The Parable

Mark 12: “ A certain man planted a vineyard, and set an hedge about it, and digged a place for the winefat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country.” When I was a boy it was fairly common for a poor farmer with sons to work the farm of a more prosperous man. He would work it on the share system. He was called a tenant farmer or sharecropper. The owner of the farm would expect a share of the produce or profit. Was that unreasonable? This parable in Mark 12 refers to this system of farming. Now, when the time came for harvest, the owner sent a servant to collect his portion. The husbandmen beat the servant and sent him away empty. When the next harvest came he sent another servant. This one they stoned and wounded and sent away shamefully treated. The third servant he sent was killed by the husbandmen. The owner sent many others that were also beaten or killed. Finally, he sent his only son, whom he loved. He felt sure they would respect his son and give him the portion that was the owners’ due. Instead, when they saw his son coming, they reasoned together and said, “This is the heir: come let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be ours.” Remember, this is a parable. it is also given in Isaiah 5. “ For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel.” The house of Israel is the vineyard and its leaders are the husbandmen. Back in the parable of Mark 12, the husbandmen kill the owner’s son. It goes on to say that the lord of the vineyard will come and destroy the husbandmen and give the vineyard unto others. Who are the others he will give the vineyard to? The church. The church is the vineyard now and we have the responsibility. we are the husbandmen. Does God still expect a portion? Yes. You and I have an obligation to God Almighty. We cannot short him or neglect our responsibility to God. It is written, “It is appointed unto man once to die and after this the judgment.” We will meet God someday face to face. An old Southern Baptist deacon, who had been in this position for fifty years, told me this true story. Some years ago three deacons were counting the offering. One of the deacons opened his envelope and found it empty. He told the others that something was wrong because he knew he had put a brand new ten dollar bill in the envelope. After all the money

was laid out on the table, not one new ten dollar bill could be found. He said, “Someone is stealing from the offering plate. Let’s see if we can find out who it is.” They began to watch the men who collected the offering and carried it back to the office. Sure enough, one man was caught robbing the plate. When he was confronted, he admitted to taking five thousand dollars over a period of years. The old deacon said to me, “Now, I want to ask you a question, who is worse? This man or a person who does not tithe?” My answer was, “In the eyes of God, the person who does not tithe is just as guilty as the man who put his hand in the offering plate.” Check out Malachi 3:8. Watch now, who owns the vineyard? God does. It is not reasonable that he should get his share? He doesn’t ask for half or even a third. He only asks for one tenth. He gives ninety percent to the husbandmen. Look, an apple farmer grows ten apples on God’s ground with his sunshine, his water, and his air. He only asks for one lousy apple back. Someone will say, “I’m not giving anything to that church.” That’s a cop out. You are not giving to the church. You are giving to God through the church. Instead of saying, “I’m not giving” what you should say is “I’m going to rob God.” I’m not just preaching on tithing. What about your time? God says six days shall you labor and do all your work. He gives us six days for our own use. All He wants is one day. Still someone will say, “I’m going to do what I want to do, when I want to do it. I don’t care what anyone says!” What about what God says? He is the lord of the vineyard. Do you realize you are living on God’s ground, in His sunshine and breathing His air? Where’s His portion? Don’t you think you should respect God? We ought to give because we love Him. We are His husbandmen. He is our owner. He bought and paid for us in full. He bought us back from sin, degradation and hell with the blood of His son.
