Water Requirements for Beef Cattle There have been times when livestock producers have had to deal with water issues for beef cattle. Some years we have had drought conditions that have limited the water, and a few years ago we had issues with local water providers had a pump and or electric problems that prevented water from being available for a few days. The water requirement for cattle varies depending on several factors. Of course, the size of the cattle is obvious when it comes to different requirements, but the temperature would also be a factor, as would the feed that is being fed. A high moisture feed like corn silage contains more water versus a dry feed for example. I have told students and young exhibitors that water is the most important nutrient for years in Quality Assurance programs. We are always concerned about the protein and energy in our feeds and the vitamin levels in our mineral program, but water is often overlooked. The following is a link to a very detailed factsheet that explains more about the water requirements for beef cattle. http://www.ianrpubs.unl.ed u/pages/publicationD.jsp?p ublicationId=1338 If you do not have the internet, stop by the OSU Extension Office, and we can print out a copy of this fact sheet for you. Please remember to call ahead. With limited staff, the offices unfortunately have to be closed from time to time when we are out doing programming. Call the Adams County Office at (937) 544-2339, Brown County Office at (937) 378-6716 or the Highland County Office at (937) 393-1918. The offices are closed from
DAVID DUGAN OSU EXTENSION SERVING ADAMS, BROWN AND HIGHLAND CO. noon until 12:30 for lunch. Soybean Aphid Update I have not heard of any reports from the local area from producers with Soybean Aphid problems, but that does not mean they are not here. The following is from the CORN newsletter this week, written by OSU Extension Specialists Ron Hammond and Andy Michel. We are receiving our first reports of soybean aphids reaching levels that require insecticide treatment in counties just south of Lake Erie. Mid-August is time of the summer when we normally see outbreaks in Ohio. Because of this, we would urge growers to check their soybean fields to see if aphids are reaching threshold levels. However, because the majority of reports indicate low population levels, we recommend that growers only treat fields that have been scouted and where thresholds of 250 aphids per plant are reached. See the fact sheet at http://ohioline.osu.edu/entfact/pdf/0037.pdf for further information. Tobacco Field Night I would like to remind tobacco producers that we will have a twilight tobacco field night on August 20 starting at 5 p.m. in the West Union area. The tour will include Dr. Kenny Seebold, UK Tobacco Specialist and some local farms. We will look at a new variety, some fungicide and insecticide performance on this year’s crop. Please call the local OSU Extension Office so we know how many to plan
for. We will have a meal at the conclusion sponsored by one of the chemical companies that produces one of the products that we will be looking at that night. The Adams County Office number is (937) 544-2339; Brown County (937) 378-6716; and Highland County (937) 3931918. Please call prior to the end of the day on August 16. Details about the location that we will meet will be given when you call in to register. Soybean Field Night Mark your calendar for September 12 for the Soybean Field Night. We will look at some different on farm work that has been done this year. Dr. Anne Dorrance, OSU Soybean Specialist will be part of the program. Please call one of the OSU Extension Offices at the numbers listed above by September 10. The program will be located in the Northern parts of Brown and Highland Counties. Farm Science Review Tickets The Farm Science Review will be on September 17-19 this year. We have tickets at the OSU Extension Offices in Adams, Brown and Highland Counties. The cost has increased this year, and I believe this is the first time in my tenure with OSU Extension. Trek Theater starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday, and is the ideal way to unwind and experience more Hocking Hills beauty after Paddle for the Battle.
Paddle for the Battle was launched in 2006 as a tribute to Connie Barbini, founder of Hocking Hills Adventures and the Hocking Valley Canoe Livery. Barbini ultimately lost her own 10-year-battle with breast cancer, however she and her family were well served by the Logan Cancer Support Group, as are so many other individuals and families in the southeast Ohio community. "We started Paddle for the Battle not only as a tribute to my mom," said Connie Barbini's son and event organizer, Shane Barbini, "But we want to honor everyone who is fighting or has fought cancer and let our visitors help us fight cancer by sustaining the important work of Logan Cancer Support Group." Located 40 miles south-
east of Columbus, Ohio, Hocking Hills region offers once-in-a-lifetime experiences that make every day feel like Saturday, with plenty of Admission: FREE activities. The region boasts a wide variety of affordable lodging, from camping, cabins and cottages to hotels and inns. In addition to hiking trails, parks and forests, the Hocking Hills is the zipline capital of the Midwest, with 50 ziplines being offered via three distinct guide services. Unique gift and antique shops, canoeing, horseback riding, golf, spas and more add to the allure of the Hocking Hills as the perfect place to unplug.
