Welcome to Seasons!
O
n a recent road trip that took me through the rolling splendor of Hocking Hills area, my eyes feasted on picturesque scene, one after another. The green, green grass had been well-watered with recent rain. Is grass ever as green as it is after a spring rain? There were sheep grazing on a hill, an old white church sat atop a knoll surrounded by gravestones, as if they were standing guard over the old place. The vibrant bloom of the Red Buds seemed to challenge those trees beginning to show early green leaves to hurry and catch up. It’s spring everyone! And for us in the Ohio Valley, it seems like we have done our share of waiting for it the change of seasons.
yourself going even if you have never been there. I recalled a Japanese teahouse with its tatami floors and sliding bamboo doors with paper insets that opened to a balcony shaded by tall, thin, willowy bamboo trees. When I look down I can see the brook that cascades down the hill and hear the rhythmic song of the water gently flowing against the rocks.
No wonder we all get just a bit itchy to get out and take a trip. For some it’s the call of the beach and warmer temperatures while others may feel the call of the wild. A hike on the trails, camping at your favorite haunt or taking off an afternoon to drop a line in the water… whatever your preference, I hope you take time to carve out the time for yourself.
It’s just a thought… I know it won’t take the place of actually going to some of the lovely destinations you read about here. But sometimes it might just be a place you need to go in the meantime.
When I can’t work that getaway into my schedule, when circumstances dictate other plans, I have an alternative. Years ago, someone challenged me to discover a place to go without ever leaving the place where I happen to be at the moment. Imagine a place from your past, or a place you can imagine
I close my eyes and take in the beauty of the room, the orange glow cast about from the setting sun. I prepare a cup of tea where I am and drink in “my happy place”… the place I go when I need the relaxation afforded from a getaway yet never leaving the place I am.
Celebrate the Seasons and have a nice trip!

here are over 20 hiking trails in Adams County each offering different and unique views, different flora & fauna, geological formations, with varying degrees of effort and length required to hike the trail. All six state nature preserves have trails through some diverse flora or geologic formation. The 20,000 acre Edge of Appalachia Preserve has four trails that define what the preserve is all about. Some of the hikes tie into the Buckeye Trail. Most hikes are easy to moderate; trails are well maintained and marked. At some trailheads hikers will find a bulletin board with preserve notes, rules and an area map. Buzzardroost Rock Trail: The two miles one way to Buzzardroost Rock is easily the most popular hike in Adams County. A hike to the “Roost and back rewards hikers with a spectacular view of the Brush Creek Valley. Spring wildflowers, spectacular fall colors, and during winter, the surrounding landscape lays bare all its unique geological features. Directions: St. Rt. 125 Lynx, OH Lynx Prairie Trail: The 1.5 mile loop trail begins at Cline Road south of Lynx. The Lynx Prairie is a National Natural Landmark and it best viewed in late summer when the prairie is blooming and features over 200 species of plants and prairie flowers. Directions: Cline Road, Lynx, OH May 2019

Are we in the same restaurant?
though it was already after 1 p.m. We arrived at the lodge about five minutes after two. Just in time to see the hostess hang a sign on the entrance of the lodge that read... No longer serving lunch, will re-open at 5 p.m. “We should have eaten in New Boston when I suggested,” my better half reminded me, sounding a bit hangry.

A
ll of our children had to work on Fourth of July one year, so my husband, Roger, and I decided to take a day trip, just the two of us. We considered driving to Cincinnati to the Omnimax Theater, which was showing a special on the Alps and we talked about packing a picnic and going to the zoo, but the weatherman was predicting the possibility of rain. Eventually we decided to go somewhere in Kentucky. We picked a state park called Carter Caves and I got on line and printed out directions and information about the park.
long enough to see where his late grandmother’s brick house used to stand. She and his grandfather had built the house by hand. We had heard it had been condemned and consequently torn down. But much to my husband’s delight, a young family had restored it and it looked quite comfortable.
So he brought out the atlas again and looked for the closest nice place to eat. He decided we should head to Huntington, West Virginia, he knew where there was a Red Lobster. By now he was irritable and hungry; a bad combination; so I agreed it was a good idea.
“Why don’t we eat in the next little town of New Boston,” my husband suggested. “They’ve got a great Golden Corral that I’ve eaten at before. You’ll like it.”
We stopped and picked up a couple drinks and some crackers to tide us over. But even with all the little problems, I was thoroughly enjoying my time with my husband.
I wasn’t really hungry, I had been snacking on pretzels, so I suggested we get on down the road and head for Carter Caves Park and eat.
By the time we arrived at the Red Lobster it was about 4:30 p.m. and we were both famished.
Roger, a bricklayer by trade, had been working in Wheelersburg on a new school so we headed in that direction so I could see the construction site on our way.
Twenty minutes later, I announced I was hungry. Of course, we were nowhere near a restaurant, so he said we should probably just wait till we get to the park and eat at the lodge and restaurant that was there.
We stopped first, in Sciotoville,
That sounded nice to me even
We got seated at a nice table and the waitress took our drink order and set those delicious cheesy biscuits on our table. We both grabbed one and chowed down. But, as I sat there looking across the table at those big blue eyes of the man I’d been with for 35 years, I began to think back at all the good and bad times we had shared. He looked up at me and asked me if I knew what I wanted. He had a smile that could melt the devil himself. We ordered and he commented on how hungry
he was, and how much he looked forward to getting his shrimp dinner. He was so handsome to me, as handsome as he was the first time we met. I remembered our first kiss, the birth of our first child, the loss of his mother and other memories that just came flowing into my mind. The background music in the restaurant was an instrumental rendition of, “You Light Up My Life”, and I could feel myself melting into the moment. There I was, sitting at a table with the man of my dreams, the father of my children, eating cheesy biscuits at Red Lobster. Life just doesn’t get any sweeter than that. I reached over and took his hand in mine, looked deep into his eyes and whispered softly, “Any regrets, babe?” With no hesitation in his voice what-so-ever, he looked at me, our eyes met and he said “Oh yeah... I got regrets!” I was crushed... the moment was over. Oh Yeah! I thought to myself. What does that even mean. My expression quickly changed and I responded to him nearly in tears by this time and said. You have regrets, what are they? With a clueless expression on his face he said, “I regret we didn’t eat at the Golden Corral in New Boston when I wanted to.” Just when I think I know the man I’m living with, reality sets in and I realize we march to the beat of different drummers.

Put Solar Power to Work for You
How does a grid-tie solar system work? A grid-tied system uses electricity from both the solar panel system and the electrical grid. It draws energy directly from the sunlight during the day, and draws energy from the grid (electric company) at night or on cloudy days. The system constantly monitors solar energy production and automatically switches from solar panel to grid-tied as power needs change. When your solar panels produce more electricity than is needed, it can spin your electric meter backwards and credit your account. This is all automatic and no action is needed by the homeowner.
Sizing your electricity needs
Don’t forget the tax credits!
Shetler Solar will be glad to help you calculate your system needs. To begin, gather your electric bills for the past year, or call your electric company, to learn your annual kilowatt (kw) usage. For example, if you used 12,000 kwh in a year, you would need a system size of 6.5 kw. That’s basically about $13,000. The good news is that you can choose your system size to match your budget.
Residential solar installations qualify for a 30% tax credit, and commercial installations get a 40% credit. For example, with the tax credit your net costs would decrease to $8,190 for a residential system and $7,020 for a commercial system. And pricing includes all labor and installation for a standard roof-mount system.
Remember this is the last year for the TAX CREDIT
Please call Dan Shetler for a consultation and estimate 937.386.3183
Shetler Solar has done hundreds of installations in both off-grid and grid-tied systems. We are happy to listen to your needs and discuss options with you. Although off-grid homes were more common in the past (using battery banks for power storage), grid-tied homes are becoming very popular for people who want to save on their electric bill.

KY Gateway Museum Center. They offer up the history of our hometown distillery as well as important area and governmental happenings that effected alcohol production. You can also grab a tasting and visit their unique gift shop.
History is a BIG part of what makes Maysville the mecca for possibilities and happenings. We were founded by famous frontiersmen like Simon Kenton and Daniel Boone and Hollywood Legends like Rosemary Clooney called Maysville home. From our historic downtown to our Old Washington district, you can find museums, architecture and significant locations throughout the area. With so much history, it is not surprising that our Underground Railroad locations are highly visited and a staple exhibit at the Freedom Center in Cincinnati is from Maysville.
While downtown, a must see is the Kaye Savage Browning Miniature Collection. This exquisite collection resides at the KY Gateway Museum Center and immerses visitors into the world of 1/12 scale miniatures that will take you to the past, present and imaginary realm. The level of detail in every piece is amazing and one could spend hours in this premier exhibit.
Bourbon is also a big part of our heritage and a visit to Kentucky would not be complete without it. So, jump aboard the B-Line (Northern Kentucky’s New Bourbon Trail) at the third oldest registered distillery in the state of Kentucky, Old Pogue. Here you will taste more than 300 years of a family honed skill, still being produced by 5th and 6th generation Pogues. In the Kitchen with Sherry Mitchell
Sherry, CJ and Christi in front of the Silo District
S
ummer time picnics, summer vacations, weekend getaways, weddings and graduation days are here. And it’s time to prepare the perfect food and beverage for all those occasions! Here’s a suggestion gleaned from our weekend . Recently, my daughter, Christi, my grandson, CJ, and I traveled to Waco, Texas for him to check out the lovely Baylor University. Of course, Christi and I—fans of Waco’s Fixer-Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines—visited their Silo District made famous by the HGTV pair. Two enormous cottonseed silos create the eye-catching view of this family-oriented farmhouse scene. If you make the trip, which we totally recommend, take the Waco Tours van. It’s worth every dime and you will see familiar sites you have seen on the show. One of the best treats on our trip was enjoying one of Joanna’s chicken salad croissants and her lavenderlemonade. We purchased them from the Magnolia food truck in the courtyard of the Silos. And the cupcakes are out of this world! When we got back home to Ohio we talked about that trip over and over and reminisced about that delicious sandwich

and beverage and of course the cupcakes. So, with that in mind, we decided we didn’t need to go back to Waco to enjoy the same luncheon—though we might! Instead we got to our kitchen to make our own. Three generations of Mitchell girls, Sherry, Christi and ten-year-old granddaughter, Avah, joined together for a few hours of culinary, farmhouse fun and creating Sherry’s Farmhouse Chicken Salad, Fresh Lavender-Lemonade and Raspberry Butter Cream Lemon Cupcakes all inspired by that Waco trip. Part of the fun of “cooking together” is the teamwork and the chitchat and the teaching and learning for the young ones—a true bonding experience. Cooking up this wonderful trio. And best of all, when CJ came home from work, he taste-tested for us, and we received thumbs up for all three! Try this for your next picnic or party. You’ll be amazed. Christi and CJ check out lunch May 2019
Lavender Lemonade is a fragrant, refreshing, and beautiful drink. This Lavender Lemonade Recipe is the ultimate party drink to make for baby shower drinks, wedding showers, Summer BBQs, and more! Cheers to Spring! Add some purple food coloring to spice it up. Such a pretty sip to bring to any party.
Lavender Lemonade Lemonade • 6 cups cold water • 4-5 lemons • ½ cup Lavender Simple Syrup • 2-quart pitcher Squeeze the lemons after you halved them until you get 1 cup of lemon juice. Add the lemon juice to the large pitcher. A glass one is pretty to use. Pour in cold water while stirring to make sure it’s all mixed together. Add your lavender syrup (gradually add and taste; more or less to taste). Garnish with lemon slice. Add more sugar if desired.
Homemade Lavender Simple Syrup • 1 cup sugar • 1 cup water • 1 tablespoon dried lavender buds (purple food coloring optional) • 1-quart Mason jar Heat on the stove stirring until sugar is dissolved. Remove and steep for 15 minutes. Heat sugar over medium heat with 1 cup water. Until it starts to boil. Add lavender to quart jar. Pour hot liquid over lavender buds. Add coloring if desired. For a few hours or overnight. To infuse the fragrance. Use a mesh strainer to separate the mushy lavender from the syrup. Makes 1 ½ cups.
Hint: You can buy ready-made lavender syrup as shown and you could substitute Country Time Lemonade if you prefer. But it doesn’t make memories like homemade version does.
Lemon Cupcakes with Raspberry Buttercream Icing Cupcake • 1 ½ cups flour • 1 ½ teaspoon baking powder • ½ teaspoon salt • ½ cup unsalted butter (softened) • 1 cup granulated sugar • 2 large farm fresh eggs room temperature • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract • 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice • 2 tablespoons of lemon zest • ½ cup whole milk • ¼ cup sour cream Mix together dry ingredients. Beat butter, then add sugar until light and fluffy in a stand mixer. Mix in one room temperature egg at a time. Mix well. Add vanilla. Mix. Add lemon juice, lemon zest. Then milk and sour cream. Blend until fluffy. Add dry ingredients gradually. Don’t over mix just combine. Use rubber spatula to turn over mix in the bowl to get everything from the sides mixed. Line muffin pan with liners. Fill cupcakes 2/3 full. Remove from oven and cool before icing. May 2019
This is a very moist cupcake. Makes 15. Bake at 350 degrees 15-20 minutes. Raspberry Buttercream Icing • 1 cup softened unsalted butter • 3 ½ cups powdered sugar • 1 tablespoon heavy cream • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/3 cup raspberry preserves • 1 tiny pinch of salt In a stand mixer beat softened butter until smooth. Add powdered sugar, heavy cream and vanilla extract until well mixed. Add preserves and salt mix. Frost the cupcakes with a frosting tool. Garnish with a fresh raspberry. P.S. One could use this icing as a standard and change it up by using different kinds of preserve - blueberry, blackberry, strawberry to name a few and also with different flavored cupcakes - like chocolate! Wouldn’t that be yummy? Yes!

Combine chicken, grapes, pecans, green onions into a large bowl, toss to combine. Add mayo and a pinch of salt and pepper (more as desired). Coat well with mayo as you stir. Suggest to cover and chill an hour or two. Who can wait? Serve on small croissant with lettuce bed, tomato slice if desired. Keeps well, if it last this long - three days. Enjoy! P.S. This can easily be served as a party style finger food omitting lettuce and tomatoes by placing dollops on Ritz crackers or small bread. Don’t like croissants? Toast a slice of whole wheat or white instead.
Cincinnati Wins!
USRowing National Championships Compete in July!
T
he Clermont County Convention and Visitors Bureau will be partnering with USRowing to bring the USRowing National Championships to Cincinnati, OH. The event will take place at East Fork State Park in Bethel, OH, just 30 minutes east of Cincinnati. The park last hosted a USRowing event in 2017 and will be home to the National Championship from 2019 through 2021. Event dates are set for July 9-14, 2019. The USRowing National Championship will be a special event featuring North America's top natural rowing course and showcasing the top competitors in America aiming for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. In 2017, the USRowing Club National Championship was the first regatta in the prestigious US Lotman Challenge Series with major world class racing in Cincinnati, Boston and Philadelphia. In 2017, nearly 2,000 rowing athletes participated in Cincinnati from 114 clubs stretching across 28 states and several international countries. USRowing and the Philadelphia Gold Challenge Cup Foundation announced the new format for the third edition of the U. S. Lotman Challenge races, which will feature the USRowing National Championship as a leg in the race. This edition will cover three different race distances over the course of 2019 and the challenge will identify America’s premier scullers and award champions. This challenge will bring rowing’s biggest competitors to Cincinnati. “Clermont County and the Greater Cincinnati region is very honored to partner 32

with USRowing in hosting the National Championships for the next three years,” said Jeff Blom, President of the Clermont County Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Queen City is no stranger to championship regattas. Competition will take place at William H. Harsha Lake in East Fork State Park, which features a 2,000 meter, seven- lane buoyed course. Harsha Lake was also the home of USRowing Club National Championships from 20152017, USRowing Youth Nationals from 1995-2010 and National Collegiate Rowing Championships from 19821996. In addition, this venue hosts the yearly Midwest Junior Championship and Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club High School Championship Regatta in the spring.

“We are excited to bring our summer national championship event back to Cincinnati's Lake Harsha,” said USRowing CEO Patrick McNerney. “Lake Harsha has a long and storied history of hosting some of our nation’s top events. We look forward to working with the Clermont County Convention and Visitors Bureau to put on spectacular regattas for our athletes, coaches and fans, and to continue to invest in a great venue at East Fork State Park.” Most recently known as the USRowing Club National Championships, the event will drop “Club” from its title moving forward and be rebranded as the USRowing National Championships to reflect the re-integration of the elite-level race categories. Scheduled for July 9-14, 2019, the regatta also will be expanded to six days and will crown national champions in the U17, U19, intermediate and elite/senior categories. Rowers, coaches and fans are expected to travel from many states and several international countries to participate in this event, leaving direct tourism dollars in the Greater Cincinnati region and Northern Kentucky. Clermont County and the Greater Cincinnati region really enjoy hosting all the athletes and welcomes our visitors 34

Walking among giants at Bernheim “D By Marjorie Appelman
addy, I thought you said the giants were real,” maintained a little boy behind us on the footbridge stretching across a section of Nevin Lake.
“They are real,” the father assured him. “But they only come alive at night.”
“Can we come back in the night, then?” the boy asked. I silently echoed the child’s sentiments, because it only seems fitting to suspend one’s disbelief on a trip to the Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest near Bardstown, Kentucky. I mean, Andy’s toys come to life in the Toy Story series. When humans aren’t looking, don’t cows take on human qualities in cartoonist Gary Larson’s work? Why can’t we extend the same consideration to the giant trolls at the arboretum?
The trio of trolls, a special feature of the arboretum’s celebration of 90 years of existence, is just a part of the adventure of the forest. Miles of picturesque trails, a canopy tree walk and a fire tower are additional highlights. With the arrival of spring, now is a wonderful time to visit. The forest is open daily to visitors. Admission is free weekdays and $5 per car on the weekends. While the forest is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., the staff recommends arriving before 11 a.m. or after 3 p.m. due to the high volume of visitors. Hours for the visitor and education centers are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Bernheim Arboretum and Research is located at 2075 Clermont Rd, Clermont, KY 40110.
Making their home on the grounds of the 16,000plus acres are Mama Loumari, and Little Elina and Little Nis, her children, the newly-crafted creations of Danish artist Thomas Dambo. They are designed and positioned to appear in mid-story, as described on the artist’s social media sites. Envisioning Little Nis making his way through the cluster of trees near the water’s edge takes little imagination. His position, that of leaning over his reflection in the water, is naturally inquisitive. Around him, children and adults play and pose for pictures. Little Elina, a short hike away, uses a stone to carve out an image in the dirt. According to Dambo, she’s been inspired to draw a feather after seeing an eagle. Visitors of the scene dot her bracelet with gifts of flowers and stones to replace the original ones taken by previous guests. And still, a distance up the path, rests Little Nis and Little Elina’s expectant mother, Mama Loumari. The temptation to linger with her is strong, as she is reclining under a cluster of tall trees near a sacred circle. Here, the artist has created a detailed camp including a collection of pine cones, a wooden skull and various places for humans to sit. Propped up in one of the wooden chairs, a tiny visitor snacked on some chips as other visitors made themselves at home.
Visitors have been leaving gifts of flowers and rocks on Little Elina’s bracelet after previous visitors took the original stones incorporated by the artist, Thomas Dambo.

Summer Time and the Livin’ is Easy by Rita Heikenfeld
BLT Dip Summertime and the livin’ is easy! Especially when you can prepare foods ahead to tote to a barbecue or picnic. Here’s our favorite do-ahead recipes to make summer entertaining fun and stress-free.

Picnic Potato Salad Ingredients • 6 medium potatoes, about 2# or so • 1 cup chopped celery • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion • 1/3 cup chopped dill pickle • 1-1/4 cups mayonnaise • 2 teaspoons sugar • 2 teaspoons celery seed • 2 teaspoons vinegar • 2 teaspoons prepared mustard • 1-1/2 teaspoons salt • 3 hard-cooked eggs, coarsely chopped Instructions Cook potatoes in boiling salted water for 25 minutes or until tender. Drain. When they are cool enough to handle, peel and cube. Add celery, onion, pickle. Combine mayonnaise, sugar, celery seed, vinegar, mustard and salt. Pour over potatoes and mix well. Stir in eggs. Cover and chill thoroughly.
Chocolate Chip Pound Cake Ingredients • 1 box, yellow cake mix • 1 small box vanilla instant pudding • 1/2 cup Canola oil • 4 large eggs • 1 cup sour cream • 1 cup mini chocolate chips • Powdered sugar Instructions Preheat oven to 350. Beat everything but chocolate chips together well. Stir in chips and pour in sprayed Bundt pan. Cool 10 minutes and remove from pan. When cool, sprinkle with powdered sugar.
KEEPING FOOD SAFE: CHILL IT! When packing food for a picnic, remember that heat rises and cold sinks, so pack meat proteins on the bottom, and put ice packs on top. Or fill water bottles 3/4 of the way and freeze them. The nice thing about using water bottles is the ice in them may thaw enough to have some water to drink. Make sure leftovers stay thoroughly cold. Add more ice if necessary. May 2019

Horsin’ Around in Kentucky B
By Marjorie Appelman
eing at the Kentucky Horse Park invokes a sense of pride in being a Kentuckian, whether that title comes from being born and raised in the commonwealth or from moving here from Indiana before the age of six. Superior college basketball. Bluegrass. Bourbon. Arguably, all things synonymous with Kentucky. Perhaps the most indelible association, though, is with the horse. We cannot think of one without also thinking of the other. The Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, celebrating its 40th anniversary, honors that connection. Upon arriving, check the show schedule first to coordinate the day. The museums and indoor attractions will wait, while the outdoor attractions won’t. Worth seeing is The Parade of Breeds, presentations showcasing different breeds of horses, which are housed in stalls surrounding the show arena. You can expect to see an American Quarter Horse, an American Saddlebred, an Andalusian, an Appaloosa, a Clydesdale and many, many more. Not only that, you can learn the history of each, their strengths and the purposes for which they are best suited. Another worthwhile event is the Hall of Champions, which allows visitors to sit in an intimate gazebo setting while champion horses are individually escorted to the center and then
paraded around so visitors can take a closer look at the magnificent animals. Thoroughbreds Funny Cide and 1994 Kentucky Derby Winner Go for Gin are featured, as are American Quarter Horse Be a Bono and others. The personalities of the horses come through as the staff members share stories and video clips of some of the horses’ best performances. If you’re a fan of the beautiful draft horse, you will not want to miss the Big Barn, where these are housed. There, you can participate in a meet-and-greet with the animals and, a couple of times a day, you can even take a horse-drawn trolley ride through the park.
At the Kentucky Horse Park, you can compare your stride with that of a horse’s stride as you make your way down a sidewalk toward the statue of Man-O-War.
A children’s barn at the horse park provides an educational twist.
In addition to all the interactive, upclose-and-personal opportunities with the beautiful creature best associated with our commonwealth, the horse park features three museums. Naturally, you should expect to see memorabilia, trophies, equipment, artifacts and art. But you will also have the opportunity to try on silks and to catch a glimpse of a draft of the novel, The Black Stallion, by Walter Farley. Visitors to the Kentucky Horse Park will have access to more than they will ever be able to assimilate. Additionally, with the park celebrating its anniversary, expect the opportunity to enjoy special events, such as family fun nights, vintage market days, horse trials and more. Check out the website, www. kyhorsepark.com before planning your trip.

Various breeds of horses are showcased through performances, such as The Parade of Breeds, at the park.

Getting Your House Ready for
Out of Town Guests
By Sheri Mitchell
W
ith the summer months ahead and a more relaxed schedule many of us will have family or friends visit. Maybe now is the time to update a spare bedroom in preparation of your upcoming guests with some fresh updates.
1 2
Make the bed with clean linens and update any that are ripped or torn.
3
If there’s a closet in your guest room make space for hanging cloths and extra bedding. It’s not necessary to take the whole closet if you have other items in there – just about half. No closet? Clear out a chest or dresser or make room in a closet elsewhere.
What to do with that spare bedroom? Perhaps a new bed? Make sure to measure before you go shopping to get the best size to fit your space. Maybe you’d like a little bigger footprint or two twins – double check that not only the bed will fit but the mattress and box spring as well. Beware of those sharp corners and narrow hallways. If you’re uncertain ask your salesperson or have the area professionally measured. We offer design help at Verbargs as well as free measure check. Whether or not you purchase a new bed keep in mind to make the room as welcoming as possible. Here are a few quick tips: May 2019
4 5
Gather extra pillows and blankets. Some guests may be used to sleeping with two pillows so store them in a closet or chest. Fold an extra blanket and lay it nearby.
Buy or create a suitcase stand by clearing off a storage trunk/bench or have a folding stand ready for luggage. Put a few books near the bed in case they can’t fall asleep. If there’s an interesting book about local history or a subject that you especially liked even better!

Change it Up! Make your spare bedroom multi-functional as a study/guest room. Sleep sofas come in many shapes and sizes and colors – find just the right size and make this a cozy office with seating during the day and by night pull out the bed for sleep. Desks with drawers or a table desk for working with extra storage in the closet or in a chest for when guests arrive makes this one of the most versatile rooms in the house.
What about the bathroom? Before guests arrive a good thorough cleaning with fresh towels goes a long way and makes all feel welcome. Consider these additional tips:
1 2
If you have collected toiletries from hotels make use of them now and place in a basket on the sink or in their room – just in case they’ve forgotten something! Consider offering your guest different color towels so they know which ones to use.
No Spare Room? Make The Most Of Your Living Room! Not everyone has an extra bedroom or space for guests but still want to be hospitable. Consider a sleep sofa in your living room that can be pulled out in a crunch. Another nice furniture item is a storage ottoman for blankets and pillows that has casters and can be rolled away from the sofa when pulled out. One minute it’s your living room – the next it’s a bedroom!
An air mattress is also a good option for extra sleeping in a living area. If you presently own one make sure it’s in good condition without holes and if there’s time vacuum the surface so it’s dust free. Extra storage in a chest or cabinet can serve as space for their clothes or extra bedding – clear out a little space in your own closet or coat closet for hanging items.
More Welcoming Ideas! Make the most of the visit with some “extras” that we know will be appreciated!
1
Buy or make a few snacks like breakfast basics such as coffee, orange juice, fruit, granola, muffins and maybe a special coffee cake such as the famous Ruth Lyons Coffee Cake! Recipe below. Place a basket in the kitchen with snacks – my Aunt Pat in North Carolina always does this when we visit! Small individual snacks for those afternoon cravings or late nights of laughter and talking.
2 3 4 5
Create a list of activities that your guests might find interesting – things that are unique to your area; know what the hours and events are at local sites. Get some local magazines, brochures and maps together for free time if you are unable to be there as a guide – local bus or subway maps or additional directions for those guests that are driving. Leave important phone numbers such as emergency contacts – anything needed in a pinch. Write down household instructions; how does the remote-control work? What’s the deal with that newfangled alarm system? Give guests some pointers in case they’re stumped while you’re gone.
And Finally!
Ruth Lyons Coffee Cake Ingredients • 1 Cup Sugar • 1 Cup Brown Sugar • 2 ½ Cups Flour • 1 Teaspoon Cinnamon • 1 Teaspoon Nutmeg • 1 Teaspoon Salt • 3/4 Cup Oil • 1 Cup Buttermilk • 1 Egg • 1 Teaspoon Baking Soda Preparation Mix sugars, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. At this point if you’re making ahead, place these dry ingredients in a Ziploc bag or container and store in a cool, dry place and prepare the next morning. If not, proceed to #2. Spray a 13 x 9 dish with cooking spray and preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Add oil to the dry ingredients and stir until crumbly. Reserve 3/4 cup for the topping. Add the buttermilk to remaining mix then add egg and baking soda. Mix well and pour into a 13 x 9 pan. Sprinkle reserved mix over top. Bake 30 minutes – check at 25 minutes just in case your oven runs hot – tastes best if you don’t overbake.
Have a great time and prepare ahead for those family and friends you haven’t seen in a while and make the most of the visit. Speaking of ahead of time, I love to make a special treat for the next morning with a fabulous coffee cake recipe I found from the one and only Ruth Lyons. Part of it can be made ahead and mixed up the morning of and baked. Try this the next time you have overnight company – it’s easy and amazing!
