Wahlburgers potentially coming to Union Twp. Recycling woes in the township BY BRETT MILAM Editor

The Union Township Board of Trustees met on Sept. 27 to discuss Wahlburgers rumors and recycling woes. Ken Geis, township administrator, said the township has a lot of projects going on, but what's really attracted attention is Wahlburgers, the Bostonbased burger joint started by Paul Wahlberg, brother of the actor Mark Wahlberg and their other brother Donnie. The chain has a location in downtown Cincinnati on 6th Street. "I can't tell you how many calls we've had and it lights up our Facebook page and all of that," he said. "I can't officially say that Wahlburgers is coming, but that'll be one of the worst kept secrets in Union Township." That would be in the Eastgate North Road area, Geis said. Construction is also underway in that area for a new Waffle House. "When you look at that Eastgate North area, that's going to make it very challenging with the new hotel going in there," he said, with one, maybe two lots available. "It doesn't seem that long ago that there was nothing there. That's very positive." The Eastgate Starbucks is also moving next to Mike's Carwash with a new drivethru addition. Additionally, the bid for Tealtown Ballpark Field renovation project has been awarded to Logan Creek, LLC, in the amount of $216,263.45, which is in line with the $250,000 grant the township was awarded for the project. "That's a much needed improvement to that site," Geis said. "With that, we anticipate that that's going to be one of, if not the largest, generators of new hotel stays in the region for Union Township and everyone else." Council approved the bid. Scott Gaviglia, police chief, shared some highlights from the investigative unit in his August report. Richard Gaskins, 40, of Union Township, was charged with felony illegal use of a minor in a nudityoriented material or performance. Gaskins pleaded

not guilty on Aug. 15 to the charge in Clermont County Common Pleas Court before Judge Jerry McBride. Gaviglia said they expect more charges to come against Gaskins in the near future. Gaskins is next due in court before McBride on Oct. 11 at 8:30 a.m. Susan Powers, 68, of Cincinnati, was charged with involuntary manslaughter stemming from a July 22, 2016 offense. She was also charged with two counts of corrupting another with drugs and trafficking in cocaine or heroin and aggravated trafficking in drugs, a felony. An investigation revealed that she [allegedly] supplied fentanyl and heroin to two victims, who passed away from the overdose, Gaviglia said. On Aug. 31, Powers posted her $150,000 bond and pleaded not guilty. By Sept. 5, a motion to modify her bond was granted by Judge Victor Haddad.

She's due in front of Haddad on Oct. 10 at 10 a.m. Shawn Black and Brandy Dooley, both of Bethel, were charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle and theft, respectively. A summons was issued on Sept. 20 for Black to appear in court, but by Oct. 2, it was returned with no service, as Black, 25, could not be found and did not appear in court. Dooley, 40, pleaded not guilty. She's due in court on Oct. 26 at 8:30 a.m. in front of Judge Richard Ferenc. Gaviglia said the two [allegedly] stole a car from a UDF in Union Township. Dooley was also charged with a theft of firearm that was located in the stolen car. Bill Brown, a Union Township resident on Cedar Run Court, spoke before the board. Brown used to live in Tate Township, he said, but has since lived in Union Township for the last year. He asked the board about recycling, noting that he

heard the township had recycling centers at one point. In June, the county's Office of Environmental Quality, which manages the recycling centers, closed the recycling drop-off site at Shor Park in Union Township because of the site being misused. The next closest drop-off site is Salt Barn at 4015 Filager Road in Batavia or the Miami Township Fire Department South at 1154 US 50. As for curbside assistance, Republic Services has stopped offering recycling services in Union Township because the company said not enough people were buying in. "I understand that there's issues with vandalism and people dumping things that aren't necessarily meant for the recycling centers and I can understand how that could be a problem, but having said that, we don't barricade roads because we have speeders on them and we don't close down build-

ings because we have graffiti on them; we find the offenders and arrest them," Brown said. A township with nearly 50,000 residents ought to be able to police that area, so there's not couches and other inappropriate items being dumped, Brown said. Brown said he's a lifelong recycler because he has kids and stewardship of the earth and passing it down to them as such is important to him. Robert McGee, president of the board, said Brown's point was well taken, but that they've tried it in the past. Dumpsters were set up for such a purpose at the Union Township Civic Center, he said, and it was a "total, total mess." "We had people going through the trash looking for cans and plastic bottles to recycle their self. And we had mattresses, couches, chairs sitting up there that it became so bad," McGee said. "We were having to police it every day. It became very, very bad for us."

Brown responded that if we caught the offenders and prosecuted them rather than making everybody else suffer, that would deter such activity. He suggested putting a camera near the dumpster to watch who is illegally dumping. John McGraw suggested one alternative was to pay Rumpke for curbside recycling services. McGraw said the township could do a trash aggregation and get a township-wide rate from a trash provider that would include recycle, although he would prefer that as a ballot initiative. "A lot of people are really against that, but maybe if there was more of a support, if people are interested in that, I know we could save people money on their trash collection, but people are stubborn and they like to pick their own trash providers," he said. But it's something to explore down the road, McGraw said.
