West Clermont volleyball hoping for quick start

PHOTO / GARTH SHANKLIN

Senior middle hitter Emma Krebs was an Eastern Cincinnati Conference honorable mention as a junior in 2018. She’s one of two seniors on the Lady Wolves’ roster in 2019.

BY GARTH SHANKLIN Sports Editor

Editor’s Note: This story originally ran in the August 15 edition of The Clermont Sun. An accompanying photo of Emme Madden contained a caption indicating she would return to the West Clermont volleyball team in 2109. Madden is not a member of the Lady Wolves this season. The Clermont Sun regrets this error. Weird. Coaches don’t often describe seasons with that word, but West Clermont head coach Cheryl Korfhagen felt it was an adequate way to describe how the Lady Wolves’ 2018 campaign went. “Last season was kind of weird," Korfhagen said. "I

thought we did well. I thought we started out slow and then got better as the year went on. I didn't feel like it was as cohesive as the first year." On the surface, the 2018 season got off to an average start for the Lady Wolves. The team won two matches to start the season, then dropped the next two. After 10 contests, West Clermont was 7-3 overall, but the team finished the year 139. The Lady Wolves made noise in the postseason, defeating Sycamore and Princeton in straight sets. A three-set loss to Ursuline ended the 2018 campaign. In 2019, change abounds for the Lady Wolves. This year’s team features just two seniors, and a handful of players from last season are in different posi-

tions. Yet, according to Korfhagen, the team’s offseason training has been smooth thus far. “It's gone pretty well,” Korfhagen said. “We start out slow, but then we pick it up as the scrimmage goes on. I think we'll be OK. We'll find out Saturday." West Clermont is scheduled to open the regular season on Saturday, August 17 against Oak Hills at noon. They’re hoping to avoid the slow starts that plagued the team during the 2018 campaign. "We just need to start quicker," Korfhagen said. "We're slow getting started. We met with all the girls, and every single one of them said that before we even said anything. We just start slow. We need to pick it up at the beginning."

The team’s two seniors, Aubrey Bard and Emma Krebs, will be key in getting the team off to a solid start. The two of them are excelling on the court and in the classroom, according to Korfhagen. "They're great leaders on and off the court," "Both girls are pretty much fighting for valedictorian and salutatorian, so they're great role models. They'll be my leaders on the court for sure. Bard, the libero, is more of a vocal leader. She's really been a great leader for all the younger girls." Krebs doesn’t lead the same way Bard does, but it’s effective nonetheless. "[Krebs], she's really improved," Korfhagen said. "She's really stepped up and feels a lot more comfortable with her role. She's

really a quiet leader by her play, but she's way more comfortable on the floor than she has been the last two years. I think she'll really step up for us too this year." Hannah Sophomore Graves is one of the players at a new position this year. “[Graves] was my middle, but we moved her back outside, which is her natural position,” Korfhagen said. “ I think they'll step

up, I think Madison Snyder will give us some good time on the court.” In all, West Clermont’s roster consists of 12 players, including six sophomores. They’ll look to compete in what could be a wide-open Eastern Cincinnati Conference. “We have a lot of new coaches, and a lot of our power players are gone because they were seniors last year," Korfhagen said.
