THE BROWN COUNTY

Varnau verdict due by January BY Wayne Gates The Brown County Press A ruling on whether Brown County Coroner Dr. Judith Varnau can remain in office could come as soon as January of next year. The Ohio 12th District Court of Appeals has placed the case on its accelerated docket, meaning that attorneys have less time to submit arguments for consideration. “There are issues in this case which are of great importance to the people of Brown County and the officeholder involved”, wrote Administrative Judge Robert Hendrickson in the Sept. 8 entry. “Appellants argued in the trial court, and continue to argue in their motion for

leave to appeal, that as Brown County Coroner, appellee ‘has willfully and flagrantly neglected to enforce the law’ and that her removal is ‘not only permitted, but warranted and required’’, continued Hendrickson. “The court finds good cause has been shown for appeal, and the motion for leave to appeal is therefore granted.” Attorney Tracy Hawkins must submit her appellant brief to the court by Sept. 26. Varnau attorney Thomas Eagle will then have 15 days to reply, and Hawkins will have five days to respond. That process will take until early to mid October. Hawkins has told The Brown County Press that she will request to present oral argu-

ments to the court, which are normally scheduled within thirty days after all briefs are submitted. That would place oral arguments in November. Normal court procedure is to have a ruling within sixty days of hearing oral arguments, making a verdict due in January of 2015. Judge John Kessler ruled on June 23 that Varnau could remain in office, following a two day trial in May. In his ruling, Kessler wrote that “the court is not convinced that the mistakes (Varnau) has made in the performance of her official duties rise to the level of gross neglect of duty, misfeasance, malfeasance or nonfeasance required by law for her removal.”

The Brown County Board of Elections, shown here in a July meeting, is purchasing a computer system to make it easier to verify proper polling locations for voters.

Board of Elections buys electronic system BY Wayne Gates The Brown County Press The Brown County Board of Elections is moving voting into the digital age. At its Sept. 9 meeting, the board voted to purchase new software which will allow poll workers to check addresses of voters to ensure they are in the right place to vote. The “E Poll Book” system will replace the cumber-

some black binders currently used by poll workers to verify the signatures and addresses of voters. The system will cost just over $56,000, to be paid over three years. The board also discussed changes to polling places that would be necessary to comply with the federal Americans With Disabilities act. The final list of polling places for the November election is expected to be determined by the end of Sep-

tember. After the meeting, Director Kathy Jones said the new system will cut down the number of provisional ballots, which must be cast if there is a question that a voter is in the right place to vote based on the location of their residence. “When voters come in, if someone is not in that electronic poll book, the poll workers can determine if CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

The cost of transferring land ownership in Brown County is going up. The Brown County Commissioners approved increasing the land conveyance fee from $3.00 per thousand dollars of value to $4.00. The $3.00 rate had been in place since 1989. The move is expected to generate between $80,000 and $100,000 per year for the county general fund. Brown County Auditor Jill Hall said that she discovered while talking to auditors in surrounding counties

that all of them had land conveyance fees higher than $3.00 per thousand. “If you buy a piece of property for ten thousand dollars, the fee will now be $40.00 for the conveyance of that deed, plus fifty cents per parcel”, said Hall. “Most of the counties in Ohio are at $4.00 per thousand. I found a few at $5.00 and one at $6.00. I just felt that we should be on par with everyone around us.” Hall said that while raising fees may not be popular with everyone, as the caretaker of money in the county, it’s her job to make sure that the dollars are accounted for carefully.

“I’ve got to always be looking at how we can pay for what we do for the citizens of the county. If this adds eighty thousand dollars to the daily needs of the people of the county, then it’s worth it.” Brown County Commissioner Barry Woodruff said that he appreciated Hall’s efforts. “We continue to face a number of financial challenges as we try to keep the county moving forward”, Woodruff said. “An additional $80,000 to $100,000 will allow us to solve a few more problems like leaky roofs or other needs we have.”

Three indicted by jury BY Wayne Gates The Brown County Press Three people were indicted by a Brown County Grand Jury on Sept. 5 on a variety of charges. Sherry McMillion, 36 of Georgetown, is charged with one count of Burglary, a second degree felony and one count of Theft of Drugs, a fourth degree felony. Charles Bryant, Jr., 56

of Russellville, is charged with three counts of Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol, a Drug of Abuse or a Combination of Them, all third degree felonies. Bryant was previously convicted of or plead guilty to five similar offenses in Brown County, dating back to 1998. Rachel Delisle, 36 of Aberdeen, is charges with Fail-

ure to Comply with an Order or Signal of a Police Officer, a third degree felony, and two counts of Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol, a Drug of Abuse or a Combination of Them, both first degree misdemeanors. An indictment means that an individual has been charged with an offense. It is not a finding or admission of guilt.

Aberdeen dedicates 9/11 Memorial with all day event The Village of Aberdeen held a very special memorial dedication in remembrance of 9/11, Saturday, Sept. 6 in the village park. The all day event was opened by William Eastwood, Chief of Aberdeen Huntington Township Volunteer Fire Department and Life Squad. He thanked a long list of people and businesses in the area for making the memorial a reality. The village applied for and received an I-beam weighing over 2,200 pounds and approximately 79 inches long that was taken from the site of the World Trade Center. An octagon shaped slab of concrete was built and the I-beam was erected in the center, with the memorial visible from the Ohio River. Eastwood then introduced a very emotional Mayor of Aberdeen, Jason Phillips, who had a few words to say to the hundred or so people and emergency responders in attendance of the event. Mayor Phillips, said that the memorial dedication

marked a turning point for the village. “I’d like to thank everyone for coming out today,” he began, “This dedication means a lot to me and my family. I want to thank our police department, the EMT’s, our fire department and everybody. Our community is pulling back together like it should be. So many people have spent so many hours here making this all happen. Lets all re-

member what we live for.” Mayor Phillips received a standing ovation for his comments. Following the singing of the National Anthem by Harriett Jackson Groh, a moment of silence was held in honor of the victims of 9/11. Taking the stage next was Police officer Shawn Newman, who described how the village was able to bring the I-beam from New

York to Aberdeen. State Senator Joe Uecker then spoke briefly about how Americans continue to rise to any challenge and State Representative Doug Green said he was humbled to be asked to speak at the event. He said he was proud of Aberdeen for stepping up to the plate constructing the forever memorial to 9/11. Green also sang several patriotic songs at the event.

Former state representative Danny Bubp then took the stage and thanked everyone for coming out to the event. “What a beautiful day this has turned out to be,” Bubp said, “Can I have all the EMS, the Air Evac, all our life squad members, our fire department guys, our Veterans, anyone who is in the military to come up here in front of the stage CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

Jina Bohl, director of curriculum and instruction at Western Brown Local Schools, was recently named to the Success by 6® Regional Leadership Council. She will represent Brown County. Bohl has organized all five Brown County Schools with hopes of making Brown County an important part of the regional leadership council. “Today (Sept. 9) we had our very first meeting with representatives from all five Brown County schools,” Bohl said energetically, “everyone involved is very excited and we are also happy to have a voice in the big picture of the Success by 6® program.” Representatives attending the meeting with Bohl included Greg Barlow of Fayetteville, Aric Fiscus of Ripley, Carrie Kratzer of Georgetown, Katrina Wagoner and Mike Bick of Eastern, Benita Haas from Head Start and Joan Garrett from Brown County Educational Service Center Pre-K services. Bohl said that statistics show that 90 percent of public expenditures occur after age five. “That means that all this money goes into the schools and programs in the schools after a child is in first grade,” Bohl said, “but the problem with that is, 90% of a child’s brain develops before that child turns six. To me, that’s just unaccept-

able. That child can be so far behind by the time they enter kindergarten, they may never really catch up.” Bohl continued, “And now schools have the ‘third grade reading proficiency tests’ that the students must pass in order to move onto fourth grade reading.” Bohl said that at Western Brown, the third grade proficiency scores have now been rated by sub groups. The numbers show that 74% of all children at Western passed the third grade reading assessment test. But the numbers also showed that of the children who received pre-kindergarten experience, 82% of them passed. “Those are interesting numbers,” Bohl said, “but sadly, of the third graders who were economically disadvantaged and had no pre-

K experience, only 38% of those children passed the tests. “So what does that tell us? It tells us that those years when children are 3, 4 and 5, pre-K, are the most importants years in their lives for learning. “That’s where the Success by 6® program comes in. It is getting results and by being organized and sharing what works, we are helping our kids get a good start in their lives.” Bohl said the HIPPY program (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters) has been proven to be one of the most successful programs now in use. According to Bohl, HIPPY introduces skills and concepts in a progressive manner, first using the physical body, then con-

crete objects and finally representation of objects in pictures, followed by many opportunities for practice and learning. All this is done as early as age 3. United Way Success by 6® has driven the vision of kindergarten readiness

throughout the Greater Cincinnati region fo r the past 10 years. This summer the program launched a new ‘center of excellence; operating model designed to accelerate progress, scale proven strategies and more effec-

tively champion investments and system changes needed to reach the region’s goal of 85% of children ready by 2020. To learn more about the Success by 6® program Bohl can be reached at (937) 444-2044.

Mike Wright, president of Citizens for RULH Students, along with Linda Naylor, superintendent Ripley-UnionLewis-Huntington School District, attended the Sept. 9 Ripley Village Council meeting. The pair wanted to invite the mayor and council to an October 9, free community supper and informational meeting to be held at the Ripley Life Squad building. “We wanted to personally give council members a handout which has information on it about the upcoming election,” Wright said. “The district is trying again to pass a desperately needed 2.6 mill permanent improvement levy which will generate over $250,000 a year for the next five years. The community dinner will be a 7 p.m. at the Life Squad building and we would appreciate your support for RULH schools.” Wright told council that RULH schools need to move

into the future insuring the following improvements: • new technology, (computers and mobile devices • new security systems • five new buses • updated textbooks, • new air conditioning and heating systems at the 25 year old high school • parking lot resurfacing • upgraded electrical system • new hot water system • improved indoor air quality/ventilation systems “All these improvements cost money,” Wright said. “The money from this levy will only be used for permanent improvements.” Councilwoman Nowana Bingaman asked Wright if any of the funds from the levy could be used to pay salaries or anything like that. Wright responded, “No it can only be used for permanent improvements. Some of our buses have well over 100,000 miles and need replaced. With funds from this levy we can purchase five buses in the next five years.” In other business at the

Village of Sardinia Chief of Police Jim Lewis approached council at its Sept. 8 meeting asking for approval for the purchase of two new cruisers. Council unanimously agreed to move forward on the purchase. Chief Lewis told council that he has been watching for a good deal on one new cruiser to replace his department’s aging 2006 and 2007 cruisers, which were used vehicles when bought by the village. “I’ve been looking for a good deal and I contacted Jeff Wyler at Eastgate about the purchase of a 2014 cruiser, but he didn’t have any and won’t have any more,” Chief Lewis said. “But he did have two 2013 brand new, white cruisers that were ordered but never picked up. One is a 2013 Dodge Charger V-6 which costs $19,900 and the other is a 2013 Dodge Charger V8 which costs $21,500. Wylers only had the one V6, but he had three of the V8’s. These cruisers originally would have cost over $25,000.” Council discussed the purchase at length with the chief and Councilman Tom Reifenberger asked Chief Lewis if he could negotiate with Wylers to get two V8’s at the same price that he would pay for one V-6 and one V-8.

Sardinia Chief of Police will be purchasing two new police cruisers for his department. With the upcoming annexation of land into the village, his department may be hiring a new police officer by early 2016.

Chief Lewis plans on talking to Wyler again, but after the fiscal officer explained to council how the costs of the cruisers would be paid, the chief was advised to make a deal to purchase two new cruisers. Sardinia Fire Chief Chris Shumacher then reported to council that his department had seven fire runs since the last council meeting and attended two training sessions.

He said each department could be awarded up to $50,000 if they qualify for the grant. Varnau challenges Bubp Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor, Letter to the Editor, in response to “Judicial Candidates trade barbs,” Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014: Let me fill in from the article last week what Mr. Bubp has actually been saying, “While I’m out going door to door talking to Brown County residents about” that “crazy nut Varnau.” Now why would Mr. Bubp approach my friends, call me a “crazy nut,” and then ask them for their vote? Is this the kind of character, lack of intelligence, and total lack of common sense you would expect in a person desiring to become a judge? I have always publicly stood for upholding the law and applying it equally to all individuals, including myself, and everyone else, especially elected officials who continually break the law, yet get a “free ticket” to do so by the prosecutor. I understand why a politician would be openly calling me a “crazy nut.” Why would a political “judge wanna-be” oppose

upholding the law against politicians as much as it is foisted against the general public, unless he had some skeletons in his closet? What further bothers me is how Mr. Bubp is crying like a pubescent female over something that SHOULD be brought to the attention of the voting public prior to the election. What Mr. Bubp refers to as “allegations” seems to me to be more like “cold, hard facts” that could easily be verified by any reporter worth his/her investigative salt. If such “allegations” are true, Mr. Bubp could potentially lose his law license, which means he could not remain in office as juvenile court judge, if elected. When it comes to judicial ethics provisions, would Mr. Bubp agree with my opinion that the following examples may also be violations, or at the very least, indicators that the integrity of a candidate may be defective enough to preclude one’s candidacy, much less hold office:

Would it be ethically wrong for a judicial candidate to blatantly lie to the public (“Real Marines don’t cut and run.”)? Would it be ethically wrong for a judicial candidate to sic a government entity on a former girlfriend or boyfriend for vindictive purposes, for whatever reason? And, Mr. Bubp, since the documentation in your case is now readily available with all the “FACTS” clearly printed therein, and, since it is not a violation of the judicial ethics rules for you to openly talk about your case, and, since the families of Brown County need a genuine family-values orientated juvenile court judge, don’t you think it would be in everyone’s best interest (except maybe yours) to address the allegations and set the record straight prior to the election? Or do you need more specific details for the questions needing answers above? Dennis Varnau Georgetown

Steddom violated rules

Dear Editor, I am writing regarding the front page article in last week’s Brown County Press. In the interest of full disclosure, I must first state that Danny Bubp is a close personal friend of mine whom I view as family. Now on to the issue at hand. It seems to me that Ms. Steddom has made two serious mistakes, both of which would seem to make her an unfit Judge. First, Ms. Steddom has predetermined the guilt of Danny based upon a politically motivated Court filing with no substance. Shouldn’t a Judge reserve judgment until after the evidence is presented by both

sides? Is this the kind of Judge you want handling sensitive cases involving our children? Secondly, Ms. Steddom did not understand the law as it relates to the Conduct of Judicial Candidates. Specifically, she has violated Canon 4, rule 4.1 (A) 5 which prohibits a judicial candidate from commenting on any case pending on any judge’s docket unless it would pertain to her. This matter will be referred to the Disciplinary Council of the Ohio Supreme Court and will be dealt with as they see fit. It is truly a shame that Ms. Steddom chose to go negative in her campaign. Frankly, I’m

sick and tired of negative campaigning and I’m certainly tired of all of the negative press Brown County seems to attract. I continue to support Danny Bubp for Judge of brown County Probate/Juvenile Court. I would trust Danny with my life, just like so many other people have done through his dedicated service to our great country in so many ways. Charles Ashmore Georgetown

Dear Editor, The 26th annual Brown County Veterans Recognition program will be held at the Brown County fair on Thursday, September 25, 2014. All veterans, current military personnel, auxiliaries and JROTC units are cordially invited and encouraged to participate in this event. As has been the custom the past few years, two buses from the Ohio Veterans Home in Georgetown will transport veterans to the event via buses. Veterans and miliary personnel outside of the ring will be invited into the arena prior to the service. All participants are requested to assemble at the gate of the main arena entrance at 5 p.m. The program will begin at 6 p.m. Ample chairs will be available in the arena for all who wish to sit for the affair. In case of inclement weather the program will be held in one of the buildings located on the fair-

ground. The 1st platoon will assemble to the right of the gate and be commanded by U.S. Air Force veteran Gary Bodley. The platoon will consist of the Marine Corps League (color guard), V.F.W., AMVETS, DAV, Vietnam Vets Motorcycle Club, and the Vietnam Veterans of America. The MJROTC unit from the RULH High School in Ripley with a United State Marine Corps affiliation will fall into ranks with this group. The 2nd platoon will form to the left of the gate. U.S. Army veteran Ed Bailey will be in charge of this group. It will consist of all the various American Legion posts. The AJROTC students from the Western Brown High School located in Mt. Orab with a U.S. Army affiliation will follow the veterans in this platoon. The program will feature the following personnel: The

Chaplain will be Vietnam U.S. Army veteran Bill Graybill; Colonel Danny Bubp United States Marine Corps Reserves Retired and Iraq war veteran will be the main speaker. The two buglers will consist of U.S. marine Corps veteran Jim Smith and Butch Davis who saw service with the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps. Mr. Davis will have on display in the arena during the event his World War II Willys Jeep. Entertainment for the Veterans Recognition night will once again be Ohio State Representative of the 66th District, the Honorable Doug Green. Rep. Green has sung at every one of these programs from the very beginning. Included in his repertoire will be his popular United States Armed Forces medley. For God and Country, Rick Rhoades Adj. Dear Editor, In regards to the Julie Steddom article. Here we go again - I am sick and tired of politics. Sometimes I feel like not voting at all, even though its our right and privilege to do so. I am ashamed of our government and our president as to whats happening in our country. Its one big joke. As for lawyers and judges, come on Julie. Three-fourths of them have done many things unethical over the years. Just recently I went to Brown County Small Claims Court against a person who did a shoddy job for me. It costs me approximately $100.00 after I spent $1000.00 with a lawyer. After the guy did not show up for his three court dates the judge said I won. Bring me back and estimate of repairs and we’ll get it settled. Upon going back as told, the fellow shows up. I’m saying to myself ‘what’s going on?’ The judge then asks me if I brought a lawyer. I was

thinking by now ‘does he have dementia? Is he on drugs?’ I said no and he let the fellow speak and 2 days later he sent me a letter saying he found in favor of the contractor. Now is that ethical or not? I won, but lost. I will never go back to Brown County Court again. Danny Bubp, who I never personally met or had the privilege of meeting would be a hard act to follow. He is every where any time, any place he’s needed, just doing good work for others. He’s in the public eye enough you feel like you know him personally. He’s a wonderful veteran, served his country well, and that says a lot to me. I would not want to run against him. I do not know Julie either but would like to see her credentials in order to know what she stands for. Julie needs to go out and run on her own record. Be proud of who she is and let the dirty work to Janette Jackson, who hasn’t done anything evidently for 4 years with her fathers estate

until voting time. let the law decide. Americans are tired of smut in our country. Thats all we get daily. If she’s concerned why did she wait 4 years? Sounds like D.C. Give us something good about yourself Julie. We readers need that. Tell us about your experience with youth. Give us facts about yourself not someone else. Let us decide how we feel about you. This is the first time I ever saw your picture and I see your signs, but I can’t vote on just that. My dad always said if you can’t find something good to say of a human being, keep quiet. I dare say everyone in Brown County has seen Danny Bubp in action, and is highly regarded because he goes forth doing good. Is this not what the world needs? This does certainly not mean he’s the best candidate for this job, but we need to know you better. Give us facts and then we decide. Ginny Fultz

Dear Editor, In Barack Obama’s book ‘Audacity of Hope’, on page 261 he said ‘I will stand with muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction’. In the Holy Bible, book of Proverbs, Chapter 29, Verse 18, it says ‘Where there is no vision, the people will perish”. Wake up America, we are the people who will perish. On Thursday, Aug. 28, President Obama said he had ‘no strategy’ to combat ISIS.

ISIS is a terror group who beheaded tow American and have slaughtered thousands of men, women and children and have their eyes on the United States. Makes me wonder who’s side he is on. Remember, he called the Benghazi killing of four Americans ‘a bump in the road’. He also gave 250 million dollars to the Muslim Brotherhood, our enemies. Do you remember Nadal Hason killing 13 soldiers at Fort Hood? Obama called it work place violence and the

families received no death benefits. While we’re at it, how about him trading five of the most dangerous terrorists in the world for a deserter. One more thing, he has left a Marine hero sitting in a jail cell in Mexico for five months when all he has to do is pick up his ‘famous phone’ and have him released. WAKE UP AMERICA! Huntington Hotshots remember 9/11

BY Clayton Cordell Curtis Huntington Hotshots

This is a day no one will every forget!!!!!!! The Aberdeen Police and Fire Department applied for a grant to receive a piece of the World Trade Center. Ohio only received 2 beams and we were one of the lucky ones to receive one! Fire Chief Will Eastwood brought it to one of our meeting and told us all about it. They have been working hard on getting it

set up and that day has finally arrived. On September 6, 2014 we will be apart of that great honor of dedicating the 9/11 memorial. The Huntington Hotshots would like to give a big thanks to all who gave unselfishly and who gave their lives helping the victims of that horrific day. We would also like to say thank you to the Aberdeen Police, Fire, and Ems for caring so much for our town and taking pride in obtaining this memorial for our town.

Walk for life set for Sept. 20 BY Tamma Plymesser Executive Director, Pregnancy Resource Center - A Place of Hope

The Pregnancy Resource Center announces its 21th annual Walk-for-Life on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at the St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 220 S. High St. in Mt. Orab. The PRC Walkfor-Life serves a two-fold purpose. One—it raises the community’s awareness of the effects of abortion on all involved: mother, father, child and the entire extended family. Two—it serves as a fund-raiser to provide needed funds to continue providing services for the families of infants and toddlers in Brown County and surrounding communities. Participants in the walk will receive prizes for taking part, prizes will also be awarded to those who collect the most money in youth, teen, adult male and adult female categories. The PRC also sponsors a Poster Contest. Prizes are awarded based upon pro-life message and walk theme. You may contact the PRC (937) 3786853 for more details on the Poster Contest. The Pregnancy Resource Center is a non-profit life affirming organization that provides services for women in the midst of unplanned pregnancies. Although all services are provided free of charge, clients participate in parenting and relationship classes in order to earn the items needed. This gives them the knowledge that they earned what they received and they also receive important parenting skills. The PRC receives no government funds: city, state or federal. It is funded entirely with private donations, and fundraisers. Donations of cash as well as baby supplies such as diapers, wipes, formula, baby shampoo, lotion & wash are always welcome. VFW 9772 car show great success

A wonderful crowd turned out for Wilson Sroufe VFW Post 9772’s First Annual Car Show. The event at the Mt. Orab Park was held on Sunday, September 7, 2014. With lots of classic cars and rock and roll music played by DJ Joe Lauders of Lauders DJ Service the day could not have turned out better. There was even a display of new autos from Mount Orab Ford, the show’s generous sponsor. VFW Post members served food and drinks and participants as well as those who came to look; ate, drank and discussed which cars they liked best and which ones had the best chances of

winning the trophies. All in all, it was a great day and even though they were very tired at the end of the day, David Watkins, Post Commander, and Richard Dyer, Car Show Chairman and Post Quartermaster, agreed that everyone was looking forward to having another show next year. The Fan Favorites were a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 owned by Taylor Davis of Georgetown and the Fan Favorite Military Vehicle was a 1948 cj2a Jeep owned by David Murrell of Goshen, Oh. The oldest vehicle at the show was a 1919 Dodge touring car owned by Donald Geary.

THE ARK #2

Last week I left off with David moving the ark of the covenant. Well, as a result a man died when he touched the ark and the Bible says that David was afraid of the LORD that day. The next time he moved it he did it the way God said to move it. It had to be carried by the priests on poles. It was similar to carrying a coffin. In fact, the ark is sometimes called a coffin because the blood of slain animals would be sprinkled on top of it for a sin atonement. It was a picture of a coffin. It represented Christ, His death, and His burial. Jesus is God incarnate, God in human flesh, wood overlaid with gold. He is the Son of God and Son of man. He died on the cross and shed His blood; He arose from the grave and as our high priest He sprinkled His own blood on the ark in the heavenly temple for the atonement of our sins. Now, after David had brought the ark to the city of David he decided to build the temple but God would not allow it (II Samuel 7). Instead God told him that his son would build the temple. It was Solomon who built it and placed the ark in the temple (I Kings 5-8). Time passed, Solomon died, the kingdom splits, and the 10 tribes are carried away by the Assyrians. However the 2 tribes of Judah and Benjamin remained at Jerusalem. They rebelled against God until God said enough is enough and they were carried away by Nebuchadnezzar into captivity in Babylon for 70 years. He took all the golden vessels out of the temple. What do you think he did with the ark of the covenant? What do you think he did with the gold mercy seat? The ark itself was a box; on top of it was the mercy seat (Exodus 25:17-20) with a gold cherubim at each end. What did he do with it? My guess would be that he melted it down; it did not mean anything to him. The temple was destroyed and you never read anymore about the ark. They believe that when the second temple was built, Herod’s temple in the days of Christ, the holy of holies was an empty room. There has been a lot of discussion about the ark of the covenant but it is always: I think. Go with me to Jeremiah 3. Let’s see what God thinks.

DR. CHARLES SMITH

MT. ORAB BIBLE BAPTIST CHURCH WWW.BBMTORAB.COM

Look at verse 16: “And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, saith the LORD, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD: neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit it; neither shall that be done any more.” I was there in Jerusalem in 2010 and they were getting everything ready for the new temple. I seen the laver, the pans and spoons, all the furniture, the uniform of the high priest, the golden candlestick, but not one thing was said about the ark of the covenant. What did verse 16 say: “...in those days, saith the LORD, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD... neither shall that be done any more.” There was a time ladies and gentlemen, before there was an ark and now there is a time when once again there is no ark. If the ark was to be found in the New Testament it would be in Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John; but, it is not there. Go on; search for it if you want to. It is mentioned in the book of Hebrews referring back to the Old Testament and it is mentioned in the book of Revelation. It is where Jesus’ blood was applied by Him when He ascended immediately after He arose from the dead. Look in Revelation 11:19. It is the only place that the ark will be found! Why? Because it is not needed here on earth anymore. Why? Because Jesus made the only sacrifice that God the Father will now accept (Hebrews 10:4-14). Verse 12 states: “But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God”. Jesus offered His blood on the ark of the testimony in heaven for our sins. All you have to do is accept Him as your Saviour!

Kate’s Carryout to close after 65 years Kate’s Carryout, located on state Route 125 west of Bethel, has been a fixture in the community since 1949. The business, which has been a family operation for three generations and is now celebrating its 65th anniversary, will be closing its doors at the end of this month. Diane Hancock, who also operates a catering business from Kate’s, runs the carryout with her mother, Mary Hancock. “I’m 62 and I don’t want to work forever,” Diane says. “Right now, I just want to carry on with my catering business.” Mary Hancock, who is now 86 years old and still works every day, says she too is looking forward to retiring from the business where she’s worked since 1974. “The way it is now, we can never do anything together because when I’m here she’s somewhere else, and if I’m somewhere else, she’s here,” Mary Hancock said. Mary said that even after 40 years, she opens the store and 8 a.m. every day. She works for two hours, and goes home when Diane gets to work. She comes back in at 5 p.m. every evening, and closes up the store at 9. “I just didn’t want to sit down over at the house and do nothing,” Mary said. She said that in her retirement, she is looking forward to taking some day trips with her daughter. Diane’s grandparents, Jack and Kate Eilers, wanted to move out to Clermont County, so they closed their first store, which was located on Race Street in Cincinnati, and opened Kate’s Carryout near Mt. Holly in 1949. Her grandmother was from Lindale, and her grandfather grew up not far away on Fair Oak Road.

“This was a two lane highway when the store was built, and the closest grocery store was an A&P in Mt. Washington,” Diane Hancock said. Diane said that her grandparents used to butcher their own meat in the store, and that after building on to the store in the early 1950s, they lived in an apartment in the building. Mary Hancock said that in the early 1980s she installed the large coolers. Before that, cold products were kept in a refrigerated truck in the garage next to the store. “Every time somebody wanted something we had to go outside to get it,” she said. Diane said that after her mother’s long career, she will be remembered for

here extravagant Halloween costumes – which have included Dolly Parton, a ‘Hooters’ retiree, a hooker, Frisch’s Big Boy, and a rock star – and for sponsoring many local sports teams. She said her mother sponsored Kate’s Master Batters for more than 25 years, as well as the Bethel-Tate Fire Department’s softball team, various women’s softball teams, and many kids teams. “For many years, she sponsored five and six teams a year,” Diane said. Kate’s Carryout will open for the last time on Tuesday, Sept. 30. Even after the carryout closes, Diane will be continuing with her catering business from that location.

Board of Elections buys electronic system CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 that voter needs to go to another precinct. They can even print out the address of the correct polling location and give it to the voter.” Jones said the system will have other benefits for the board of elections as well. “For us, it will allow us to do voter history much faster, it will alleviate a lot of time that it takes to update voter signatures. We try to keep those current and the book based system we have now makes that process difficult because it takes too much time.” Jones said the another benefit to the system would be a faster posting of the “11 and 4 list, the list of people who have already voted in a given election. “You start out with one list at 6:30 in the morning that lists people that have voted absentee, then at 11 and 4, updated lists of who has voted are posted”, Jones said. “The candidates are able to see who has voted, that way, they know who they can go out and try to get to

Our firefighters, our EMT’s, life squad members, our police officers, law enforcement.” Bubp reminded the audience that over 3,000 people died at 9/11 and many others were injured. Broncos stampede to 2-0 Western Brown racks up more than 500 yards of total offense in 59-29 win over Little Miami BY Wade Linville The Brown County Press The Western Brown Broncos racked up 512 yards of total offense to escape Little Miami High School with a 30-point victory in week two on the gridiron, Sept. 5. The Broncos led by only seven points at halftime (28-21), but would pull away in the second half to stake claim to a 59-29 win in their first road game of the season after topping Hillsboro at home in week one. Ba cked by an impressive offensive display, the Bronco air strikes accounted for 368 total yards with 144 yards coming from their ground game. Western Brown's junior quarterback, Chaiten Tomlin, completed 14-of-18 passes, throwing for five touchdowns in a 368-yard performance and averaging 20.4 yards. He would finish with no interceptions. Tomlin also led Bronco ball-carriers with 107 rushing yards off six carries, running in for one touchdown. Bronco senior Nick Osborne took five carries for 32 yards, scoring one touchdown. Senior receivers Christian Dawson and Chaz Patten were on the other end of the majority of Tomlin's

passes. Together, the two receivers totaled 312 receiving yards. Dawson hauled in seven passes for 199 yards and four touchdowns, his longest being a 78 yard reception. Patten pull ed down four catches for 113 yards, averaging 28.2 yards per catch. Although Western Brown head coach Evan Dreyer was pleased to see his offense operate with such efficiency, he felt his crew of Broncos have much more to offer on the gridiron. Their focus coming off two wins to start the season is improvement, significant improvements if they hoped to come out with a victory over Ross in week three. “ We didn't play very well, and that's the bottom line,” said Dreyer. “We weren't ready to go defensively, and we're going to get this fixed. At halftime, our defensive coach did a great job, but it we play like that we're not going to win many games.” The Bronco defense struggled to stop Little Miami's ground attack in the first half and would give up a total of 257 rushing yards and 293 total yards for the enti re game. The Broncos kicked off the second half by taking only 42 seconds to march down the field and finish off a quick drive with a one-

yard touchdown carry by Osborne. Following a successful two-point conversion attempt, the Broncos held a 36-21 lead with 11:18 to go in the third quarter. The Bronco expanded their lead to 44-21 later in the third, topping off a 71yard drive with a 16-yard touchdown rec eption by Dawson, followed by another successful two-point conversion attempt. Not long after Dawson's touchdown catch, it was sophomore receiver Eli Crall coming through with a touchdown reception, followed by a pass to Osborne to complete the two-point conversion to give the Broncos a 52-21 lead. “Offensively, we clicked,” said Dreyer. “We have some very good receivers, and our 'O' line played very well, and Tomlin came along tonight, but we have to make sure he is ready to go for week three.” In two games, Tomlin has recorded a total of 729 passing yards. The only Little Miami touchdown in the second half came with the Broncos' JV players on the field. The Broncos' continued their stretch of four straight road games with a nonleague battle against Ross High School in week three on the gridiron, Sept. 12.

Western Brown girls’ tennis team rises to 12-1 record Fischer, Keller advance to SBAAC Tourney semi-finals BY Wade Linville The Brown County Press It's been another successful fall season for the Western Brown High School varsity girls' tennis team. The Lady Broncos, headed by coach Max Vavilov, had little trouble claiming their 12th victory of the season against the visiting team from Goshen High School on Sept. 9 at Western Brown High School.

The Lady Broncos were led by their two top singles players, Morgan Fischer and Hannah Keller, both seniors. Fischer faced off against Goshen senior Janna Staehling, and after rallying

back to claim a victory in the first set it was Fischer winning the match. Keller cruised to a victory over Goshen's No. 2 singles player, dominating throughout the match. Fischer and Keller both advanced to the semi-finals of this year's Southern Buckeye Athletic/Academic

Wade Linville/THE BROWN COUNTY PRESS

The Fayetteville-Perry Rockets were on the road at Bethel-Tate High School for week two on the gridiron, suffering a narrow 2619 loss after a gutsy second-half performance while rallying back from a 20-6 deficit at halftime. The Rockets drew first blood, topping off a drive with a touchdown carry by senior Justin Hart to get on the scoreboard with a 6-0

lead early in the first quarter. But the Rocket offense would struggle to put a stop to the Tigers' ground game in the second half, and some penalties didn't aid them in their efforts. The Tigers', backed by impressive gains from ballcarriers such as Alan Haave and Austin Carter, scored 20 unanswered points off three touchdowns to cap off the first half. In the second half it was the Rockets rallying back with fine carries from play-

ers that included juniors Caleb Dowers and Tim Crone (quarterback). The Rockets managed to outscore the Tigers 13-6 in the second half, but it was the first half deficit that would come back to haunt them in their first road game of the season. The Rockets dropped to an 0-2 overall record on the season with losses to Clermont Northeastern and Bethel-Tate. In week three, the Rockets played host to the Batavia Bulldogs with hopes of claiming their first victory under the leadership of their new head coach, Kevin Finch.

Brown County Athletes of the Week CHAITEN TOMLIN, WESTERN BROWN Western Brown High School’s junior quarterback, Chaiten Tomlin, has already racked up a total of 729 passing yards in two games this season. In the Sept. 5 win over Little Miami, Tomlin threw for a total of 368 yards, delivering five touchdown passes to aid the Broncos to a 2-0 record for the season. team hammered away at the goal. But persistence would pay off big for the Wildcat offense in the second half of play, as they racked up four goals to escape Georgetown with a 4-0 victory, dropping the G-Men's record to 2-5 on the season. Georgetown's crew of young attackers struggled for shots on goal against the sturdy Wildcat defense, and confidence would build quickly for the visiting team after they managed their first goal of the day. Goals would come quickly for the Wildcats, and after taking a lead early in the second half they seemed to focus more on offensive play while putting pressure on Georgetown's defense. The G-Men stood at a 2-2 record in SBAAC National Division play following the loss to Blanchester. The G-Men have claimed league victories over Felicity-Franklin (3-2) and Clermont Northeastern (4-1).

Fayetteville’s Caleb Dowers muscles his way to a nice gain in the Rockets’ Sept. 5 contest at Bethel-Tate High School.

Eastern Brown High School’s soccer standout, Kayla Tomlin, has played a huge role in the Lady Warriors success this season. Tomlin scored 13 goals in the Lady Warriors’ first five games of the season with one five goal game and one four goal game. In the opening Southern Hills Athletic Conference game against Ripley, she was the lone scorer with five goals to help the Lady Warriors take their first victory of the conference competition.

Eastern senior Jacob Handra tied the record for goals in a single game with five in the Sept. 8 bout

against the Jays, a contest that started earlier in the season but was postponed with the second half being played out on Monday. “We played good today,” said Eastern boys' soccer coach J.P. As for Monday's performances by Handra and Covert, Gauche was pleased

to see two of his players accomplish a feat they have worked hard for their entire careers. “This was something they have been pushing for all season, and to have a game like this is something they have worked hard for their whole high school careers,” said Gauche. Moyers were early settlers in county

Moyer, an old and honored surname, is principally of German origin. It is of occupational meaning and stems from the German "meier" which first denoted an overseer or steward and later also indicated a farmer. However, according to one well known authority on the origin of names, MOYER is also of Irish origin and signifies "son or descendant of the steward". Nicholas Moyer (17581841) served as privates respectively in the Pennsylvania and New York troops during the Revolutionary War. As additional evidence that bearers of the surname MOYER were among the early settlers of this country, it should be noted that the first census of the United States, taken in 1790, has 159 listings of persons by the name of Moyer who were residents of Pennsylvania and heads of families at that time. **** Seven years later, the Federal Population Census of Ohio for the 1860 contained 162 listings of persons by the name of MOYER, four of whom lived in Brown County. The latter were John, William and George F. Moyer of Pike Township

and Philip Moyer of Georgetown. The progenitor of many of the present-day bearers of the surname MOYER in Brown County and elsewhere was Henry Moyer (1767-1829) who was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania and came to Brown County in 1816 with his two sons, settling near Locust Ridge, Pike Township where he lived until his death. **** His two sons were John Moyer and George F. Moyer who were born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, respectively in 1805 and 1810 and also lived in Locust Ridge. John Moyer was trustee of Pike Township in 1854, 1857, 1858, 1861, and 1862. William H. Moyer, the son of the above-mentioned John Moyer served as sergeant in the 175th regiment of Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Among the early marriages in Brown County was that of Andrew Moyer

and Laura Palmer on May 2, 1885. Harvey Vernon Moyer (1894-1959) was professor of chemistry, Ohio State University. **** Andrew Jackson Moyer (1899-1959) earned widespread recognition as a research scientist and microbiologist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Washington, D.C. Gabriel Hocker Moyer (1873-1949), an attorney of note, practiced his profession in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, and during his career served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for two terms. Kenneth Evan Moyer is professor of psychiatry, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. F. Stanton Moyer is vice president in charge of the Philadelphia office, Kidder Peabody and Company, Inc., a substantial investment securities firm. Robert D.
