The Georgetown Lady G-Men are set to tip off their basketball season on Nov. 26 against the Blanchester Wildcats at home. When head coach Bernie Cropper was asked what his hopes and goals were for the season, Cropper said, “One of the teams’ goals is to win the SBC-National league again, we have won it 13 straight years, our goal is to win National Division again.” Coach Cropper also hopes to improve from last year by, “Improving all year as a team and do well in the tournament, we want to keep pushing toward the tournament, and to keep improving. We want to play our
best basketball in February and tournament time.” The Lady GMen have won four straight Southwest Division III Sectionals, and hope to add another one to that this season. Cropper said, “We have a lot of experience back, four starters, three senior girls, Megan Hatfield, Becca Whitaker and Kenzi Carrington with junior, Morgan Gast starter. junior Kayla Seigla played at Eastern Brown last year, but came back to play with the Lady G-Men; with the four starters plus Kayla, we have a lot of key contributors, our strength is the depth.” When asked what he feels the teams’ strengths are, Cropper said, “The return of four starters, plus experience, we are deep in experience. That will be our
strength for this season.” Cropper said he wants to see the team improve on rebounding during the 2013-2014 season, and would like to see more second shots on offense. The Lady G-Men also hope to incorporate multiple defensive strategies including the full court press. Cropper added, “We have talented offensive players, who can shoot, handle and pass. The key to the season will be defense and rebounding, we are not a big [tall] team but will need to rebound and do a great job defensively.” The Lady G-Men finished their 2012 season with a record of 21-3.

The G-Men have moved back down to Division IV and head coach Jerry Underwood has a feeling his team can make a run at the state title again, like they did back in 2007.
Being moved back down to Division IV is bringing back memories for the Georgetown faithful. In 2007, the G-Men won the state Division IV title, and now head coach Jerry Underwood is hoping his team can make another run at it. “Once you win it, that’s always the expectation,” Underwood said. “I would rather have it that way than any other though. Our kids know that since it happened before it can happen again. Its something they have their sights set on.” But the G-Men have 22 games to get through before thinking about the postseason. Georgetown’s first game of the 2013-2014 season is on Dec. 6 against Blanchester at home. Last year the G-Men finished 20-3, and 10-1 in the Southern

Buckeye Conference National Division. They were able to make it to the first round of the playoffs but were beaten by Purcell Marian 62-61. “Expectation wise, we should be about the same as last year. Our non-league schedule is tougher this year but I did that for the kids,” Underwood said. According to Underwood, the toughest stretch for his team will be Bishop Brossart (KY) on Dec. 7, Batavia twice throughout the season and Eastern Brown. “We lost four seniors off of last year’s team,” Underwood said. “We are returning most of our talent base though. It is hard to replace seniors but ultimately we have our top scorers back.” One of those top scorers is junior Gage Bradley who missed last season with an ACL tear, and he will be helping the G-Men out “a lot.” Another notable return is senior Bruce Williams who is a four year starter. “I hope (Bruce) plays with a little more sense of urgency. With this being his last year he takes on a little bit more of a leadership role,” Underwood said. “His experience will certainly help us in big games. Underwood stressed that experience shouldn’t be a problem for the G-Men. Along with Williams, there are three players who have been three year starters. In the SBC-National league goes, anything could happen. “Batavia is probably going to be up and coming, but Amelia by far will be the big ticket team,” Underwood said. Underwood said he hopes his players can become mentally tough, stay healthy and improve each game. “Our kids have always played hard, its just getting them to keep that going from the beginning of the game to the end,” Underwood said. “Sometimes they play to a point where they can’t finish strong.” But Underwood is hopeful for the upcoming season. “Its exciting to always have hopes of a good year and the team is going to do well,” he said.

New coach looks to improve young Lady Warriors team BY Sabrina Mignerey The Brown County Press The Eastern Brown Lady Warriors are preparing for their season on Nov. 23 at Paint Valley High School with a new coach. The Lady Warriors varsity basketball team leader is now Elaine Douglas. Douglas formerly coached at St. Patrick High School (KY). Douglas accepted the Eastern coaching job in May of 2013. The Lady Saints went 78-59 during Douglas' five seasons as head coach from 2007 to 2012. The Lady Saints won the 10th Region All "A" Classic in 2011 and the 39th District tournament in 2009, when they went 20-6. She resigned following the 20112012 season and served as an assistant coach at Rowan County (KY) this past season. Douglas is the second straight Eastern girls' coach to have a connection to St. Patrick. John Burrows, who retired in March after his 41st year of coaching in various capacities at Eastern, including three seasons as the
Lady Warriors' bench boss, is a St. Patrick alumnus. Eastern went 4229 during his tenure. Douglas is getting her Lady Warriors used to her style of coaching and is looking forward to the 2013-2014 season. When asked, “How are you feeling about the beginning of your season?” Douglas said, “The girls are trying to get to know my style of coaching, they are young and very receptive, and they have worked very hard. I feel good about the season.” Douglas also said that her hopes and goals for the season are to let the Lady Warriors continue to learn and to improve each game. With this being Douglas’s first season with the Warriors, she wants to help her team improve by setting their own pace, and trying to improve with what she sees game after game. When asked if the Lady Warriors possess certain key players, Douglas said, “Every girl I have will be a key player, simply because due to injury I am already down to 15-16 players, all are key. Senior Maddi Barnstein will be
key inside and will do a lot of rebounding, and Amy Boudreu, also a senior with height will be key this year, hoping that she can give us a lot off the bench. Every player is key, due to injury.” The Lady Warriors go into the 2013-2014 season freshman and sophomore heavy, with a couple of seniors and three juniors. The youth is the heavy side of the Lady Warriors program. When asked what she feels the teams strengths are going into the season, Douglas said, “Our strength right now is that they are very gritty, they work very hard. They are very diligent in coming to practice and are eager to learn, that will be a strength for us.” Douglas also said that her whole strategy is new to the Lady Warriors, and feels it will be a learning and rebuilding year for the team. “Everything I do is different than the previous coach”, Douglas said.

Transition year for young Broncos BY Brandon Barb The Brown County Press After an average season last year, the Western Brown Broncos are hoping to turn things around and do better than their 11-12 overall record from a year ago. “All the seniors we lost played a big role,” Western Brown Head Coach Greg Foster said. “This year we will have a lot of guys who are inexperienced but they know what to expect. It will definitely be a test this year.” The Broncos’ schedule is tougher this time around with teams like Mason Co., KY, and Anderson added. “I want to play these tougher teams,” Foster said. “It will help us in the long run come tournament time. It exposes the kids to how these bigger schools play at a higher level, but I’m excited for the challenges we have.” Last year the Broncos were in
Division I and lost to Moeller in the first round of the sectional 6921. The Broncos have been moved down to Division II this year and Foster is excited about the possibilities. “With the move, playing those tougher teams will help us,” he said. “It gives us a little more confidence going into the tournament.” The team is excited about the move down, according to Foster. “Its not just the league you want to win, we want to move on and win tournament games. They realize what they have to do,” he said. In the league, Foster believes they will be able to “hold their own.” “Its kind of up in the air as far as who will be the top dog, but I think we have a good shot at winning the league.” But it is a bit of a rebuilding year for the Broncos. With only
three seniors, the rest of the roster is made up of juniors and sophomores. “We’re trying to get these younger guys brought up to speed. They have caught on quickly and know what’s expected of them,” Foster said. “I think they will put forth the effort.” While the young players are learning the Bronco system, the team is trying to correct their problems from last year. The biggest problems being a struggling offense and taking care of the ball. “Last year we struggled at the point position and now we have a few guys who can run it well and hopefully we get better results than we did before,” Foster said. Foster continued, “The guys understand the problems we had and they are working hard to improve those things this season. They know what they have to do to make this season better.”

Western Brown Lady Broncos hope to make it into playoffs again BY Sabrina Mignerey The Brown County Press
O D D P A G E S
The Western Brown Lady Broncos Varsity basketball team is set to begin their season on the road Nov. 22 at Clinton Massie High School. Lady Broncos head coach Kyle Fender is looking forward to the 2013-2014 season. Fender said he hopes his team is going “to be the hardest working team on the court, and to be the most improved team from day one to the end of the season.” When asked how he would like to improve upon last year’s season, Fender said, “We have an improved speed of play this year. We trust our depth and want our girls to play as hard as they can, for as long as they can.” The Lady Broncos finished with an overall record of 20-50 in 2012 and advanced to the third game in the playoffs, losing closely to Norwood with a score of 60-59. The Lady Broncos lost several players from graduation. “We graduated 5 great young ladies from last year’s team. In
addition to replacing their on court production, we will look to replace their leadership,” Fender said. The team is pretty evenly distributed when it comes to class; the Lady Broncos have two seniors, five juniors and three sophomores on the team to start the season. When asked about key players for this season, Fender said, “We are excited about how even our roster is. Anyone could be our best player on any given day.” The Lady Broncos have worked hard on their transition game, as well as the team defense. Fender said, “Our team strengths include: teamwork, depth, and conditioning. We want to focus on two primary objectives; play great defense and have great shot selection throughout the game.” When asked about the post season, Fender said, “I try not to look ahead, we have 22 challenges in the regular season to get through first. Our focus is on game one.”

Warriors hoping to replace Lawson, win league and get back to districts BY Brandon Barb The Brown County Press
The Eastern Brown Warriors have been improving each basketball season in recent years. In 2012 they made it to regionals, and last year they made it to districts. However, this season might be different for the Warriors as they will be trying to fill spots left by graduated seniors. “It will be an interesting year,” Eastern Head Coach Rob Beucler said. “It will be one of those where we will see where the pieces fall. We just don’t have that one big presence in the post.” The Warriors will have to replace Chase Lawson, who led the team in scoring, assists and was second in rebounding according to Beucler. “He did a lot of things for us. He took on several leadership roles for the team and we have to try and fill them,” Beucler said. “We will lose some scoring but we will make up for it with defense.” Last year the Warriors went 22-3, made it to the district finals but lost to Oak Hill 5735. Can they continue their success this year is the question. “We will see as it goes,” Beucler said. “We are going to be playing a lot of good teams, so it will be a very competitive schedule. The league is going to be pretty good too. Its going to depend on how we put things together, and how we play as a team for us to be successful.” To try and fill the empty spots, Beucler has a group of seniors; Nathan Scott, Riley Prine, John Stivers, Layne Pickerill and Curtis Burns. As well as “a nice sophomore crew this year.” “We aren’t very tall though, 6’3” is probably the tallest we

have,” Beucler said. “How well we do will depend on what we can do defensively. Its one of our keys, because there are some days you just can’t shoot.” Last year the Warriors only gave up about 44 points a game, according to Beucler. Along with stressing defense, Beucler is focusing on the fundamentals because “if you can’t do those you will be in trouble”. “If the kids can be consistent the season will go well,” Beucler said. “We believe in the fundamentals and if we can get those down we should win some games.” The Warriors are hoping to be competitive again this year despite losing Lawson and having to move players around. “It isn’t going to be about one or two guys. We will have some depth, and if they can fit into the system a lot of these kids are going to be able to contribute. They’ve had a good fall offseason, and hopefully that will help out in the long run.” Beucler continued, “We’re always competitive, and our goal is to be successful and win the league, and get back to districts. We strive to get back there.”

Lady Rockets hoping to make it back to Sweet Sixteen, go further BY Brandon Barb The Brown County Press
Heading into the 2013-2014 season, the Fayetteville Lady Rockets are considered the favorite to win the Southern Hills Athletic Conference, Division II, title again. And with all but one returning player from last year’s team, they just might do that. “We have pretty high expectations,” Fayetteville Head Coach Toby Sheets said. “We know its up to us if we get back there, but we expect to do well.” Last year the Lady Rockets went 24-2 and made it to the Sweet Sixteen within the Division III tournament but lost to Middletown Madison 67-58. “We loaded up the schedule, so I don’t know if we will go 242 again,” Sheets said. “We should be alright though.” Some of the teams on the schedule are Greenview, who the Rockets have beaten the last couple of years in the sectional tournament. Hillsboro will be a “good challenge.” A new team for Fayetteville is Madeira, who won their sectional last year and made it to the district tournament. And according to Sheets, Peebles will be a good challenge because they are “probably the most talented team, other than
us in the conference.” Fayetteville will also host the Brown County Holiday Tournament this year, which the Rockets have only won once, back in 1996. “It will be awesome if we can pull that off again,” Sheets said. The Lady Rockets went undefeated in the league last year, and Sheets hopes to do the same during this season. “We’re planning on winning the league this year,” he said. “We were lucky enough to go undefeated last year and we got the gold ball. I think we should be the favorite to win it again.” He continued, “You’re always lucky enough to be considered the favorite going in. There is a target there because any of those teams can beat you.” But the Rockets can’t do that if they don’t stay healthy. A few girls have already been banged up a bit before the start of the season. Junior center Lincoln Smyth had patella tendon surgery over the summer, and while trying to strengthen the tendon her knee cap was dislocated. She hasn’t been able to practice in any game type situations yet. Also, junior forward Carly Burroughs suffered a concussion during the scrimmage against Clinton Massie, but she will be ready to go before the
start of regular season games. “Staying healthy is going to dictate how far we go,” Sheets said. “We’re going to rotate eight players, and if we can get that going we will be fine.” There is a lot of excitement heading into the season for the Lady Rockets. Not only are they the favorites to win the league again, but they have two players who have verbally agreed to play at the college level. Senior Megan Eyre to Ohio Dominican University and senior Makayla Rosselot to Ursuline College, both Division II schools. “We’re fortunate as a Division IV school to have two players go on to play at the college level,” Sheets. With the regular season approaching fast, Sheets is comfortable with where the team is positioned. “I’m going to keep challenging myself to challenge them, and not let them get relaxed but they want to do the best they can so that shouldn’t be a problem,” he said. “Wait until you see this team play. They are outstanding.”

Lady Jays 2013-2014 Schedule
Young Lady Jays using new offense to break even on the 2013-2014 season BY Brandon Barb The Brown County Press
O D D P A G E S
Coming off of a 15-8 regular season -- and 11-2 in the league -- last year, the Ripley Lady Jays hope to match that record or do even better during the upcoming season. But after losing many key players, that goal may be a challenge. “We’ve got a shot at going .500. We lost five starting seniors from last year, so everyone I put on the floor is a change,” Ripley Head Coach Kent Caudill said. “But the girls have adapted very well.” The team has one returning starter, and a lot of girls moving up from the junior varsity team. The Lady Blue Jays have seven freshmen and sophomores on varsity this year. “They are coming together in the scrimmages we’ve had but they have been trying to turn things on in the second half instead of the first,” Caudill said. “We need to
come out of the gate like we do in the second half.” Even though Caudill thinks the Fayetteville Lady Rockets will be the team to beat in the Southern Hills Athletic Conference, Division II, he feels his team will be able to hold their own throughout the year. “Our biggest challenge is going to be our height disadvantage. We are a very small team and the majority of teams we meet will have girls twice our size so we are going to have to be quick and get up and down the floor,” Caudill said. The Lady Blue Jays are also learning a new offense, so that could also slow them down early on. Their first game is against Bethel-Tate on the road on Nov. 30.

better than the team from last year,” Iles said.”We are going to be stronger, more physical and we might be a little quicker than we were. Things are looking good for us early on.” The Rockets are losing five seniors but the returning players all have varsity experience. Returning senior D.J. Iles has led the Rockets in assists, steals and scoring for the last few years, and he is only 13 points away from the school record for scoring. “I can see him [D.J.] being a leader as the captain,” Iles said. “Hopefully he can do the same things he has been this season, but there are going to be a lot of guys who can score and help us.” With the hopes of being better than last year, Iles believes it will be his team and Fairfield as the two teams fighting for the Southern Hills Athletic Conference title. “I would like to say we are going to win it, but it will come down between us and Fairfield so we will see how it goes,” he said. Last year the Rockets were 8-5 in league play, while Fairfield was 7-6. The Rockets did beat the Lions twice last year. The game plan for the Rockets is staying the same, more or less, but the team has been working on its defense and rebounding during the offseason. “We like to get the ball up and down the floor, and play fast paced ball. If the kids can buy into playing a stronger defense and get more rebounds we will win those close games we lost last year,” Iles said. Iles’s team averaged about 69 points a game, which according to him is plenty to win but the defense was lacking in some areas. “The kids are coming along

with that though,” he said. The Rockets’ schedule is going to be tough, but there isn’t any team that “scares” Iles. He said they can compete with all of them. “Oyler is new to our schedule this year, but we ended up beating them in the semi-finals by four last year so that will be a good match-up,” Iles said. “And Fairfield is picked to win the small school division, so that will be another really good game too.” Two years ago the Rockets won their sectional tournament, and last year they were beaten by Seven Hills 66-62 in the semi-finals but the postseason is a little too far off for Iles to be thinking about. “We should have gone back to Dayton last year,” Iles said. “It was disappointing for sure, but this team has the potential to be better than last year’s. If everything comes together I would like to say we could make a run at it again.” The Rockets tip off their season against Blanchester at home on Dec. 3.
