County line and C.R. 101 (Eastwood Road), near Mt. Orab, with bi-directional traffic will be maintained
in either the west or the eastbound lanes by way of a crossover. The project is anticipated to be completed by mid-November. C.R. 50 (Bethlehem Road) is closed for a bridge replacement project. The project site is located between C.R. 14A (DecaturEckmansville Road) and T.R. 223 (Rickey Road), and while the route is closed, motorists will be detoured via T.R. 223 (Rickey Road), T.R. 61 (Hughes Road) and C.R. 14A (Decatur-Eckmansville Road). The project is scheduled to be completed in early fall. U.S. 50 is subject to single-lane restrictions between the Clermont and the Highland County lines for a resurfacing project. The project also includes rehabilitating bridges located between T.R. 100
(Woodard Road) and T.R. 80462 (River Reach Road) and between C.R. 12 (Fayetteville-Blanchester Road) and the corporation limit of Fayetteville. Throughout construction, traffic will be maintained in one lane with the use of flaggers when crews are at work, and the project is expected to be completed in early fall. A culvert rehabilitation project is under way on U.S. 68, and crews will be installing a culvert liner at the route’s 40.91-mile marker, immediately north of T.R. 581 (Ohio Street) at the southern corporation limit of Fayetteville. As most work will be conducted off the roadway, there should be little to no impact to motorists throughout construction. U.S. 52 is reduced to one, 12-foot lane between
C.R. 307 (Old A&P Road) and T.R. 255 (Pisgah Hill Road) for a slide repair project. Throughout construction, traffic will be maintained with temporary signals, and all work is anticipated to be completed in early October. A resurfacing project is under way on S.R. 125, from the Brown-Clermont County line to the 6.4-mile marker between T.R. 402 (Gillette Station Road) and C.R. 18 (Eden Road). The project also includes paving a small section of S.R. 125 immediately east of C.R. 15 (George Miller Road). Throughout construction, traffic will be maintained in one lane with the use of flaggers and/or temporary signals, and the project is scheduled to be completed in midsummer.

tendance gaps and work with community partners to improve school attendance starting as soon as children enter school. September is a particularly good time to focus on attendance,” said Hedy Chang, director of Attendance Works, a national nonprofit dedicated to improve school attendance “Research shows that students who miss two to four days in the first month of school are more likely to become chronically absent during the school year. By paying attention to absences early in the school year and early in a child’s academic career, we can turn around attendance and achievement.” During Attendance Awareness Month, we are asking school leaders, community advocates, parents and students to act upon these critical first steps to help stem chronic absenteeism: • Build a habit and a culture of regular attendance • Use data to determine when and with whom chronic absence is a problem, and • Identify and address barriers to getting children to school. Study after study shows that chronic absence is an early warning indicator that a student will drop out of a high school. A recent study found that a student who was chronically absent in any year between eighth and 12th grade was 7.4 times more likely to drop out than students with better attendance.

Our newest employee is one of my hirings and I’m very passionate about her, she’s a good girl.” Hatcher told members of the chamber that adults with disabilities are loyal, they rarely miss work, they are hard working and dedicated employees. He said that these employees don’t take their
jobs for granted. “I think maybe most of us feel like we’re entitled to have a job,” Hatcher said, “That’s all we’ve experienced all our lives. But when these employees get their first job, and they receive that pay check for the first time, it is a blessing to see, and experience.” In other actions at the chamber meeting, president of the chamber Brian Elliott told those in attendance he is looking to fill chairs for the economic development committee, the communications on public relations committee and the workforce development committee. Elliott reminded chamber members that there were still

Council later scheduled Trick or Treat night for Monday, Oct. 31 between 6 and 7:30 p.m. Administrator Tim Mock reported that the fire department would finally be ordering new computers and printers for their department. “The Fire Department is currently taking part in a 30-day free trial of a program called E-Dispatch,” Miller explained, “It’s a special computer program that when a call goes out, it automatically rings the firefighter’s cell phone so they don’t have to share pagers. “The pagers are about $350 each, and the cost for the E-Dispatch is $1,100 a year. The department does not have enough pagers for all their employees.” Council also agreed to contract with Lykins Oil to provide the village with propane for the new furnace. Council passed a resolution describing services to be provided by village to property owners included in a 233.605 acre annexation. On Aug. 27 the Village of Sardinia held it’s first Car and Truck Show. The Receivers Memorandum to Gusweiler reads “...if medical records are not collected by the patient, insurance carrier or federal agency, then the trustee my destroy the medical records...” The memorandum recommends to Gusweiler that the procedure should be “The Receiver promptly notify appropriate federal agencies of insurance carriers of the availability of depositing the records with those parties within 30 days of the letter, The Receiver publish notice in a publication of local circulation and the Cincinnati Enquirer providing for patients to contact the Receiver within 30 days of publication to claim the records or they will be destroyed, (and) The Receiver, after expiration of the 30-day time periods, will (1) shred or burn medical records and destroy the electronic records.” The memorandum also lays out the cost of storing the records rather than destroying them. “If the Receiver were to arrange for the records to be stored for four years and then destroyed, the cost would be around $192,073.60,” the memorandum states. Two things must happen
before the 30 day clock for destruction of the records would begin. First, Gusweiler must approve the plan and order the Receiver to proceed. Second, the required letters to federal agencies and insurance carriers would have to be sent out. Gusweiler is also yet to rule on whether the property can be sold at auction and other considerations of the sale. When the dust cleared and the final whistle was sounded, it was the Rockets coming away with a 5-0 victory to mark their second win of the season and up their record to 2-1-1 in SHAC play. Not only were the Rockets backed by a sturdy defense led by goalkeeper junior goalkeeper Nick Baldwin who recorded the shutout, but also playing key roles in the shutout victory were senior defenders Nic Ball, Greg Kable, and Christian Hansel. On the offensive end, ex-

Kirchner and Connor finished with two goals apiece to lead Fayetteville scorers. Craig scored Fayetteville's first goal of the day less than 11 minutes into the contest to give the Rockets an early 1-0 lead. Nine minutes into the game, it was Eastern junior Cassidy Staggs scoring a header-goal off a nicely placed corner kick from sophomore teammate Morgan Reynolds to lift the Lady Warriors to a 2-0 lead. Week 3 football roundup
Kade Houston takes a carry for a big gain in the Southern Buckeye Warriors’ Sept. 9 battle against Middletown Christian.
Rockets rise to 2-1 with win over Finneytown
BY Wade Linville The Brown County Press
The Fayetteville-Perry Rockets rebounded from their week two loss to Bethel-Tate to dominate for a 48-0 victory over Finneytown, while the Western Brown Broncos and the Southern Buckeye Warriors would each suffer losses in week three on the gridiron. “The players responded well by improving on some things that were a struggle with the previous week,” Fayetteville-Perry head football coach Kevin Finch said following the Rockets' week three win. “The offensive line created big holes all night long behind Tay Call, Garhett Thompson, Andy Smith, Ryan Shaw, and Nate Parks; while Chase Jester ran for 221 yards on 22 carries and three touchdowns. Austin Brockman added 62 yards on eight carries when he wasn't blocking for Chase Jester. Luke Wiederhold (quarterback) threw for a touchdown and ran for another touchdown and had a 140.6 passing rating. The defense pitched a shutout while not allowing a passing yard.” The week three win moved the Rockets to 11th in Division VI, Region 24 standings. The Rockets are scheduled to take on the 2-1 Williamsburg Wildcats while on the road in week four on the gridiron Sept. 23, and they will begin Ohio Valley Athletic League play on Sept. 23, as they play host to Hillcrest Academy. The Rockets are out to repeat as OVAL champs after winning the league in 2015 in their first year of competing in league play. The Southern Buckeye Warriors are taking their lumps in their first year of varsity program, the first
ever high school team fielded by the Southern Buckeye Youth Football League in Brown County. But with their bumps and bruises comes improvement for the team in which more than 90-percent of their players have no high school football experience. Coming off a 38-8 loss to the West Union Dragons to start the season, the Warriors returned to the gridiron at Koehler Field outside of Russellville on Friday, Sept. 9 to host Middletown Christian. The Warriors would trail 39-0 at halftime to end up suffering a 46-0 loss in their second varsity game ever, but on a positive note it was a valuable learning experience for the Southern Buckeye high school team. “We took a hard beating but there were some improvements,” said Southern Buckeye varsity head coach Chris Tomlin following the Warriors' bout against Middletown Christian. “In the second half we played much better defensively. Our goal coming out in the second half was to hold them (Middletown Christian) scoreless for the rest of the game, and we almost accomplished that goal.” The Warriors would give up only one touchdown in the second half after giving up 39 in the first half of play. The Warriors were plagued by penalties in their first game of the season against the West Union Dragons, but they were able to cut down significantly on the number of flags thrown in game two. “Each week there are small improvements,” said Tomlin. “Our offensive line is starting to understand pass protection. Our tackling is getting better. Each week they have made small progressions and are getting a better understanding of high school football. We have a lot of nice talent and when they start to do their individual jobs we will find success as a team. As a
coach, my main focus right now is that I want these boys to fall in love with the game of football.” The Western Brown Broncos suffered a 35-19 loss at Ross High School in week three to mark their second loss of the season. The Broncos dropped to an overall record of 1-2 with the week three loss after falling to Little Miami 28-26 in a road game during week two on Sept. 2. The Broncos trailed Ross 21-7 at halftime. The Broncos were able to cut the lead to 21-13, but another touchdown by Ross would leave the Broncos trailing 28-13 at the end of the third quarter. The Broncos were able to cap off an 85-yard offensive drive with a short touchdown run by Zach Stacy in the fourth quarter to cut the Ross lead to 2819. The Broncos remained within striking distance until another Ross touchdown later in the fourth quarter widened the margin just enough to rule out any chances of a Western Brown victory. Stacy led Bronco rushers in week three, taking 19 carries for a total of 81 yards to bring his total rushing to 305 yards on the season. Stacy has recorded six touchdowns in three games. Western Brown quarterback Seth Becker completed 15-of-24 passes against Ross for a total of 239 passing yards, bringing his total to 848 passing years on the season. The Ross offense totaled 357 yards, while the Bronco offense totaled 345 yards. Among the Broncos' leading receivers this season are Wyatt Fischer (358 yards), Carson Eyre (157 yards), and Jacob Daniel (148 yards). The Broncos were on the road again in week four Sept. 16, as they take on Jackson with hopes of upping their overall record to 2-2.
the muzzleloader season was moved to Jan. 7-10, 2017. Overall, deer populations are slightly higher than last year, and the statewide deer harvest could increase 5 to 10 percent. The statewide bag limit is six deer. Deer bag limits are determined by county (see bag limit map), and hunters cannot exceed a county bag limit. No more than six deer may be taken from all counties when combined. Additional ODNR Division of Wildlife authorized controlled hunting opportunities do not count against statewide or county bag limits. Hunters may harvest only one buck in Ohio, regardless of method of take or location. Shotguns and straightwalled cartridge rifles may have no more than three
shells in the magazine and chamber combined while deer hunting. Deer hunting hours are 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes past sunset for all deer seasons. This includes gun and muzzleloader seasons. Additional details about deer hunting rules are contained in the 2016-2017 Ohio Hunting Regulations, available where licenses are sold or at wildohio.gov. Licenses and permits can be purchased online at wildohio.gov and at hundreds of participating agents throughout the state. The ODNR Division of Wildlife remains committed to properly managing Ohio’s deer populations through a combination of regulatory and programmatic changes.
Get your hunting license: Archery season coming soon
Hunters will have their first opportunity to pursue white-tailed deer when archery season opens on Saturday, Sept. 24, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).
Ohio’s 2016-2017 deer seasons include: • Archery: Sept. 24-Feb. 5, 2017 • Youth gun: Nov. 19-20 • Gun: Nov. 28-Dec. 4 and Dec. 17-18 • Muzzleloader: Jan. 7-10, 2017 Deer hunters will find the hunting regulations similar to last year, and county bag limits and antlerless permit use remain unchanged from last year. The dates of the two-day gun season were moved to Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 17-18, and

Lady Broncos stand at 5-2
BY Wade Linville The Brown County Press
The Western Brown Lady Broncos stood at an overall record of 5-2 after claiming a 4-1 victory over New Richmond on Sept. 1, but then falling to Amelia and Anderson in match-ups that followed. The Lady Broncos suf-
fered a 4-0 loss to the Amelia Barons at Western Brown High School on Sept. 7, marking their first league loss of the season to drop to a record of 4-1 in Southern Buckeye Athletic/Academic Conference American Division play. The Lady Broncos were on the road Sept. 8, suffering a non-league loss to An-
derson for their second loss of the season. The Lady Broncos were scheduled to take on the Hillsboro Lady Indians in a non-league contest on the road Sept. 15, and they return home on Monday, Sept. 19 to host the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs for a non-league bout.

Think about your favorite restaurant. What do you like about it? Just as the management of a restaurant creates enticing features and menu items that keep you coming back, you can turn your yard into an attractive bistro for butterflies as well. Authors, Jason Neumann and Molly Sterling’s tips for attracting butterflies include: Advertise: Make your flower beds easy to locate by planting flowers in large diverse groups. Create ambiance: Provide shelter from the wind as well as cover such as shrubs, shade trees and log piles. Place landing pads and sunbathing perches in open, sunny areas. Stay “open” all season: Grow nectar plants that bloom throughout the season to provide tasty nectar options for butterflies from spring through fall. Offer something for everyone: The bill of fare of plants you offer should cater to all different tastes, including both a “main menu” of nectar plants for
adult butterflies and a “kids’ menu” of host plants for caterpillars. Select flowers that vary in color, height and structure to attract a variety of butterfly species: Stick with wild strains of native plants. Cultivated varieties of native plants are sometimes select4ed based on ornamental traits, not their usefulness as nectar plants. Avoid varieties whose flowers are radically different in shape or color. Openpollinated natives are also more genetically diverse than cultivars making them more resistant to disease. Satisfy caterpillars with a customized “Kids’ Menu”: Caterpillars, like human children, are picky eaters. Host plants provide larval butterflies with nutrients, energy, and sometimes even protection from predators. Each caterpillar species will feed on a select few plant species. Monarchs need milkweed and the spicebush swallowtails require sassafras or spicebush. There are countless caterpillar-host relationships that might appear in a well-planted garden.
With a good design, your backyard bistro will be filled with colorful flowers and elegantly-dressed butterfly guests. Interested in learning more about what you can plant in your garden to attract butterflies and other pollinators? Go to the Ohioline website and search for “Attracting Pollinators to the Garden” and “Giant Caterpillars”. Do you have an area in your landscape that needs some up-dating? Take a walk and make some notes in your garden journal, or take some photographs. Then get out your pencil and graph paper and design your own butterfly bistro! It’s time to mark your calendars for the September 22, 2016 garden seminar being hosted by the OSUE Brown County Master Gardener Volunteers. Chris McCullough, President of the Cincinnati Chapter of Wild Ones, will present the program, Getting Started: A Beginner’s Guide to Natural Landscaping in Your Own Backyard. All seminars are free and open to the public and are

Southern Hills CTC staff and students were able to partake on a tour of the facility, gain an understanding of the operations, and learn what it takes to manage a thriving business in the community. With Nick Iknayan as Plant Manager, Southern
Hills CTC and Stanley Tools has struck up a mutual partnership. Through this new founded relationship, Stanley Tools and Southern Hills CTC seeks to build upon each other’s strengths to assist in student development, new advancements in manufacturing/welding, and to help develop the future of skilled workforce. Principal Guy Hopkins said, “Southern Hills CTC and Stanley Tools have agreed to work on joint projects over the course of this year, and we believe this the beginning to a long lasting relationship to improve the workforce of Brown County.” Look for more projects and initiatives out of this

Adams County Regional Medical Center (ACRMC) recently began a partnership with Stratus Video to provide language interpretation 24 hours a day. Stratus Video connects patients at ACRMC with a medically qualified interpreter in more than 200 languages over video call on iPads. Anyone who struggles to speak and understand English will be able to connect with their medical providers easily through the Stratus Video system. Through its state-of-theart technology, Stratus empowers the staff at ACRMC to touch an iPad and – within 30 seconds – provide non English speaking patients direct eye contact with someone who
speaks their language. “Stratus Video is changing the way patients and medical professionals communicate across all areas of health care,” said Rachel Cummings, CNO at ACRMC. “We’re thrilled to be working alongside a company that is focused on providing world-class patient care through highly innovative technology.” “We are proud of Stratus’s new partnership with ACRMC and we are dedicated to helping them provide the highest standard of care to LEP patients,” said David Fetterolf, president of Stratus Video. “When patients are able to converse in their native language, it greatly improves their quality of care.”

Over the past several months we have known this change was coming. It has been an item of discussion for nearly a year now, but I still talk to people often that have not heard about it. Starting on January 1 of 2017 there will be some significant changes when it comes to feeding medicated feeds. This will include such things as milk replacer, mineral with CTC, and several others. The following appeared in the Beef Blog last week and it explains some of the things you need to know as we move toward the end of the year. Dr. Russ Daly is a DVM from South Dakota State University. I believe this is spelled out very well below by Dr. Daly, but in a nutshell if you have livestock and do not have a veterinarian, you need to change that ASAP. Unfortunately the number of large animal veterinarians in the US seems to be on the decline, however here in Southern Ohio that is not the case. There are several veterinarians that cover the 3 counties, but that does not mean you can wait until Christmas to get this taken care of. There are lots of livestock operations in the 3 counties as well, and even with a good number of veterinarians, this will take lots of time, so don’t wait to make contact. Veterinary client patient relationships (VCPR) defined A relationship with a veterinarian can take many forms, but the VCPR -necessary to obtain the proper VFD forms (as well as to use prescription medicines, or injectable or water medications in an extra-label fashion) -- is spelled out in state and federal regulations, and the federal VCPR by definition states that a valid VCPR exists when: • A veterinarian has assumed the responsibility for making medical judgments regarding the health of (an) animal(s) and the need for medical treatment, and the client (the owner of the animal or animals or other caretaker) has agreed to follow the instructions of the veterinarian;
DAVID DUGAN OSU EXTENSION AND EDUCATOR
• There is sufficient knowledge of the animal(s) by the veterinarian to initiate at least a general or preliminary diagnosis of the medical condition of the animal(s); and • The practicing veterinarian is readily available for follow-up in case of adverse reactions or failure of the regimen of therapy. Furthermore, the statute states, “Such a relationship can exist only when the veterinarian has recently seen and is personally acquainted with the keeping and care of the animal(s) by virtue of examination of the animal(s), and/or by medically appropriate and timely visits to the premises where the animal(s) are kept.” It’s that last part that creates uncertainty, since it doesn’t specify how frequently a veterinarian must visit an operation. One could say these requirements were written in a purposefully vague manner: since the rules must apply to all food animal operations, a one-size-fitsall approach is not easily attained. One key is how often conditions, animals, and management can change on an animal operation. A cow-calf operation may have used the same type of cattle and management strategies for the past 20 or 30 years, while in a large dairy, disease processes, nutrition, and management may change on a monthly or weekly basis. Veterinary feed directive (VFD) considerations While one could focus on the uncertainties present in the VCPR definition, some aspects are certain: • VFD forms can’t be obtained from a veterinarian that has never seen your animals or operation. • If a veterinarian is familiar with you, your animals, and your management, a farm visit to personally examine the set of animals to be treated
may not always be necessary before obtaining a VFD. • Your veterinarian is entitled to determine what “medically appropriate and timely visits” means in the context of their practice and your operation. They have no obligation to provide you a VFD if they feel a VCPR does not exist – their signature on the line indicates that relationship is present. • A valid VCPR does not mean the veterinarian can authorize uses of feed grade medications that are not on the label (“extra label” use). As mentioned earlier, some producers will navigate these changes in feedgrade antibiotic use much better than others. Those producers are the ones with an existing solid relationship with one veterinarian or one veterinary clinic. For them, all the dust-up about VCPRs is largely irrelevant because that relationship is ingrained in their operation. The bottom line Producers who have not had veterinarians visit their operation, or have not used veterinarians at all, will have a harder time adjusting to the VCPR requirement when it comes to obtaining VFD forms. It is not too late to start greasing those skids, though. Schedule a visit with a veterinarian to go over your current uses of feed grade medications and determine whether you will need to obtain VFDs for them. Then discuss what constitutes a VCPR in terms of your operation and the veterinary practice. Coordinating this information with your consulting nutritionist is a good idea. In this manner, you’ll be ready for the changes that will occur on January 1, 2017. Conscientious livestock producers will look at the VCPR requirement not as an opportunity to seek loopholes in the system, rather they will consider it an opportunity for animal health and profitability improvement through veterinary involvement in their animal’s well-being.
