Barons hoping for another winning season BY RICHARD CRAWFORD Sun staff

Randy Hospelhorn begins his second season as the head coach at Amelia. The Barons last year experienced their first winning season in several years sporting a 6-4 overall mark and 2-2 (third place) in the Southern Buckeye Conference American (SBC-A) Division. The Blue and White lost 14 letterman and have the return of just one-half dozen (a total of four were starters). “The kids are working very hard. We will have many of the team playing both ways because the pay to participate has really hurt us. Our numbers are down to about half of what we’ve had,” said Hospelhorn. He does see encouraging signs among his charges. “The offensive line has potential and these are the

most dedicated players I’ve ever had. They had a successful off-season. They worked hard the entire time.” The all-conference stars returning to the Amelia lineup includes Aaron Robinson and Cameron Wisby. The graduated all-leaguers are Zac Hultz, Marc McDonald, Scotty Weaver, Tanner Owens and John McDonald. Hospelhorn singled out some of his most prospective impressive performers – senior tight end and defensive end Aaron Robinson, junior center and defensive end Austin Miller, senior fullback Cameron Wisby, senior defensive back Tyler Hale, junior quarterback Gabe Weaver, senior offensive lineman Ian Stewart, and senior offensive and defensive lineman and placekicker Robbie Janson. Robinson was selected to play in the Blue-Gray Super Combine game. He was one

We expect to be competitive in the league, our problem is our lack of numbers and depth, but I

know these kids want to be here having to pay to play,” said the Blue and White’s head coach who expects New Richmond’s Lions, Western Brown’s Broncos and Goshen’s Warriors to be the toughest teams his squad will face in the SBC-A.

Wildcats one of county’s most improved teams

Williamsburg’s returning lettermen are, front row from left, Brandon Ilg, Joey Clowerey, Jacob Edmisten, and Dakota Doss; second row, Jacob Reed, Jordan Smith, Michael Posey, and Anthony Young. BY RICHARD CRAWFORD Sun staff Williamsburg is expected to be one of the county’s most improved squads. A total of 10 lettermen returned at ‘Burg with the loss of one dozen. In the Southern Buckeye Conference a year ago the Wildcats enjoyed an overall 82 record and the Blue and White was runner-up in the National Division with a 3-1 slate. From that team, Williamsburg has returning allstars who are Anthony Young,

Jacob Edmisten, Joey Clowerey, and Michael Posey. Graduated are all-stars Billy Hickey, Cody Wiedemann, Kevin Keeton, and Dane Weeks. “This is a well-disciplined team and a strong team up front,” said co-head coach Trevor Foster, himself a former football star for the Wildcats. “We’ve got good senior leadership at quarterback and we can throw the ball some and we’re very strong defensively, especially the linebackers. We have nine seniors back on our defense.”

Scott Lefker is the other ‘Burg co-head coach and another former Wildcat star on the gridiron during his prep career. Foster sees his charges’ weakness as their youth. “We’re inexperienced on the outside,” he said. Lefker and Foster have some good talent to build his squad around – senior quarterback Jacob Edmisten, senior tailback Joey Clowerey, senior tight end and linebacker Anthony Young, sophomore offensive linemen and defensive end Jacob Reed, and junior middle linebacker and center Michael Posey. In analyzing the National Division race, Foster said that Batavia is a lot stronger and Blanchester is going to be improved. “Defensively, if we play like we expect, we can be as strong as last year. Our goal is to win every football game, but the league’s going to be tough,” he said.

Batavia boasts experienced varsity squad BY RICHARD CRAWFORD Sun staff

Batavia could quite possibly be the most experienced varsity football squad in the county. New Batavia head coach Don Sizer welcomes the return of 18 gridders who lettered last season for a team that was 2-8 overall and 0-4 in the Southern Buckeye Conference National (SBC-N) Division. Returning SBC-N all-stars include Gabe Archer, Ryan Gormley, Nick Bonavita, and Zainn Ison. Only one conference allstar was among the eight Bulldogs who graduated, David Brausch. Sizer, the new leader of the Bulldogs, had previously been successful as the head honcho on the gridiron at fellow Southern Buckeye members, Bethel-Tate and Western Brown. “Our team has experience and good size,” said Sizer of his ‘Dogs. “The team is now learning a new system and learning to fill in the spots left open by

Senior leaders will lead Bethel-Tate Tigers to victory BY RICHARD CRAWFORD Sun staff

Former Bethel-Tate three-sport star Wayne Stacy returns for his second season as the head football coach at his alma mater. He also serves as the school’s athletic director. One dozen Tigers who lettered last season are back from a team that was 1-9 overall and 1-3 in the Southern Buckeye Conference American (SBC-A) Division. A total of nine were lost from that team. The veterans back for another season are SBC-A all-stars David Hammock, Erik Shinkle, Zach Mullins, and Matt Small. “We have experience at every position and a solid group of good senior leaders. We have eight offensive starters back and seven defensive starters,” said Stacy. “We have good team speed and good talent at the skills positions.” He cautioned, “We don’t

running back Zack Mullins, senior offensive lineman Taylor Colwell, and senior wide receiver and cornerback Matt Small. His head coach said Mullins is one of Bethel-Tate’s all-time leading rushers. “We expect to be extremely competitive, but the league is going to be pretty tough. We have several really good teams in

our league this year. All the teams should be improved. Among this number he singled out Goshen’s Warriors, New Richmond’s Lions, and Western Brown’s Broncos and added Amelia’s Barons will have a “solid” squad. “We’re absolutely going to be an improved team because of our good senior leadership,” Stacy said.

said he has picked up everything quickly. This collection of talent will look to utilize their speed to keep their 5 wide receiver spread offense moving very quickly. “We just want to score as fast as possible to win the game,” Dreyer said. “Everytime we get the ball we’re looking to score as fast as possible. We’re not going to huddle, we’re not going to wait for the defense. They’re not going to dictate to us, we’re going to dictate what we do the entire game.” Once again it will the seniors who will look to lead the way for the Broncos defense. Led by senior safety Haggerty, senior middle linebacker Howard, senior defensive lineman White, safety Woodyard and junior safety Brady Brooks, the defense will make up for its lack of size by being aggressive. Using various coverages, blitzes, angles and lanes, the Broncos will try mix things up for opposing offenses. The key will be to stop the run. If they don’t, Broncos defensive coordinator Jerry Comello said it could lead to some long nights. But they do have the advantage of being in the complicated 3-3-5 system for the second year and are feeling more comfortable. “It’s a complicated defense,” Comello said. “Our players are picking it up. It’s our second year we’re running it so we’re a little more versed in it. Last year we installed it and everything was new, just the terminology, where they lined up in certain formations. This year we already had a good foundations so we were just able to roll with what we did last year.” Dreyer said he thinks this year’s SBC American Division title will probably come down to the Broncos week four game against New Richmond, who won the league last season. “Week four I’m going to go into it looking as it’s our championship,” Dreyer said. “They came out in the paper and said they were the best conditioned team. (That) they were in the league title the last four years. The past is the past. This is the present. This is the year of 2011 where it’s going to be us vs. them, week four. We’re excited. That’s the game where we’re going to their place and it should be exciting. We have to play well.”

Bronco seniors look to take next step By Andrew Wyder The Brown County Press

Speed and aggression will be the key for the Western Brown Broncos to be successful this season. The Broncos plan to use their speed to their advantage to make sure that they are the ones who are dictating play. “Defensively we have to rally to the football,” Broncos coach Evan Dreyer said. “We’re finally playing the same defense for the last two years and now we’re getting to the point where we

Offensively, we just have to make sure we’re limiting our turnovers and playing as fast as possible and getting the ball out to our playmakers.” Coming off of an injury riddled 6-4 season, the Broncos senior class is determined to win and make it to the playoffs. Their leadership will play an important role in helping the team reach its goals. “They were 0-9 as freshman,” Dreyer said of the senior class. “They’re striving for excellence within our program. They got a little taste of success when we won our last couple of games and now they want more success.” And those seniors will have a big impact on both sides of the ball for the Broncos. The offense will be led by senior quarterback Woodyard, who stepped in for the injured Matt Corcoran last season and led the Broncos to a 6-2 finish while passing for a school record 2,256 yards and 26 touchdowns while adding 733 yards and five more touchdowns on the ground. However, last season’s Southern Buckeye Conference

A key for the Western Brown defense will be to rally to the ball carrier. Here they do just that during the Broncos scrimmage with Glen Este.

American Division Player of the Year is hardly the only talented player returning on the Broncos offense. The unit will be buoyed by a senior laden offensive line. All five starters are senior returners. Joining Woodyard at the skill positions are a handful of returning players. Juniors Gunner Woodyard and Jake Lawson will look to return to their high level of play after

missing parts, or most, of last season due to injuries. Lining up on the outside will be senior receiver Zaine Clark. He is the Broncos leading returning receiver and will be moving to the outside receiver position after spending last season in the slot. Newcomer Mike Lindsey, a senior, is a speed burner who will help out at receiver. Despite never playing before, Dreyer

New coach will turn the Rockets around BY RICHARD CRAWFORD Sun staff

Clermont Northeastern has a new head coach to help turn the Rockets’ varsity football program around. Jason Conley is the new head coach and he has seven returning lettermen to help him lead the Rockets’ reversal of fortune. A total of 16 players who lettered last season graduated. A trio of the returnees were Southern Buckeye Conference National (SBCN) Division all-star performers in 2010. They are Aaron Wright, Tyler Chambers, and Chad Cousino. Among the graduates were SBC-N all-stars Jacob Hacker, Tyler Berkshire, Kenny Thompson, and Cody Tidwell. Conley expects to see the program continue to get better. The Blue and Gold record over the last three years has concluded at 3-7, 2-8, and 4-6 (2-2 in the SBC-N last year). “We have quickness and some good experience and they work hard,” Conley said. “But we lost a lot of talent and some experience from last year.” A quartet of this year’s Blue and Gold Conley

ning back Dallas Miracle. “We’re going to build off our strong finish of last year,” said Conley. “We are going to continue to get better. We’re a very talented team that needs to continue to work on developing. “East Clinton won the league last year and they’ll be good again this year. Williamsburg will be tough and Batavia is more experienced and will be tougher,

too.” His charges will have to face squads from the American Division of the Southern Buckeye that has the larger schools, but he expects his squad to be competitive. He foresees New Richmond’s Lions, Western Brown’s Broncos and Goshen's Warriors to be the best of the other division and that the Amelia Barons “will be tougher,” too.

New Richmond is an early on selection to be a serious contender in the Southern Buckeye Conference American Division (SBC-A) Division. The Lions won that varsity football championship a year ago. A total of 10 lettermen are returning from a squad that last year was 7-3 overall and 4-0 in the conference race. Among those 10 veterans back in the fold are SBC-A all-stars Danny Scholz, Jake Gundler, Nick Hill, Jake Glueck, and Derrick Dillow. The graduated all-stars are Nick Williams, Garrett Myers, Austin Warden, Joey McCabe, Marty Mahaffey, and Isaac Stroud. “I think one of the good things about this team is the camaraderie among the players. They enjoy each other a lot and they work together very well,” said Dan Scholz, head coach of the Lions. “We have good skill kids back on offense and experience at linebacker and in the secondary.” He cautioned, “We have young lineman on both the offense and the defense, but they’re learning. 2011 F OOTBALL P REVIEW - P AGE 19

Led by new coach and seniors, Fayetteville looks to build upon first varsity season By Andrew Wyder The Brown County Press The Fayetteville Rockets are excited as they head into their second varsity season on the gridiron. New coach Harley McCullough, who had the interim coach tag removed when he was approved as the new Rockets coach August 12, has watched as his young team has gotten better each day. “Each week I’ve been coming out here and I’ve seen improvements,” he said, “and that’s exactly what I want to see in our program.” McCullough took over for Ben Brisker who resigned in July. He has been the offensive and defensive line coach the past two seasons and will have a handful of veterans to lead the young squad. Seniors Tanner Williams, Luke Allen, Joey Burwinkel, Dave Kranz and Jarrod Linsey all return from last season’s 2-8 first varsity season. All five will once again play a big part in the Rocket’s success, which they hope will include reaching the playoffs and posting a winning record. Each senior will play both ways, offensively and defensively for a squad short on numbers and experience. Though the numbers have improved, with 32 players on the roster this season, the Rockets will be a team heavy with freshman and sophomores. It makes the play of the 10 upperclassmen that much

more important. It also requires that the seniors be role models on and off the field. “We’ve got five seniors and they need to be the leaders out here,” McCullough said. Offensively, the Rockets return quite a few starters from last season. Williams returns to quarterback the offense with Allen back at receiver, Burwinkle back at tackle, Kranz back at fullback and Lindsey back at tailback. They are joined by returning junior guard Nate Allen and sophomore center Ethan Wolfer. Though McCullough has made few changes from last season, he has tinkered some with the offense with a veteran lineup back. “We’ll have a little power, a little pass...a little option” he said. “That’s why we have some things we did last year and things we’re adding as new wrinkles. Hopefully we’ll be hard to prepare for.” The Rockets will have new leadership on the defensive side of the ball. Nathan Geers, who was hired the second week of August to be a full time assistant from Pickerington, has taken over the defense for the Rockets. “We let him come in and take over the defense and that was good,” McCullough said of Geers. “We lost Ben (Brisker) and he was our defensive coach so Nathan’s our defensive coordinator. He’s been a good influence and got the defense fired up.”

Despite a lack of size, the Rockets worked hard in the weight room to get stronger and to get faster. McCullough and Geers will look to use that speed and added strength on defense as they will be aggressive. “We’re calling it a 3-4 but we walk that backer up so it’s like a 4-3,” McCullough said. “But we’re coming at you.” The seniors will play a big role on the Rockets defense as well. Williams returns at safety along with Allen while Lindsey returns to linebacker and Kranz will return as an outside linebacker/defensive end hybrid. Burwinkle will rotate in on the defensive line. In addition, juniors David Watts and Kyle Feck will see their first football action at cornerback this season. So far the duo’s play has pleased the coaches. Though McCullough and Geers are the only staff coaches for the Rockets, they will have help. Jr. high coaches Steve Shaw and Jim Allessi will help out as will volunteer coaches Dave and Don Wolfer. The Rockets will kick off the 2011 season on the road at Notre Dame (Portsmouth) on Saturday, August 27 at 7:00 p.m. And they will play their first home game at their own facility at Fayetteville (they played home games last season at Goshen) on September 9 when they host Williamsburg.

Just nine of the 31 players who earned a varsity letter at Glen Este last year are back for another season of action from a squad that was 4-6 overall and 2-3 in the Fort Ancient Valley Conference East Division (FAVC-E). Zach Taylor, head coach of the Trojans, said, “We have a lot of skilled kids back like at running back and defensive back, but the front seven on both sides of the line are new and we also lack depth.” He also pointed out the new pay to play policy has really hurt the numbers out for the teams and that depth will be another factor the Purple and White will have Glen Este’s returning lettermen are, front row from left, Tyler Burdick, Alec Scardina, Heath Blandford, to overcome.

Bronco seniors look to take next step By Andrew Wyder The Brown County Press

O D D

Speed and aggression will be the key for the Western Brown Broncos to be successful this season. The Broncos plan to use their speed to their advantage to make sure that they are the ones who are dictating play. “Defensively we have to rally to the football,” Broncos coach Evan Dreyer said. “We’re finally playing the same defense for the last two years and now we’re getting to the point where we

know what we’re doing and getting lined up and playing fast and downhill. Offensively, we just have to make sure we’re limiting our turnovers and playing as fast as possible and getting the ball out to our playmakers.” Coming off of an injury riddled 6-4 season, the Broncos senior class is determined to win and make it to the playoffs. They are led by senior captains Nick Woodyard, Jordan Haggerty, Spencer Howard, Coty Weiss and Andrew White. The rest of the seniors on this

year’s Bronco roster: Mike Lindsey, Zaine Clark, Jake Latham, Collin Bellini, Kevin Mccoy, Sean Massey, Peyton Baily, Rich Burton, Brian Traylor, Daniel Lewis, Cody Wedmore, Zach Wilson and Josh Morrison.

“We have good team speed and good talent at the skills positions.” He cautioned, “We don’t

have huge numbers. This is our biggest challenge. We can’t afford injuries.” Stacy expects to build his turnaround season around the talents of senior offensive lineman David Hammock, senior quarterback Erik Shinkle, senior

running back Zack Mullins, senior offensive lineman Taylor Colwell, and senior wide receiver and cornerback Matt Small.
