PRESS RELEASE

Lifelong Peebles residents will remember 1 Simmons Avenue as the space where the yellow bricked Peebles High School was located. Today, it’s safe to say that 1 Simmons Avenue looks a lot different. Over the last several years, the property has been developed into a youth sports park, and the work still continues. A few years ago, a group of community leaders, parents and residents formed the Peebles Youth Sports Organization, Inc. (PYSO), which was developed to plan for and develop park that children in and around Peebles could come to play all kinds of sports throughout the year, as well as a place for families to come to be physically active, together. PYSO has carried out a major renovation plan over the past few years that includes developing new baseball/softball fields, new fencing, green space for soccer and football, a basketball court, a batting cage, new bleachers and new concreted areas that help make the park ADA accessible, a playground set, relocating and updating the concession building. In 2018, several of these

renovations were completed through a partnership between PYSO and the Adams County Creating Healthy Communities (ACCHC) program. While the ACCHC program is committed to preventing and reducing chronic disease statewide, the ACCHC also collaborates with communities to improve access to and affordability of healthy food and increase opportunities for physical activity by implementing sustainable evidence-based strategies that create a culture of health where Adams County residents live, learn, play, work and worship. Through this partnership, ACCHC grant funds assisted with the purchase of bleachers, concrete, ball field development and bases and mounds, and a new storage building for use at the Park. Partners of the ACCHC, particularly the GE-Peebles Test Operation community service group, and other local groups and individuals provided countless hours of volunteer services to assist PYSO in getting the renovations completed and the Park ready for the 2018 season. “There are many reasons to renovate or revitalize a community park. But if you want to break it

down to the most important reason, it’s for the sake of our kids,” stated Debbie Ryan, ACCHC Coordinator. “Creating a pace where kids feel safe and happy while they are being active and at play is what revitalization is all about.” While baseball and softball season are over, the grounds are often still busy with soccer and football leagues, or kids just playing a game of pick-up basketball or on the play equipment when weather permits. It isn’t unusual to see a flurry of activity somewhere on the nine+ acres. One thing is for sure, in an area where many Peebles children went to school for many years ago, there are still a lot of lessons learned at 1 Simmons Avenue. What better use of this land than to carry on life lessons for kids? “We still have more work to do and projects to complete,” reports Kyle Smalley, PYSO President. “But with these community partnerships, we’re taking steps in the right direction to make a great park for our kids and the community.” Stay tuned in 2019 for more collaboration and renovations at 1 Simmons Avenue.

A child wrote and passionately asked, “Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?” The answer: “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginians. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence.” The natural imagination of children allows them to read fictional books, create stories, and enjoy superheroes. Child-development experts assert the benefits of a healthy imagination for producing curious and creative kids. And pretend play is a healthy component of a child’s social, emotional, and cognitive development. What’s a parent to do? Parents get to choose whether they reinforce the traditional Santa story with their own children based on their religious values, cultural beliefs, and preferences. And the same thing goes for the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy. HoHo-Ho. Melissa Martin, Ph.D., is an author, columnist, educator, and therapist. She lives in Southern Ohio.
