Legal Notice DEADLINE Thursday 10:00 A.M.

DENNIS BROUGHTON ket with wine, glasses, and honey as a door prize which was very nice. We want to thank Vern and Joy Creighton and their family at Indian Springs Winery. If you know any changes that need to be in the fair book please contact us. We have 2 new fair board members to get their mug shots in the book. Both Senior and Junior fair boards need to look for changes in rules, dates, or new classes for the Little State Fair. May 1st is the last day for entries on the fair book cover contest. There will be two Fifty Dollar prizes in Junior and Senior divisions. Go to our website: www.littlestatefair. com for all the rules. I would like to thank

everyone who has made comments about the articles on the Brown Co. Fair. Keeping you up to date has been fun. Memories for Everyone at the Brown Co. Fair: is the theme for the 163rd Brown Co. Fair. My memory for writing each month is Al Rhonemus. Al and Patty wrote a book called The Big Story of the Little State Fair. Al was my 4-H agent in 1960 or 1961. He was the past president of the Brown Co. Fair and past president of the Ohio Fair Managers Association. He has been my inspiration for writing. Al loved God, his family, Brown Co. Fair, and Fizzleville his home. At our April meeting we had some topic's to discuss about the fair in Sept. One priority is changing the parking lot exit points. Anyone who was at the fair knows we had problems leaving the fair at night. This subject will be refined and hopefully corrected by the fair. David Frye gave a report on the new elec-

tronic sign at the front entrance and it was voted that we would not sell advertising on the sign. Events in Brown Co. during the year will be displayed and will be a reminder for you. Bill Neal gave an update on the hog dept. for the fair. All hog project people should be aware of the changes before September. Bob Hardyman has the 2014 entertainment schedule completed and will have it on our website: www.littlestatefair.com soon. The Kentucky Headhunters is the featured act on Tuesday night and if you would like more information about them their website is: www.kentuckyheadhunters.com. One of the new acts for Saturday at 1:30 p.m. is radio personality Rosie Young from C103. Country music fans of Patsy Cline remember Saturday September 27th at the Danny Gray Activities center. Later that evening the finals for the Talent Show will be held. Get your entries in early

and be ready for Thursday at the preliminaries. All plans for the Brown County Summer Nationals Tractor Pull are rolling. June 28, 2014 at 7 p.m. four classes of N.T.P.A. sponsored Tractor Pull at the Brown Co. Fair Grounds. There is no where you can spend $15.00 for this type of entertainment and right here in Brown County. We wish to thank 2 of our sponsors the Georgetown SuperStore and Case IH. We are still looking for sponsors and this would be a good investment for you. If you have any questions about the fair, look on our website at www.littlestatefair.com. Like us on Facebook at littlestatefair. Our E-Mail address is: brcofair@hotmail.com. Telephone number: (937) 378-3558 and fax number is: (937) 378-1361. The 163nd Brown Co. Fair will be held on September 22rd - 27th. Your memories start when we see you at the fair.

GAP training still needed by many people Changes in County Fair Swine Procedures All three counties will have some changes in the procedures for the 2014 hog projects. Some will be more than others due to the fact that they have not been exactly the same in the past. With this Saturday being the date that WAS scheduled for tag-in Adams County, I want to make sure everyone is aware of the issue. Please check with the county you show in for details, but the following addresses the situation at this time for Adams County. There will be no tag-in this Saturday in Adams Co. You need to obtain tags from the OSU Extension office so you can tag your own pigs. Other information and details are available through the OSU Extension Office. The reason for the change from a centralized tagging and weigh-in to an identification form completed by the exhibitor at home is the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus (PEDv). This is a viral disease that’s working its way through the United State. PEDv typically results in acute outbreaks of severe diarrhea, vomiting and variable mortality (up to 100%) in young pigs. PEDv is a major concern for hog producers, both here in Adams County and across the country. GAP Training for Tobacco Growers The number of calls since our last GAP training has been alarming. Several people who are just now finding

DAVID DUGAN OSU EXTENSION SERVING ADAMS, BROWN AND HIGHLAND CO. out that they need GAP this year. The number of calls per day has declined in the past week, but there are still growers out there that do not realize they need this. GAP stands for Good Agricultural Practices and is required by ALL TOBACCO companies for 2014. If you plan to produce and sell tobacco in 2014, and have not been through GAP training in the past couple of months you probably need it. Go to http://gapconnections.com to begin the process. We had four sessions in March in Adams and Brown Counties and in Gallia County this Monday. There are no plans to do any training sessions after this one, so please spread the word to those who may need training. You need to call Pam at the Adams Co. Extension Office (937) 544-2339 to register for the upcoming GAP training. The date will be Tuesday, April 22 at 7:00 p.m. Pesticide License Testing For several years we offered one or maybe two days for people to take the tests that is required for private and commercial applicators who apply pesticides. In recent years, we have increased the number of possible dates for taking the

tests. Last year I scheduled 5 dates and ended up adding another. So far this year we have had 2 dates with all seats filled and the upcoming date for April is already full. In order to take the test you need to register in one of two methods. You can register online at http://pested.osu.edu or you can register by phone with the Ohio Department of Agriculture at (800) 2821955. The test is offered at several locations throughout Ohio, but the local site is the Old Y Restaurant located on US 62 between Hillsboro and SR 32 and can be found online as the Highland Co. site. We have decided to offer the tests throughout the year with the number of people wanting to take the tests. We plan to offer the test at the Old Y on the second Monday of most months. I say most months because there we be a few months that we will not offer the tests. We do still have seats available for the May date. Local Wineries Wine grapes continue to be a crop that is growing interest from several producers throughout the area. With a number of wineries in the area, the availability of locally grown and produced is an option that many consumers can now take advantage of for wine. A couple of the local wineries recently shared some of their success stories and their upcoming summer schedules. The following is

Vitamin K helps with blood clotting Vitamin K is not a vitamin most people are familiar with unless you are taking warfarin (brand name Coumadin). Warfarin is a blood thinner, a form of it is actually used in rat poison. When a rat eats the rat poison it eventually causes the rat to hemorrhage and bleed to death. It does this by blocking vitamin K. Vitamin K was discovered by a Danish scientist Henrik Dam. Dam was actually investigating the role of cholesterol. He did this by feeding chickens a special diet with all cholesterol removed. After several weeks the chickens started hemorrhaging or bleeding to death. Dam tried adding pure cholesterol to the feed to no avail. This led to the assumption that some other substance was removed when the cholesterol was removed from the feed. He called this other mystery substance a coagulation vitamin. Since coagulation is spelled with a “K” in German, we ended up with vitamin K. One form of vitamin K is found in plants. This form is known as vitamin K-1. In plants, vitamin K-1 is involved in photosynthesis. This means that dark green leafy vegetables are high in vitamin K, so iceberg lettuce is low in vitamin K, whereas kale is high in. Our bodies cannot actually use vitamin K-1, we have to convert it to vitamin K-2. This conversion takes place in the testes, pancreas and the walls of the arteries. Vitamin K-1 can also be converted to K2 by the bacteria in our gut. Vitamin K is another of the fat soluble vitamins (like vitamin A and D in earlier columns), which means the

HEALTH MATTERS TOM CALLAHAN, RPH body is able to store extra vitamin K. Its deficiency is rare in healthy adults, but is sometimes seen after abdominal surgery, in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease or patients with cystic fibrosis. One group that is known to be vitamin K deficient is newborns. Between two to ten per 100,000 newborns start bleeding because of a vitamin K deficiency. Because of this, in the US, newborns are routinely given a shot of vitamin K. As you probably already know from the stories about the rats and the chickens, vitamin K is important for blood clotting. Vitamin K is also important is building bone. Because of this people taking warfarin (especially men for some reason) are at a higher risk for osteoporosis. Some studies have suggested that taking a low dose vitamin K supplement while on warfarin can help prevent osteoporosis. It can also help stabilize those with fluctuating bleeding times. This is still a controversial practice, if you are taking warfarin do not try this without first discussing it with your physician. Tom Callahan is a pharmacist, he lives in the Milford area. Watching Channel 12 weather on April 1st, everyone was wishing Tim Hendricks a Happy Birthday. My thoughts were, that was a perfect birthday for a weatherman. He has fooled us more this year than any I can remember. April 2 my wife called me a nut case because I mowed our backyard before it rained. Did it need it, probably not, but it looks nice right now. On March 30th some of the director's, including my wife and I went to Washington Court House. They were having a district meeting for the Ohio Fair Managers Association. This is the last meeting before the Fair season starts. We heard about some new rules pertaining to rides and the inspections before the fair begins. One gentleman explained again about the rules for petting zoos and the requirement for hand washing stations at all barns where animals are housed for the fair. Indian Springs Winery sent a bas-
