The tradition of Mother’s Day The tradition of Mother's Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother's Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis' campaigning. As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother's Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother's Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived.

Mother’s Day is the one day each year when men, women and children across the country gather to honor the mothers in their lives. Though it can be challenging to find new and unique

ways to display your affection for Mom on Mother’s Day, rest assured that sometimes the simplest concepts are the ones mothers most appreciate. This year, look no further than the following ideas for

some inspiration as you aim to make this Mother’s Day as special as possible for the mother or mothers in your life. • Give the gift of sweet treats. What better way to highlight mom’s sweet-

ness than with some delicious treats made just for her? Whether you decide to whip up some homemade confections in the kitchen or visit a nearby store for something continued on page 3

Celebrating Mother ’s Day!

Have a Happy Day....a Happy Day! BY Martha Jacob Have you ever had one of those days when everything seems to go right? You know... the ones where you wake up early, you feel good, your knee feels almost normal, nothing's swollen and your back doesn't ache? Many Sunday’s ago I was blessed with one of those days. I got up in plenty of time to relax, have a cup of coffee and get ready for church. My hair seemed to fall into place and was real big. It's always a good day when you have big hair, especially when you don't have as much hair as you once had. I had lost a few pounds so when I put my slacks on, they fit just right. My shoes matched perfectly and my earrings were exactly the same shade of blue as my blouse. My makeup went on well

and I thought I looked great. Then when I walked out into the living room, my better half, Roger, complimented

Then my three kids started talking about their childhood and some of my parenting skills -- or lack thereof. My six-

wiches five nights a week. We were happy and had a lot of fun. That's what I remember." "I remember how

me.

foot-seven, 28-yearold son told me he would still be afraid to talk back to me for fear of getting his mouth mashed, even though he's a grown man. My daughters told story after story about things we did together as a poor family. "I never even knew we were poor," my oldest daughter said. "I just figured everyone bought their clothes at yard sales and ate egg sand-

mom used to hate to be by herself all day, and how happy she was to see us when we got home from school," my youngest daughter said. “'I remember how she used to pray for snow days and would often say... “Come play with me, you can do your homework later.'" It was fun listening to them, even though I had to ask myself how they made it through school at all.

of my perfect day. Well, eventually the grandchildren started getting tired and grumpy and it was time for my perfect day to end. They were all in their cars ready to leave when my grandson said he had forgotten his sunglasses on the kitchen table. "I'll get them for you, sweetie," I quickly responded. So I went back into the house to get them.

What a great morning! It just doesn't get any better. Church was good. I always enjoy visiting with my church family. Then all three of my kids and my three grandsons came to our house for dinner. The meal was really good, the conversation was wonderful and I laughed until I cried at my grandchildren. It was a truly nice day.

As I walked back out to the car I saw my two daughters nodding their heads and smiling as they watched me. Then it happened. My balloon was popped, the perfect day was over. "That's funny, Mom, you walk just like grandma used to walk," my oldest said. "You have that same little waddle she always had." "What!?" I reacted. "No I don't. You guys are crazy. I don't walk like an old lady, that's in your imagination." As they drove out the driveway, I paid close attention to my walk, and sure enough, there it was, that old-lady waddle, just like my mother. It was a disturbing fact to come to terms with, but alas, my perfect day was good while it lasted. At least I still had big hair!

Bridging the distance on Mother’s Day Many modern families are spread out across the country if not the globe. Some people move away from family to further their careers, while others are called upon to care for others. Children may separate from their parents to witness new travel experiences. Military service may call individuals away from home as well.

Distance can make it challenging to spend time together for major holidays and other special occasions like Mother’s Day. But Mother’s Day can still be special even if Mom lives hundreds or thousands of miles away. Embrace technology - Technology helps break down some of the barriers created by distance.

While phone calls were once the way to keep in touch, many people now utilize various forms of digital communication. Someone who lives across different time zones can talk through texting or the various social media avenues available on computers, phones and tablets. Video apps like Skype and FaceTime enable you to video

chat with others in real time. Come Mother’s Day, connect with mom via such apps so you can watch her open up her gifts. Reconnect with home - If Mom is the one who ventured from home, help her to reconnect with her hometown or another place she feels attached to. Ship her some favorite regional foods that can

only be bought in town. Make a photo or video montage of places of interest in town. These little touches of home can mean the world to her. Create a special day - Even if you do not live near your mother, you can still plan a fun day for her in her town. Make reservations for a spa, hair salon or other sources of

pampering and surprise her with all the details. Treat her to the ultimate surprise If possible, make a surprise visit this Mother’s Day. Coordinate the plan with your father or another relative and then enjoy seeing her eyes light up when you arrive.

decadent, mom will no doubt appreciate the chance to indulge on her big day. Moms who prefer cookies and portable snacks will no doubt enjoy Pocky and Péjoy biscuit sticks. These tasty snacks from Gilco are dipped or filled with popular flavors, such as chocolate and strawberry, and are now available with green tea cream. Pair with a cup of tea, coffee or whichever beverage

mom prefers to complement her favorite treat. Pocky is available in most grocery stores, and can typically be found in the Asian food section. • Make a meal to remember. Mom deserves a night off from dinner detail, and while dining out is an option, a homemade meal may come across as more intimate and heartfelt. Thanks to kitchen appliances that make it easier than ever to prepare gour-

met meals at home, you can now make restaurant-style meals in your kitchen without sacrificing restaurantquality taste. For example, new tacook Rice Cookers from Tiger Corporation do more than just perfectly steam rice. They also incorporate synchro-cooking to cook two different items at once. Present mom with her favorite Asian-inspired poultry-and-rice dish or use the cooker to

easily bake bread or steam a side of vegetables. Pair the meal with her favorite wine and make sure you handle all the cleanup. While mom waits for dinner to be served, a soothing cup of tea can set the tone for a relaxing evening. The Tiger Hot Water Kettle boils water in seconds. odors, the kettle allows mom to quickly enjoy a cup of her favorite brew. These kitchen essentials are available at Bed, Bath and Beyond. • Plan a Mother’s Day picnic. Busy moms may look forward to a break from the bustle of daily routines. An afternoon picnicking outdoors can be the ideal way to enjoy a special Mother’s Day. Plan an easy menu of foods that have portability. It’s easy

to transport hot or cold foods when you have Tiger Stainless Steel Thermal Wares on hand. A refreshing fruit salad can be kept cool for about 8 hours. If mom prefers pasta primavera, the thermal container can keep it warm and ready until it’s time to enjoy. Gifting is made easy when you tap into the things mom likes.

Celebrating Mother ’s Day!

5 ways to commemorate Mother’s Day Losing a loved one is never easy. Whether the loss is recent or not, many people find the void created by a loved one’s passing never leaves them. Celebrating holidays or milestones can magnify feelings of loss, and such feelings may surface on Mother’s Day among people whose mothers are deceased. People approach Mother’s Day in unique ways when their mother has been laid to rest. Such an experience is extremely personal, and there’s really no right or wrong way to mark the occasion. It can be challenging scrolling through other’s social media posts

about happy brunches and thoughtful gifts. Some, particularly those for whom the wounds may be especially fresh, may opt to avoid the celebration or go through the motions for the benefit of children or spouses. Others may embrace the bonds they had with their mothers by reflecting on their memories. Those opting to stay connected to their mothers this year can recognize that, although Mom may be gone, they are not motherless. While Mother’s Day may be painful for people who have lost their mothers, the following are five ways to make the most of Mother’s

Day. 1. What would make her happy? Take a heartfelt mo-

hiking shoes? Pay homage to her by walking in her footsteps and you may

ment to really think about what made Mom tick and brought joy to her life. Was it pouring over recipes in the kitchen? Did mom like to trek to the top of a mountain in her

just feel a deeper connection. 2. Get together with siblings. If you are lucky enough to have siblings, you can share the day together. This way you can remember the

happy times, comfort each other and laugh together. If you don’t have siblings, consider a visit with an aunt or uncle or another close relative who may be feeling the loss, too. 3. Relay fond stories to others. Celebrate Mother’s Day by doing things to ensure Mom’s spirit and personality live on. Bring up fond stories of Mom with your spouse, friends or your own children. Help blur out the sadness of the loss by focusing on happy memories, such as those depicted in family photos. 4. Put mom front and center. Take out a beautiful photograph of your mother and display it in a

prime location in the house. This way you may feel like she is sharing the day with you, and you can think about her fondly each time you see the photo. 5. Enjoy your favorite childhood meal. Whether Mom was a master chef or couldn’t boil water, there’s bound to be a meal you associate with her. If that special meal is Chinese takeout or a slowcooked roast, enjoy it on Mother’s Day in her honor. Coping with loss on Mother’s Day is seldom easy. With time and by focusing on the positive, people who have lost their mothers can enjoy Mother’s Day.

Unique Mother’s Day gift ideas Mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, and many more remarkable women often work tirelessly and without fanfare to provide for their families. Even though they may deserve to be recognized throughout the year, moms enjoy a special day nestled within the month of May when children, spouses and others celebrate Mother’s Day. Many people give heartfelt gifts on Mother’s Day to express their love for the mothers in their lives. The perfect gift

may focus on Mom’s interests and the things that make her truly happy. With that in mind, the following shopping tips can help anyone find the perfect Mother’s Day gift. • Explore spa packages. What mother won’t benefit from some rest and relaxation with a little pampering thrown in? Salons and massage therapists typically put together Mother’s Day packages that cater to mothers. Packages may include massages, facials, hair treatments, mani-

cures, and pedicures. Gift-givers can customize the services depending on their budgets. • Dining out can be a treat. A meal at a favorite restaurant can be a welcome change from kitchen duty. Mother’s Day is a busy day for restaurants, many of which have limited menus to better handle the crowds. As a result, if dining out on Mother’s Day, Mom may not get the full menu she desires. To ensure mothers have full menus at their disposal, gift givers can

cook a meal at home on Mother’s Day and then choose another day of the week to enjoy a meal in an upscale restaurant. • Schedule a paint and sip. A paint and sip session is a unique gift. A session is typically two hours and includes step-by-step instructions. Patrons are encouraged to bring snacks and their favorite beverages. With the right planning, well-intentioned children can turn the evening into a “ladies night out” and encourage other moms to join in the

fun. Or the entire family can paint masterpieces together. • Give tickets to a show or sporting event. Whether Mom is a sports fan or she prefers the theater or live music, event tickets can make a wonderful gift. Unique gift ideas include tickets to Cirque du Soleil, Shen Yun or a Broadway play. • Give the gift of wine tasting. Wineries can be found across the country and frequently open their doors to wine tast-

ings and wine pairing events. A Mother’s Day wine tasting can be special for the entire family and support local businesses. Check the vineyard’s rules on guests. Many times those under 21 can attend but will not be permitted to consume wine, though other refreshments may be available. Mother’s Day offers the perfect opportunity to lavish attention on special women. Gifts that cater to Mom’s interests will make the biggest splash.

Surprise Mom with a special dessert in her honor Mothers selflessly devote themselves to their children from infancy into adulthood. A mother’s love never wanes, and she’s always ready and willing to step in and put her children first. Mother’s Day is a great chance for men, women and children to honor the special women in their lives. Delicious

homemade treats can show mothers just how much they’re appreciated and adored. Try this tasty recipe for “Cold Mango Soufflés Topped with Toasted Coconut” from “The Complete Mexican, South American & Caribbean Cookbook” (Metro Books) by Jane Milton, Jenni Fleetwood and Marina Filippelli.
