Academy and Tony Award Winner Marcia Gay Harden joins West Union Walk to End Alzheimer’s Those who attended the Adams, Brown, Highland (ABH) Counties Walk to End Alzheimer’s in August met a renowned star of stage and screen when they arrived at the event – Academy and Tony award-winner, Marcia Gay Harden. Harden – who appeared in dozens of films including Miller’s Crossing, Pollock, First Wives Club, Mystic River and Into the Wild, arrived at the Walk with her daughter, Eulala, at 8:30 a.m. From then until after the festivities ended at noon, the star signed autographs, talked to and had her picture taken with dozens of participants. She also spoke at the opening ceremony. The star and her daughter were among 200 participants at this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s at the Adams County Fairgrounds. An ardent Alzheimer’s advocate and Alzheimer’s Association spokesperson, Harden is currently in Cincinnati filming a new movie “Point Blank.” When she heard of the Walk in West Union, she immediately expressed her desire to attend. “Ms. Harden is an incredible supporter of the care and cure of those battling Alzheimer’s, and she couldn’t have been more gracious to everyone at the Walk, “ said Paula Kollstedt, Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati. “She testified before Congress in June about the importance of increased funding for Alzheimer’s, the sixth leading killer in the U.S., and the only disease among the top 10 that has no survivors. We are honored to know her and were so fortunate to have her at our first walk of the year!”

Star of the CBS television series “Code Black,” Harden recently wrote about her mother’s journey with Alzheimer’s disease in her book, The Season of My Mother: A Memoir of Love, Family and Flowers. Kollstedt says that while the Walk is over, fundraising will continue through December. As an incentive to meet the ABH Walk goal, anyone who raises or donates $500 or more will be eligible for a special draw-

ing to receive one of 15 signed copies of Harden’s book. You can donate to the Adams, Brown and Highland Counties Walk on line at alz.org/walk, then search for the ABH Walk. Or you can send a check, noting it is for the ABH Walk, to Alzheimer’s Association, 644 Linn Street, Cincinnati, Ohio 45203. Winners of the autographed books will be notified in time for holiday

giving. As the primary national fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association, Walk to End Alzheimer’s® is an annual event that brings communities together across the nation to remember, support and work to find a cure for those affected. Proceeds from the event directly fund programs and services of the Southeastern Ohio branch office of the

Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati, serving families in Adams, Brown and Highland counties. Association programs and services are provided free of charge. Alzheimer’s, which kills more people than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined, is not only the most feared disease in the nation, but also the most expensive, costing U.S. taxpayers and families affected $277 billion a year.

Today, more than 5.7 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease and, unless something is done, that number is expected to more than double in the next 20 years. The Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati serves 27 counties in Southern Ohio, Southeastern Indiana and Northern Kentucky where an estimated 50,000 people have Alzheimer’s disease.

The Jazz Educators Big Band, JEBB, performing. Photo provided.

The Jazz Educators Big Band, or JEBB, was formed in 2015 by Music Director Jerry Robinson as a band composed of retired school band directors from the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area.. The purpose was to unite these former music educators who love to play jazz, and give them opportunities to play in a group together, thus continuing friendships with those who were colleagues during their teaching years. Soon, the band began playing concerts and assemblies in area schools, encouraging young students to play an instrument, or to continue playing their instruments in their school bands. The Jazz Educators Big Band performs with 18 instrumentalists, a vocalist,

and an emcee, and their music catalogue represents the music of the big bands such as Count Basie, and Duke Ellington, but also includes music from many contemporary jazz and rock groups such as Chicago, Blood Sweat and Tears, Gordon Goodwin, Maynard Ferguson and others. Many of the band's songs are arranged by musicians who are in the band, showcasing the various talents and writing skills in the group. The members of the Jazz Educators Big Band have taught instrumental music in the following Greater Cincinnati school districts: Lakota, Lebanon, Amelia, Kings, Deer Park, Clermont County, Campbell County, Boone County, Newport, Walton Verona, Wabahani H.S., Selma (Indiana),

Sycamore, Newport, Colerain, Mt. St. Joseph Univ., and others. Most members of the band can also be seen playing professionally in various other combinations in restaurants, clubs, and banquet rooms in the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area. These musicians have performed during their careers with such notable jazz and rock artists as: Buddy Rich, Bill Evans, Doc Severinsen, Stan Kenton, Frank Sinatra Jr., The Drifters, The Temptations, Chubby Checker, Bobby Vinton, The Temptations, Dolly Parton, Kool and the Gang, and The Vandelles, to name a few. The band is set to perform at the Union Township Amphitheatre on Aug. 16 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Time to collect milkweed pods to help the monarchs It’s that time again! The Ohio Pollinator Habitat Initiative is calling on Ohioans for a second year of milkweed pod collections. This project started in 2015 as a seven-county pilot and last year hundreds of Ohioans worked together, said Judy Krebs, education coordinator for the Clermont Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD). Since then the volunteers

have collected approximately 5,000 gallons of common milkweed seed pods, totaling more than 22 million seeds. Milkweed is the only host plant for the monarch butterfly for egg laying and caterpillar rearing. It also serves as a food source for monarchs as well as many other pollinator species. The disappearance of milkweed across the United States has contributed to the

80 percent decline of the Eastern monarch butterfly population over the last 20 years. “We are working hard to change this, and we can use all the help we can get,” Krebs said. Make sure that before you collect seeds, you become familiar with the common milkweed to avoid harvesting pods from similar plants such as hemp dogbane and swamp milkweed. Krebs offers these tips:

· It is best (and important) to collect the pods when they are dry and gray or brown. · If the center seam pops with gentle pressure, the pod can be harvested. · Store pods in paper bags; plastic bags collect unwanted moisture. · Put date and county collected on the bag when you

turn them in. · Keep pods in a cool, dry area until you can deliver them to the nearest collection site. · You can find the nearest collection site at http://www.agri.ohio.gov/di vs/SWC/searchlocalSWCD.aspx Collections start Sept. 1 and continue through Oct. 30. SWCD will accept pods

until Nov. 1 at its office at the County Fairgrounds in Owensville. If you have questions regarding milkweed collection, please contact Judy Krebs at jkrebs@clermontcountyohio.gov, Marci Lininger at Marci.Lininger@dot.ohio.g ov or Lori Stevenson at Lori_Stevenson@fws.gov. For more information on milkweeds refer to this video: http://u.osu.edu/beelab/milkweed-seed/.
