Adkins In a joint investigation between the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Adams County Sheriff's Office, Manchester Police Department and the Aberdeen Police department a thief is now behind bars.

Kyle A. Adkins, 21, of Blue Creek, has been charged with theft. The investigation was started when an Ohio State Trooper Pete Edgington was investigating a crash that had occurred on Roush Hill Rd., just south of Cabin Creek, on Monday, July 22. A 2006 Chevrolet Aveo had crashed a landed on its side. The driver had fled the scene on foot before authorities arrived on scene. The car is reported stolen out of Aberdeen by Chief Greg Caudill. The Manchester Police Department is investigating a stolen Ford Van from Terry Ayres, of Manchester. The van was located near Pumpkin Ridge Rd. BCI was called and performed an investigation and took prints off the vehicles. During this past week Adkins has been lodged in the Adams County Jail. Authorities have reason to believe that Adkins has also stolen a vehicle and broke into several vehicles causing damage.

Perfect Police Work Adams County Communications received an alarm drop from the Adams County Recycling Center Late Thursday evening, July 25. Deputy Mike Estep arrived on scene and set up a perimeter and called for Manchester and Seaman K9 Units to respond to the scene. In the meantime West Union Police Officer Wenz responded to assist. The Day God Took You Home A million times I've needed you A million times I've cried, If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died. In life I loved you dearly, In death I love you still. In my heart you hold a place, No one else can ever fill. It broke my heart to lose you, but you didn't go alone Part of me went with you, The day God took you home. -Author Unknown Sadly missed by your wife Annabelle and family.

Bridge Jumper lands on Man Floating in Raft A Montana man floating on an inner tube suffered broken bones in his legs and torn ligaments in his knees when another man jumped from a bridge and landed on him. The man and his wife were floating under the bridge on the Clark Fork River when the man landed on him. The guy just kept apologizing saying 'I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry,'" he said. The man swam to shore, still on the inner tube and the man's friend helped him as well. He will likely spend the rest of the summer in a wheelchair or on crutches, according to reports. The man responded with a sense of humor regarding the incident, "Who does this happen to? I don't know of anybody this has ever happened to." Montana authorities say the man who jumped could be charged.

Woman Arrested for Shooting at Car that Backed in Driveway A 72-year-old is accused of shooting multiple times at a family attempting to back up in her driveway of her home in Tennessee. The incident happened when a family and their five kids were on their way home to Virginia after vacationing in Kingsport, Tennessee and got lost. The road was narrow and he was forced to back up the Chevy Tahoe in the driveway, which had a "no trespassing" sign. During that split-second turnaround, the elderly woman allegedly started shooting her .22 caliber rifle at the car from her porch. The driver said, "My boy yelled 'Has she got a gun?' as I hear the woman yelling." According to reports, one bullet hit the the running board on the passenger side of his car, just a few feet from where his five children, ages 4-12, were sitting. The elderly woman admitted firing the shots and mentioned to police that she had a problem with people tearing up her driveway. She was arrested on seven counts of Felony Reckless Endangerment.

Can you believe it’s almost August already? This year is going so fast! Just bear in mind, this is usually the hottest month of the year and if the past couple of weeks has been any indication of what is to come, we could be in big trouble! While there isn’t too much we can do about the weather, other than complain, all too soon frost will be “nipping at our nose” and we will be again wishing it was warm! Oh my! In the meanwhile, try to stay cool and hydrated, wear loose-fitting light-colored clothing and don’t overwork yourself outside. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can happen to anyone but the elderly can be more susceptible and one way to beat the heat is to come in to the Senior Center (the old hospital) anytime to watch a movie on our big screen TV, play cards, work a puzzle, learn a new craft or relearn an old familiar one, use our exercise equipment (with doctors consent of course), or just visit with us. We welcome you to visit and offer suggestions on how we can serve you. We hope you visit soon. It’s that time again for Manchester Kinfolk Landing Days on August 2-4. The Grand Parade will be Saturday, August 3, beginning at noon. There will be lots of contests, games, live entertainment and other activities, including fireworks, so come on down, bring the family and enjoy the festivities! Mark your calendar…The North Adams Senior Club will

have their special carry-in dinner/meeting or “picnic month” on August 6th at 6:00pm at the Seaman Community Building. Any senior 60+ is welcome to attend, even if you are not a member! Just bring a covered dish, treat or any other “goodies” and enjoy food, fun and fellowship. This special picnic will have great entertainment, door prizes and lots of fun so please try to come and bring a friend!! Congratulations to Jean Storms of Winchester who won our door prize, handcrafted by Wanda Sue Boling, during the Adams County Fair last week! HEAP SUMMER CRISIS PROGRAM Summer Crisis Program will continue through August 31, 2013. Income guidelines are set at 175% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines and other restrictions apply. Applicants who may be eligible for an air conditioner unit must schedule an appointment. For more information please call the Adams County HEAP Office 1800-233-7891 beginning on June 17, 2013. Does life seem scary sometimes? Well, you are not alone. Fear is a human thing. Every one of us, at one time or another is afraid of the unknown. It seems the older we get and the more difficult it is to do thing for ourselves, like we used to do, the easier it is to find time for worry and anxiety. While that may be normal, if we allow fear to get the upper hand, that’s when it

truly becomes unhealthy. Fear can make us tense, irritable and unhappy. It can interfere greatly with our everyday lives. One way to keep worry and/or fear from getting the best of you is to face it head-on and learn what you can to help you deal with it. If there is something you can change to control or overcome your fear, then do it. If you can’t, worry isn’t going to help one bit. Think about it, most of the time the things what we are so fearful of and stress our about, don’t even happen. Remember, life consists of just one day at a time. The past can be nice to remember but don’t brood over or second guess what might have been. The future is nice to look forward to but not to worry about what may or may not happen. Today, this moment, is really enough to deal with—so make the most of it. How long has it been since you’ve been to the Senior Center? We are here to serve YOU and we certainly enjoy your smiling faces and fellowship. We have various activities going on and you are welcome to get involved. We are always open to your suggestions and/or ideas on how to make your Senior Center a better place. We look forward to seeing you soon! JUST A THOUGHT. Life's problems wouldn't be called "hurdles" if there wasn't a way to get over them. ~Author Unknown

Good News for Soybean Producers Phytophthora root and stem rot cost soybean producers over $250 million per year in lost soybean yields. Researchers at Purdue have recently announced that they have identified two genes that are resistant to Phytophthora root and stem rot. This discovery could lead to new cultivars that are able to perform better in soils with this problem. It is a soil borne disease. From what I can gather from talking to UK State Tobacco Specialists, the Ohio Valley and Kentucky are not believed to be threatened by the Pennsylvania

find, but the eastern part of Kentucky and Ohio could be threatened. There is no longer a forecasting center for blue mold. As I have stated before, the use of Quadris as a preventative for target spot is recommended once the tobacco gets too big to cultivate. This can be applied over the top with a hi-boy. It is NOT recommended to mix the fungicide with other pesticides and the

mercial pesticide license to apply ANY pesticide. This includes things that can be bought without a license like common weed killer or bug sprays. For more information about the requirements you can read online at http://pested.osu.edu or call the Ohio Department of Agriculture at 800-282-1955. plants completely fill in the area around the sign but after the flowers take root and spread he expects the sign welcoming folks to Adams Country to look great. The AC Master Gardeners have taken the Welcome Sign on as a work in progress and as one of their most visible projects to date. The plants are all native Adams County wildflowers and the Preserve has been in partnership with the Master Gardeners

on this project collecting plants which were selected by the EOA staff as the best represented and most beautiful for the sign. Future plantings at the Welcome Sign are planned as more native wildflowers become available. The Adams County Welcome Sign was a project carried out by the Adams County Travel & Visitors Bureau in 2007 with generous donations provided by individuals and local businesses.

The Brown County Master Gardener - The Joys and Woes of Growing Tomatoes By Faye Mahaffey, OSUE Brown County Master Gardener This is a very exciting time of the year in the vegetable garden. Tomato plants are mostly growing well and have started to set fruit. I have pulled out the “tomato map” so that we will know which Heirloom tomato we are eating. As I made my rounds in the garden at 6:30 a.m. this morning I had to tuck tomato stems back into the cages that were trying to escape. One of the tomato plants had some missing stems and leaves but I couldn’t find any sign of a Tobacco Hornworm. Maybe my birds are helping me out! Other things on the tomatoes are growing well too. The leaf spot diseases have been enjoying the warm, humid weather most of the state has experienced for the past few weeks. On July 17 I received an emergency issue of the OSUE VegNet that informed growers that Tomato Late Blight had been found in heirloom tomatoes in Wayne County. Even though we are currently experiencing very hot conditions that do not favor late blight as cool, rainy conditions do, last week was very conducive to this disease and next week is expected to be a bit cooler. James Jasinski warned us to scout our potatoes and tomatoes regularly (at least twice per week) for late blight. This is a fungal disease that infects quickly and can infect all above ground parts of the tomato plant. Rapid fungal development is usually enhanced by humidity and rainfall. This disease creates brown, water soaked, or greasy lesions on stems, leaves and fruit. Management of this disease is very important. The OSU Extension Fact Sheet (HYG-3102-95), “Late Blight of Potato and Tomato”, can be found at ohioline.osu.edu and provides some tips on preventing this fungus from destroying your potato and tomato crop. It is time to start a protectant fungicide spraying program on a 7 – 10 day schedule. Fungicides such as chlorothalonil, EBDCs and copper-based products can be used under conditions not favorable for late blight and a 5 – 7 day schedule under favorable conditions if late blight has not been detected in the area. These fungicides also have activity against early blight, but chlorothalonil is the most effective of the three active ingredients against late blight. As always, read all labels thoroughly and follow directions carefully! For current recommendations you can also consult the Ohio Vegetable Production Guide (OSUE Bulletin 672). As I started my research for this article, I pulled my Tomato folder and was amazed at the variety of leaf spot diseases that present a challenge to our precious tomato plants. Many of these leaf spot diseases can mimic each other in their early stages of development.

Earlier this month, a tomato grower was informed that his plants had become infected with Septoria leaf spot. Although the symptoms may appear on the leaves and stems at any stage of plant development, they usually become evident after plants have begun to set fruit. In some cases the disease can be so severe that it defoliates the entire plant in a growing season. This disease produces lesions that are usually brown, circular, and small with a yellow halo. Fungal fruiting bodies known as pycnidia can be seen usually in the middle of the mature lesion as tiny, black dots. Septoria starts on the lower leaves and works its way up the plant. OSUE Fact Sheet (HYG-3112-96), Septoria Leaf Spot of Tomatoes, provides suggestions on prevention and treatment of this common fungal disease and can be found at ohioline.osu.edu. Next week I will finish up the nasty list of diseases that threaten our tomato crops. If you would like to do a little extra reading about tomatoes you can read the OSUE Fact Sheet (HYG-1624-10), Growing Tomatoes in the Home Garden, and learn more about Hybrids and Heirlooms, spacing, staking, and some special problems with tomatoes such as Blossom-End Rot, Catfacing, and Black Walnut Toxicity. The growing season continues to zoom along. Have you noticed any Burning Bushes starting to turn red? My Blackberry lilies are in full bloom and that doesn’t usually happen until late August! The daylilies continue to provide bursts of color in spite of the soaring temperatures. Yes…I am still stopping at every single cultivar and marveling at their beauty. Don’t forget to email your gardening questions to OSUE Brown County Master Gardener, Mike Hannah, at mhannah2@msn.com. A Master Gardener will be at the Georgetown OSUE office on Wednesdays from 1:00 to 3:00 if you would like to stop by with a gardening question or problem.

Cuffs & Collars Field reports from ODNR Division of Wildlife Officers Southeast Ohio During the 2011 Ohio deer season, Wildlife Officer Roby Williams received several TIP reports of poaching occurring in the southwest portions of Guernsey County. Officer Williams and Wildlife Officer Field Supervisor Bryan Postlethwait began an investigation into the complaints. During the course of the investigation it was discovered that a suspect illegally harvested six deer, including four bucks. He was issued six summonses in Cambridge Municipal Court. Three others were charged in the investigation, and more than $1,300 in fines and court costs were paid by the defendants. The suspect forfeited the shotgun used in the incident and lost his hunting license for two years. Southwest Ohio Wildlife Officer Ryan Schock, assigned to Hamilton County, received a call in April from the Colerain Township Police Department regarding someone shooting geese out of season. Officer Schock responded to the address and noticed a small pond with three dead geese floating in it. He interviewed the complainants and they

stated that they saw their neighbor standing on the bank of the pond shooting at geese with a small-caliber rifle. Officer Schock then collected the dead geese and noticed they had wounds consistent with a small-caliber rifle. While walking along the bank of the pond, Officer Schock found three untagged traps that were set on muskrat holes. The traps and dead geese were collected as evidence. Officer Schock then interviewed neighbors that lived near the suspect and they stated that they had heard shots in the past or have seen the suspect shooting at geese. When Officer Schock made contact with the suspect a few days later, and the suspect was found in violation upon further investigation. Officer Schock asked him about the untagged traps, and the suspect stated that his neighbor, who was pulling out of his driveway at the time, had set the traps to catch muskrats in the pond. Officer Schock stopped the

neighbor and interviewed him about the traps. He acknowledged that the traps were his and that he knew they were supposed to be tagged. Both men were cited and pleaded guilty in Hamilton County Municipal Court. The man that shot the geese paid $204 in fines and court costs for shooting geese out of season, and the man with the untagged traps paid $154 in fines and court costs. Northeast Ohio While working the deer gun season State Wildlife Officer Tom Frank, assigned to Mahoning County, observed a man sitting in a tree stand after legal hunting hours wearing only camouflage clothing. He approached the hunter and asked him to unload his shotgun and climb down from the stand. Officer Frank inspected the firearm and determined that it was unplugged. Unfortunately, the man was also unable to produce a hunting license or deer permit when asked. He stated that he was an avid hunter in years past, although the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s license system indicated otherwise. He was charged with four wildlife violations, convicted in court and paid over $530 in fines and court costs.
