to 5.6 percent in March. The unemployment rate for the state of Ohio in April was 5.3 percent, compared to 6.2 percent in March. According to the Ohio Department of Job and

Family Services, the unemployment rate fell in all 88 Ohio counties. The lowest rate was in Mercer County at 3.0 percent, and the highest was in Monroe County at 10.7 percent.

Monroe County is the only county in Ohio that had an April unemployment rate in double digits. Brown County had the 21st highest jobless rate in the state at 6.1 percent.

“Procedure for removal of village marshal”. Phillips said that Caudill was injured at another job on April 11. The document listing the charges given to council and Caudill reads; “Pursuant to ORC 737.171 I have reason to believe that as Chief of Police for the Village of Aberdeen, you are guilty of inefficiency, neglect of duty or nonfeasance for the following reasons: 1. Pursuant to ORC 737.15 you were required to become a resident of the Village of Aberdeen within six months of your appoint. You were appointed Chief of Police on September 19, 2012. Your final appointment pursuant to ORC 737.17 was on August 5, 2013. At all times since

your initial appoint, you have indicated your address to be (in) West Union. At no time has the Village waived the residency requirement by ordinance. Therefore, you are in violation of ORC 737.15. 2. You have failed to work since April 11, 2014. From that date until May 2, 2014 when you provided documentation from Beacon Orthopedic that you were unable to work, you failed to report to the Mayor you were not capable of performing your duties. Your injuries occurred outside of your employment with the Village of Aberdeen and have resulted in you neglecting your duties as Chief.”

anonymous author.” The report continues “I interviewed (the girlfriend) and reviewed text messages sent to her phone from Chance Smith’s phone which had been stolen from (her) wall locker....I also interviewed Chance Smith and took his statement. He has received two more threatening notes. All appear to be from the same notepad and similar handwriting. Neither party have an idea whom it might be.” MOPD Chief Bryan Mount said on April 18, 2013 that investigators later determined that it was Chance Smith himself who wrote the threats, possibly in

a bid for attention. Richard Ellison, the attorney for Smith’s parents, said the school district knew about the threats and the stress that Chance Smith was under for five days, yet did not contact his parents. “He was going through some hard times and could have used some help from his parents....but they were never told”, Ellison said. Michelle Smith further claimed in the suit that Cooper did not tell her “of the serious nature of the events of the preceeding days, her son’s actions, threats of physical harm to himself or others”, when she was called.

Norris said that the Head Start program has lead in efforts to improve comprehensive services to young children. “The outreach and training efforts of this program in Adams and Brown County have helped provide low income parents with the knowledge and service they need to provide for a sup-

portive environment for their children,” Norris added. “Please give us a call at ABCAP to learn more about the Head Start program and find out if your are eligible,” Norris said, “The program serves three and four year olds.” Contact ABCAP at (937) 378-6041 for more information.

well, but never followed through. Phillips also said that Caudle told him that he no longer wished to be the chief of police in Aberdeen. “He’s told me that he doesn’t want to be a cop in Aberdeen any longer”, Phillips said. “I said the easiest thing to do, Greg, is just walk away. But that wasn’t good enough. And now look what we’re going through now. If he’s the chief of police and he gets hurt on another job, are we supposed to just hold it for months? Nobody is going to do that.” Phillips filed a list of charges against Caudill with the council on May 26. State law requires that the charges be filed under

Bits and pieces on your health

If you’ve taken something over the counter for cough, you’ve taken dextromethorphan. Dextromethorphan is the only cough suppressant that is approved for OTC sale. It is the result of a program by the Navy and the CIA in the 1950s to find something besides codeine that would suppress cough. It was originally available by prescription in 1954, and later went OTC in 1958. Have you wondered why those commercials for Enbrel say not to use it if you have been exposed to TB or live or traveled to parts of the country where there is a greater risk of fungal infections (which is the Ohio River valley)? It’s because Enbrel (as well as Remicade and Humira) suppress the immune system. These drugs are used to treat a form of arthritis where the body’s own immune system is attacking the joints. By inhibiting the body’s immune system, it reduces the inflammation and damage to the joints, but also leaves the body more susceptible to infections. Many drug families can be identified by the ending of the drug name. For instance, drugs used to treat high cholesterol are called statins because the generic name of all those drugs end in “statin”. There are two classes of drugs used to treat high blood pressure, one called ACE inhibitors end in “pril” the other class called ARB’s ends in “sartan”. The newer migraine treatments like Imitrex all

TOM CALLAHAN, RPH end in “triptan”. If you’ve ever had a boil, someone may have suggested you use a drawing salve. What they were referring to is an ointment called ichthammol. Ichthammol is a thick black ointment that smells like tar but actually comes from shale oil. Technically it is dark-sulfonated shale oil. Ichthammol does not really draw anything out of the skin, but will soften the skin which helps the boil come to a head. It also has anti-bacterial and fungicidal properties. The first group of antibiotics was the sulfonamides. These are also referred to as “sulfa” drugs. Because of bacterial resistance, these drugs are almost never used anymore except in combination with trimethoprim. The combination of sulfamethoxazole & trimethoprim is available generically (sometimes abbreviated SMZ/TMP DS) or as the brands Septra and Bactrim. Usually you will see it as Septra DS or Bactrim DS. The DS stands for Double Strength. Tom Callahan is a pharmacist, he lives in the Milford area. Any question or comments can be sent to TomHealthMatters@gmail.c om. You can find archives of
