Welcome To The 41st Annual PUMPKIN RUN NATIONALS!

The Clermont County Fairgrounds in Owensville will be filled to capacity the weekend of Sept. 30, Oct. 1 and 2 with classic automobile enthusiasts, their families, and vintage cars and trucks for the region’s premier car show. F or the love of a car By Megan Alley Sun Group Newspapers

It’s a familiar story – parents buy a car for their teenager. But that’s where this story stops being typical, because the 1936 Ford Coupe that Jim Philhower’s dad bought for him in 1965 is the car that he continues to use as his “everyday car.” Philhower, a native and current resident of the city of Milford, was a 17-year-old attending Milford High School when his dad, who was working for Container Corporation of America, was transferred to Mexico City in 1958; the family would go on to live there for the next 10 years. Before the move, Philhower had already gotten his Ohio driver’s license and taken up an interest in fixing cars. “I’m a self-taught mechanic,” he said. “I started working on cars when I was 16 years old, and I haven’t stopped since.” He added, “I love my old cars; I only have eyes for old cars. They’re so easy to work on, and you don’t need special tools to work on them; today’s cars are too complicated.” Philhower went on to procure a driver’s license in Mexico, and his parents bought him several cars before the coupe, which Philhower described as “very worn out and un-drivable.” “My dad got it for me to work on,” Philhower said, adding, “When he bought the car for me, my mom was really happy because she always knew where I was; either under the car, or on top, fixing it.” The car, which he nicknamed Aztec Warrior, was

originally painted green, but the only evidence of this is found in the trunk, which includes a rumble seat. “By the time I got it, it didn’t have any paint on it because the previous owner had stripped it,” Philhower described. At $240, and given the condition of the car, he admits the car was overpriced. Continued on Page 13

“This same car in the Ohio area was worth about $25 or $40; I overpaid,” Philhower said. He quickly began fixing up the coupe and used it as his primary car for the next year before he put in a high-performance Chevrolet motor; it has the same motor in it today. “Adapting the Chevy engine and driveline to the car, that was the most challenging part, and making it safe and roadworthy,” Philhower said. “But that’s when I started to really update things on the car.” He went on to meet and marry his wife Laila, and the two had a son born in Mexico City in 1968.

“I brought my son back from the hospital in this old car; we put in him in a basket behind the passenger seat.” Philhower remembered. In 1969, the family got ready to move back to Milford. In preparation, Philhower sold off some of his other cars, but he decided to hang on to the coupe. “The coupe was the one I kept; it was an old car, which I liked,” he said. Rather than have the car shipped, Philhower decided Continued on Page 14

For the love of a car Continued from Page 13 he would drive the coupe back on a “solo road trip” of sorts. He estimates it took him at least 15 hours to drive from Mexico City to the Mexico/Texas border. “The roads were always good, but I didn’t want to drive at night because of the cattle in the road, it was pretty treacherous,” Philhower said. He used the trip as an opportunity to spend some time in McAllen, San Antonio and Wako, Texas. Philhower’s wife moved to Milford later that year, and Continued on Page 15

For the love of a car Continued from Page 14 the two, who continue to live in Milford, went on to have two daughters. A growing family meant that Philhower needed to find a bigger car; in the mid-1970s, he purchased a 1941 Dodge two-door sedan. “With five people, the coupe was a little cramped; it was time to get something larger,” he said. At the time, the sedan wasn’t running, and it wasn’t drivable, but Philhower fixed it up, and it became his new “daily driver.” Philhower’s passion for fixing cars translated into a career; he worked in sales for Stagge Auto Parts for 35 years. “My job made working on cars easier because I had a constant supply of parts,” he said. Philhower, who is now 75 years old, is still driving his coupe and his sedan, and he still works on them almost every day. “When there’s work to be done, I do it; it’s been so much fun,” he said. “I would recommend that anyone buy an old fixer car and make it a family project. It’s so interesting to start off with something that’s in sad shape and bring it back to life, all while having fun along the way.” He added, “My experiences have been a real adventure.” Philhower, who still shows his car today, entered his coupe into Fastiques Rod and Custom Car Club’s first rod run held in Mt. Orab in 1974. And, while he gets offers “all the time” from people wanting to buy the car, Philhower says it’s not for sale. “This car is a family heirloom; it’s something that definitely gets passed on,” he said, adding, “So many people buy cars and flip them; it’s more of a business for some people. But me, I’m wed to my car.” While Philhower made the drive from Mexico City to Milford by himself, the everlasting journey to fix and maintain the car isn’t one he’s done alone. “I advise finding a car that is affordable and within your skill-set,” he said. “And, your friends are your best helpers when it comes to fixing up an old car. In fact, having good friends is a must; it’s a family affair.” He went on to give a special thanks to his parents Carl and Evelyn Philhower, Willis Freeman and his son Danny Freeman, Jack Strunk and his son Drew Strunk, son-in-law Chris Tomes and the crew at Quality Care Automotive. Ohio is a very car-oriented state, Philhower said. “There’s a tremendous amount of old cars here; it’s a good state for that,” he said, noting that people really take notice of the coupe when he drives it. “I’m aware that people are looking at me when I drive it,” he said. “The most fun part is when I’m driving down the road, people give me the old thumbs up; that is the best compliment I can get.” While the car belongs to Philhower, his daughter Gloria Evelyn Philhower said, “It’s part of my history; it’s a part of my life.” She added, “He has worked on these cars his whole life, and that has taught me to appreciate the value of hard work.”

Hoffman Auto Racing is more than just a racing company—it's a family with a passion for racing that goes back more than 80 years. The passion for racing started with August Hoffman. He got his first race car in 1929, and raced from time to time. When Richard Hoffman was growing up on a farm, there was always a race car around. “As a young man, I just kind of got enthralled with race cars,” Richard Hoffman said. When he was old enough, August Hoffman would let Richard Hoffman clean car parts and clean a car up after a race. Richard was one of four children born to August and Jeannette Hoffman, the other three being Tom, Jennifer and Jean. However, it wasn't until 1950 that August Hoffman got a “credible” race car, a midget car, Richard Hoffman said. August Hoffman didn't race the cars, he owned them and worked on them. He would run cars in places like Winchester and Salem, Indiana, and Dayton, Ohio. The drivers that drove in the Hoffmans' kind of racing into the 1960s on quarter and half mile tracks were also stars of the Indianapolis 500. In 1953, August Hoffman bought a 1948 Kurtis Kraft midget, which Richard Hoffman still owns today. Roger Ward and Troy Ruttman both drove that car. “Boy, when that came up the driveway was I ever hooked,” Richard Hoffman said. In the 1970s, August and Richard Hoffman became partners. In 1973, the two decided to switch from sprint cars to IndyCars, and purchased their first IndyCar that year. They competed with IndyCars until 1984. By 1987, when Richard Hoffman's son, Rob, was in his late teens, he had taken an interest in mechanics. Richard Hoffman bought a car and told his son that they would go to Lawrenceburg, Indiana with one car and one motor on Saturday nights, just for fun. “Before the end of the year we were racing Friday nights in Bloomington, Indiana, and

Sunday nights in Lima, Ohio, and Saturday nights at Lawrenceburg,” Richard Hoffman said. They were racing more than they had originally intended to, so they decided to join the United States Auto Club, a group that sanctioned the Indiana 500, sprint cars, midgets and champ cars. USAC only had 20 or 30 races a year, but most weren't more than 500 miles away from the Hoffmans. “It meant a lot,” Richard Hoffman said of his son taking an interest in racing. In 1989, Richard and Rob Hoffman did their first

full year with USAC. Also that year, they won their first national championship. Since, they have won the national championship nine more times, and hope to win their 11th this year. “It was wonderful. I didn't realize how important that was to me,” Richard Hoffman said of when he won the first championship. The family used to build their own cars, in the same shop they still use, until it became easier to purchase cars. “They were superior to our competition,” Richard Hoffman said. Their cars did better on paved tracks, but now most tracks are dirt because dirt is more popular with fans. Many have driven for the Hoffmans, including

Tony Stewart and Bryan Clauson, who drove for them only once in the Little 500 in 2014. The Hoffmans put a car in the Little 500, a race in Anderson, Indiana, three times, but didn't win until this year. “Right now, that's my favorite race because it's been going on for 60 some odd years, we took three swings at it and never got it done...but this time, it wasn't without drama, but we got it done. So we are so happy about that,” Richard Hoffman said. The Hoffmans have been racing since February this year with USAC, which has expanded its program. Already this year the Hoffmans were the champion of Indiana Sprint Week. The race season runs from Continued on Page 27

Tufts-Schildmeyer Family Funeral Homes has many services they offer to local families and one of them is quite attractive to old car buffs. They own and offer the use of a 1948 Cadillac Hearse. The only modifications to the engine is a carburetor, and a 6 volt electric fuel pump. In the early 1990’s when then car was purchased the paint was originally a dark gray called Thundercloud. The Resoration Bob Schildmeyer found antique professional car restorer W. Rance Bennett at a trade show. During a conversation Bob expressed his interest in adding a unique classic professional car to his fleet. A few weeks passed after the meeting and he received a call about a car he maybe interested in. The car is the one that we own today. He believed, Bob, would love the car since it was a vehicle made in Ohio and filled the need of our owner. The car was actually found in a barn and was covered in hay. The interest has continued into the next generation through Richard Hoffman's grandson, August, who is in the Air Force and has taken an interest in mechanics. He repairs F-16 aircrafts. To put it simply, Richard Hoffman loves racing because he loves winning. “I've always had a respect for people that achieved victories in this type of racing. There was a time when we weren't performing that well and to be able to perform at the top echelon of what we do, makes me very proud of my team,” Richard Hoffman said. Winning also has a “camaraderie effect” on the team. “Whenever you win, you win as a group,” Richard Hoffman said.

Then, in 1976, Schanre switched racing classes; he decided to use the car for parts and put it in a storage container in Lompoc, California for the next 27 years. The car was resurrected 10 years ago when Beaumont, who at the time was looking for an “old school racer,” bought the car. “When I saw it on the eBay ad, it looked like what I was searching for; the ‘63 vet is something I always loved,” he said. Beaumont rebuilt the car to “its original glory” and said it even goes a little faster than it did back in the day. The car, which now has a Doug Nash five-speed transmission, goes from zero to 142 miles per hour in 9.60 seconds. “We will be running a power glide this year and hope to be more competitive,” he said. Orange Peel is one of two “special interest” cars that Beaumont owns. “It’s been a lot of work, but it’s been a lot of fun,” he added. Car racing can bring a lot of highs and lows, and Beaumont describes driving Orange Peel as a “privilege.” “It’s fun to drive the car,” he said. “It’s a good time.” However, when asked if he has developed a partnership with the car, he said, “we’re getting there.”

ollecting more than just old cars

BY Wayne Gates Sun Group Newspapers Chuck Craver has a hankering for the history of the highway. The Goshen area man has a collection of auto memorabilia that goes back 100 years. “I’ve always been into old cars, and my collection tells a story about the history of transportation in this country. All of the old signs and gas pumps and oil cans and things help complete the story,” said Craver.“I’ve been collecting this stuff for over twenty years, going to swap meets and stuff, trying to find what I can.”Craver said that his collection started as a hobby, but soon grew to be more than that.“”It’s definitely been a good investment, This stuff goes up in value as time passes. But the main reason was the hobby aspect. I just enjoy having it and talking to other people about it.”As far as a

personal favorite, in the collection, Craver said “I like the red winged horse, the Pegasus on the Mobil signs. I have a three foot by five foot Mobil sign that’s one of my favorite things.” Craver said that he’s found a way to combine two of his favorite activities.“I work on old cars as a hobby and I have the collection in my shop, so it’s around me all the time. It’s nice to be able to look at it and enjoy it while you are working.” Craver said that the collection has been known to draw the attention of likeminded enthusiasts.“ On occasion, somebody will come by and take a look around. They like to talk about old cars and filling station items and things like that,” Craver said. “Everybody likes neon signs. They are vivid and

light up. And of course, the older the item is, the more interesting it is to people. Sometimes people relate to an item from their youth where they might have worked at an old filling station and see one of the signs.” Craver said the simple question of what an item is worth can be a difficult question. “It’s hard to put a value on an item. They are worth what somebody is willing to pay. I’ve got filling station items from the teens and 1920’s that’s probably my oldest stuff, and I’ve got a lot of neat stuff from the fifties and sixties era too.” Craver even said that he has a movie star in the bunch. “I’ve got a 1940 Chevrolet fuel truck that we loaned out Continued on page 39

While focused in the United States, they have found inventories to purchase from as far away as South America, Israel and Russia. Mining companies, foreign militaries and governments, shipping companies, financiers, foreign and domestic parts distributors, private and commercial fleets are just a few of the unusual places Green Sales Company has found inventory to purchase. Although Green Sales is not a dealer, they have years of dealer experience and competitive pricing. Five of their sales personnel have served as Ford Parts Managers or lead countermen. In fact, there is in excess of 350 years of parts experience shared between their seasoned parts staff. This, in addition to their support staff, makes them a valuable resource in providing you the parts you need. President Tim Yeomans bought into the business in 1980 before acquiring the entire company in 1990. Yeomans started his career with Chevrolet Motor Division accounting department before moving to the Parts and Service Division at Ford Motor Company where he worked for 13 years. SAFETY First!

Please refrain from “burn-outs” when leaving the show. Although many spectators line the street in anticipation, this is not a show event. Fastiques strongly discourages spinning out when exiting the show. The roads around the fairgrounds are narrow and crowded; if a car gets out of control, several bystanders could be injured. Police will issue tickets. 41st Pumpkin Run Nationals
