Lady Barons will try to utilize guard skills BY CHRIS CHANEY Sun staff
A senior-laden Amelia Lady Barons’ squad will take the floor in 2013-14 looking to exceed some preseason expectations in a very stout Southern Buckeye Conference American Division. Head coach Tara Kaiser fielded a roster that features five seniors, including three returning varsity players that she expects will mesh well with some younger players earning more experience at the varsity level. “The three returning players are
Elise Whitesell, Madison Terry and Lauren Nichols,” Kaiser said. “We expect a lot of good things out of them. And we have senior swing player Ainsley Pruss, who is a co-captain with (Terry) a n d (Whitesell). “ W e expect a lot from Elena McDonald and Kendall Tara Kaiser Kaiser, (who were both) swing players last year.” The Lady Barons will be a guard-oriented bunch, moreso than the 10-12 team from a year ago that finished fourth in the SBC-American. “We have great ball handlers and very hard workers,” Kaiser said. “They come to work every day with no animosity and just work hard the entire time.” Given their lack of height, Kaiser said that the Lady Barons will try to utilize their defensive team speed while remaining cognizant of staying out of foul trouble because of their short bench. On the offensive side of the ball, Amelia will try to create mismatches with their taller opponents by spreading the floor and using that space to create good

shot opportunities. “Because we’re very guardstrong and good outside shooters, we’re going to work on taking care of the ball and getting good shots,” the coach said. The Lady Barons have been projected to finish in the same position in the league this year as they did last year given the strength and returning players that New Richmond, Norwood and Western Brown bring back, but Kaiser said her team is determined to rise up the ranks. “(The league) is going to be tough,” she said. “We hope to get higher than (fourth), but we’re going to have to work for it.”

Football success is trade off ‘Burg is willing to take BY CHRIS CHANEY Sun staff
An exceptional end to the Williamsburg football season threw a wrench into the beginning of the Wildcats’ basketball preseason, keeping a handful of multisport athletes away from the court an extra week, but head coach Dan McKibben said the positives outweighed the negatives. “(The playoff appearance) lifted

school spirit tremendously,” McKibben said. “Those guys had a blast and had some great accomplishments. That’s got the whole community excited about athletics. It put us behind a couple days, but that’s fine. We still have three weeks to prepare for our first game. It’s a trade off I’m willing to make, definitely.” Eight of the 12 players on Williamsburg’s varsity roster were on the football team, so they were a bit behind as they acclimated themselves from the gridiron to the hardwood. However, McKibben says the effort and enthusiasm they showed on the football field has translated to the first few practices that he has had with them. “They’ve come back and played hard, practiced hard since they’ve been back and I really like what I’m seeing from them,” McKibben said. Many of the returning players from last season’s Southern Buckeye Conference runner-up squad will have to fill in new roles as the Wildcats saw more than 75 percent of their scoring output graduate. “Colton Brown is a senior guard who started every game for us last

He’s made himself a better athlete, so we’re looking to him for leadership.” McKibben also mentioned Nick Felts, a 6-3 forward, who has improved his post presence, along with Josh Wells and Austin Horn who started some games for Coach McKibben last year. Aside from those four, McKibben said that he is encouraged by his role players who will fill in as needed. “One through 12, this is by far the most competitive team I’ve ever had,” he said. “We don’t have a lot of drop off from top to bot-

The defending Southern Buckeye Conference American Division champion Amelia Barons bring back a strong core of talent in hopes of capturing their second consecutive league title. “We were 18-5 last year and I got four returning players from that (team),” head coach Craig Mazzaro said. “Our JV team was 18-3, so we got three or four guys from there and those guys are going to have to step up and be our five, six, seven, eight, nine players. “We got some decent height, so that should be a big help for us. We need to continue working on defense, rebounding, handling the ball; all the little stuff.” Notably returning from that league championship team is the reigning SBC-American Player of the Year, Tommy Hacker. Hacker, one of the big guys Mazzaro mentioned, stands 6-foot-5, was third on the team in scoring last season, good for just under 10 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. While the Barons will be without Trevor Simon, the team’s leading scorer last year who transferred to Loveland, they will have
Garrett Weaver, the team’s second leading scorer last season, Keegan Carson, Jack Mickler and Brogan Crouch, all of whom saw significant varsity minutes last season. Mazzaro wants to utilize the Barons’ size to open up the offense. With three guys on the roster that Craig Mazzaro stand 6-5 or taller, Amelia will boast one of the biggest frontlines in the SBC. However, Mazzaro said his team won’t be a one-dimensional offensive threat. “We try to play (inside-out), but we also want to get our outside shots from the inside game,” the coach explained. “It’s not as easy as just throwing the ball inside, you’ve got to be able to play a little bit, but hopefully we can feed off that. (Size) is a good asset to have.” While opposing teams will have their hands full with the Barons dynamic offense, Mazzaro is still waiting for a shutdown defender to step up, put his offensive skills aside and dedicate his energy to shutting down the other team’s top scoring threat. The Barons also understand the bullseye that they sport as the defending league champions and

The defending Southern Buckeye Conference American Division champions are being pegged by many to be among the favorites to win the league again in 2013-14.
Mazzaro thinks his team can retain that trophy. “Hopefully, we’re at the top,” he said. “Every team is going to be a battle. We’re a big game for everybody, but if we slip up once or twice, we’re going to lose it. “Everybody is capable of beating anyone.”

Lady Bulldogs’ strong core brings experience BY CHRIS CHANEY Sun staff
First-year head coach Jason McElfresh inherits a Batavia Lady Bulldogs team that has four seniors among four returning varsity starters that he thinks should make his inaugural jaunt through the Southern Buckeye Conference a successful one. “We’ve got a good core coming back,” he said. “Erin O’Brien, Katie Taulbee, Allison Wagoner and Jordan Foster are our seniors and Sam McElfresh who’s a junior is a two-year starter returning for her third year starting. We also have a freshman who’s going to get a lot of time, Manhattan Miller; she’s probably a starter for us.” Sam McElfresh, the Lady Bulldogs’ leading scorer last year, will be the most potent offensive threat again as a junior on a team that her coach doesn’t think will go very deep on the bench.
Coach McElfresh said that the Lady Bulldogs will dress nine fulltime varsity players and bring up a few players from JV as situations dictate. Despite the numbers, McElfresh has an athletic and wellconditioned group, many of whom have stepped off the soccer pitch and Jason McElfresh onto the basketball court, allowing Batavia to run an effective pressing defense. “Defense is the No. 1 thing,” McElfresh said of what he will bring schematically into the new position. “We don’t have a lot of double-digit scorers, so we’ll have to rely on defense. We’re going to try to create easy baskets in transition.” The Lady Bulldogs finished

fourth in the SBC-National last season, but the turnover around the league has McElfresh confident that his team can make some noise. “I think you always look at Georgetown as the favorites,” McElfresh said, handicapping the league. “Bethel has the Jenike girls, Felicity lost (Arica) Stutz, but they have a nice group, Burg is young and I don’t know a lot about CNE and their new coach. “I think overall, I’m hoping that it’s going to be very competitive and I think we can hang in there and do some things this year.” Batavia began their conference schedule on Nov. 26 vs. Burg.

move that B o g a n believes will help the future of the program, but also result in some growing pains this season. “We have one senior Hayley Bogan (Lauren Coon),” Bogan said. “She’s a smaller guard, but we’re counting on getting some leadership from her. She’s been a role model out there and helping the younger girls with some things. “We have two juniors (Dana Little and Kennedy Clark) who should be pretty strong for us as forwards and two sophomores (Savanna Rohn and Keely Ackerman) that we’re looking to make us a little stronger on the
floor.” Bogan, who came over to Burg by way of Western Brown, is planning to incorporate bits and pieces of strategy that she has picked up from her playing days through college and in her coaching experience. She said that her philosophy starts on the defensive end and goes from there. “We’re hoping to play tight defense and run with the ball after that,” she said. “I think it’s going to have to be adjusted according to our clientele because we are going to be younger. We’re going to run as much as we can and if we don’t have anything, we need to be disciplined and bring the ball back
out.” Bogan said that, again, depending on how her team matures, she would like to ramp up the defensive pressure, playing man-to-man if possible, but having the ability to change on the fly. The Lady Wildcats were fifth in the league last year and Bogan sees the defending champion Lady G-Men as the team to beat again in 2013-14. “Even against the big schools (when I was at Western Brown) Georgetown was competitive, so on this side, they’ll be the team to beat,” she said. “With us being so young, we just need to mature into some (basketball IQ).”

Bulldogs’ eclectic roster breeds high expectations
Lions hope to reverse recent trends in ‘13-14 BY CHRIS CHANEY Sun staff
O D D P A G E S
The 2013-14 New Richmond Lions aren’t looking to be average, they’re expecting to be exceptional. Returning four starters from last year’s squad, including First Team All-Southern Buckeye Conference selections John Ernst and Josh Heiden, the Lions are looking to break a couple of streaks that have extended for far too long in the minds of the New Richmond faithful: eight years without a winning season and 19 years without a league title. “We have a good group of guys returning,” head coach Brian McMonigle said. “Our seniors are great leaders and have worked hard to improve their game. Our JV went 18-2 last season and many of those players will fill positions at the varsity level.” The newcomers will fill in the roles vacated by a solid group of five seniors and gel around the four returning players from last year’s team. Big man John Ernst (6-foot-3) will have some of the post pres-

sure lifted from his shoulders as junior John Buckingham (6-foot5) will be the man in the middle this season. Heiden, the Lions leading scorer last year averaged 11.3 points per game to go along with Ernst’s 10.6. The added depth in the Brian McMonigle post as well as the line of guards the Lions have at their disposal will keep opponents constantly on their heels. Frankie Taulbee, a sophomore who saw significant time at the varsity level last season, along with Bryce Kroeger, a junior up from JV this season, will give McMonigle a number of possible guard rotations to run at opposing teams. Finishing last season at .500 in the league landed New Richmond in solo third place behind Goshen and league champion Amelia. With the Warriors uncertain of

where there offensive output is going to come from, New Richmond and Amelia have been the consensus picks as the top teams in the league. The Lions match up pretty well with the Barons who usually can dominate opponents with size. However, the emergence of Buckingham in the middle could free up Ernst to have a more active role at the forward position. The Lions open their season at Deer Park on Dec. 3 and play a pair of SBC-American games versus Goshen and at Bethel-Tate before the two favorites in the league square off on Dec. 13 at Amelia.

An exciting mix of upperclassmen experience and underclassmen talent have Batavia head coach Mike Hatfield optimistic about what his 2013-14 Bulldogs can do this season. “We have six seniors, so we have experience. I think we have some depth and I think we’re going to shoot it better than we have in a while,” Hatfield said. “We’re not huge, but I think we’re going to be able to pressure people a little bit. I think we’re going to be competitive. I really do.” The Bulldogs will be headed up by senior, third-year starting point guard Kyle Schmitgen, an AllLeague soccer player, who has done a good job as the floor gener-
al of Hatfield’s squad. Returning starters and seniors Austin Sammons and Chris Bourque will play the two-guard and power forward spots, while freshman J a k e McElfresh will bring a fresh face to the Batavia offense as will classmate Garrett Kraus who at 6-foot-4 will Mike Hatfield bring some height to the frontline once he heals up from a soccer injury. Senior Nick Herron, also 6-4, will protect the paint giving Batavia some athleticism in their big guys that Hatfield hopes will allow them to be effective all over the court.

Batavia will mix the experience of their six seniors with the talent of some underclassmen who are expected to not only play, but start games for Hatfield’s squad.
“We’re going to try to press and push it up and down,” he said. “That always sounds great, but to do that we need eight guys who can play. I think we have that, but we’ll find out fast enough.” Coming off of a third-place finish in the Southern Buckeye Conference’s National Division last season, Hatfield believes his team is among the tops in the league again this year. However, with Georgetown returning a good portion of their league championship team from last season, Hatfield still sees the G-Men as the team to beat. “I think Georgetown will still be the best with all those kids back,” Hatfield said. “I think we should be on their heels, though.” The Bulldogs begin their season on Nov. 30 at St. Bernard.

‘District championship or bust’ for the Lady Lions
Lady Tigers have high hopes once team gets healthy BY CHRIS CHANEY Sun staff
Coming off of back-to-back losing seasons, the 2013-14 BethelTate Lady Tigers have the talent and experience to reverse that trend. Moreover, head coach Dave Fallis believes that if the Lady Tigers get the right breaks, a Southern Buckeye Conference American Division title is not out of the question. “We have four returning starters, but we’re not a big team this year,” Fallis said. “We have three sophomores and three freshmen that will be a part of our varsity group.” When talking about Bethel’s team, one name invariably comes up: Jenike. As in junior Brooke
and sophomore Julia. The sisters combined for 27.2 of the Lady Cards’ 49.2 points per game last season, but Bethel will have to do w i t h o u t Dave Fallis Brooke for what Fallis said would be at least the first half of the season after the guard suffered a small tear in her elbow. Fallis is expecting the team to shoulder the burden as a whole rather than individually. “We’re going to do it by committee,” Fallis said. “Julia will take over Brooke’s spot (at point

We’re throwing her into the fire right away, but she does all the little stuff really well, fundamentally sound. We’re really excited about her.” Abbie Shinkle, the lone senior on the roster, will also be asked to step up and take on a bigger role not only as a leader, but also as a scorer. Similarly, Allison Poe, the only other junior on the roster, will have to step up as well. Originally, Fallis wanted to press full-court more this year, but current situations have dictated that the Lady Cards fall back into

He said his group is gelling well and playing with a purpose, giving him some optimism heading into the first week of the season. In the conference, Fallis admits that the Lady Tigers have some tough competition, but believes they can compete with anyone. “(The league)’s going to be tough because we’ll be playing against three teams that played for sectional championships,” he said. “There’s not going to be a night off, everyone is going to be strong, but if we play our game we can play with anyone.”

And it’s district championship or bust,” Hatfield said. “We’ve worked at this for a long time and this is the culmination of a lot of hard work and we have very high expectations.” Looking at a Lady Lions roster, you’re eyes are immediately drawn to 6-foot-5 senior center

ment of three-year starter Bailey Workman and the all-around games of Alexis Meyer and Tina Lawrence. Each of these players benefit from playing with Buckingham in the middle. When she draws double- and sometimes triple-teams, Hance, Workman, Meyers and Lawrence see their offensive effectiveness skyrocket given the attention paid to Buckingham. Even given the strength of New Richmond’s returning starting five, Hatfield wasn’t convinced that his team is the one to beat in the Southern Buckeye Conference American Division. “I don’t know how obviously we are the favorites,” he said. “Norwood returns four starters from a team that won 20 games last year. Bethel is probably the best perimeter team in the league with the Jenike sisters who are all but impossible to guard. Western Brown reloads every year; they’re always a threat and Amelia and Goshen have kids that can score. “The league is very deep. The league is very evenly balanced.” While the league championship is first and foremost in the minds of the Lady Lions, a potential state tournament run is not out of the question. Hatfield said that if New Richmond doesn’t advance past the district championship then the season would be a bust. Given the talent and determination of the team he puts on the court every night, that goal is not out of the realm of possibility.

Eagles will deviate from usual style due to new personnel BY CHRIS CHANEY Sun staff
The Milford Eagles are going to have to do things differently in 2013-14 than they have in years past as the size that has been their
staple has grown out of the program, being replaced by a younger, more guard-oriented squad this year. “I have three players back only,” head coach Joe Cambron said. “One of them was a starter —

We have a whole mess of new kids coming up from JV and a kid new to the Joe Cambron school. “We’re not very experienced, but we have potential. We’re very different than we’ve been in the last few years. We’ve been pretty big, but we’re not that big this year.” Given the Eagles’ perimeter-oriented personnel, Cambron wants to get up and down the court more and implement a more hectic defensive style to speed up their opponents. “We had so much size the last few years that we felt we couldn’t
go out and guard the past few years, but we can now so I think our defense will be noticeably different.” Coming off a season in which the Eagles finished second to Walnut Hills in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference, Cambron
sees the league as up for grabs with so much turnover, but he gives the nod to Walnut given their pedigree. “I think we’re in the mix,” he said. “Any where from (second) to (fourth). We’re definitely in the mix.”

The Bethel-Tate Tigers will have new look on the court and on the sideline in 2013-14 as a relatively young Tigers squad will be under the direction of first-year head coach Reggie Hall. “For the most part, we’re going to be pretty young with not a lot of varsity experience,” Hall said. “We have three guys back from last year, Samuel Price and Blace Haviland. Sam started every game and Blace was out with some injuries from football. A new coach taking over a young team has its advantages and disadvantages in that he can implement his new system with little to no pushback, but he also doesn’t have a plethora of experience among his upperclassmen. “The boys have been working very, very hard,” Hall said. “I’m really excited about that. They’ve bought in. Sometimes half the battle is getting them to buy in and we haven’t had any of that. We ask them to jump, they ask how high. We never have to fight with anyone, now we just have to continue to improve.” The Tigers finished last season with a 7-16 overall record and in the basement of the Southern

I know Georgetown will be good. New Richmond has (John) Ernst and another big kid. There are some very good teams in the league and we’re excited to be a part of it. Lady Rockets hope to turn some heads in 13-14 BY CHRIS CHANEY Sun staff
The Mark Short regime at Clermont Northeastern gets underway in 2013-14 as the longtime boys’ coach at Blanchester High School moved into the girls’ game in the offseason to take the place of Jason Kreimer. Short, who is in his 14th year as a head coach, inherits an upperclassmen-filled roster that, despite their age, lacks in much varsity experience. “We have one girl back who started last year, Rachel Ward, and she is currently injured,” Short said. “After that, we have very little experience. Even given the fact that we have six seniors, none of them have any experience. Two of
them are back from playing for the first time since they were freshmen or eighth graders. “It’s an inexperienced team who are trying to learn a whole new system, so we’re going to have to go through our growing pains for a while.” Short will look to those seniors as a calming pres- Mark Short ence and leaders even if they may lack in realtime know-how. Abbi Pritchard, Briana Simpson, Devin Chandler, Julia Kelley, Katelynn Holmes and Katie Phair will shoulder the senior load and the majority of the backcourt responsibilities with Phair being the only non-guard in the group. Jenna Mummert, a 6-foot-2 sophomore, will likely play down low with Phair and junior Jackie Sullivan and sophomore Lexie Walker could see some minutes as well. Short’s system implementation includes a more up-tempo style than CNE players and fans have grown accustomed to. “We’re going to try run a little bit,” he said. “I’ve got some athletes, but our basketball skills are not where they need to be and that’s what we have to work on.” In a conference that has been dominated by Georgetown in recent years, Short expects the Lady G-Men to be the cream of the crop, but believes the rest of the league should be pretty open. You should have a few games under your belt before you go into league play. “The road goes through Georgetown,” he said. “I think we’re going to be picked to finish last or next to last, but I think we can change some minds along the way.” Short and the Lady Rockets can begin to change those minds right away, playing Felicity-Franklin, Williamsburg, Blanchester and Batavia all before the middle of December.

Inexperienced Warriors will rely on tough defense as offense comes around BY CHRIS CHANEY Sun staff
O D D
The Goshen Warriors are trying to skip over the rebuilding stage and jump straight into reloading in 2013-14 as head coach Scott Wake’s squad graduated three AllConference performers and returns just one varsity player. “Primarily Austin Smith, a senior guard for us, is the only one who’s back,” Wake said. “We had a couple of juniors who dressed varsity, but didn’t play a lot. We’re pretty inexperienced. We lost four seniors last year who did most everything for us.” Smith was the third-leading scorer last season, good for 10 points a night, but he will have to pick up some production during his senior season to keep the Warriors near the top of the Southern Buckeye Conference
American Division. Smith will have four other seniors playing alongside him this season — A u s t i n Parker, Bo B a l d r i c k , Scott Wake Michael Pigman and Noah Knuckles — who will have to gain their experience and become leaders on the fly. Juniors Cody Schock and Nick Brown, sophomore Chase Bellamy and freshman Ryan Wake round out the roster and will make up the majority of the reserve players for Goshen. acted by a stingy defense, Coach Wake said. “Expectations are that if we can play some defense and keep working on our shooting, like everybody else, we’ll be okay,” he said. “Defense is the key. If we can play defense, we’ll be in it because our offense is going to take a while.” Wake said he expects to keep it simple with his inexperienced team, not asking too much from them on the defensive side of the ball playing a majority of halfcourt zone. After finishing in second place to Amelia last year in the league,
Wake sees the Barons as the team to beat again in 2013-14. “(Amelia) has most of their kids back,” he said. “They have the two big kids, Weaver and Hacker. I think New Richmond is going to be next with their two big kids and from there on out, I think it’ll be a toss up.” The Warriors will be able to get two regular season games under their belts before they run the first of two gauntlet stretches where they play all five of their American Division opponents within a twoweek window. Goshen opens with Ross on Nov. 29 and then hosts Little Miami on Dec. before playing their first SBC game at New Richmond on Dec. 6.

An experienced roster returns for Clermont Northeastern in 2013-14 to usher in the Darnell Parker era as the Rockets look to build upon the knowledge gained by much of the lineup who played as underclassmen. “A lot of these guys are coming back after playing some extensive minutes on varsity as sophomores,” Parker explained. “Guys coming back haven’t had a ton of success, but they’ve been through it and we’re ready to get going again.” The Rockets are led by senior guard and First Team All-Southern Buckeye Conference selection Jay Teaney. Teaney scored 16.3 points per game as a junior for the Rockets and he will have a host of upperclassmen to round out a formidable Rocket offense.

We want to dictate on defense the same way we dictate on offense. We want to do it our way.” In the SBC-National, in which the Rockets finished 4-6 last year and in solo fourth, Parker believes his team can contend for a title. “Obviously, until someone knocks off Georgetown, they’re the team to beat,” he said. “But honestly, I don’t see us behind anyone else in the conference.”

Healthy Lady Warriors have high expectations
Lady Cards to use athleticism, speed to offset lack of height BY CHRIS CHANEY Sun staff
The Felicity-Franklin Lady Cardinals have high expectations heading into the 2013-14 season as eight varsity players return from a team that went 14-8 in 2012-13, including leading scorer Ashley Moore. “We lost two seniors, both starters, but we do have a lot coming back,” head coach Kerry Stamper said. “We don’t have a lot of height, but we never have, so we’re working with (what we have). We have a lot of speed and play with a lot of intensity, so we’re banking on that.” Of the two seniors that the Lady Cards lost, Arica Stutz was their most well-rounded player, averaging just under 13 points, 10 rebounds and 6 blocks a night.
Stamper said that while they won’t be able to duplicate Stutz’s presence down low, they still have enough weapons to offset her loss. Kerry Stamper “Ashley Moore is going to be one of our big scorers,” Stamper said. “Brooke Corbin, when she’s on, she hits well. We have a few that will have bring on their offensive game and they’re working that way. “Kelsey Arkenau should be a little better in her offensive game and Brittany Drake, another sophomore, should help.”

Felicity-Franklin brings back the same roster as last year, save for two graduated seniors. What the Lady Cardinals lack in size, they hope to mask with pressure defense and quick transition points.
On the defensive end, Stamper wants to use her team’s speed and athleticism to make things difficult for the opposing team’s guards and turn those mistakes into easy buckets. “We want to get some quick steals, but we are mostly man-toman unless we have a lot of height to contend with and we have to double team,” she said. Undoubtedly, Felicity will come up against some taller teams this season, but Stamper said that if the fast-break points aren’t there, she’s working with her team to develop discipline and run the offense. “I preach patience and to let the offense work,” the coach said. “When they’re patient, the offense usually pulls through and gets us an easy basket.” Finishing as runners-up last year in the Southern Buckeye
Conference’s National Division, Stamper predicted that her team will once again be among the best teams in the league. “I think we’re going to be pretty strong, especially in our smaller (division),” Stamper said. “Georgetown is usually our biggest competition, but I’m looking forward to it and I think we should be pretty strong this year.” Like Stamper said, Georgetown was the Lady Cardinals’ bugaboo last year, handing Felicity their only two losses of the season in conference play as well as acting as their ticket out of the postseason in the Division III sectional final game. The Lady Cardinals will get right into conference play, hosting CNE in their season opener and will play five of their first six games against divisional opponents.

Familiarity and health are the two aspects of the Goshen Lady Warriors’ recipe that haven’t meshed in previous seasons, but heading into the 2013-14 campaign, head coach Dave Mason is excited about what he’s seen in the preseason. “First of all, (Hannah) Owens and (Becca) Davidson, my two senior post players, are healthy at the same time,” Mason explained. “Last year, I didn’t have Davidson at the beginning, we got one game, then Owens went down, so having that senior leadership and post presence, I’m looking forward to that. “The junior class, a lot of them have had varsity experience all three years that they’ve been here, so there is a familiarity where they know what I want. “If nothing else, I’ve seen the

Felicity-Franklin working hard under new coach, installing new system
Glen Este gears up for long-awaited year BY CHRIS CHANEY Sun staff
O D D
There is no better time than the present for the Glen Este Trojans as coach Dave Caldwell’s squad returns four varsity starters who have been playing at the highest level since their sophomore season. “We don’t have a lot new,” Caldwell said. “We have those four returning starters — Tyler Burdick, Tyler Flanigan, Kyle Keszei and Logan Harris — so this is the year we’ve been looking towards for a while and hopefully with the rest of the league not being as tall as they have been the last couple years, we’re hoping to make some noise in the league.” All four of those returning starters were among the top seven scorers last season and Caldwell expects junior Zach Jones to step
up into one of the spots vacated by one of the four seniors who graduated last year. Playing in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference, the Trojans go up against some of the best talent in the area, but with such a strong season last year thanks to many upperc l a s s m e n Dave Caldwell who have since moved on, Caldwell expects his squad to move its way up the standings from their seventh-place finish last year. “I’d like to think we’re one of the top three (teams in the ECC),” Caldwell said. “It’s going to be a

Glen Este hopes to take advantage of an Eastern Cincinnati Conference that does not boast the height of year’s past and the Trojans plan to use their strong guard play to speed up opponents.
dogfight. Kings returns a ton of people, Loveland returns a ton of people, Milford has a few good guys back, Turpin has the best player in the league (Zach McCormick), Anderson’s got a really good sophomore class and Walnut Hills has acquired quite a few new players, so it’ll be wide open, I think.” The good news for the Trojans in such a deep league is that while they may not have the most height around, they didn’t necessary lose any trees to graduation. As such, Glen Este can continue to build
upon what they’ve been working on in recent years schematically. “We’re not going to do much different from the past,” Caldwell said. “Our big goal this year is to cut down our turnovers. That’s been an Achilles heel for us the past few seasons. We’re a lot older and wiser and at the same time stronger physically, so I look for us to get a lot more shot attempts.” The Trojans will begin their season on Nov. 30 at Mariemont and get right into conference play the following week when they host defending conference champions Walnut Hills.

Sandker got in with his team and began to implement his system and has been impressed with the work ethic shown by his young team in the preseason. “We’ve gotten the hard work and the effort down and I think the execution is coming,” he said. “They’re blending well together, but I knew the hard work would have to come before the execution, so it’s good to get that out of the way and that way it’s always there.” Sandker has demanded a lot of

BY CHRIS CHANEY Sun staff

“Julia will take over Brooke’s spot (at point

guard) and then we have a freshman (Haylee Foster) who’s very talented, but just doesn’t have varsity experience. Originally, Fallis wanted to press full-court more this year, but current situations have dictated that the Lady Cards fall back into

more of a half-court defense, occasionally resorting to playing zone. Still, Fallis has seen “tremendous improvement” from the first few weeks of practice to the cusp of the season.

Bulldogs’ eclectic roster breeds high expectations
Lions hope to reverse recent trends in ‘13-14 BY CHRIS CHANEY Sun staff

30 at St. Bernard.
