Entomologist, Mary Gardiner, is recruiting farmers and gardeners to help see how native species of lady beetles are standing up to the invasion of exotic lady beetles. “Many types of native lady beetles are declining in Ohio, while the introductions of exotic non-native species of lady beetles are increasing,” says Gardiner, with OSU’s College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. “Lady beetles are a beneficial insect for gardeners and farmers because they provide natural pest control.” Lady beetles, also known as ladybugs or lady bird beetles, consume aphids, scale insects and many other pests that injure plants in gardens, landscapes and agricultural settings. The Agricultural Landscape Ecology Lab is hosting three sessions of a

workshop this year in May to kick off The Buckeye Lady Beetle Blitz 2014. This workshop will focus on the ‘secret lives’ of beneficial garden arthropods. You will learn about the diversity of predators, parasitoids, and pollinators that inhabit your garden. Many of the presentations feature excerpts from the new book, “Good Garden Bugs” written by Dr. Mary Gardiner due out in 2015. Participants can also get involved with two exciting
research projects, the Buckeye Lady Beetle Blitz, and a new study examining pollination services in home gardens. As part of the afternoon session, they will include an update on what they have learned from the BLBB surveys to date, a review of lady beetle identification and sampling procedures, and distribution of 2014 toolkits. Of the threes sessions offered, the closest to our region will be on May 16th at the Garden Civic Center,
