In their second season of competition in the Southern Buckeye Conference American (SBC-A) Division, Amelia head coach Tara Kaiser feels her charges will surely advance from last year’s 812 overall regular season mark and 4-7 (tied for fifth place) in the league. The Barons return exactly onehalf of the eight players who earned varsity letters from a season ago. Among the returnees are senior guard Kymmy Simon and senior guard and forward Megan Mentzel who earned all-conference recognition last year. Kaiser pointed out her charges have “speed, athleticism, desire, and effort.” But the Blue and White has a shortage of height. Amelia will get good performances on the hardwood from “the experienced” Simon and Mentzel. Kaiser noted the “good instinctive play” from junior forward Cassidy Bailey, junior forward Danielle Lehn, and the “spirited play” of senior forward Alanna Whited as examples of others of her team she expects to have good season. From the Amelia viewpoint, Western Brown stands a good shot at repeating as the SBC-A champion because the Broncos are “bringing back some of their best
Head coach Tara Kaiser players.” The Barons’ mentor believes her team “will be competitive. Our goal is to be at the top. I feel better about this team than any other I’ve ever had. They are very excited to get started playing ball.”

Batavia Bulldogs have experience, depth
Wildcats coach expects a winning season
BY RICHARD CRAWFORD Sun staff
BY RICHARD CRAWFORD Sun staff
Coach Mike Hatfield sees the return of seven of the nine Bulldogs he lettered a year ago from a squad that had a 7-13 regular season record and 3-7 (fifth place tie) in the Southern Buckeye Conference National (SBC-N) Division. “We’re going to have an experienced team and we’ll have depth,” said the former cage all-star at Glen Este High School. “We don’t shoot real well as a team, though, and we’re not real tall.” The head coach at the county seat high school believes he has a quartet of talent to build his team’s success around, senior point guard Brian Hawk, senior point guard Dwayne Smith, junior forward Alex White, and senior forward David Pelphrey. “The league is going to be wide open,” said Hatfield of the SBC-N title chase. “There are so many players who graduated from last year. Everybody lost a lot. Blanchester should win it, they have a tall team. Then maybe Georgetown after that. They’re always so good. “I expect us to be competitive for the league championship. We’ll be competitive in every one of our games.”
Five of the eight players who earned varsity letters one year ago have returned at Williamsburg High School for another season of Southern Buckeye Conference National (SBC-N) Division girls basketball action. Last year the Wildcats were 119 for the regular season and the Blue and White was 5-5 in league competition. Head coach of the Wildcats, Ken Lowe, is anxious to continue on with another year of progress in the development of his program. “We have experience with our five players we have back and they have quickness, but we are continuing to work on developing the leadership skills of the girls,” he said. The quintet of ‘Cats around whom their coach is building his positive expectations are senior forward and center Tara Dennis, senior guard Heidi McManus, an SBC-N all-leaguer last year, junior guard Elizabeth Meisberger, junior forward Sarah

East Clinton’s Astros are his forecast to be the next toughest SBC-N team

Wildcats are inexperienced, but have good speed
Lady Bulldogs expect to be improved this year
BY RICHARD CRAWFORD Sun staff

The Williamsburg varsity boys cagers will be doing some rebuilding with just two letterman back in the fold from the eight players who earned letters from last year’s Southern Buckeye Conference National Division championship squad that was 9-1 in the league and 16-4 during the regular season. “Our team will have quickness. It’ll be a team with speed, but we’re not very big. Six-foot-three is our biggest player and we are inexperienced,” said Dan McKibben, himself a former cage all-star at ‘Burg who was the National Division’s coach of the year a year ago. Leading the way for the Wildcats will be senior guard Jack Herren and junior guard and forward Kendal Young. Young was a Southern Buckeye Conference
Batavia plans to vastly improve on its 1-19 regular season record of a year ago and 0-10 in the Southern Buckeye Conference National (SBC-N) Division. Four of the eight girls who lettered last year are back. Head coach Beth Wolfer is encouraged by what she has seen in the pre-season. “We have team quickness and they are able to finish up with their shots. We’re working on improving our shooting,” she said, adding, “But we lack height. We don’t have a really big person on the team. Our little group will have to play hard lacking height.” Wolfer has a couple of players she expects to help lead the Bulldogs with their overall efforts - freshman Sam McElfresh, an American Athletic Union (AAU) all-Ohio player who her coach says will play all positions, and junior forward McKenna Fraley who earned SBC-N all-star recognition last year. In the SBC-N battle for the gold, Wolfer expects the perennial champion Georgetown Lady GMen to be the favorite again because “they always have strong basketball athletes.
Head coach Dan McKibben National Division all-star a year ago. Gone are all-conference performers Elliott Young and Matt Richardson. “We have some guys with good potential,” said McKibben. “How we do depends on how quick we overcome our inexperience. But we will be competitive.” Varsity Roster Luke Workman, 5-feet, 10-inches, junior guard; Jacob Herren, 5-

Tigers to benefit from good guard play
Experience, senior leadership to boost Lady Lions
BY RICHARD CRAWFORD Sun staff
BY RICHARD CRAWFORD Sun staff
Bethel-Tate head boys basketball coach Craig Stork lost five lettermen from last year’s squad and he sees the return of two lettermen. The Tigers were 12-8 for the regular-season and 4-6 (fourth place) in the American Division race of the Southern Buckeye Conference (SBC-A). Tyler Bullock and Garrett Lang are the Southern Buckeye Conference American all-stars who graduated. “We’re going to have decent guard play. This team has good team chemistry and everyone of the players works had every day,” said Stork, cautioning, we do lack size, we don’t have much.” “If we want to be successful this year we’ll have to able to play good defense and play hard.” A quintet of Tigers are expected to help lead the Red and Gray senior guard Matt Small, junior point guard Tyler Atkins, senior forward Ryan Reese, junior guard Jason Adams, and junior guard Russell Hartley. The head coach from Bethel pointed out Goshen, defending SBC-A champion, and Western Brown lost the most talent. “The conference is up for grabs,” Stork said. “The team that works the hardest and improves the most through the season should win the league. “We’re working hard to get better every day. The kids are buying into our program.”
Brad Hatfield, head coach of the New Richmond varsity girls basketball team, expects his team to be able to build around some good senior talent and leadership. Last year the Lions were 10-10 during the regular season and 6-4 (co-runner-up) in the Southern Buckeye Conference American (SBC-A) Division title chase. He has some good experience returning to the fold among his one half-dozen returning letter earners. He lost a pair through graduation. “We’ve got good senior leadership and we’ll have good team defense,” said the former Felicity High School basketball all-star. But he cautioned, “We’re weak handling pressure when we’re handling the ball and we need to communicate better.” His two standout veterans from a year ago who are back to help lead the Lions’ efforts are sophomore center Josie Buckingham and senior point guard Sarah Shoemaker. Both were SBC-A allstars last year. Among the lost is league all-star performer Reno Frayne. Hatfield anticipates that Western Brown will be tough in its defense of the SBC-A crown it won a year ago. “They’ll be really competitive and Goshen will be one of the best teams in the league. . . “We’ll be tough. I don’t think anybody can compete with our size. We have speed and good athleticism, too. We have a strong senior class. We’re all going to work hard. The underclassmen will play hard and keep the pressure to play hard on the seniors.”

Seven starters returning to the Lions’ lineup

New Richmond may be the most improved boys varsity basketball squad in the American Division of the Southern Buckeye Conference (SBC). Head coach Brian McMonigle will have seven of the 11 players back in the Den from last year’s team that was 2-18 overall and 19 (sixth place) in the conference. “We’re going to have stronger guard play this year,” said McMonigle. “This team is a lot more experience this year overall. They’re playing hard defensively, too. There’s a lot of pride in this team. . . “We’re going to have to work on our play in the post, though. We have inexperience.” McMonigle, who was a former basketball all-star at New Richmond High and Clermont College, feels Amelia and Western Brown will be the teams to beat in the Southern Buckeye American. He feels he has some talented players to help lead the turn around of the fortunes of the NRHS boys varsity - senior point guard Nick Hill, senior small forward Chris Turner, and senior guard Jake Gundler. “We’ll be competitive in the league. We have a good number of kids who get along well and are working hard to improve themselves.”
It should be an interesting varsity girls basketball season at Bethel-Tate High School. The Tigers have quickness to toughen their rugged defense for this campaign, but good overall team size does not really exist. Last year the Red and Gray was 13-7 overall regular season and 64 and second in the Southern Buckeye Conference American Division (SBC-A) race. Head coach Dave Fallis welcomes the return of four of the six players he lettered a year ago from a tough (SBC-A) championship chase. “Definitely our defense will be a strength and we have good overall team speed,” he said. But he added that his charges are “undersized. We are not a tall team. . . “We are going to need our speed and defense to lead us to overcoming our lack of size.” The Red and Gray has two starters back in the fold from a season ago. Senior center and forward Cyra Jones and senior point guard Carolin Baker, a SBC-A allstar, are returning to share their talented leadership capabilities and experience with their teammates. Graduated are SBC-A all-stars Tess Jenike and Brooke Kenneda. Fallis expects this duo will receive help from some up-andcoming talent the likes of junior guard Sydney Kilgore, senior small forward Andi Lanigan, and junior guard Taylor Atkins. “I’m counting on these girls to be our leading defensive players,” said their coach. Fallis expects the Southern Buckeye Conference American race to be “interesting…Western Brown always has solid basketball players and they are good outside shooters. Amelia will be a contender, too. They came on strong last year. “We’re trying to build our program on the success we had last year. We can be competitive in the league and we can beat other teams in the league if our speed is there.”

Lack of experience won’t hamper Rockets
Lady Eagles expect to improve on last year’s record

Clermont Northeastern lost eight players who first-year head coach Jason Iles described as “the heart and soul of the team. He has no varsity returning lettermen with whom to lead or build his squad around. “The guys are very quick and athletic,” said their coach, but he cautioned his charges are “not very big.” Among the departed are Southern Buckeye Conference American (SBC-A) Division allstars the twin towers Jake and Josh Hogue, Ryan Mummert, and John Bailey. Iles does see some potential talent on his young squad. Senior Lucas Wolfe is described by his coach as “all-purpose,” others foreseen to do well are junior post Derek Schmidt, senior guard Trey Johnson who is “a lot quicker this year,” sophomore shooting guard Jay Teaney, and senior forward and center Alex Gilkerson “the most athletic player on the team.” The new Northeastern head honcho expects SBC-A defending champion Goshen to be tough to unseat and that Amelia may have the best chance to do so. “I think we’ll be pretty successful,” said Iles. “We’ll be doing a lot of new things. The Milford varsity girls basketball team has the ammo to unleash on the opposition to improve on last year’s 10-11 overall record and 6-10 Fort Ancient Valley Conference East (FAVC-E) Division (fifth place) mark. Conference all-star and senior forward-guard Morgan Wolcott is back, but is currently injured. She is expected to help lead the E-Gals along with another all-star senior Kelly Yee at guard. Five of the seven players who lettered last year are back in the nest. “The girls have been working hard and many of them are soccer players who are in good shape already,” said Milford head coach Kristi McKinney of the soccer team which finished its very successful season very recently. “We have four seniors so we have leadership and experience

Jason Kreimer, head coach of the Clermont Northeastern varsity girls basketball team, expects his charges to be competitive once again in the Southern Buckeye Conference American (SBC-A) Division race. Last year’s regular season record was 8-12 and the Blue and Gold was 4-6 and in fourth place in the SBC-A. He sees the return of four letter earners from a year ago. Six who earned letters last year are not coming back. Among the graduated players are SBC-A all-star Alexis Schmidt and Cydney Hill. “We’ve got big girls down low and that will make us strong under the basket and can give us control of the boards,” said Northeastern’s head coach. He added, “We lack experience. We have only two players with a lot of varsity experience.” The taller Rockets expected to do well on the boards are junior forward Carly Aselage, senior forward Emily Werring, junior forward Jessica Kirby, and senior forward Spanky Burdsall. Junior guard Osborn is expected by her coach to be the CNE mainstay in the backcourt. “Western Brown has won the league about the past three years so I expect them to be tough again and Bethel should be good, too. New Richmond will be good, too. They have that six (feet) five (inches tall) girl. “We have a tough schedule, but we can definitely be an improved team. We will have to work on gaining experience,” Kreimer said.

Cardinals have good shooters, quickness, depth
Lady Warriors set sight on winning the league
BY RICHARD CRAWFORD Sun staff
BY RICHARD CRAWFORD Sun staff
Exactly one-half of the eight boys who earned varsity basketball letters at Felicity a year ago have returned for another season. Among those graduated was Southern Buckeye Conference National (SBC-N) Divison all-star Matthew O’Brien. Leading the way this year will be returning SBC-N all-league Trevor Shouse. Damon Smith remains as the head mentor at his alma mater. He said, “We’ve got a lot of experience and quickness and depth and we’ve got some pretty good shooters. What we lack is size. We’ll have some trouble with our rebounding. Shouse, a senior point guard, is currently recovering from an injury and will be missed early-on, but two other Cardinals are expected to be tough this season. They are senior forward Jeremy Moore who Smith says is strong, but particularly “strong on the left side of the floor” and senior off guard Jake Frey has “quickness and is a good shooter.” “We’re going to have to learn to play together as a team and they are going to have to learn to play their role.” Predicted the Cardinals’ head coach, “Blanchester should be the team to beat. They have most of their players back and Georgetown
The Warriors have a lot of returning experience as the Goshen varsity girls basketball team prepares to begin another campaign in the American Division of the Southern Buckeye Conference (SBC-A). There are eight letter earners returning to the encampment with the loss of three. Among that number are league all-stars performers Kelsi Steele and Allie Jeandrevin. Last year the Red and Gray was 6-14 during the regular season and 3-7 (tied for fifth place in the SBC-A). Dave Mason is beginning his first season as the head coach of the Warriors. He said, “This team has a lot of maturity among the seniors we have. We have depth and good guards and speed and quickness, but we have a lot of young players and we don’t have much size.” The new head coach at Goshen expects his standout players to be senior point guard Kelsey Steele, senior guard Allie Jeandrevin, sophomore post Becca Davidson, senior post Courtney Taylor, and when they return from knee injuries, senior post Jessica Wilcher and senior post Courtney Tucker. Masoon’s choice to win the league will be Western Brown for a repeat because “they are the defending champions and always have a good program. “ He also anticipates that New Richmond with “some size” will be a major factor for the league title chase along with his own team and Amelia who he said is similar to his team because “we’re about the same in many ways and

Warriors to have a rebuilding season
Cardinals have speed, experience, leadership
BY RICHARD CRAWFORD Sun staff

There is plenty of rebuilding going on at Goshen among the boys basketball players and head coach Scott Wake. He has no returning lettermen from last year’s Southern Buckeye Conference American (SBC-A) Division championship squad. He lost all 10 players he lettered. Among the 10 lost are his son, Nick, Derek Koch, Anthony Voto, and James Achcraft who all earned Southern Buckeye American all-conference status. “Our team has some good athletes this year and some good height, but we have no experience. I have four kids on this year’s team who didn’t even play last year,” said coach Wake who was the conference’s coach of the year having guided the Warriors to a 9-
Beginning her second year as the head girls basketball coach at her alma mater, Kerri Bertline Stamper, former Southern Buckeye Conference cage all-star, welcomes the return of all but one of the girls who lettered a year ago. “We have speed and experience, good senior leadership,” said the Cardinals’ coach who has a team that includes six seniors. But she cautioned, “We don’t have size and this is not really a strong shooting team so far.” Leading the Red and White this season will be junior center Arica stutz, senior guard Shelby Lucas, senior guard Ashley Davis, and senior guard Hillary White. Stutz is a returning all-conference pick. Stamper expects Blanchester to be the cream of the crop in the Southern Buckeye National Division race because the Wildcats “are a pretty good team and Georgetown, is always is a good team. . . East Clinton is quick, aggressive and a good defensive team. “We’ll definitely be improved this year. I expect us to be at least .500. . . We have a great group of girls who are always enthusiastic.”

Glen Este will be a very athletic team this season
Returning starters will step up for the Lady Trojans

Dave Caldwell, Glen Este head boys basketball coach, has eight returning lettermen with whom to work this season. He lost seven players who earned letters last year. Among the lost letter earners were Fort Ancient Valley Conference East (FAVC-E) Division all-stars Mike Bouley, Corey Goedde, and Shane Seckman “This team is very athletic. It’s the most athletic team in the league, but I’m not sure about our skill level,” he said, adding, “We’re small. We don’t have much size.” The Trojans’ taskmaster has a solid trio to set the Purple and White through their paces in the FAVC-E. The triumverate includes senior guard Alex Fultz, a Fort Ancient Valley East all-star last
Glen Este’s Lady Trojans have lost two key senior starters, but coach Jeff Click expects the team’s returning starters to be able to step up and lead the team. Lost to graduation were Jackie Young, a player Click says was very versatile, and Lakin Louiso, who was first team all-league and finished as one of the best 3-point shooters in school history. Click says that returning starters Hannah Carson, Katie Gaskill, and Jessie Brenes will be a key to the team’s success this season. “We’ve returned three good starters, so that’s a good thing, but we’ll have to have some people step and replace them (Louiso and Young).” Click expects Ashley Keith to play a big role in this year’s team. “We’re looking for her to step into the starting rotation and be able to fill the shoes of the people who graduated,” he said. Coach Click said that the Lady Trojans don’t have really tall players to throw the ball to on the inside, so they will be working together at half-court to create shooting opportunities. “We’re not big, but we have some good shooters, so we don’t shy away from shooting the ball,” Click said. “The 3-point shot was one of the things that we did really well last year, and we’re looking to do that again.”

“ He also anticipates that New Richmond with “some size” will be a major factor for the league title chase along with his own team and Amelia who he said is similar to his team because “we’re about the same in many ways and
Head coach Damon Smith always seems to have potential. “We’re going to be an improved team. We have the potential to be a real contender in the league.” Varsity Roster Trevor Shouse, 5-feet, 10-inches senior guard; Jeremy Moore, 5feet, 11-inches, senior forward; Jake Fry, 5-feet, 8-inches, senior wing; Jake Jones, 5-feet, 8-inches, senior guard; Clay Wehrun, 5-feet, 9-inches, senior forward; Derrick Brock, 5-feet, 9-inches, senior guard; Devin Trammell, 5-feet, 8inches, senior guard; Sean Lee, 6feet, senior center and forward, Jeremy Miller, 5-feet, 10-inches senior forward; Christopher Smith, 6-feet, 1-inch, junior forward; Shane Reese, 6-feet, 2-inches, junior center; and Ethan Rudd, 6-feet, 2-inches, junior center.

Seven starters returning to the Lions’ lineup
Speed will help boost Bethel-Tate Lady Tigers
BY RICHARD CRAWFORD Sun staff
BY RICHARD CRAWFORD Sun staff

Wildcats are inexperienced, but have good speed
Lady Bulldogs expect to be improved this year

Batavia Bulldogs have experience, depth
Wildcats coach expects a winning season

The quintet of ‘Cats around whom their coach is building his positive expectations are senior forward and center Tara Dennis, senior guard Heidi McManus, an SBC-N all-leaguer last year, junior guard Elizabeth Meisberger, junior forward Sarah

senior center, the Milford mentor expects his Eagles’ other standouts to be junior forward Garrett Mayleben, and junior point guard Brennen Farrell. From the viewpoint of northwestern Clermont County, the top teams in the Fort Ancient East title chase will be Walnut Hills’ Eagles and Turpin’s Spartans. “We could be pretty good. We going to be competing in what will be a strong defensive conference this year with the teams having a decent amount of talent coming back.” Varsity Roster Josh Roof, 5-feet, 9-inches junior guard; Josiah Greve, 6-feet, junior guard; Zach Cook, 6-feet, 2-inches, junior forward; Joe Zurschmiede, 5feet, 11-inches, junior guard; Brennen Farrell, 6-feet, 3-inches, junior guard; Garett Mayleben, 6feet, 8-inches, junior forward; Cy Overbeck, six-feet, 6-inches, junior forward; David Chesnut, 6-

The Lady Barons are, front row from left, Hannah Lehn, Alanna Whited, Megan Mentzel, Gabby Ferro; back row, Cassidy Bailey, Andrea Bresser, Danielle Lang, and Kymmy Simon. Not present for picture: Madison Terry.

Barons will have a rebuilding season BY RICHARD CRAWFORD Sun staff The Amelia varsity boys basketball squad will be doing some serious regrouping this season with the return of just two lettermen. Eight seniors graduated from a team that was 5-15 regular season and 2-8 (fifth place) in the Southern Buckeye Conference American (SBC-A) Division a year ago. One of the seniors was Tanner Owens, a conference allstar.

“We’re very young and very inexperienced. We are having a lot of competition for the starting positions and playing time.” Sophomore forward and center Tommy Hacker and sophomore guard Trevor Simon are the most experienced Barons back in the fold. Others uniformed in Blue and White who are coming along well are junior forward Michael Crowder, junior guard Ricky Moeves, and junior forward Dale Luginbuhl. “It’s going to be a challenging season for us, but its good to be back working with a good group of kids,” Mazzaro said.
