Traffic fatality update
According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Crash Statistics website, Brown County has had one fatal crash resulting in one death during the time period of January 1 through March 31, 2014. In comparison, we had two fatal crashes responsible for two deaths for the same time period in 2013, so perhaps we are moving in a positive direction to reduce traffic deaths in our county. On another positive note, our injury crashes and property damage only crashes also appear to be down in the first part of this year (we have had 49 injury crashes so far this year, in comparison with 69 injury crashes for the same time last year). So—let’s all work together to continue this downward trend of deadly crashes. How can you help to make Brown County roads safer? One big step is to “Put It Down” and “Stay Alive— Don’t Text and Drive”. Our relatively new law prohibiting texting and the use of mobile communications devices like cell phones and navigation systems while driving addresses the fact that distracted driving remains a big problem on our roads. Do your part—please take some personal responsibility and don’t use that cell phone while driv-

ing—and ask your loved ones and friends to also “Put It Down”. Also, don’t drink and then drive, and don’t drive when you’re drowsy. And remember-your buckled seat belt is the #1 defense against death and serious injury in most traffic crashes. So buckle up for every ride no matter how short of a ride or drive you take. Parents, remember that one of the leading factors for getting your kids and teens into the habit of always buckling up is you being a good role model and always buckling up yourself! Let’s all keep working together to make our roads safer for our kids and other loved ones in Brown County in 2014. The “Safe Communities” Program was developed through the Ohio Department of Public Safety to establish and/or expand community partnerships to create safer, healthier communities throughout Ohio. Hospice of Hope has been named a 2014 Hospice Honors recipient, a prestigious award recognizing hospices providing the best patient care as rated by the patient’s caregiver. Established by Deyta, this prestigious annual honor recognizes hospices that continuously provide the highest level of satisfaction through their care as measured from the caregiver’s point of view. Deyta used the Family Evaluation of Hospice Care (FEHC) survey results from more than 1,700 partnering hospice agencies contained in Deyta’s FEHC database with an evaluation period of October 2012 through September 2013. Deyta identified Hospice Honors recipients by evaluating hospices’ performance on a set of eighteen satisfaction indicator measures. The set of questions included only indicator measures,
omitting qualifying, leader and demographic questions. Individual hospice performance scores were aggregated for the evaluation period and were compared on a question-by-question basis to a national average score calculated from Deyta’s FEHC database. “We are thrilled to present Hospice Honors for the second year in a row. We are honored to serve such a dedicated industry, and we look forward to recognizing top performers each year for their hard work and dedication,” said Kevin Porter, President and CEO of Deyta. Hospice of Hope’s Kavin Cartmell, Executive Director, states “What an honor to be recognized for our outstanding care amongst our peers. Our staff shows great compassion and care for the work they do each and every day.”
