Piece of history for sale in Ripley

There is a treasure trove of American history along the Ohio River snaking through the hills past Clermont and Brown County and leaving beautiful and interesting markers of another time. The river was the major route west to the frontier that enabled our young nation to expand beyond its eastern coast and misty mountains. Early pioneers were led down it by Simon Kenton, followed by families, some stopping along the way and most moving on. Remaining today are the rivertown monuments of those who stopped. We walk and drive past them every day in the U.S. 52 communities of New Richmond, Point Pleasant, Moscow, Neville, Chilo, Utopia, Higginsport, Ripley and Aderdeen One such place is the grand, pillared home of Silver Point at 402 Main Street in Ripley. It was built in 1841 by Samuel Hemphill who entertained both President Ulysses S. Grant and President Rutherford B. Hayes there. Mr. Hemphill reportedly was one of the wealthiest persons along the river between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. According to lore, during a State of Ohio financial crisis Mr. Hemphill loaned the state enough to keep it afloat.
Ripley itself was exceptionally prosperous because of the depth of the Ohio River channel at its edge, allowing packet boats to moor comfortably to its shore. Therefore, shipping was easy. Ripley became a major port. Its people were inventive and industrious. Its nearby farms were fertile and productive. The population grew to 5,000. Mr. Hemphill became the largest food and commodities broker in Ripley. His trade included lumber, tobacco, hogs, whisky and items manufactured in Ripley, such as the grand piano that still sits in Silver Point today. Mr. Hemphill's workers named the home Silver Point because he always paid them in silver. Mr. Hemphill was the treasurer of the Ripley Presbyterian Church, out of which developed the leadership and strong following of the Ripley abolitionist movement. Southern slave owners soon referred to Ripley as "that abolitionist hell-hole." Many Ripley residents led by the Rev. John Rankin and former slave John P. Parker helped hundreds of slaves to freedom. According to legend, the very title of Underground Railroad was coined by slave hunters after losing track of fleeing slaves they were chasing through the dark al-

leys of Ripley. The monument today at Ripley's Front and Main Streets honors Ripley abolitionists. Mr. Hemphill played a funding role in the abolitionist cause. One of the stories told by local abolitionists back then was of a slave mother, Elliza, who crossed the Ohio River on the ice at Ripley with her child in her arms. Harriet Beecher Stowe learned of the incident during one of her frequent trips to Ripley to collect material about abolitionists activities for her book, Uncle Tom's Cabin. There is a plaque along Ripley's Front Street where Eliza with her child is believed to have come ashore. The nation and the world riveted upon Eliza's story.
The original Silver Point was one story high. The second story was added later in the 1800s. Silver Point is the first of the large, vintage homes that comprise Colonial Row, which for years has been a favorite of magazine photographers. The smaller house sitting next to Silver Point, now its guest house, was the old Ripley Telephone Company built on Silver Point property after the Great Flood of 1937 drove it to safer, higher ground. Ripley is rich in these monuments, as are the other U.S. 52 communities. It just takes a stop, good look and then a desire to dig into its history to enjoy the interesting revelations.
