mately every two to three weeks, meaning more evidence in the case should be
heard before the end of the month. Tierney said he recog-
nizes that there is a perception among some people that the investigation has taken longer than is should, but that there were a few reasons for the delay. “We had different narratives from what happened in the jail and the reports we got from the coroner. When we have dueling narratives, we have to run down every single lead and every single theory before we engage in a grand jury presentation.”, Tierney said. “There was also a delay in the investigation that was out of our control because the coroner was unavailable during her other (legal) proceedings regarding her office.” Brown County Coroner Doctor Judith Varnau is cur-
rently facing a federal lawsuit, in addition to going through a removal proceeding in May. Visiting Judge John Kessler ruled that she could remain in office. The ruling is currently being appealed to the Ohio 12th District Court of Appeals. Tierney added that the prosecutor assigned to the case, Daniel “Woody” Breyer was assigned the case in early summer, but asked for some additional investigation before preparing the case for a grand jury. Goldson died in his cell on Oct. 5, 2013 in the Brown County Jail. The preliminary cause of death was hanging, according to Varnau. Varnau later changed the cause of death to “homicide”
in December of 2013. Goldson’s death occurred after he attempted to escape custody after being treated at Southwest Regional Medical Center in Georgetown. According to police reports and 911 calls, Goldson attempted to escape from Brown County Jailer Travis Justice in the parking lot of the hospital. Goldson also attempted to take Justice’s gun. The struggle was witnessed by hospital employees, one of whom called 911. “The deputy just had a prisoner out here and he was taking him to his car and they’re out there fighting.”, the caller told the 911 Operator at the Brown County Communications Center last CONTINUED ON PAGE 8
SWRMC closing its doors BY Wayne Gates The Brown County Press Southwest Regional Medical Center has shut its doors, putting over two hundred people out of a job. The Georgetown hospital was closed to patients at 5pm on Friday, Sept. 26 after the facility could not meet its bi-monthly payroll of approximately $500,000. A sign on the doors of the hospital reads that the hospital "is no longer providing any health care services" and directs people to the nearest emergency room. Mercy Mt. Orab maintains an emergency room, as does Clermont Mercy Hospital in Batavia and Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville, Ky. Nanette Bentley, a spokesperson for Mercy Health Systems, said that the Mercy emergency room in Mt. Orab “saw a thirty to forty percent spike in patients”, on Sunday, Sept. 28.

First appeal filed in Varnau case BY Wayne Gates The Brown County Press Attorney Tracy Hawkins filed an appeal last week of the decision to allow Brown County Coroner Dr. Judith Varnau to remain in office. The Ohio 12th District Court of Appeals agreed to hear the case last month, and placed the case on its accelerated docket. Varnau Attorney Thomas
Eagle is fighting the appeal on couple a fronts, including asking the Ohio Supreme Court to tell the 12th District that it may not hear the appeal and asking the 12th district to extend the time that Eagle is allowed to respond to the Hawkins filing. Eagle also asked the 12th district to remove the case from its accelerated docket. If the Ohio Supreme Court allows the case to pro-
ceed, a decision could come by December of this year or January of next year at the earliest. In her filing, Hawkins is claiming that visiting Judge John Kessler made errors when he ruled that Varnau could remain in office, including overlooking the “confiscation and distribution of personal property” at death scenes and the coroner’s “repeated refusal to de-
liver decedent’s firearms to law enforcement”. Hawkins concludes, “Before she took office, Dr. Varnau knew her statutory duties as coroner would include delivering firearms to law enforcement. She wrote letters to the Ohio Attorney General and Brown County Prosecutor indicating her plans not to deliver firearms to the Brown County SherCONTINUED ON PAGE 8

Upon a motion by the State of Ohio, the remaining Counts in the indictment were dismissed. On September 29, 2014, Judge Gusweiler sentenced Mr. Sweet to Life Imprisonment, with parole eligibility after serving thirty years of imprisonment.
Thanks to the efforts of active and involved fair board members and dozens of volunteers, the 2014 Brown County Fair was deemed a huge success by everyone who attended. Brown County fair board secretary/treasurer Juanita Barricklow, says the members of the board deserve a lot of credit for the work they do. “There’s a reason the
Brown County Fair is considered the best fair in Ohio,” Barricklow said. “And I’m not the only person who feels that way. I go to Ohio Fair secretary/treasurer meetings every year, and I listen to everything that’s said. I know without a doubt that the people in this wonderful county and great kids are the reason we have such a successful fair year after year.” She continued, “So many things go on behind the scenes that make a big dif-
ference. For example we had pre-sale tickets going on throughout Brown County at all the banks and also at Grandma and Grandpa’s, Harold’s Quick Shop and Sardinia Milling. It was great, they sold tickets all through September.” Barricklow said that the Thursday night Veterans Recognition was one of the most well attended events at this year’s fair. “There were hundreds and hundreds of people there for the Veterans ceremony,”
Barricklow said. “There is no place like Brown County CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

A Brown County Grand Jury has heard evidence on the death of Zachary Goldson in the Brown County Jail. The Ohio State Highway Patrol's, Georgetown Post, is currently investigating a fatal crash that occurred on September 25, 2014, at approximately 10:46 a.m., on State Route 41, south of Milepost-1, in Huntington Township, Brown County, Ohio. The crash involved a white, 1997, Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck, operated by Michael R. Fryman, age 55, of Maysville, Kentucky, that was traveling northbound on State Route 41. As Fryman was negotiating a right hand curve, 5-gallon bucket of paint fell from his vehicle onto both lanes of State Route 41. At approximately the same time as the paint spilled onto the roadway, a southbound, white 2007 Toyota Tacoma, operated by Terry M. Young, age 58, of West Union, Ohio, drove
through the paint, which caused him to lose control of his vehicle. Young's pickup truck slid left of center into the northbound lane, and was struck by a white, 2007 Freightliner semi-truck, pulling a Great Dane trailer, which was being operated by Rusty G. Chumley, age 41, of Harrogate, Tennessee. Chumley's Freightliner, and Young’s Toyota, traveled off the east side of State Route 41 into an embankment, where both vehicles came to rest. Terry Young was pronounced deceased at the scene. Rusty Chumley and Michael Fryman were not injured. All drivers were wearing their seat belts, and drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be a factor in this crash. Assisting at the crash scene was the Brown
County Sheriff's Office, Coroner's Office, and Prosecutor's Office, Aberdeen Police, Fire, and Emergency Medical Services, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), and the Ohio State Highway Patrol's Reconstruction Unit, Aviation Section, and Motor Carrier Enforcement Unit. State Route 41 was closed for approximately eight-hours for the investigation and cleanup. ODOT was able to reroute traffic around the crash scene. The Patrol is reminds motorists to do their part in keeping roadways safe by always buckling up, never to drive distracted, never driving impaired, slowing down, driving defensively, taking their time, and by being knowledgeable of all roadway laws.

Kroger stores across the state have kicked off their Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign, “Survivor Strong” in celebration of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This marks the fifth year that Kroger and Yoplait have worked together to help raise money for breast cancer research, detection, treatment and prevention. All Kroger stores will be filled with pink products o n the shelves. Part of the money from the sale of the pink products will go to fight breast cancer. The store is paying tribute to survivors who work in all their stores. This year, Georgetown resident Cheryl Bailey, a cashier at the Mt. Orab Kroger, is a the spokesperson for the campaign. Bailey is a ten year breast cancer survivor. “I cannot express enough just how important early detection of breast cancer ca n mean,” Bailey said. “I actually had a mammogram in the fall of 2004 that came back clean. But just a few months later I found a lump in one of my breasts. I started chemotherapy the day after Christmas and doc-
tors found that the cancer has already moved into my lymph nodes and one of my kidneys.” Eventually Bailey lost one of her kidneys, but she is now cancer free. “Working here has allowed me talk to perfect strangers about how important it is to have mammograms and do self examinations. I’ve met many women who are breast cancer survivors and it’s just like a sisterhood.” Bailey’s picture will be featured throughout the month on signs all over the Cincinnati area. She always wears a smile on her face and never hesitates to tell her story of survival. The Kroger Company estimates it will raise over $3 million throughout this campaign. In 2013, according to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed among U.S. women. One in every eight women will face breast cancer in their lifetime. To learn more about breast cancer awareness at the Kroger store visit www.kroger.com or www.americancancersociety.com.

Letters to the Editor
Steddom cleared by Supreme Court Dear Editor, As many of you may know, I am the campaign manager for Julie Steddom, judicial candidate for Brown County's Probate and Juvenile Court. Over the course of the past few weeks, folk have approached me and asked what became of the allegations made by her opponent, Danny Bubp, following her comments to the Brown County Press regarding an Adams county probate case. I have remained silent, until now. The Supreme Court Rules specifically provide that a grievance against a judicial candidate is confidential, and does not become public until after a probable cause determination has been made by a panel of the Board of Commissioners on Grievances
and Discipline. Only the candidate against whom the grievance has been filed can waive that confidentiality. Julie Steddom and I have discussed the matter of Danny Bubp's statement to the press, and those of his campaign manager Charles Ashmore, in which they asserted that she had violated the judicial ethics rules, specifically Canon 4.1(A)(5). In the interest of being completely open and straightforward, Julie has decided to waive her right to confidentiality to the extent of the following statements. On September 11, 2014 Brown County resident Jesse Millikan filed a judicial campaign grievance against Julie Steddom, through his counsel, Columbus attorney,
Jonathan Coughlan, alleging that Julie had violated Canon 4.1(A)(5) by "commenting on a substantive matter relating to a specific case pending on the docket of (a) judge". Julie timely filed her response to the complaint, in which she denied any wrongdoing. On September 19, 2014, the Supreme Court's Board of Commissioners on Grievances and Discipline issued their decision, finding that "no probable cause exists for the filing of a formal complaint". Thus the September 11, 2014 complaint alleging that Julie Steddom's statements to the Brown County Press were unethical, has been dismissed. November 4th, 2014 will soon be come and gone. The fall leaves will
cover the ground, and then the snow will blanket our county's frozen fields, but spring will come, and next year's crops will grow, and our lives will go on. I am proud to be a Brown County resident, and I am ever so proud to be an American, where we are free to choose among the candidates, and free to make informed decisions. With ever so much respect for our American democratic process, I will proudly cast my vote on November 4th for judicial candidate Julie D. Steddom. Christine D. Tailer, Esq. Campaign Manager for Julie Steddom, Judicial Candidate for Brown County Probate/Juvenile Court
Dear Editor, Rarely, actually, never have I been able to endorse first hand any candidate for any position in local, state, or national election. That changes with the upcoming election in November. Over the past few years, my husband and I have been involved with the juvenile court system and Judge Clark on several occasions as we sought legal custody of our granddaughters. The court appointed Julie Steddom as Guardian Ad Litem for both girls. Julie was and continues to be a very vital person in all of our lives, even though the court hearings are over. She was never rushed when she interviewed any of us. She was very knowledgeable with the "ins and outs" of the overall court scene. She explained the routines to us and told us what we could expect through each step of the process. Always, she was professional and truthful. No question that we might ask or comment that we might make or concern that we relayed to Julie was ever neglected. None were considered stupid, trivial, unnecessary. She always answered with not only an answer but also an explanation as to why that answer should be considered. Our granddaughters were not at all intimidated with Julie. She made them feel very comfortable during all meetings that we had. She explained to the girls the importance of the

courtroom procedures. Julie greatly assisted us as grandparents in a new role by encouraging the girls about their placement with us and the reasons why this is the best decision with all the given outside influences. Julie's first priority with the girls was their safety, and this is still her goal, as it is ours. It has been a few years now, and I know without a doubt, that, next to Judge Clark, Julie Steddom is the best choice for the juvenile court! She spends the majority of her days inside that courtroom and is familiar to the rules and structure of it. She is known by many people who frequent the court, whether they are legal representation or people involved in actual cases. Thank, you, Julie! Martha Carey
Pleased to see letter Dear Editor, I was very pleased to see the letter by Janetta Jackson. This gives us something to judge Mr Bubp by. Without this info, that he evidently was trying to hide, all we would have to judge him by is his 'goody two shoes' behavior in front of the camera at public functions. Danny Books Sr.

Bubp not the choice for the judge As a candidate for judge, subject to the ethical guidelines for judges, by his own admission, his unethical personal behavior has created an indelible and irreversible conflict of interest with a patrol officer on the Georgetown Police Department. This adverse relationship created solely by Mr. Bubp’s personal choice to date the wife of a local patrol officer, right here in Georgetown (not Washington D.C.), will survive the election and beyond, and is

not the fault of the officer in any way. Mr. Bubp’s conduct demonstrates a serious lack of “family” values, indicating a genuine “anti-family” bias when his own personal prurient interests are involved. The conduct about which I am writing is widely known among all the officers in the Department, and others in the general public. It is no secret, which makes the situation even more troubling because of the legal relationship that would be established between Mr. Bubp as judge in the same jurisdiction as the officer(s). Mr. Bubp would be in the position, for example, to issue search warrants, possibly causing an unforeseen conflict or claim now from a future third-party interest involved in such warrant. It would be impossible now to identify all the potential legal conflicts or claims that could arise if Mr. Bubp is elected as judge of juvenile court here in Brown County under current circumstances. If Mr. Bubp had the character and integrity expected of judges, he would immediately remove his name as a candidate for judge. By not doing so, he further demonstrates his lack of integrity and distain for the high standards required of an individual to hold such
position. I am surprised Mr. Cornetet is not aware of this significant defect in Mr. Bubp’s character and fitness for the job. If he is aware, or if politics has overridden Mr. Cornetet’s conscience again, I am perplexed why Mr. Cornetet would still be backing Mr. Bubp for a family-oriented judicial position with a “Bubp for Judge” sign in his yard and his irresponsible supportive letter to the editor. Is Mr. Cornetet aware of his good friend’s prurient proclivities? It all makes one wonder why Mr. Bubp abandoned (or was forced out of) Adams County in to Brown County? Dennis Varnau Georgetown

Dear Editor, Letter to the editor in response to Bill Cornetet’s letter to editor support of Danny Bubp for judge in last Sunday’s paper: I emphatically and categorically disagree with Mr. Cornetet’s assessment that Mr. Danny Bubp has the integrity and character necessary to become a judge for juvenile court. Here is my opinion why Mr. Bubp lacks the necessary traits to fill the position (facts, not politics):

The trust consists of unclaimed funds in a class action settlement. “The PRC is a faith based, life affirming, nonprofit organization that provides assistance to expectant mothers and families with infants and children,” Plymesser said. “This assistance can help improve the quality of life for these families and gives parents, who otherwise couldn’t, the ability to keep their child. The PRC has provided assistance to
families in Clermont, Adams and Highland Counties in Ohio and Mason County in Kentucky, in addition to Brown County.” Plymesser and Townley would like to invite anyone who is interested in helping with the work done at the PRC to call the center at (937) 378-6853 to make an appointment or for answers to any questions they may have concerning PRC services. “It is only through the support of the community that the PRC can continue to be “A Place of Hope” to families in need,” Plymesser said.

Who is your Father?
Acts 4:8-12: “Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole; Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” There is only one name given under heaven whereby we must be saved and that is the name of Jesus! Peter, who at one time in his own strength was weak and denying Christ, is now preaching in the mighty power of the Holy Ghost. He is speaking of a miracle which took place by the Temple. Look with me in chapter 3 and begin in verse 2: “And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms. And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us. And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them. Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God.” Do you know what that was? It was truly a miracle. But, ladies and gentlemen, there is a miracle that is just as great that happens most every day. When a person gets saved that too is a miracle. When all of those sins that would send a person to a devil’s hell where he would spend all eternity is washed clean, that is an amazing miracle! It does not matter if you believe in hell or not, hell is

still real. According to Matthew 25:41, hell was prepared for the devil and his angels, not for people. But if you refuse to accept Christ as your Saviour, God is not your Father. Jesus said in John 8:42: “...If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God...” Verse 44: “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do...” If you refuse Christ, Satan is your father and you will join him in hell for all eternity. Mark 9:43-44 states: “...it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.” You might say: Preacher, that is a terrible thing to say. However, it is not a terrible to say because we need to warn people so that they will not go there! Besides that, I didn’t say it, Jesus did. You can take it up with Him. Hell is real, people! The Bible says in Jude 7: “...suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.” That is why it was so very important that the holy, perfect, sinless, Son of God would leave heaven and live here for 33 years, then die on that old rugged cross and shed His precious blood for you and me. That is why it was so very important for Him to rise again the third day and offer His blood on that heavenly altar for the atonement of our sins. He made that sacrifice so that we would not have to suffer the vengeance of eternal fire. But, He allows us to make the choice. He made the way to heaven possible; we make the choice to go there or not by either accepting Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten Son, or rejecting Him. If you accept Christ, God is your Father; If you reject Him, Satan is your father and you will live with Satan for all eternity.

BC Genealogy Fall Family Heritage Day scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 18 BY Martha B. Jacob The Brown County Press Donna Skinner of Mt. Orab is the current president of the Brown County Genealogy group and is excited about its upcoming Brown County Genealogy’s Fall Family Heritage Day scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 18. “This event will be held at the Georgetown Methodist Church in Georgetown,” Skinner said. “This marks our 38th Anniversary of the organization and we plan to have our biggest crowd ever for Family Heritage Day. Nationally we have over 220 members with about a dozen right here in Brown
County who are very active.” Skinner said the group had a very successful Open House held in early spring this year. She said the group has also been very busy working with the libraries and have welcomed researchers from many states including Minnesota, California and Arizona. “We hope we have a huge turnout for anyone and everyone in the county interested in tracking their roots to attend this event,” she said. “The day will begin at 9 a.m. with coffee and donuts. Then we will have a guest speaker, Betty Crum who will talk on the
topic, “Writing Your Family History.” Crum continued, “Then lunch will be served, catered by the Country Inn. The second guest speaker will be award winning educator Paul LaRue who will speak on ways to get the younger generation involved in the family history. Also during the event Linda Sheehy will be inducted into the ‘First Families Society’.” Skinner said she will be offering a brief report on the rich history of Brown County and at least three members will be recognized for tracing their family heritage back to one of the first families in Brown County.
Skinner said that the day will also include cake and door prizes. “This Family Heritage Day is open to anyone who would like to attend,” she added, “and it’s a great way to meet other researchers to share ideas on researching family history, whether you have been researching for years or just getting started. Members attend for free, while nonmembers only have to pay $12 to cover the cost of the lunch.” To attend this special event please call (937) 444-4188 or email br.co.genealogy@gmail.co m. Reservations should be made as soon as possible.

ered in front of the hospital to protest the fact that they had not been paid. Emergency Room Nurse Cathy Cundiff expressed typical sentiments for the group. “I’m very aggravated because I have not been paid. I am the sole supporter of my household and we cannot pay bills because we have no paychecks.” Cundiff said she’s upset about having to leave her job and co-workers with two hours notice. “It’s not like we can’t get jobs elsewhere, but this was our home...and now it’s gone.” SWRMC attorney Rob Hoskins came out of the hospital and addressed the group after meeting with SWRMC Chief Operating Officer Roger Rieger. He said that the closure of the hospital on short notice was the result of last minute negotiations falling through.
“We are working to get everybody paid, but one of our concerns is that if we put money back into the account, another creditor may garnish it. I have been told that the owner (Krishna Surapaneni) has guaranteed that everybody will be paid.” Regarding the future, Hoskins said “What’s going to happen with the hospital is still an unknown. We apologize because this is not how anybody wanted things to happen. I understand your frustration and I am frustrated as well.” Regarding other services in or near the hospital, Air Evac Lifeteam 89 posted on its local facebook page that “We are saddened to hear of the closure of SWRMC. Our hearts go out to the employees that have been dedicated to providing health care in Brown County. Please know Air Evac 89 will remain in operation as normal.” The OB/GYN Practice of Dr. Judith Varnau and Dr.
Barbara Patridge will continue to operate as well. Office Manager Venita Milburn said “”Women’s Health will continue to be open here at the hospital in our same location as long as we are allowed to. If that changes, we will notify everyone as quickly as we can.” Kim Brown of Brown County Health Care said that as of Oct. 1, all employees had continued to work but they have not yet been paid. She added that she knew of at least one employee that had been able to cash a small mileage reimbursement check as of Oct. 2. The hospital closure came about because of a court order from Brown County Common Pleas Court on Aug. 11 allowing the CIT Group, owners of the hospital's MRI machine, to garnish 810,305.22 from the SWRMC bank account. The hospital filed a motion opposing the garnishment, but Magistrate W. Kenneth Zuk
Goldson grand jury meets CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 October. Georgetown Police Officers Robert Gifford, Walt Griffith and Matthew Staggs responded and help secure Goldson. An incident report filed by Gifford lists the response time at 2:25 a.m. and that the purpose of the call was “Assist BCSO Deputy Justice, who was assaulted by an inmate during a gun grab/escape attempt.”
Goldson was secured and taken back to the Brown County Jail. At 2:58 a.m., a call for an ambulance was made from the jail. “Bring me a squad to the back sally port. The prisoner you just brought in is hanging.”, the female caller said. “He’s what?”, asked the 911 Operator. “Hanging”, the caller replied. Goldson had been in his
cell for less than thirty minutes after being returned from Southwest Regional Medical Center. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was called in to investigate the incident. Goldson was 24 years old and was listed as being from Reading, Ohio. He was in the Brown County Jail after being indicted by a Brown County Grand Jury on Sept. 16.
Goldson was charged with discharging a weapon across Delhi-Arnheim Road on August 24. He faced an additional charge of Having Weapons Under Disability because of a previous juvenile conviction for Burglary in Hamilton County in 2004. He also faced a charge of Unlawful Possession of Dangerous Ordinance because the shotgun he was using had been sawed off.
First appeal filed in Varnau case CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 iff. Even though she was specifically instructed to deliver firearms to law enforcement, including the Brown County Sheriff, Dr. Varnau refused. This is willful misconduct that shocks the conscience and creates unnecessary risks to public safety. This willful misconduct requires that Dr. Varnau be removed from the office of Brown County Coroner.” Eagle is asking the Ohio Supreme Court to rule that
the Ohio 12th District Court of Appeals does not have jurisdiction to hear the case. In a Sept. 17 filing before the high court, Eagle submitted a “Complaint for Writ of Prohibition”, asking the court to find that the lower appeals court cannot hear the appeal of Hawkins. In agreeing to hear the case on Sept. 8, 12th District Administrative Judge Robert Hendrickson wrote “There are issues in this case which are of great importance to
the people of Brown County and the officeholder involved. Appellants argued in the trial court, and continue to argue in their motion for leave to appeal, that as Brown County Coroner, appellee ‘has willfully and flagrantly neglected to enforce the law’ and that her removal is ‘not only permitted, but warranted and required.’’ Hendrickson continued, “The court finds good cause has been shown for appeal, and the motion for leave to
appeal is therefore granted.” The 12th District Appeals Court must respond to the complaint by next week. The appeals court will prepare a briefing on its decision to hear the appeal, and the Ohio Supreme Court will then consider that response and the filing from Eagle before making a ruling. If the Ohio Supreme Court allows the case to continue, oral arguments will be heard by the 12th district appeals court next month.

overruled the motion on Sept. 25. The next day, the CIT group seized the money in the account. "They were successful in taking out $300,000 in cash, which is a large part of our payroll.", said Rieger. "The judge has also approved their ability to intercept any payments from private insurance companies." Rieger said that negotiations between the group and SWRMC Owner Krishna Surapeneni continued until three hours before the hospital closed, but they were unsuccessful. "He said that they are asking for some things that just can't be done and under the circumstances, we can't guarantee that we will have the right staffing to meet our medical needs and we don't want to put patients at risk, so I guess we have to close the hospital.", Rieger said. He said that with an empty bank account, there was no choice but to suspend payroll.

"I didn't want to hand out checks that weren't good. I know that it's not an easy thing and it's a lot of hardship for people, but at least we're being honest and up front with them and that's important to me and I think it's important to them as well." He added that employees would be provided with letters stating that they had been laid off to facilitate any unemployment claims. The CIT group filed a lawsuit for non payment on the MRI lease in August of 2013, alleging that payments on the MRI machine had not been made for a number of years, dating back to when the hospital was a public entity under the control of the Brown County Hospital Board of Trustees. "It goes back to when the county owned the hospital.”, said Rieger. “I'm not aware of the reason why, but the lease payments were stopped. That followed through every subsequent owner to the
point where the current lien is about $800,000." Rieger said that a small staff would remain for a short period of time to wind down the operations of the hospital. Rieger said that the experience of seeing the hospital close was very difficult. "I feel about as lousy as you can get. I've grown fond of Georgetown and a lot of the employees are friends of mine. It's never easy when you believe in something and it has to go away." He added that it was also very difficult to have to break the news to hospital employees. "It was really emotional. Some expressed anger and frustration, others were very sad to see it close. We really tried to make things work and it just didn't work out." Surapaneni also owns Meadowwood Care Center and is in the process of reopening the facility. Rieger said "I asked him about that and he said that things are still on track."
Bob McEwen appointed to SSCC Board of Trustees Courtesy of The Highland County Press Governor John Kasich's office has announced that Bob McEwen of Cincinnati (Hamilton County) has been appointed to the Southern State Community College Board of Trustees for a term beginning Oct. 1, 2014 and ending May 11, 2018. A native of Hillsboro and graduate of Hillsboro High School, McEwen represented Ohio's Sixth District in the United States House of Representatives for six terms (1981-1993), where he served in roles including Chairman of the Environmental Affairs Task Force of the United States delegation to the European Parliament and as Special Presidential Envoy for Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. As a congressman, McEwen was elected to the Select Committee on Intelligence and the House Committee on Rules. McEwen has also worked as a senior adviser at Greenebaum, Doll & McDonald, a leading national law firm with offices in Cincinnati and Washington D.C., and currently serves as a member of Congressional leadership team. McEwen was first elected to Congress in 1980, succeeding Rep. Bill Harsha in the Sixth District of Ohio, which then consisted of Adams, Brown, Clinton, Fayette, Highland, Pickaway, Pike, Scioto, and Ross counties plus portions of Clermont, Vinton and Warren counties. In 1992, the old Sixth District was re-drawn after Ohio's loss of two House seats. Thus, McEwen faced a contentious primary with fellow Republican Clarence Miller of the neighboring 10th District. After a heated primary, McEwen prevailed, only to lose in the 1992 general election to Democrat Ted Strickland, who later served as governor of Ohio. McEwen faced ethical charges of bouncing checks on his House bank account during the campaign. The next year, in 1993, McEwen lost to Rob Portman in a special election to fill the

seat of Congressman Bill Gradison of Ohio's Second Congressional District. In 2005, McEwen was unsuccessful in seeking the Republican nomination for Congress in the Second District special election to replace Portman, who accepted the position of U.S. trade representative under President Bush. McEwen finished second to the winner in the general election, former Congresswoman Jean Schmidt, who later lost to current Rep. Brad Wenstrup of Cincinnati. Last week, Rob Nichols, press secretary for Gov. Kasich, told The Highland County Press that the governor's office is working with SSCC Board Chair Doug Boedeker, President Kevin Boys and Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor John Carey "for names and ideas of who to talk to." "Far more importantly than just shoehorning a person into the position, we want to make sure it's the right person," Nichols said. This week, Chancellor Carey told The Highland County Press that the “vetting process” is very important in the appointment of college trustees. It was not immediately clear which of Southern State’s five counties (Adams, Brown, Clinton, Fayette or Highland) McEwen will represent. The Highland County Press has asked President Boys, SSCC Board Chair Boedeker, and McEwen for comment. McEwen and his wife, Liz, reside in Anderson Township in Cincinnati. They have four children.

Cahall: A Showman of Showmen
CMYK
BY Wade Linville The Brown County Press For local students, the Brown County Fair and a week off from school can be a lot of fun, but for those with projects to show, the fair can also mean a great deal of hard work. During this year's Brown County Fair, a decade of hard work paid off for Tristen Cahall, a sophomore at Ripley-UnionLewis-Huntington High School and member of the Day Hill Dirt Kickers 4-H Club. For the past 10 years, Cahall has been involved in 4H, and this year marked his seventh year of showing goats at the fair. Since he began showing animals, one of his ultimate goals was to win the title of Showman of Showmen, and this year he would accomplish that goal. “Showman of Showmen has been my main goal to achieve, and I'm astounded that I actually got it,” said Cahall. With the help from one of the eight goats that were his projects at this year's Brown County Fair, Cahall outshone all competitors in the Goat Department's Showman of Showmen competi-
tion held Sept. 24, displaying his knowledge and experience gained from showing goats at the fair since he was eight years old. “I started showing goats at the fair when I was eight, the earliest I was allowed,” said Cahall. “I've stuck with showing goats every year, and I really enjoy it.” For Cahall, raising goats as a 4-H project is a yearround job, one that requires a great deal of responsibility. Feedings come at least twice a day, and that doesn't include the extra effort that comes with the grooming and additional care in preparation for the fair; but for the committed Day Hill Dirt Kicker it has been well worth it. Cahall's Showman of Showmen award received this year follows so many grand and reserve champions from previous years that he was unable to place an exact number on just how many. He also enjoys the opportunity to work with younger 4-H members with their projects, and competing against others. “I'm really competitive overall, so I enjoy the competitiveness in showing animals at the fair. I also enjoy being able to work with

Reeves/Bush engaged Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Reeves of Winchester, are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Clarissa Dawn Reeves to Justin Carl Bush, son of Randy and Carol Bush of Mt. Mr. Bush is completing his business degree at Mount Vernon Nazarene University and is employed with The Tractor Supply Company in Mount Vernon, Oh. A December wedding is planned. The Brown County Press would like to congratulate Miss Reeves and Mr. Bush on their engagement and upcoming wedding.
younger showers, teaching them how to show properly,” said Cahall. “I feel I have gained responsibility throughout my whole experience, and communicating with judges is sometimes like communicating with a boss on a job, so that has helped me prepare for my future.” Showing animals at the Brown County Fair and being involved in 4-H has been a family tradition for Cahall and his family. His mother, Crystal Cahall, is the long-time advisor of the Ripley Day Hill Dirt Kickers 4H Club, and his father, Todd Cahall, is also very supportive of the 4-H club. Tristen Cahall's two elder brothers were also showers of animals at the Brown County Fair. “My family has been very supportive through all of my years of 4-H, and they push me to do my best since they have all done it themselves,” said Cahall. His parents have come to understand the benefits that can be gained through 4-H and animal projects, and therefore leave the goat-raising up to him. “They have taught me how to do things right over the years, but they don't help me raise the goats. My parents leave it all up to me,” said Cahall. “If I didn't raise them myself, then I would feel like it's not my project. This is something I enjoy doing, and I take a lot of pride in it.” The huge smile on his face that followed the compliments from the judge as he was named this year's Showman of Showmen displayed just how much pride and effort Cahall takes in his goat project. It's for certain that he has represented himself, his family, his 4-H club, and his community to the highest degree; not only as this year's Showman of Showmen, but also as a Goat Department Ambassador. For those who missed the opportunity to see Cahall compete for Showman of Showmen at this year's fair, there is always next year or even the year after. He is still

eligible to show goats for the next three years, but only plans to do so until he graduates from high school. “I have three more years to show, but I don't think I'm
going to show in my first year of college. If I am away at college there is no way I will be home enough to take care of my goats, which would leave my parents tak-
ing care of them while I'm away. Like I said, if I don't raise them all myself, then I feel like it's not my project.”

New member of the Sons of the American Revolution Genealogical research has proven that Sam Gilkison, a resident at the Ohio Veterans Home, Georgetown, has an ancestor who fought in the American Revolution. Operation Ancestor Search (OAS) is a program offered to veterans who want to explore their family ancestry. It has been through OAS volunteer researcher Lee Wilkerson that Gilkison's ancestor's Revolutionary War service has been documented. Gilkison's ancestor was Lt. Col. George Wilson, who served in the 8th Regiment, Pennsylvania Continental Army, and participated in the battle of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, in 1774. Lt. Col. George Wilson died at Quibbleton, New Jersey, in 1777. Gilkison's ancestor's service in the Revolution qualifies him to become a member of the National Society, Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), which was established by the U.S. Congress in 1889. The SAR is a historical, educational and patriotic non-profit corporation which seeks to maintain and extend the institutions of American freedoms, patriotism and the value of American citizenship. Plant it and they will come BY Faye Mahaffey Master Gardner Volunteer The past few days have been exciting at the Mahaffey’s. I was on the front porch watering the herbs and discovered 8 caterpillars munching away on my Bronze Fennel! This unruly patch of volunteer fennel has been under my protection for the entire summer since it decided to grow around the steps that allow quick access to the yard from the porch. My husband would grumble as I reminded him that fennel is the perfect host plant for Eastern Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes) larva. Other Host/Larval food plants include: Carrot, Celery, Common Rue, Dill, Mock Bishop Weed, Parsley, Queen Anne’s Lace, Water Cowbane, and Wild Parsnip. These beautiful butterflies have 2 broods each year. The egg is pale yellow and laid singly. The egg is between 1/32 and 3/64 inch and takes 4 to 8 days to hatch. When it hatches, the caterpillar is about 1/8 inch. In its earliest stages, the caterpillar is dark and covered in tiny spikes. It has a patch of white on top, called a saddle. As the caterpillar matures, it gradually loses its spikes and becomes striped and spotted. Usually the caterpillars are green with black bands, but sometimes we might see a black one. All have yellow spots on
each body segment. As the caterpillar goes through each instar (the caterpillar growth period between each molt of the old skin), its appearance will change. The caterpillar stage is for 14 – 24 days. In the last instar, the caterpillar is about 2 inches long. When the caterpillar is ready for the next phase, it hangs upright on a twig and spins a silk thread, or girdle, around its body. The chrysalises may vary in color from bright green and yellow to dull brown and tan. The chrysalis stage can be as short as 10 days. If it is the last brood, which overwinters, it will not emerge until spring. Where can you find the adult Eastern Black Swallowtails? They might be gathering in groups at muddy areas, especially those next to streams, to sip dissolved salts and minerals. This behavior is called puddling. They also feed on Aster, Azalea, Blazing Star, Blue Mistflower, Brazilian Verbena, Butterfly Bush, Chives, Clover, Garden Phlox, Hyssop, Lantana, Milkweed, Monarda, Pentas, Purple Coneflower, Spirea, Sweet William, Thistle, and Zinnia. Chris Earley, author of Caterpillars, shares fantastic photographs and information about the four stages to a butterfly or moth’s life cycle. Adults, as well as children, can use this book to identify differ-

Rockets claim first victory of season F’ville takes down Notre Dame in week 5 BY Wade Linville The Brown County Press In their best all-around performance so far this season, the Fayetteville-Perry Rockets were able to capture their first victory while hosting Notre Dame of Portsmouth in week five on the gridiron, Sept. 26. The Rockets, who showed good signs in previous games this season, put together a solid performance in all four quarters during week five to come away with 29-13 victory in front of their home crowd, putting an end to a four game losing streak. “I was pretty proud of our boys,” said Fayetteville
head football coach Kevin Finch, following the week five win. “I think last Friday was a boost for our confidence.” The boost of confidence will hopefully carry the Rockets into week six, as they prepared to host Dayton, Kentucky (2-3). “Dayton is coming off a win, so they are going to be confident. We will have to play well and come out like we did against Notre Dame,” said Finch. Not only were the Rockets backed by an exceptional running game and gutsy blocking by the offensive line to help claim a victory in week five, but they

Coming off back-to-back losses to North Adams and Northwest, the Eastern Lady Warriors are back on the winning track. The Lady Warriors have pulled out victories in their last three matches, cruising to wins over Fairfield, LynchburgClay, and Peebles to up their overall record to 13-5 and their Southern Hills Athletic Conference record to 9-1. With three SHAC matches remaining as of Oct. 1, the Lady Warriors ranked first in SHAC Division I standings ahead of the West Union Lady Dragons, who held an 8-2 league mark. On Oct. 2, the Lady Warriors were scheduled to face the Ripley-Union-LewisHuntington Lady Jays on their home court, followed by an Oct. 7 league match against West Union, which will most likely determine who will end the regular
were also sturdy on defense, giving up just 13 points against the Titans who managed to defeat the Manchester Greyhounds 34-6 in week two on the gridiron. After a scoreless first quarter that ended with carries by Caleb Dowers, Justin Hart, and Tim Crone to put the Rockets on the Notre Dame eight-yard line, it was Crone reaching pay dirt to top off a long drive with 11:54 to go in the second quarter to give the Rockets a 6-0 lead. After the Rocket defense held Notre Dame to fourth down to bring out the punt team, the Rocket offense took over on their own third yard line to start another long drive that led to a touchdown. The drive started with a 12-yard carry by Dowers. Later came a 10-yard carry by Dowers, and a five-yard carry by Chase Jester to move the Rockets to their own 33-yard line. With the help of a block by senior Logan Wilson, Dowers broke free for a 58yard touchdown run with 5:37 to go in the second quarter. Crone then dove in to complete the two-point conversion to lift the Rockets to a 14-0 lead. It was Hayden Phillips scoring the first touchdown for the Titans with 3:27 to go in the second quarter.
The last time the Eastern Warriors and the RipleyUnion-Lewis-Huntington Blue Jays faced this season, it was the Warriors escaping Ripley with an 8-0 victory. On Tuesday, Sept. 30, it was the Warriors hosting the Jays for the rematch, and once again it was the Eastern squad shutting out the Jays, this time by a score of 4-0. The Jays showed much improvement on the defensive end as compared to their previous bout against the Warriors, but still struggled on offense to come away scoreless. Eastern goalkeeper Mick Hundley recorded the shutout. Seniors Nathan Schmitt and Brandon Covert fired for goals in the first half to lift the Warriors to a 2-0 lead. In the second half it was Eastern senior Jacob Handra scoring two goals to cap off a four-point Warrior

the receiving end of two passes for seven yards, while sophomore receiver Eli Crall caught two passes for 17 yards. On the defensive end, sacks came from Western Brown's Michael OtisHensley (1) and Jacob Altman (2), while Josh Young would pull down an interception. Jefferson didn't reach pay dirt until the fourth quarter against the Broncos' junior varsity squad, and the Broncos did not score in the second half. Seeing a great deal of
playing time in the second half, Western Brown freshman Zach Stacy took 10 carries for 58 rushing yards on the night, and freshman quarterback Seth Becker took five carries to total 31 rushing yards. “Everybody that dressed played, and we're coming out of this (game) very healthy. We're halfway through the season, and I'm happy for the guys to be 50,” said Western Brown head coach Evan Dreyer during a post game interview. “It was a great first quarter for our defense coming off last week. That was key for us, and I think
our seniors took a part in making sure we didn't come out flat.” “It's an exciting week here in Bronco country,” said Dreyer. In unofficial football standings, the Broncos ranked third in Division III, Region 10 standings following the win over Jefferson. The Broncos were scheduled to face Harrison (5-0, Division II, Region 6) as two undefeated teams faced off at Western Brown's Kibler Stadium/LaRosa's Field in week six on the gridiron, Oct. 3.
After bringing home three wins in Southern Hills Athletic Conference play just prior to the break for the Brown County Fair, the Fayetteville-Perry Lady Rockets stood at a 5-2 mark in conference play; but a recent loss to the North Adams Lady Green Devils marked their third of the season to drop them to a 53 mark. The Lady Rockets faced tough competition coming off fair break, as they suffered a Sept. 29 loss to Summit Country Day in a non-league match just prior to Tuesday's loss to North Adams. In the recent match against Summit CD, the Lady Rockets suffered a narrow 25-23 loss in set one and a 26-24 loss in set two to fall behind 2-0. The Lady Rockets managed to pull out a 25-22 victory in set three of the match, but it was Summit CD claiming a 25-17 victory in set four to win the match. In the Sept. 30 match against North Adams, it was the Lady Green Devils winning the match in three straight sets by scores of 2510, 25-12, and 25-13. As of Oct. 1, five SHAC matches remained on the Lady Rockets' regular season schedule that included two matches against Fairfield, one against Whiteoak, one against Manchester, and a road game at West Union. The Lady Rockets captured wins over Manchester and Whiteoak earlier in the season, but had yet to face Fairfield and West Union as of Oct. 1.

Tailing closely behind the Lady Broncos were the Amelia Lady Barons at 6-1, and the New Richmond Lady Lions ranked third in league standings with a 4-3 record. To up the pressure on the Lady Broncos, their two final matches of the season are on the road at New Richmond (Oct. 7) and Amelia (Oct. 9). The Lady Broncos were scheduled to face 1-5 Batavia in a road game on Oct. 2 to start their string of three road games to end the regular season. “New Richmond and Amelia are both big matches for us. Both teams will be ready so it's important that we stay focused mentally. We've prepared all summer and fall, so now they just need to go out, relax, and play their game and do what they have done all season,” said Fite. In a match that lasted four sets at Goshen High School on Sept. 25, the Lady Broncos pulled out a win over the home-standing Lady Warriors to bring home their 18th victory of the season and remain perfect on the season. The Lady Broncos pulled out a narrow 29-27 victory in set one, and returned in set two to claim a 25-18 win. Up 2-0 in the match, the Lady Broncos lost the third set 26-28. The Lady Broncos dominated for a 25-10 victory in set four to cap off their night with a match victory. Brook Lindsey and MacKenzie Brooks racked up seven kills each in the win at Goshen. Brooks also served for four aces.

The end of the regular season is drawing near, and local soccer teams are battling it out with hopes of ending the fall season on a good note. On Wednesday, Oct. 1, the Eastern Lady Warriors played host to the RipleyUnion-Lewis-Huntington Lady Jays for a Southern Hills Athletic Conference contest, and the bout would end in a 1-1 tie after gutsy performances by both squads. Eastern's Courtney Belmont scored a goal in the first minute of the game to give the Lady Warriors a 10 lead. That proved to be the only goal for the Lady Warriors against the Ripley defense with Suzanne Dragoo at goalkeeper. The Lady Warriors clung tight to their 1-0 lead, but it was Ripley's Shaunee

In an effort to quickly notify parents, students, and staff of school closings or delays due to inclement weather conditions, GEVS will again utilize the One Call Now system. In order for the One Call Now system to work effectively and efficiently, please be certain that the phone number/s on record with the school are correct. You can select up to two phone numbers (preferably home and cell phone numbers) for use during an emergency or routine notification. The One Call Now system will call all the phone number(s) listed with the message every time a message is sent. If you only want one phone call, only list one telephone number. Households with more than one student will only receive one call. In addition to the One Call Now program, GEVS
will also be notifying parents/students/staff via radio and television stations whenever inclement weather causes unsafe road conditions for the transportation of students to school. The opening of school may be delayed until road conditions improve or school may be closed for the day if severe weather continues. As soon as the decision is made to delay or close school, the information will be given to the following local and Cincinnati radio and television stations for announcement: WLW/TV CH 5, WSTR/TV CH 64, CINCI.COM, WCPO/TV CH 9, WCKY/AM 1530, WKRC/TV CH 12, WLW/AM 700, WXIX/TV CH 19 and WKID/FM 95.9. Whenever possible, delays or closings will be an-
nounced prior to the buses beginning their morning routes. The superintendent, principals, and bus supervisor will be busy contacting staff and request that you not call their homes or the schools for information. Listen for announcements on the radio and television stations listed above even after you receive a call from the One Call Now system. Parents are requested to discuss with their children what arrangements have been made in the event that weather conditions require school to be dismissed early. It is especially important for young children to know what to do if no one is at home when school is dismissed. The One Call Now system and the media notifications will be used to notify parents if school must be dismissed early due to inclement weather.

Fayetteville’s Chase Jester carries for a big gain in the Rockets’ Sept. 26 win over Notre Dame.
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 14 Following the successful kick for the extra point, the Rocket lead was cut to 147. The Rockets would find success in their final drive of the second half, which started at their own 33-yard line. A 26-yard carry by Crone moved the Rockets to the Notre Dame 41-yard line, then it was Crone taking another carry for a 12-yard gain. After a five-yard rush by Dowers, a 12-yard carry by Jester moved the Rockets to the Notre Dame 12-yard line with first down and 10 yards to go.
Then it was Eli Wolfer getting in on the action, rushing for a first down. The drive would end with a one-yard touchdown carry by Wolfer, who followed the blocking of Hart to the end zone. Crone then completed a pass to Logan Wilson for the two-point conversion, and the Rockets would hold a 22-7 lead at halftime. The Rockets managed to outscore the Titans 7-6 in the second half of play to bring home their first victory of the season, moving them to a 1-4 overall record. According to Finch, there were many things done differently by his Rockets in week five as compared to
previous weeks on the gridiron, leading to his team's first victory. “I think it's a lot of things. The tackling was much better. We have a lot of players gaining experience and getting comfortable with where they're playing, and the blocking on offense by our 'O' line was creating holes,” said Finch. “Our defensive line also did a nice job of taking care of their responsibilities.” Following the home game against Dayton, the Rockets are on the road in week seven to face Riverview East Academy, a team that held a 3-2 record after week five.

Creature Feature Chocolate poisoning in dogs Each holiday season, veterinarians witness an increase in accidental chocolate poisoning in dogs. The majority of pet owners do not realize the potential for intoxication that chocolate possesses. Theobromine, caffeine and theophylline are all naturally occurring molecules that are found in several foods, plants, beverages and human and veterinary medications. Based on the number of calls received by The National Animal Poison Control Center and the Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center, one of the most commonly encountered poisonings in pet dogs is theobromine, or chocolate, poisoning. Theobromine comes from the plant Theobroma cocoa and is present in chocolate, cocoa beans, cocoa bean hulls, cola and tea. Milk chocolate is obtained from seeds of theobroma cacao after fermentation and roasting. Milk chocolate has about 44 mg/ounce of theobromine; a 4.5 oz. milk chocolate bar has about 240 mgs. of theobromine. Unsweetened baking chocolate has even more – about 390 to 450 mgs of theobromine per ounce. Relative theobromine content per ounce for various products is: Milk chocolate: 50 - 60 mgs/oz Semi-sweet chocolate: 160 mg/oz Unsweetened baking chocolate: 450 mg/oz Cacao meal: 300 - 900 mg/oz Cacao beans: 300 - 1200 mg/oz Hot chocolate: 13 mg/oz The toxic dosage of theobromine in dogs is between 100 and 150 mgs/kg, or about 2 oz. of milk chocolate for every 2.2 pounds of body weight. However, serious non-fatal poisonings have been reported in
DAN MEAKIN CREATURE FEATURE
dogs after eating much smaller amounts. Deaths due to theobromine have been documented in horses who ate cocoa bean hulls used in bedding and in other livestock fed cocoa waste products. No chocolate poisonings have been reported in cats, which is probably a reflection of their eating habits. The first signs of chocolate poisoning are vomiting and diarrhea, increased urination and nausea. These can progress to cardiac arrhythmias and seizures Treatment includes: • Emesis (vomiting) • Repeated doses of acti-
vated charcoal • Controlling seizing with diazepam • Monitoring/controlling arrhythmias with mertoprolol. • Catheterize the bladder since theobromine can be re-absorbed in the bladder • Supportive care until complete recovery Dogs definitely have a sweet tooth, and the problem with giving a dog milk chocolate as a treat is that it develops a liking for chocolate. Dog-proof for home to keep your dog safe. Milk chocolate should never be given to your pet and it should be kept well out of reach. Unsweetened baking chocolate should be kept in closed containers in upper, latched cupboards. Dr. Dan Meakin is the owner of All Creatures Animal Hospital, 1894 Ohio Pike in Amelia. History and Architecture Remembered Magnificent 1893 building was constructed of 6 courses of brick, fir floors and spectacular stained glass, by the Order of the Odd Fellows to house their fellowship hall. Thousands upon thousands of square feet in this sprawling 2 and 3 story complex that has hosted multiple stores, the K of C, and a mortuary. It was maintained in later years as a full line furniture store until it was closed some years ago. It has been many things and benefited so many people and organizations over the years and is truly a symbol of the times of workmanship and craftsmanship. And now it needs our help, to be rescued from demise. As with any building that has set a couple of years without attention the signs of disrepair are starting to show but someone with the imagination of use, and the heart of a preservationist could bring this monument of the past back to her prime. Let us show you the wonderful attributes, ride the working, still licensed 1918 hand pulled freight elevator to the third floor where the rug display rack are that were moved the after the trend of carpet became a standard. Come visit the village where Uncle Tom’s Cabin was set and where a half generation after the Civil War a group of inspired citizens constructed this one of a kind building. Priced at $119,000..... The local family that has owned it for over a century says to present an offer. YOUR OWN WINE CELLAR, A PIECE OF HISTORY, AND A RIVER VIEW Next to the Rankin House, this home can be purchased with 4 or 7 plus acres- $29,000 or $42,000
