Information sought in shooting Little Aubree Stykes is improving daily in Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati as her family members continue to try to deal with the murder of her mother. 22 year old Brittany Stykes was found shot to death in a wooded area off of Highway 68 between State Route 125 and Laycock Road. She was slumped over in the drivers seat of a yellow Jeep. Aubree was in the Jeep with her, suffering a bullet wound to the head. Brittany was seventeen weeks pregnant. Investigators with the Brown County Sheriff’s Office have not released a leading theory on the circumstances of the shooting. At a press conference on Sept. 5, Chief Deputy John Schadle briefed the media on the status of the investigation. “We’re still waiting on a lot of things to come back from the crime lab, evidence to be processed, things of that nature. I’ve got three detectives that are actively following any lead or phone call that comes in.”, Schadle said. He said that his detectives are pursuing some possibilities. “We’ve gotten some (leads), but a lot of them have turned out to be bogus information.”, he said. Schadle then pointed out that he has seen some information from Cincinnati media sources that has not been accurate. “I’ve read various news accounts that have actually had contradictory information from whatever sources

that you folks talk to. I don’t think that’s going to help this investigation at all. I would caution you to check out your sources of information, because you may be getting erroneous or ficticious information. Anything that we release is based on fact, not assumption or speculation. I can’t say that for everybody else that you might be dealing with.” Following the press conference, various Cincinnati media outlets reported that the sheriff’s office “has no leads”, despite being told that detectives were pursuing them. Schadle said that while the investigation process may seem to be slow from the outside, it is progressing. “We’re trying to eliminate persons of interest, we’re trying to evaluate evidence. Some of our evidence has not been completely tested, so we are still somewhat in the dark about what we may or may not learn.”, Schadle said. He added that the time frame of the crime had been reduced to 35 minutes. “We have the victim on video driving at 7:30 pm. so we know this happened between 7:30 and when the call came in at 8:05 pm when the vehicle was spotted in the wooded area.”, Schadle said. He then appealed to anyone who was in the area at that time to rethink about what they saw. “Just because someone didn’t see the shooting, doesn’t mean they don’t have pertinent information. There may be someone who was driving on the road and CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

Rep. Brad Wenstrup asks constituents for their opinion on military action against Syria BY Martha B. Jacob The Brown County Press On September 4, U.S. Congressman Brad Wenstrup posted on his website, www.wenstrup.house.gov, that he was glad that President Obama had decided to consult with Congress before taking any action on Syria. “The president has an obligation to the American people to lay out the case for a strike in Syria prior to taking military action,” Wenstrup said on the site. “With any military mission, we have to ask ourselves what we want to accomplish and how we are planning to achieve our stated goal.” On the website Wenstrup

also asked his constituents for their opinions on taking a stand against Syria. “In the coming days, I will be evaluating all the facts and potential impacts surrounding the use of our military in Syria,” he stated. “Sending our military into action is one of the most important actions I can take as your representative and I take that duty seriously.” Even before it was confirmed that the deadly nerve agent Sarin was used on the Syrian people, killing over 1,400 men women and children, Wenstrup weighed in on the issue during a meeting August 27 with members of the Ripley Village Council. Wenstrup, U.S. Congress-

man of District 2 in Ohio, covers Brown, Adams, Highland, Clermont and Pike counties and part of Scioto, Ross and Hamilton Counties. For the past several weeks he has been traveling his district listening to his constituents vent their concerns. During the Ripley Council meeting, Wenstrup expressed his concerns for American security if the U.S. becomes involved in the Syrian situation. His comments were made before it was confirmed that Sarin gas was indeed used. “Needless to say, the things that are taking place as far as the intelligence reports, CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

As regional winners, every student artist received a certificate from the National Weather Service and sling backpacks full of prizes from the offices and their partners that make up the Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness. “Caroline’s poster fea-

St. Michael School, as well as surrounding area schools routinely practice safety precautions to ensure that the students are prepared for emergency situations. We are all very proud of Caroline, she did a wonder

job on her poster.” The efforts of the students who participate in the poster contest have helped the committee meet its overall goal, to educate Ohioans about the actions they can take to protect themselves and others before, during and after severe weather occurs. Drug arrest made in Georgetown On September 3, 2013 officers from the Georgetown Police Department executed a Narcotics related Search Warrant on a Georgetown residence. Prior to the execution of the warrant Georgetown Officers Robert Gifford and Matt Staggs had used an informant developed by Officer Staggs to purchase Prescription Pills from an individual on Kenwood Avenue. The officers were able to obtain enough information to obtain a Search Warrant. Sgt. Gifford met with Assistant Prosecutor Chris VanHarlingen and the warrant was

drafted. Gifford then met with Juvenile/Probate Judge Margaret Clark. Judge Clark reviewed the warrant and issued it on September 2nd. In the afternoon hours of September 3rd. Georgetown officers set up surveillance of the suspect’s residence and upon his arrival the Warrant was served. The suspect, Charles W. Faul, 45 years of age, residing at 403 Kenwood Ave. Apt. #3 was arrested and transported to the Brown County Adult Detention Center. Three other adults were detained and subsequently released.

Chief Forrest Buddy Coburn stated, we knew there were small children in the residence on occasion, so we waited until we were reasonably sure they were gone before we executed the Warrant. Faul was charged with one count of Trafficking in Prescription Pills and one count of Trafficking in Heroin, both counts being Felonies of the Third Degree. He is also being held on a probation violation through Common Pleas Court. His bond was set at $70,000.00 on his arrest. Charges are pending against at least two other

subjects pending the completion of the investigation. As with all other municipalities the trafficking of prescription pills and heroin are major problems for law enforcement and the citizens who are subject to the aftermath of the crime they spawn. The Georgetown Police Department remains dedicated to fighting this and all other crime. If you have any information or suspect illegal acts, please contact the Georgetown Police Department at (937) 378-6400 or contact your local law enforcement authorities.

TOM GLASSCOCK Gabbard's Mt Orab Ford's Tom Glasscock is a FORD CERTIFIED PARTS CONSULTANT, and very good at it. In the 1980's Ralph Gabbard met a new friend while drag racing, Tom Glasscock. Ralph realized Tom was a very good mechanic and knew very much about vehicles, whether they were race cars or normal vehicles. One day while racing, they had a talk. The next thing you know we had a new technician, Tom started on July 10th in 1984. It didn't hurt to have a technician who could also work on Ralph's race cars. Then suddenly we needed a Parts Counterperson, we didn't have to look very far. We moved Tom over to parts and never looked back. Tom and his wife Julia are avid runners. Tom also coaches cross country and track at Eastern Brown High School. If you see somebody actually running through the building to help a customer, that will be Tom. We couldn't count how many customers have called back to tell us how helpful Tom has been. We salute and thank you Tom.

Brad Wenstrup: concerns exist surrounding possible Syria strikes Representative Brad Wenstrup welcomed President Obama’s decision to consult Congress before committing U.S. military assets in Syria. An Iraq war veteran, Wenstrup says he is carefully weighing possible action by the U.S. military and potential outcomes. “I am glad the President has decided to consult with Congress on the use of military force in Syria. Before possibly committing the U.S. military to action in Syria, we must ensure that our military objectives are clearly outlined and attain-

I look forward to further evaluating the situation in order to make an informed vote next week.” Congress is expected to vote on a resolution regarding Syria the week of September 9th. Representative Wenstrup is a member of the House Armed Services and the Veterans Affairs Committees. He is currently a Lt. Working to achieve Dr. King’s dream On August 28, 1963, an Ohio River Valley native stood on the marble steps of the Lincoln Memorial with Jewish, Catholic, and Protestant leaders of many ethnicities, races, and ages. They gathered to share their stories – and to call on our country to live up to its ideals. Fifty-years ago, a young, red-haired auto-worker and labor organizer stood alongside Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., my good friend Rep. John Lewis, and others to address the crowd gathered at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Walter P. many Americans in 1963. Fifty-years later, Americans still fight for equality. Beyond commemorative events, including the Bloody Sunday March in Alabama I joined in 1998, we can remember our shared history while also working to address contemporary economic and social justice issues, including efforts to raise the minimum wage and stop threats against voting rights. The labor and civil rights movements have been pivotal in ensuring all workers receive fair pay – and the resources needed to do their jobs well. With too many Americans working harder than ever and barely getting by, it’s past time to raise the minimum wage. Recently, I visited four businesses throughout Ohio that support increasing the federal minimum wage. These businesses and their owners know that treating employees fairly isn’t just good for them; it’s also good for business. That’s why I’m fighting to pass the Fair Minimum Wage Act, which would raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour and then provide for automatic annual increases linked to changes in the cost of living. The bill would also gradually raise the minimum wage for tipped workers for the first time in 20 years. The tipped minimum wage currently stands at just $2.13 an hour. This bill would increase it to 70 percent of the regular minimum wage. Americans eager to join or re-join the workforce should also have access to

good-paying jobs that are the foundation of our middle class. And, of course, every American should have a voice in our democracy. My mother, a native of Mansfield, Georgia who moved to my father’s hometown of Mansfield, Ohio was insistent that every human being be treated with dignity – and that no one is too busy or too important to serve. In her 80s, she led voter registration drives on a card table outside the local grocery store and helped elect the first African American mayor of Mansfield. I often think of her when we hear of new plots to limit access to the polls. We should continue to encourage seniors, students, and all Americans to vote. However, restrictive voting requirements would have the opposite effect. That’s why I will continue to oppose efforts to curtail access to voting booths – especially in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to eliminate Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act. As we celebrate one of the most famous acts of democracy in our nation’s history, let’s also keep an eye on the future. History remembers the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom as the backdrop for Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” Address. The march – and the movement it nurtured – are so much more than a scene our many-chaptered American story; it’s a starting point for what we can achieve when we work together.

This Labor Day weekend, troopers were cracking down on drug activity and aggressive drivers. Troopers made 263 drug arrests – more than a 32 percent increase – throughout the holiday reporting period of Midnight on Friday, August 30 through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, September 2. In addition, aggressive driving citations were up more than 67 percent with 3,727 drivers cited and OVI arrests were up nine percent with 762 drivers arrested. Labor Day weekend is historically known for being a dangerous time on Ohio roadways, and this year was no different. Despite the death of 13 people, who were killed in 11 crashes this year, Ohio experienced a decrease of a fatality when compared to 2012 when 14 people died in 14 crashes. Of those killed, three were attributed to an impaired driver and six were motorcyclists. “While one fatality is

LIEUTENANT RANDY MCELFRESH one too many, it is encouraging to see a reduction in deaths this holiday weekend,” said Colonel Paul A. Pride, superintendent of the Patrol. “Ohio’s troopers were out in full force this holiday weekend and their efforts undoubtedly saved lives.” The Patrol saw a significant increase in safety belt citations – with an increase of over 23 percent when compared to last year. Overall enforcement was up more than nine percent, with troopers stopping more than 29,000 vehicles in which a citation was issued. BY Martha B. Jacob The Brown County Press Saturday night, September 7, Spearpoint Band will take the stage at the Mt. Orab Music in the Park Concert series. Spearpoint is no stranger to the Mt. Orab event and entertained huge crowds during last years series. Spearpoint is a young rock band out of Cincinnati and age from 16 to 18 years old. They have performed all over Cincinnati area and according to Woody Whittington, coordinator of the concert series, he is very happy that the

band will be performing again this year. “This is a classic rock band,” Whittington said, “and they are a real crowd pleaser especially for our younger crowd.” The band will perform from 6:30 p.m. until 10 p.m. Then on the following Saturday, September 14 the concert series will close the season with a performance by Phoenix Rising, a classic rock band. Based in Cincinnati, Phoenix Rising is made of the group leader Dwayne Chandler, (lead vocalist), Bill Culbertson (lead guitarist and

September 14, the evening Phoenix Rising performs will prove to be an exciting event for another reason to. “Most people know that the Mt. Orab Music in the Park raised enough money to build an amphitheater,” Whittington said, “so we’ve planned a small ground breaking ceremony to kick off the project. “Anyone who would like

A handful of high school students founded and now operate a special group called “Rise Up.” The Christian group meets at the Georgetown Church of Christ. President of the group, Michele Schmidt, recently met with members of the Georgetown Village Council to request help and permission to organize a 5K Run/Walk event to be held on November 2. “Our purpose, as members of Rise Up is to spread God’s word and raise money for causes we believe God has put in our

hearts,” Schmidt explained. “This 5K Run/Walk (Colors of India) is just one way we’ve planned to raise money. The proceeds will go to the persecuted churches in India. Our foundation organization wasn’t that long ago, in fact we were just founded in late June on a mission trip.” Schmidt said she is among six founding members and this fundraiser is the first the group has planned. She said she hopes as more high school students hear about Rise Up they too will join. “We hope all goes well with this 5K Run/Walk so

that next year we can help another cause,” Schmidt said. The 5K Run/Walk Colors of India will begin and end at the Brown County Fairgrounds. Registration begins the week of September 16 and everyone is invited and encouraged to come out an

At last – a formula to rid your pet of skunk scent! You'd think that if you discovered the handsdown, bar-none best way for dealing with a pet who has been skunked, you'd be able to sell your formula for a tidy sum and be set for life, right? Wrong. At least, that's not the way it worked for chemist Paul Krebaum, who found just such a magic formula a few years ago -- and hasn't gained anything but the gratitude of pet lovers for his troubles. First the formula, then the story. Take 1 quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide (available from any drugstore), 1/4 cup of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate for you science types) and 1 teaspoon of liquid soap, such as Ivory. Mix and immediately apply to the stinky pet. Rinse thoroughly with tap water. The result is astonishing. Unfortunately, so will be the explosion if you made up the solution and then tried to bottle it! The merging of the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda creates lots of oxygen in a big hurry. This chemical reaction is key to how the solution works, but it's also fierce enough to explode in a closed container. Which is why Paul Krebaum hasn't capitalized on his discovery. There's just no way to sell something you can't put in a bottle. And it's a shame, too, because the man deserves some kind of reward. The stuff really works. Not like tomato juice, which dampens the odor a little and leaves you with a slightly lessstinky pink dog. Commercial preparations seem to fare a little better, but even with them it's the passing of time that seems to finally do the trick. But the hydrogen peroxide mix? Skunk be gone! The trick is the oxygen, which grabs the molecules that go into that horrid smell. Once snagged, the smell is neutralized. Simple chemistry, really. Since Krebaum pub-

lished his findings in a trade journal in 1993, his magic formula has spread far and wide, offered up by agriculture officials and hunting magazines, and touted by folks on the Internet. The Chicago Tribune gave him a good write-up in 1994 that got picked up by newspapers all over the country. In it, he called his mix a "freegift-to-humanity type deal." I first heard about this formula a couple of years ago and read reports from many who raved about it. I made up the solution to see what it was like, but never got lucky enough to try it on one of my dogs. They just don't seem all that interested in skunks when we're walking in the wooded area near our home. Finally, a friend called to tell me her setter had been skunked and to

enjoy the event. “We would really like to thank the Village of Georgetown for allowing us to hold this event,” she added. “Everyone on council has been very supportive and we appreciate Police Chief Buddy Coburn’s offer to help with traffic issues.”

Wenstrup asks constituents for photos from S. Ohio Congressman Brad Wenstrup is calling on constituents from across the 2nd district in southern and southwestern Ohio to sub-

ask my advice. At last! The chance to try out the mix. I must admit she didn't share my enthusiasm, at least not at first. She had already bathed the dog in soap and water. She had poured eight quarts of tomato juice over him. And still he smelled. So I told her about Paul Krebaum's miracle skunk cure. A couple of hours later, Krebaum had another believer. The dog slept on the bed that night. I suppose it's not very practical to suggest that everyone who's grateful to Paul Krebaum send him a few bits to make up for some of the money he'll never make on his miracle skunk cure. So maybe it would be nice if you save this article for when you'll need it, and when you do, say a few silent words of thanks to the man who'll get you out of one stinky fix. Chiropractic Care for Foot Pain Dr. Lydia Ogden

Dr. Lydia Ogden is a Chiropractic Physician and is the owner of Active Living Chiropractic located in Mt. Orab, OH.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis? Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the fascia on the bottom of the foot. Pain is commonly worse in the morning or after prolonged sitting. It is caused by repetitive faulty function of the foot placing excessive tension on the plantar fascia. There are two foot types that are predisposed to this problem: 1. Flat feet 2. Highly-arched feet They both place excessive tension on the foot’s structures; however they must be treated very differently. “Highly-arched” feet suffer because their tissues and joints are too tight to begin with. “Flat” feet suffer because the tissues and joints tend to be too “loose” and lack structural stability. Plantar fasciitis can be exacerbated by factors such as: • too much standing • poor shoes (see below) • repetitive stress • a change or increase in activities • being overweight • injury Bad shoes are those that... • have poor or no arch support • are worn out • do not bend at the ball of the foot • do not have any cushion and are worn on a hard surface Dr. Lydia Ogden’s treatment approach includes: 1. Chiropractic adjustments: Adjustments to help reduce heel/foot pain and restore normal ankle and foot biomechanics. 2. Active Release Technique: Active Release Technique (ART) is a very effective and conservative soft tissue treatment method. ART locates and treats scar tissue adhesions and breaks them up. This restores normal tissue tension, flexibility and improves circulation. Reducing scar tissue also makes the tissue stronger and more resilient to further trauma. 3. Therapeutic exercises: Specific rehabilitation exercises and assisted stretches are given to improve flexibility and ankle/foot stability. 4. Physiotherapy: To reduce heel/foot pain and inflammation 5. Diet and supplement suggestions: An anti-inflammatory diet with appropriate supplementation can help reduce plantar fasciitis. 6. Lifestyle modifications: Repetitive stress activities may need to be addressed to reduce foot and heel pain.

CONVERSION

In Acts chapter 9 we find a man who becomes a very significant person in the New Testament of the Bible. He was a Jew who was persecuting and killing Christians. In fact, the clothes of those who stoned Stephen was laid down at his feet (Acts 7:58). Look with me in Acts 9 beginning in verse 1: “And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.” Before Christians were called Christians they were called people of the way. These letters he desired were equivalent of a warrant for the arrest of any man or woman who professed Jesus Christ. Saul of Tarsus, known to us as the Apostle Paul (Acts 13:9), was educated in all the wisdom and learning of the Scriptures under the instruction of Gamaliel (Acts 22:3) (Acts 5:34). Therefore, he literally believed the Scriptures. However, he would not believe that Jesus was the Messiah. Consequently, he felt that the people of the way were committing heresy. He took it upon himself to stamp out what we know as Christianity. There is a lot of background history which brought his way of thinking about; so keep in mind, as we take a look at Saul, that his upbringing influenced his actions. It explains how he would have felt about any religion that claimed that the Messiah had already come and had been crucified. Of courses, we know that Jesus Christ is the Christ, the Son of God, and that He will one day be recognized by the Jews as the Messiah they have been looking for. He will not be born on the 9th Av July because He was already born in Bethlehem of Judah in the days of Herod the king. It has now been these 2 days (Hosea 6:2), these 2000 years (II Peter 3:8), and one of these days He is coming back with a shout (II Thessalonians 4:16) and we are going up. After the 7 year Tribulation period Jesus Christ is coming to set up His 1000 year reign on earth (Revelation 19:11-16) and Israel will be restored (Hosea 6:2) (Romans 11:26); He will be their King! But Saul, while on his way to Damascus, was still looking for

a coming Messiah and a time when Israel would reign supreme. Verses 3-4: “And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?” This was not ordinary sunlight; so what was it? In Genesis 1:3 God said: “...Let there be light...” It was not sunlight. The sun, moon, and stars were made on a later day. I believe this light was the same light known as Shekinah Glory which led the children of Israel, the light which lit up the Holy of Holies, the light of the world, the light of God (Revelation 21:23) which has no need of the sun. I believe it was this light which shone down on Saul. This light was so bright that he lost his sight for 3 days (verse 9). After falling to the ground he heard a voice calling his name twice, asking a question, and then giving instructions on what he must do. It was at this time that Saul was born again. He received the Holy Ghost in verse 17 and then was baptized in verse 18. In verse 15 the Lord spoke to a man named Ananias concerning Saul: “...Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:” First he was to bear the name of Jesus to the Gentiles, second to the kings, and last of all to the children of Israel. It was from the great Apostle Paul that we got the basic doctrine for the Christian church. The church is mainly made up of Gentiles. The Lord knew it would be and that the church would be the testimony of God for the next 2000 years. Paul did go to the kings and to the Jews, but the Gentiles were to be his main focus. Now it is our job to spread the name of Jesus to the uttermost parts of the earth!

September at the Chamber It’s the beginning of September and that can only mean that the Brown County Fair is just around the corner. This year like recent years, the Chamber will have a booth at the fair and we invite everyone to stop by. The fair is the largest event in our county and not every business can get a booth and not every business has the manpower to staff a booth and the home front for a week. We solve those issues by encouraging all our members to bring their material to the Chamber office to be distributed during the fair. The Chamber’s booth is a place for member businesses to meet the public and interact with fairgoers. We have only a handful of spots left. Call the Chamber at 937-378-4784 to take advantage of this Chamber benefit. The new Affordable Care Act requires group health insurance to cover pediatric dental services. With all of the talk about the changes to medical insurance, this dental requirement has been under the radar. Our Chamber dental provider, Superior Dental, is rolling out a special pediatric dental plan for Chamber members to be in compliance with the new law. Keep an eye on this news and the Chamber’s weekly enewsletter for details when this plan is released. There are many benefits of Chamber membership including a listing online at www.buylocalbrown.com There is also a tab there for organizations to list their events. This is underutilized, but with the advent of more and more digital devices, it could be an effective way to reach more potential customers. We would hope that some of the businesses and organizations that are almost solely devoted to the tourism industry would take advantage of this. Call the Chamber and we’ll get you started. The Chamber’s Leadership development program, Brown County LEADS, will begin the 2013-14 class on October 11, and will meet one day a month through April. This is a great opportunity to learn the inner workings of the county we call home. It has been well received in the past and has already had an amazing impact on the region. It provides a unique networking opportunity that could be effective for years. Tuition is still only $400 and includes transportation and lunch each day. Mark your calendars for the Annual Reverse Raffle, Saturday November 2 at St. George Hall, Georgetown. This is a joint venture between the Chamber and the US Grant Association. The committee has been meeting to make this year’s event more exciting and more fun. Times and format are changing to make the evening move more quickly. Tickets will be available before the fair. We welcome our newest members, and thank our renewing members Southern Hills CTC, FWB Construction, Patrick Hornschemeier, Thomas Grennan, Doug Grenier Trucking, Southern State Community College, Ripley Federal Savings Bank, Purdy & Ring, & Davita Dialysis. Our next meeting is Thursday September 19 at Southern Hills Career and Technical Center, Georgetown.

This would be a perfect time of year to come out and visit Aunt Jemima’s gravesite and then on to the museum. The historic book containing the press releases from that time period has been restored and there is a possibility of pictures relating to those wonderful years being printed out, thanks to modern technology. Though the Aunt Jemima Breakfast's are now only a memory, the care, the upkeep of the cemetery continues. Any donations and/or inquires for purchasing a cemetery lot should be directed to Don Salisbury, (513) 2184661. *** Also, I would like to thank Ripley, Ohio and the person/s responsible for displaying the American Flag and the POW/MIA black flag. Kay and Randy has had an antique shop in the Old Piano Factory for 28 years. I did not have a clue about this fact. They are there every Monday ready to share stories about their findings and listen to others stories. Maybe sitting up a long running video camera would be a good thing to do to preserve these interesting stories. *** Wow, two places in one town, (at least two) that interesting stories are told; in separate directions. Rep. Brad Wenstrup asks constituents for their opinion on military action against Syria CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 we may get called back into congressional review,” Wenstrup said. “Syria is denying that they are the ones that launched the nerve agent. A lot of refugees are going into Jordan which is friendly to the United States. I am all for humanitarian aide and Jordan is taking on a tremendous load from Syria of people fleeing that country.” He continued, “We want to look at what we know, I would have to believe that this is the case. I don’t think that secretary Kary or the president want to just come out and say that because it’s not just us that has this intelligence.” Wenstrup added that with any militia mission, Americans should ask, ‘What do we hope to achieve and how does this effect us and how does military actions against Syria defend the United States.

“That’s our primary responsibility here,” Wenstrup continued, “to defend the United States of America whether it’s directly or indirectly. There can be reasons to go some place that ultimately protects American citizens. So what do we want the outcome to be.” He added, “We need to work backwards when it comes to a military mission and the only time really, in my adult life, that I can remember where we did this very well was the Gulf War, which was over in a week.” Wenstrup said The Gulf War mission was to drive the Iraqs out of Kuwait, pus the back to Bagdad and then come to some kind of an agreement. “We built up for that mission and we were ready for it,” he said, “General Colin Powell had everything he had asked for and he got it done, just like that. So when we look at Syria,

what do we hope to accomplish? Because we have a situation there where we say okay, President Bashar as-Assad faces their enemy and we don’t get along with them and Al Qaeda sure is our enemy and they’ve proven that they’re part of the Rebel Force, so in most situations you might say that the enemy of my enemy is my friend. But in this case, what if the enemy of your enemy is a worse enemy? And that’s exactly what we have to deal with. So what do we want the outcome to be?” Wenstrup said that America needs to determine that their minds are made up on that, before it dictates how it can end a mission. “If we want to just take out any nuclear, biological or chemical weapons,” he said, “then we better know where they are to take them out, right? And hopefully that can be done without

harming innocent people, that’s what we want to stop.” “That was the ‘red line’ the president said he had. So, we’re in a situation right now where as a country, our leader has said, you go beyond that, watch out. Wenstrup went on to say that he has a real concern of what’s in the bet interest of the American people and our America’s security and for any potential fallout, especially for Turkey, Israel and Jordan. “These are people who are friends to the United States, he said, “We want to make sure we don’t do something that puts them in greater harms way and ruins that relationship that we have with them and makes it more difficult to those nations. It’s not only the United State and what’s on the lin for the United States, but what’s on the line for our allies. The stakes are very high.”

the past 23 years. It was for the construction of the high school, but not to maintain the school. That levy has now expired.” Superintendent Naylor added that none of the money generated by this new 2.6 mill levy could be used for anything in the district except busses, technology, textbooks and facility upgrades. The mission of the Citizens for RULH Students is to find ways of informing the public about the upcoming levy. Among some of the ideas and issues discussed were: • hiring an outside agent with extensive experience, to run a campaign to get the levy passed; • placing signs in the yards in the district promoting the levy; • placing flyers in local businesses with information on the levy; • make it clear to voters

Information sought in shooting CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 a car accelerated past them at a high rate of speed and they just assumed it was someone speeding. It actually could have been the perpetrator getting out of the area.”, Schadle said. Schadle said that several items of evidence were found at the crime scene, and that those items are being processed. He also said that the Ohio Highway Patrol was working to reconstruct the scene on a computer. Schadle said that three detectives from the Brown County Sheriff’s Office were working the case, along with two crime scene investigators from Ohio BCI and a crime scene investigator for the BCSO. He also thanked the Ohio Highway Patrol, Georgetown Police Department, Ripley and Russellville EMS and Fire Departments, the Ohio Department of Transportation and Ohio BCI for their assistance. He is asking anyone with information to call the Sheriff’s office. The phone number to call at the Sheriff’s Office is 937-378-4435, ext. 114. Crime Stoppers is also offering a $5000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the killer. That number is 513-3523040. “Any lead, any bit of information anyone has we would appreciate. We will do the followup and see where it leads us.”, Schadle said. While the Sheriff’s Office is concentrating on

catching the killer, Brittany’s family is focusing on healing. Aubree’s father, Shane Stykes and her family have been at her bedside since the shooting. David Dodson, Brittany’s father and Aubree’s grandfather, said there is hope. “Aubree is improving daily, but she has a long ways to go.”, he said. “It’s very much an emotional roller coaster. Seeing my little granddaughter here improve a little more each day has been very comforting to me.” He said nobody should have to experience what he and his family are going through. “I would never wish this on anyone who would have to bury their daughter under the circumstances that I have. Brittany was the most loving person that you could ever know. She was an excellent mother. She was like a best friend to me. She came to see me and her mother every day and we had dinner together nearly every night. The family ties were very very close. This is just devastating to me not to be able to see her every day.” He then paused and said “Tomorrow, I have to bury my daughter and her unborn child.” Dodson also asked for help from the public in catching the killer of his daughter and grandchild. “Any tips or leads would be greatly appreciated at the Sheriff’s Department”, Dodson said. He added that he and

his family are grateful for the way the community has reached out to them in their time of need. “I am so thankful. The amount of support and love shown to my family has just been unreal. I appreciate every person that’s reached out to us”, Dodson said. Bob Wickline of the Saltair Church of Christ in Bethel has known the Dodson family for nearly thirty years. “I married Brittany’s parents, I baptized Brittany and I married Brittany and her husband. When I heard what happened, I reacted like it was a member of my own family. It felt like someone we all loved had been snatched from us in a most unthinkable and tragic way.”, Dodson said. “She had been at her mother-in-law’s most of the day working on a job resume and was simply returning home that evening when it happened.” He also reflected how the tragedy will be especially difficult for David Dodson to deal with in the years ahead. “The day she died was her father’s birthday. It was another insult to a man and a family that didn’t deserve it.” He said he is also taking comfort as Aubree’s condition improves. “She recognizes people, she’s able to talk, she’s doing everything we would hope she would do after surgery like she had.” Wickline said that Aubree is out of intensive care and will be closely

monitored over the next couple of weeks as she recovers. “It’s a miracle it didn’t kill her”, Wickline said. “The bullet went right through the center of her forehead and out the top of her head.” Wickline also said that the family is in need of financial as well as emotional support. “The family had no in-

surance and has no extra money at all. If anyone wishes to contribute to Brittany’s family and wants to do it through our church, we’ll be glad to help.” Here are the accounts currently set up to accept donations: • PNC Bank: Checks should be made payable to Eric Binder Attn: Brittany/ Aubree Care

• Fifth Third (5/3) Bank: Brittany Dodson Fund. Dodson said this account is associated with Ripley High School. • National Bank & Trust: Under-Amanda Schutte for the benefit of the Stykes Family Fund • Donations can also be made online at : http://www.gofundme.co m/452ilw.

Strong start for Brown County football teams

BY Brandon Barb The Brown County Press Both Western Brown and Fayetteville-Perry started off their football seasons in a good way by winning their first games on Aug. 30. The Broncos beat the Hillsboro Indians 49-6 while the Rockets won over the Clermont Northeastern Rockets 2012. “It was our first road game and the focus we had was key. The energy we had was great,” Western Brown Head Coach Evan Dreyer said. “We started fast, our defense brought great energy and I’m proud of them for holding them [Hillsboro] during the second half.”

The Broncos ran away with the game during the first half by scoring 28 points, while Hillsboro scored their only touchdown during the closing moments of the second quarter -- the extra point was blocked. “The offense clicked during the first quarter,” Dreyer said. “Our hard work and conditioning paid off, and a great start. We want to be the best conditioned team each night.” Dreyer said the young Bronco defense, that keeps improving, stepped up a great deal by allowing only six points being scored. Moving forward in the season, stopping the run is still the big goal for

Dreyer and his players. “Our older players know what it takes to play at a high level, and our goal is to play to our potential each week,” Dreyer said. Against Hillsboro, senior quarterback Devyn Wood was 20 for 27 with 472 yards and five touchdowns. Receivers Christian Dawson and Jarred Haggerty combined for 269 yards and three touchdowns. On defense, senior linebacker Derrick McIntosh had 11 tackles. While they didn’t put up as many points, the Fayetteville Rockets got the same result. “I’m pretty pleased with how things turned out,” Fayetteville Head

Coach Nathan Geers said. “The boys came out strong and accomplished what they wanted to get done.” Turnovers were the big key for the winning Rocket team, with them pulling in three interceptions and one fumble recovery. The offense also turned the ball over to Clermont Northeastern twice, but they were able to make up for it. “This win gives the team some confidence moving forward. It is the first time we have started 1-0 and we stay focused moving forward,” Geers said. “I’m proud of what the boys are doing.”

The Eastern and Fairfield High School teams both helped raise money for Farm Resue during their Dig for Farm Rescue game Aug. 30.

Farm Rescue fundraiser a success BY Brandon Barb The Brown County Press On Aug. 30 the Eastern High School volleyball teams held their Dig for Farm Rescue game to raise money for Farm Rescue, a nonprofit that helps families with harvesting and planting when they are in need. The organization serves families in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and eastern Montana. They have assisted over 200 families since 2006. They supply the equipment and labor needed when a family is unable to plant their crops, or harvest them when the time comes. During the game against Fairfield High School, which Eastern won, a silent auction and

bake sale were held which did very well according to Eastern Head Coach Carmela Reeves. Fans of both schools also had the chance to Ace the Defenders, by paying to serve a ball to whichever team they wanted. On top of all of that, the Winchester Ag Services gave $10 per Eastern ace and the team had 12 of them. “It went really well, better than I expected,” Reeves said. “The silent auction and bake sale went very well.” Reeves got the idea to help Farm Rescue’s mission after her inlaws were able to work on their land, and received help from the organization. With a goal of $500 the event raised just over $800. The money raised will be sent to Farm Rescue, based in North

Dakota, within the week according to Reeves. Even though the event was a success Reeves doesn’t know if the team will help out Farm Rescue in the future because the players decide which charity project to undertake. They try to do a new project each year. Sponsors for the event were Winchester Ag Service, Giovanni’s Pizza, Five Points Implements, Tractor Supply, Equipment Super Store, True Points, Kerrington Farm Supply, Autozone, Rapunzel Hair Salon, O’Reilly Auto Parts, Mercier’s Inc., and Origami Owl. Eastern won the game 25-18, 25-11, 24-26, 2510.

WB participates in Jim Neu Invitational

Fayetteville-Perry junior Carly Burroughs (3) spiked the ball against Williamsburg on Aug. 28.

Undefeated streak broken for Fayetteville BY Brandon Barb The Brown County Press The Fayetteville-Perry volleyball team began the 2013 season by winning five straight games, giving them an undefeated 5-0. It wasn’t until the lady Rockets played North Adams on Sept. 3 when they suffered their first loss. The match went to a fifth game tie breaker, but Fayetteville was edged out by two points in the end. The final score was 25-17,

18-25, 25-23, 23-25, 1816. The team is very experienced with seven seniors and two juniors, so a loss won’t affect them much. And it hasn’t. On Sept. 4, when Fayetteville travelled to Felicity-Franklin, the lady Rockets went back to their winning ways. The girls beat the Cardinals in three games, 25-18, 25-16, 2523. Felicity fell to 0-4 and Fayetteville moved to 6-1.

Fan Appreciation Night was great!

As summer winds down Moler Raceway Park had one of its famous fan appreciation night that allows all the driver and cars to come out onto the frontstretch and have a meet n greet with the fans. One of the most look towards events of the season there was a nice crowd and car count on hand to participate. Also members of the Dayton Auto Race Fans were on hand for the evenings races and presented each feature winner with a commemorative Tshirt and 1 year membership. In the racing action things were fast and exciting as the late model division went 25 laps without a caution as Edinburgh, Indiana’s Chad Stapleton claimed his sixth feature win of the season as he outdueled Barry Doss, of Sardinia,Ohio on the opening laps and went on to claim the win on the wicked fast racing surface in his Barry Wright Chassis, Jay Dickens Race Engines, Schaeffer Oil sponsored machine. Doss would come home in second followed by James Rice, Chris Shannon, and Jason Whitaker. Doss and Stapleton claimed heat race victories. In the chevette division it was a night of cautions in their feature event. Miles Tarvin beat Boog Verdon on the first lap into turn #1 and despite a couple of minor challenges would never be beat in his Paul Brath Farms, Brown Co.Pork Producers, Lykins Oil, P&G Farms sponsored machine. Verdon would battle the whole race and come home second with Sean Jones, Rusty Yarger,

and Mike Clark completing the top 5 positions. In the UMP Modified division a nice field of cars were on hand and it was Dan Eberts of Spring Lake,Minnesota, Larry Pickelheimer Jr. of Bethel , Ohio and Jeremie Bretz of Maysville, Ky claiming the heat race wins and setting the field for the A-main event. At the start of the 20 feature event it was Eberts out front with Fireball Pinkerton up to second spot but the caution would quickly wave at end of lap #1. This would be a trend as numerous cautions for relatively minor incidents would slow the pace of the race throughout the 20 laps. At the checkers it was Eberts claiming his first ever win at MRP in his Impressive Racecar sponsored by Arctic Cat. Following Ebert across the line was Pickelheimer Jr in second spot with last week’s feature winner Matt Hamilton coming home in third position followed by John “Weasel” Rhoades and Dan Dehner. In the Crazy Compact it was another first time winner as Trevor Landrum of Florence Ky would park his Mesery Enterprises, Speed Decals,Valvoline sponsored machine in victory lane for the first time. At the start of the 15 lap feature event Landrum would take off from his outside pole starting position to the lead and would never look back as he led all 15 laps enroute to the win. Justin Dalton would come from 9th starting spot to finish second with Jason Borgenmenke, Colin Green, and Willie Butler rounding out the top five positions.

WB volleyball ‘coming together’ By Brandon Barb The Brown County Press The Western Brown volleyball lost their first game against Turpin High School but since then the lady Broncos have won six straight matches. “We’re really playing as a team, and our offense and defense are both really strong,” Western Brown Head Coach Carla Fite said. “We’re moving fast and working together.” Fite said the first game was lost due to errors made by the lady Broncos. “Turpin is a strong team, and it put things into perspective for us,” Fite said. Being on such a streak could make some players over confident but Fite’s

players are still grounded. “They take every thing game by game,” she said. “We are consistent in attacking the ball and not sending any free ones over. Everything is coming together for us.” Moving forward in the season matches against Amelia and Milford will be tough for the Broncos, according to Fite. Fite has been coaching volleyball at Western Brown for three years now, and this is the first time her girls have come together and played as a well rounded team. “I hope they can keep the momentum going for the rest of the season,” she said.
