Holiday Hints: Tree lighting tips Lighting a Christmas tree may seem like child's play, but time and again people struggle with the task. Untangling wires and wrapping them around boughs can be nerve wracking, but lighting a tree doesn't have to be a chore when you follow some tips from the professionals. First, keep in mind that wrapping lights around the tree horizontally is more work and often doesn't produce a multi-dimensional effect. Rather, string the lights from the trunk up to the top, working vertically. This is actually how the tree decorators at Rockefeller Center in New York City do the famous tree year after year. This method helps eliminate tangled wires and empty spots. Remember to plug in the strands of lights before you begin to check for burnt-out bulbs and to adjust the spacing of lights to prevent dark spots. Think about varying light bulb sizes to add more dimension. String an inner layer of small LED white lights to produce an inner glow on the tree before adding larger, colored lightson top to increase visual appeal. Just be sure to match the same wattage of the lights so that you do not have power surges and can prolong the life of the bulbs.

Try purchasing clear, glass ornaments, then remove the top of the ornament, which is usually spring-loaded, before slipping a photo inside and replacing the top. You also can laminate a photo, punch a hole in the top and affix a ribbon. Ceramic ornaments - The popularity of paint-it-yourself pottery has led to an increase in ceramic and crafts shops across the country. During the holiday season such shops offer many holiday items that can be painted. Often the store will then fire the pieces after they are painted so that they are shiny and hardened for display. Those who want to do their painting at home can visit their local craft or hobby shop, where typically there are unfinished ceramic ornaments that can be painted with acrylic paints found right in the next aisle. A finishing coat of clear glaze will help protect the ornaments from year to year.
Wood crafts - Many of today's craft centers have expanded to include sections devoted to unfinished wood items. Everything from letters to animal cutouts to boxes and rocking horses can be purchased and finished. Turn keepsake boxes into painted and ribbon-adorned gift boxes. Stain a treasure chest that can be used to store reindeer snacks for Santa's crew. Turn small decorative pieces into ornaments for the tree. Paint and affix wood initials onto stocking holders to identify to whom each stocking belongs. Crafty individuals also can turn plain wood plaques into signs with clever sayings, such as "Park your sleigh here." Scavenge around the house - Young children can use any medium for making ornaments. Garlands made of macaroni or popcorn are traditional. Fabric scraps can be sewn and stuffed with potpourri for homemade scent satchels. Hand-drawn pictures can be made and laminated and hung on the tree.

Make a local senior citizen’s holiday special Clermont Senior Services is busy working on the Adopt-a-Senior holiday project. Each year they receive calls from individuals and organizations that want to help out the elderly during the holidays by providing them with a gift or two. This project has grown enormously in the last few years. Already, there are about 470 seniors on the wish list! About 170 of those have been adopted, so many more donors are needed. The wish lists usually consist of practical items as well as a small luxury or two, such as a box of candy or a crossword puzzle book. Gifts are delivered by staff in order to protect the confidentiality of the seniors. For some seniors, these few gifts are the only ones they receive. Some of them are overwhelmed by the generos-

ity of volunteers. Some laugh and some cry, but they all have big smiles on their faces, and a warm spot in their hearts from knowing that someone cared. There is also a need for personal care items such as shampoo, body lotion, razors and shaving cream. Towels and sheets are needed too. Sometimes a senior has only one bath towel, and their sheets may be torn and stained. Bed and bath linens are too costly for them to replace, so the one or two they own may have to last for years. Cleaning supplies are always needed too. One lady was washing her dishes with shampoo, because that was all she had. These items can be donated to the holiday gift pantry without adopting a specific person. Collecting these items can be a great group project. Only new items are accepted. * Ask when the tree was cut down. Precut trees may be cut down weeks before they're sold. This doesn't mean the tree won't make it through the holiday season, but a tree that was cut several weeks ago should have some of its bottom trunk removed before it's placed in the stand. This will make it easier for the tree to consume water. This step likely isn't necessary if the tree was cut down the same day you bring it home. * Have the tree shaken before taking it home. A shaker removes any debris or dead needles from the tree, which can save you the trouble of cleaning up all of those dead needles from your living room floor later on.
* Choose the right location. When looking for the right place to set up your natural tree, it's best to choose a spot that's cool and free of drafts. The tree should not be placed near heat sources, including appliances, fireplaces or vents, because such heat sources create a safety hazard and can make it difficult for the tree to retain moisture. There should also be ample space between the top of the tree and the ceiling. * Place some covering on the ground beneath the tree. Even a freshly cut natural tree will shed needles over the course of the holiday season. Before placing the stand in the location you've chosen, put some type of covering, such as a tree bag, beneath
the stand so it's easier to gather all those needles once the holiday season has ended. * Remember that natural trees are thirsty. Those who have never had a natural Christmas tree in the past might be surprised at just how thirsty natural trees get. The stand's reservoir should have lots of water, which should never dip below the stump. If the water dips below the stump, you might be forced to cut a little more off the bottom of the trunk to ensure the tree will make it through the holiday season. Be sure to check the water in the reservoir at least once per day to maintain adequate water levels.

Christmas tree sap clean-up Having a live tree inside the home can be aweinspiring, but it can also be quite messy. The idea of bringing a for-
merly live tree inside a home as a decoration may seem odd, especially when individuals are faced with the aftermath, which is
often a trail of pine needles and very sticky sap. A freshly cut pine tree will ooze sap, which tends to be quite sticky and messy and notoriously difficult to remove. Even a Christmas tree that is average in stature can generate a fair amount of sap, and it takes just a few drops of sap to make a mess. If sap has you stuck for clean-up ideas, consider these home remedies. On clothing: * Use rubbing alcohol on the sap stain. Allow the alcohol to sit on the stain for 30 minutes and then wash as usual. * Make a paste of laundry detergent and water and apply it to the stain.
Mistletoe has a deep history * Ammonia also may remove a sap stain. Just test an inconspicuous part of the clothing to determine if applying ammonia changes its color. On carpeting: * Freeze the sap with ice cubes and then carefully pick out the hardened pieces. * Rubbing alcohol also may be able to break up sap in carpet fibers. On hands: * Any greasy, oil-based product can work, such as olive oil or even vegetable shortening. Rub on the skin, and the sap should come right off. * A lubricant like WD-40 has also been known to remove sap.
* Hand sanitizer, which is comprised mainly of alcohol, can help dissolve sap so it can be rinsed off. * Make a paste of mineral oil (baby oil) and baking soda. This should help dissolve the sap and make your hands soft in the process. In hair: * Sap can be notoriously difficult to get out of human hair or animal fur. Try coating the sap in natural peanut butter or mayonnaise, both of which have a high oil content. Allow to sit for a while and then comb out the sap with a finetoothed comb. * If tree sap cannot be removed, cutting it out may be the only option.

Chances are, holiday revelers will find themselves underneath the mistletoe at least once this holiday season. While they might know what to do when that time comes, they might not know the history of that plant above their heads. Especially sacred to Celtic Druids, mistletoe was believed bestow life and fertility, while also protecting against poison and serving as an aphrodisiac. Mistletoe would later take on a more political meaning, as the ritual of cutting the mistletoe came symbolized the emasculation of the old King by his
successor. Nowadays, mistletoe is typically hung in doorways or entryways from one room to another. This tradition can also trace itself back several centuries to the Middle Ages. During the Middle Ages, branches of mistletoe were hung from ceilings to ward off evil spirits. Throughout Europe, mistletoe was placed over doorways in the house as well as the stables as a means to preventing the entrance of witches. The tradition of kissing underneath the mistletoe likely stems from the belief that mistletoe bestows fertility and is often associat-
ed with the Roman festival of Saturnalia, a period of merrymaking that predated Christmas. In 18th century England, a young lady standing underneath the mistletoe could not refuse to be kissed. Once kissed, the kiss would signify deep romance or eternal friendship. History also suggests that mistletoe was a symbol of peace. In Scandinavia, mistletoe was considered a plant of peace. When standing underneath the mistletoe, enemies could declare a truce and spouses could end any marital turmoil with a kiss.

Christmas tradition: Lighting the Christmas Tree Many Christmas traditions are older than some celebrants might think. The tradition of lighting up a Christmas tree, for example, dates back to the days before Christmas lights. Before electric-powered twinkle lights were invented and even before electricity was discovered, people used actual candles to adorn the Christmas tree. As one can imagine, having an open flame next to a dried-out tree was risky, so it was customary to keep a bucket of water next to the tree in the case of fire. Christmas tradition: Lighting the Christmas Tree Many Christmas traditions are older than some celebrants might think. The tradition of lighting up a Christmas tree, for example, dates back to the days before Christmas lights. Before electric-powered twinkle lights were invented and even before electricity was discovered, people used actual candles to adorn the Christmas tree. As one can imagine, having an open flame next to a dried-out tree was risky, so it was customary to keep a bucket of water next to the tree in the case of fire. Christmas tree sap clean-up Having a live tree inside the home can be aweinspiring, but it can also be quite messy. The idea of bringing a for-
merly live tree inside a home as a decoration may seem odd, especially when individuals are faced with the aftermath, which is
often a trail of pine needles and very sticky sap. A freshly cut pine tree will ooze sap, which tends to be quite sticky and messy and notoriously difficult to remove. Even a Christmas tree that is average in stature can generate a fair amount of sap, and it takes just a few drops of sap to make a mess. If sap has you stuck for clean-up ideas, consider these home remedies. On clothing: * Use rubbing alcohol on the sap stain. Allow the alcohol to sit on the stain for 30 minutes and then wash as usual. * Make a paste of laundry detergent and water and apply it to the stain.
Mistletoe has a deep history * Ammonia also may remove a sap stain. Just test an inconspicuous part of the clothing to determine if applying ammonia changes its color. On carpeting: * Freeze the sap with ice cubes and then carefully pick out the hardened pieces. * Rubbing alcohol also may be able to break up sap in carpet fibers. On hands: * Any greasy, oil-based product can work, such as olive oil or even vegetable shortening. Rub on the skin, and the sap should come right off. * A lubricant like WD-40 has also been known to remove sap.
* Hand sanitizer, which is comprised mainly of alcohol, can help dissolve sap so it can be rinsed off. * Make a paste of mineral oil (baby oil) and baking soda. This should help dissolve the sap and make your hands soft in the process. In hair: * Sap can be notoriously difficult to get out of human hair or animal fur. Try coating the sap in natural peanut butter or mayonnaise, both of which have a high oil content. Allow to sit for a while and then comb out the sap with a finetoothed comb. * If tree sap cannot be removed, cutting it out may be the only option.

Chances are, holiday revelers will find themselves underneath the mistletoe at least once this holiday season. While they might know what to do when that time comes, they might not know the history of that plant above their heads. Especially sacred to Celtic Druids, mistletoe was believed bestow life and fertility, while also protecting against poison and serving as an aphrodisiac. Mistletoe would later take on a more political meaning, as the ritual of cutting the mistletoe came symbolized the emasculation of the old King by his
successor. Nowadays, mistletoe is typically hung in doorways or entryways from one room to another. This tradition can also trace itself back several centuries to the Middle Ages. During the Middle Ages, branches of mistletoe were hung from ceilings to ward off evil spirits. Throughout Europe, mistletoe was placed over doorways in the house as well as the stables as a means to preventing the entrance of witches. The tradition of kissing underneath the mistletoe likely stems from the belief that mistletoe bestows fertility and is often associat-
ed with the Roman festival of Saturnalia, a period of merrymaking that predated Christmas. In 18th century England, a young lady standing underneath the mistletoe could not refuse to be kissed. Once kissed, the kiss would signify deep romance or eternal friendship. History also suggests that mistletoe was a symbol of peace. In Scandinavia, mistletoe was considered a plant of peace. When standing underneath the mistletoe, enemies could declare a truce and spouses could end any marital turmoil with a kiss.

* Ask when the tree was cut down. Precut trees may be cut down weeks before they're sold. This doesn't mean the tree won't make it through the holiday season, but a tree that was cut several weeks ago should have some of its bottom trunk removed before it's placed in the stand. This will make it easier for the tree to consume water. This step likely isn't necessary if the tree was cut down the same day you bring it home. * Have the tree shaken before taking it home. A shaker removes any debris or dead needles from the tree, which can save you the trouble of cleaning up all of those dead needles from your living room floor later on.
* Choose the right location. When looking for the right place to set up your natural tree, it's best to choose a spot that's cool and free of drafts. The tree should not be placed near heat sources, including appliances, fireplaces or vents, because such heat sources create a safety hazard and can make it difficult for the tree to retain moisture. There should also be ample space between the top of the tree and the ceiling. * Place some covering on the ground beneath the tree. Even a freshly cut natural tree will shed needles over the course of the holiday season. Before placing the stand in the location you've chosen, put some type of covering, such as a tree bag, beneath
the stand so it's easier to gather all those needles once the holiday season has ended. * Remember that natural trees are thirsty. Those who have never had a natural Christmas tree in the past might be surprised at just how thirsty natural trees get. The stand's reservoir should have lots of water, which should never dip below the stump. If the water dips below the stump, you might be forced to cut a little more off the bottom of the trunk to ensure the tree will make it through the holiday season. Be sure to check the water in the reservoir at least once per day to maintain adequate water levels.

Make a local senior citizen’s holiday special Clermont Senior Services is busy working on the Adopt-a-Senior holiday project. Each year they receive calls from individuals and organizations that want to help out the elderly during the holidays by providing them with a gift or two. This project has grown enormously in the last few years. Already, there are about 470 seniors on the wish list! About 170 of those have been adopted, so many more donors are needed. The wish lists usually consist of practical items as well as a small luxury or two, such as a box of candy or a crossword puzzle book. Gifts are delivered by staff in order to protect the confidentiality of the seniors. For some seniors, these few gifts are the only ones they receive. Some of them are overwhelmed by the generos-

Try purchasing clear, glass ornaments, then remove the top of the ornament, which is usually spring-loaded, before slipping a photo inside and replacing the top. You also can laminate a photo, punch a hole in the top and affix a ribbon. Ceramic ornaments - The popularity of paint-it-yourself pottery has led to an increase in ceramic and crafts shops across the country. During the holiday season such shops offer many holiday items that can be painted. Often the store will then fire the pieces after they are painted so that they are shiny and hardened for display. Those who want to do their painting at home can visit their local craft or hobby shop, where typically there are unfinished ceramic ornaments that can be painted with acrylic paints found right in the next aisle. A finishing coat of clear glaze will help protect the ornaments from year to year.
Wood crafts - Many of today's craft centers have expanded to include sections devoted to unfinished wood items. Everything from letters to animal cutouts to boxes and rocking horses can be purchased and finished. Turn keepsake boxes into painted and ribbon-adorned gift boxes. Stain a treasure chest that can be used to store reindeer snacks for Santa's crew. Turn small decorative pieces into ornaments for the tree. Paint and affix wood initials onto stocking holders to identify to whom each stocking belongs. Crafty individuals also can turn plain wood plaques into signs with clever sayings, such as "Park your sleigh here." Scavenge around the house - Young children can use any medium for making ornaments. Garlands made of macaroni or popcorn are traditional. Fabric scraps can be sewn and stuffed with potpourri for homemade scent satchels. Hand-drawn pictures can be made and laminated and hung on the tree.

Holiday Hints: Tree lighting tips Lighting a Christmas tree may seem like child's play, but time and again people struggle with the task. Untangling wires and wrapping them around boughs can be nerve wracking, but lighting a tree doesn't have to be a chore when you follow some tips from the professionals. First, keep in mind that wrapping lights around the tree horizontally is more work and often doesn't produce a multi-dimensional effect. Rather, string the lights from the trunk up to the top, working vertically. This is actually how the tree decorators at Rockefeller Center in New York City do the famous tree year after year. This method helps eliminate tangled wires and empty spots. Remember to plug in the strands of lights before you begin to check for burnt-out bulbs and to adjust the spacing of lights to prevent dark spots. Think about varying light bulb sizes to add more dimension. String an inner layer of small LED white lights to produce an inner glow on the tree before adding larger, colored lightson top to increase visual appeal. Just be sure to match the same wattage of the lights so that you do not have power surges and can prolong the life of the bulbs.
