Equestrians compete in championship show Nearly 400 riders from seven states come to Clermont Sun staff
The warm-up arenas at Majestic Farm bustled with activity Sept. 22-25, as nervous riders warmed up their horses, practiced movements for their dressage tests and made final preparations before it was their turn to ride. Majestic Farm prepared for over a year to host the 2011 Great American Insurance Group/United States Dressage Federation Region II Championship, recognized by the United States Equestrian Federation. Dressage, which is likened figure skating, requires riders to compete a series of movements with their horses in front of judges. The difficulty of the movements depends on the level of the dressage test and riders must have excellent communication with their horses to be successful. Because the event acts as the championship for dressage riders in seven states, the goal for all riders was to be at the top of their game. “When you go to a championship, you know everyone has qualified to get here,” Heather Ferguson, of Michigan, said. “If you do well, you know your training paid off.” Ferguson said coming to the Region II championship allows riders to compete at a
different venue against different competitors. She said it’s an indication of how successful a rider has been during the year. “It’s about seeing how you compete against others at your level, and seeing how your training through the year has improved or not improved,” Dawn White, of Pennsylvania, said. White enjoys Region II competition so much, she switched regions temporarily so she could compete in the championship show. And while much of the fun comes from competing, for some riders the appeal of the show extends beyond the arena. “It’s fun because everybody comes to the one show,” Therese Evans, of Cleveland, said. “There’s great camaraderie.” Evans said the show is something everyone works toward through the year and, once the show starts, it is fun to see fellow competitors and friends in one place. The show brought nearly 400 equestrians to Clermont County, and they competed in several levels of dressage, from entry level to olympic level. Equestrians came from Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, West Virginia, Wisconsin and across Ohio. “It’s definitely a facility capable of handling such a large competition,” Ferguson

said about Majestic Farm. In addition to the competitions, the farm had a variety of food, shopping vendors, demonstrations and activities for competitors on site. The University of Findlay Dressage Drill Team, Bud Moore, Helen Trimeloni Side Saddle and Cincinnati Therapeutic Riding and
Horsemanship all gave demonstrations during the event. “The tent was full of competitors to watch,” Barbara McCarthy, show manager and director of horse operations at Majestic Farm, said. “It was wonderful.” McCarthy said the event ran smoothly, and even though the
Clermont County Humane Society dinner auction will benefit homeless animals Auction items are still needed for the Nov. 5 event BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff
The Clermont County Humane Society is gearing up for its 18th annual dinner auction to benefit homeless animals, which will be held at Norlyn Manor in Batavia Saturday, Nov. 5. “It’s one of our biggest fundraisers,” Kim Naegel, director of the humane society, said about the auction. “All the benefits help the homeless animals up for adoption in our adoption center.” Naegel said the event makes for a fun evening. Guests are able to browse silent auction items, bid on items they like, enjoy drinks,
a sit down dinner and participate in the live auction. Admission to the event is $35 per person or $280 for a table of eight. Naegel encouraged those interested in attending the event to purchase tickets soon because it does sell out. Naegel said the event first began as just a dinner with a handful of guests in attendance. Now, more that 250 guests attend the event each year. “It’s just so encouraging,” Naegel said. “And it’s so much fun to see people come out and support us.” She said fund-raising events like the auction make a significant impact on the humane society’s funds and
ensure that their doors stay open for animals in need. “If it wasn’t for these type of events we wouldn’t be able to do that,” she said. The humane society takes in thousands of animals each year and not only works to find animals a good home but also operates the county’s animal control program, sells dog licenses, helps educate the public about animals and more. Naegel said they are still looking for item donations for both the silent and live auction this year. The auction generally features a variety of items including artwork, weekend getaways, jewelry, pet items and more. Naegel said a Paul McCartney album, a security system and a trip for two to Mexico are examples of what has been donated

Batavia tweaks school start times Principals report smooth start to the school year BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff
Several schools in the Batavia Local School District have had to tweak their start and end times since the first day of school due to increased student enrollment, bussing issues and traffic. Superintendent Jill Grubb said the most significant change came to kindergarten start time, which was altered 15 minutes. After the changes, the school day runs from 7:10 a.m. to 1:35 p.m. for the high school, 7:50 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. for grades six to eight, 8:30 a.m. to 3:10 p.m. for fifth
grade, 8:25 a.m. to 3:05 p.m. for third and fourth grades and 9:15 a.m. to 3:55 p.m. for kindergarten through second grade. The changes came after transportation concerns popped up the first few days of school and went into effect Sept. 12. Higher enrollment, the removal of three bus routes, traffic due to the closure of SR 132 and an increase in overall traffic flow due to West Clermont Local School District eliminating high school bussing all had an impact. Other than the minor transportation issues, however, school principals reported a smooth start to the school year at the Sept. 19 board meeting. See Batavia, Page 3

already. She said auction items must be in by Oct. 29 so they can be included in the evening’s program. The humane society will also raffle several items including an iPod Touch, gift cards to restaurants and a grand prize trip for two to Los Angeles, Calif. Raffle tickets are $10 each or three for $20. They can be purchased ahead of time at the humane society, and individuals don’t have attend the event to be eligible to win. Doors will open and the silent auction will begin at 5 p.m. Nov. 5, dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the live auction will start at 8 p.m. “We look forward to it every year,” Naegel said. “It’s something fun for us to do.”

That number includes 21 new members of the Women’s Leadership Council (women giving $10,000 or more). Another important element of the campaign is the matching gift program for new and increased gifts. The match pool includes the Vickie Buyniski Gluckman Leadership Giving Challenge Match for new or increased gifts from women giving $2,500 or more and The Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile,
Jr./U.S. Bank Foundation Tocqueville Challenge Match for new or increased gifts of $10,000 or more. Other contributors to the matching gifts pool include Bill Butler, GE Aviation, HCS Foundation, PNC Foundation, and The Procter & Gamble Company. Other strategies focus on increasing membership in various Affinity Group societies – Tocqueville, Women’s Leadership Council, Women Investing in the Next Generation (WINGs), Emerging Leaders, and the Herbert R. Brown Society. The first “Strut Your Mutt” in New Richmond was a huge success, according to organizers. “We had over 500 people and 300 dogs participate,” said organizer Bonnie Morrison with Tri State CART, a non-profit disaster response team that focuses on the care of animals during times of local disaster. “We raised over $6,000 at the event and are now half-way to reaching our goal to purchase a mobile disaster vehicle to transport animals in crisis.” Among the highlights of the Strut was a huge pet parade down Front Street, competitions for best bark, best pet trick, best costume and many others. Visitors to the event had the opportunity to let their dog create a paw-print picture, visit with a pet psychic, have their pet micro-chipped, watch police dogs and agility dogs in action, and meet some of the animals at local rescue organizations that need a forever home. “I was so excited by the amazing turnout for the first Strut, we are already planning another one next year,” said Morrison. “Circle Sunday, Sept. 23 on your calendar for a paws-itively great afternoon to share with your four-legged friends.” Morrison said other animals

process, and I am pleased to be able to grant these awards.” Project Woman domestic violence shelter in Clark County was awarded $70,700, the Criminal Justice Program, V/W Division, was awarded $66,500, the county Court Appointed Special Advocates program will receive almost $27,700, and Witness/Victim Assistance Program in the Office of the Clark County Prosecutor will receive $41,100. Of the total awarded, about $3.4 million was provided through the State Victim Assistance Act with funding from Ohio’s Crime Victim Compensation Fund. Monies for the fund come from federal sources, court costs paid by defendants statewide, and driver’s license reinstatement fees. Administered by the Ohio Attorney General Office, the fund helps thousands of crime victims annually through grants to nonprofits and public agencies and eligible reimbursements to victims for some of the costs they incurred because of the crimes against them. The federal Victims of Crime Act provided the balance of the total grants announced today. Continued from page 1 “The start was relatively smooth except for the busses,” Batavia Elementary Principal Renee Munro said. “We had minimal tears from kids and parents.” Munro said the staggered start for kindergarten worked great, and once bus times were adjusted transportation went smoothly. Middle School Principal Susan Hakel said things ran smoothly there as well. The high school experienced the majority of the
issues, and Principal Jamie Corrill said a lot of it had to do with the fact that they have students driving themselves and taking the bus. “Some of it was just the added time it takes to do a double drop,” he said. In comparison to West Clermont’s transportation issues, Batavia administrators seemed happy their issues could be resolved easily enough, and despite higher enrollment, the schools have made the needed adjustments to keep things flowing smoothly.

Nick Owens has officially announced his candidacy for the Ohio House of Representatives in the newly created 66th District for the Republican primary election in 2012. Owens is a graduate of Batavia High School and the University of Cincinnati. Currently, Nick is in his last year of law school at the University of Dayton where he is scheduled to graduate this May. Prior to entering law school Nick Owens worked nearly five years for U.S. Representative Jean Schmidt with separate stints in her Cincinnati district and Washington, DC offices. “The most important issue facing Brown and Clermont counties today is jobs. The 66th Ohio House District deserves a representative in the state legislature who will fight tirelessly for jobs in Southern Ohio. The latest unemployment numbers of 9.1 percent for our state is completely unacceptable and while leaders in Columbus are working hard for Ohio, we must continue to do better,” stated Owens. “The citizens of Brown and Clermont Counties deserve the opportunity to the live the American dream and should not have to leave the State and their loved ones to find gainful employment. It is time for Ohioans of all backgrounds to work together and put our state back in the right direction and I’m prepared to roll up my sleeves and get right to work,” Owens said. Nick transferred to the University of Cincinnati's main campus where for two years he was a student equipment manager for the Bearcats football team. In his second year, Nick became the head student equipment manager to then Coach Mark Dantonio. At the age of 20, Nick became the first person in his immediate family to earn a college degree. Majoring in Finance and Real Estate, Nick graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Business with a Bachelor of Business Administration. Just days after completing his undergraduate education, Nick began his first involvement in Republican politics when he started volunteering for former State Representative Jean Schmidt in her initial Congressional campaign. Upon Congresswoman Schmidt’s special election to the United States House of Representatives, Nick was asked to be a staff assistant in her Cincinnati district office. After Congresswoman Schmidt’s election to her first full term, Nick was transferred to the Washington, DC office where he was promoted to the

After a few years of working on Capitol Hill, Nick decided to further his education and moved back home to Batavia where he continued working for Congresswoman Schmidt while preparing for law school. Nick began his graduate studies in May 2010 at the University of Dayton School of Law. He is currently enrolled in the School of Law’s accelerated law degree program, and is scheduled to graduate this May. During his last year of law school, Nick has worked for the Brown County Prosecutor’s Office where he has assisted in the prosecution of numerous criminal misdemeanor cases, including receiving a conviction during his first jury trial. Nick’s father, Rob, currently runs a small family-owned heating and cooling business in the Clermont and Brown County area, in which his mother Judy assists. Additionally, Nick has one sister, Stephanie, who is currently serving in the United States Marine Corps. She has achieved the rank of Corporal and has served one tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Som Tandon, MD and Plastic Surgeon, is performing mini face lifts for patients as an outpatient procedure at Mercy Hospital Clermont, greatly reducing the recovery time typically involved in such a procedure. A mini face lift differs from a full face lift in that it is a minimally-invasive procedure that causes the patient very little discomfort. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and the cost is also lower than a traditional face

lift. “The mini face lift allows patients to retain a youthful look without the effort of a full face lift,” said Dr. Tandon. “We tailor the procedure to meet the specific needs of each patient by focusing on specific trouble spots.” Mini face lifts can help to reverse the effects of aging, and patients can specifically focus on problem areas such as: neck, jowls, mid-face, nasolabial folds, and eyes. Dr. Tandon first studied plastic surgery in India and completed his boards. He then traveled to the United Kingdom to receive advanced training in his field. Over the course of five years, Dr. Tandon trained at the University of London, the University of Edinburgh, and the University of Dublin. He later traveled to the U.S. to complete a residency and fellowship in Plastic Surgery.

Clermont bus fares to increase in November The Board of Clermont County Commissioners has approved a fare increase that will impact riders of Clermont Transportation Connection (CTC) and contracted Metro routes 28, 29X and 82X. The BCC unanimously voted to approve a lesser fare hike than the $1.25 increase originally recommended; for typical adult riders, the fare for door-todoor, express, and Metro routes will increase by $.75 one way. CTC held a series of public meetings in 2011 to obtain input on the proposal to raise fares. “We have to rely on local contracts, federal
grants, and passenger fares to fund the bus system,” said CTC Director Ben Capelle. “Unfortunately, facing a 2012 deficit, our only option was to ask for a fare increase.” Prior to approving the request for the fare increase, BCC Vice President Bob Proud said the board struggled with making the fare increase fair to ensure the continued quality of the service both today and in the future. A complete list of approved fare increases will soon be available on www.ctc.ClermontCountyOh io.gov or call (513) 7327433.

Who is your favorite local historical character? From now through Thanksgiving, you will have the opportunity to vote for your favorite local historical character as part of the third annual Fall Back into Time contest and fund-raiser. “A total of 13 characters need your votes,” said event organizer Bev McClain with the Friends of Jennie Wade historical group. “Bicentennial committees, historical societies and others in five counties have nominated a character that represents their organization. Online voting is available at $1 a vote; the agencies will each receive monies their individual characters generate.” Votes will also be accepted at individual organizations represented in the contest. McClain said the Fall Back
into Time competition is a great way to support the numerous organizations that work to preserve our local history. “Local community members will be dressed as the historical characters they represent,” she said. Ralph the Diver is the character entered by the Chilo Lock #34 River Museum. Friends of Jennie Wade present Horace McElfresh and Captain John McClain, while the Kentucky Gateway Museum features Simon Kenton and General Sydney Johnston. The U.S. Grant Homestead Association presents General U.S. Grant. The Bracken County Historical Society has entered General George C. Marshall and the Brown County John Parker Society presents John
Parker. “This event is a great way to make history come alive while promoting the many historical treasures in this area,” said McClain. “All the organizations taking part win, by obtaining money that will help them keep admission costs down, and to provide needed repairs and upgrades to their facilities.” She said two televisions were purchased for the Chilo Lock #34 Museum by proceeds from past contest voting for Ralph the Diver, the top vote getter each of the past two years. located and by consolidating your assets. Let’s look at both these areas. To begin with, you might think it’s no big deal to keep track of your financial accounts. After all, no one lets these accounts just slip away, does he? Actually, you might be surprised: At least $32 billion, and possibly much more, of “lost” property (savings, investments, retirement accounts and so on) are in the custody of state treasurers and other agencies, according to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators. How do people misplace these funds? They might move from a town and forget to close a bank account. Or they might leave a job and not realize they’ve left behind money in a 401(k). However they do it, it happens — but you don’t want it to happen to you. Fortunately, it’s not hard to keep tabs on your various accounts — you just need to make a list. Where do you keep your checking and savings accounts? Where are your investments held? Do you have a retirement plan, such as a 401(k) with your current employer? How about any

your IRA and 401(k), you may find it easier to calculate these required distributions if they’re coming from just one provider, rather than multiple sources. But most importantly, when you consolidate your investments with one provider, you’ll find it easier to follow a single, unified investment strategy. A qualified financial advisor can look at all your assets and determine if you’ve got redundancies in your holdings and if you need to increase your diversification. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss.) Furthermore, once a financial advisor knows your situation, he or she can recommend strategies that are appropriate for your objectives, risk tolerance and time horizon. Get Organized Week lasts only seven days. But by using this time to begin organizing your finances, you could see benefits for years to come.

Organizing your finances well can pay off in many ways
Article submitted by S. Christian Wilks, an Investment Representative with Edward Jones, Milford.
The best weapon against terrorism is you! Ten years after the terrorist attacks on America, there have been dramatic changes in security efforts in this country. “September 11 was definitely a wakeup call,” said Clermont County Emergency Management Agency Director Beth Nevel. “Ten years ago, we watched in disbelief that our country was under attack; we watched in horror as thousands of our citizens died. Hundreds of responders also perished, trying to save lives during this horrid day of devastation. Our responders and military service personnel continue this fight against terrorism today.” “Another important part of our protection involves citizens,” said UC Clermont Associate Professor and terror ism expert Ed Bridgeman. “Today’s anti-terrorism efforts are more like neighborhood watches on steroids. Everyday citizens are our boots on the ground,” said Bridgeman. “In recent years we have had dangerous situations thwarted by cab drivers, and others who have noticed something strange in their neighborhood. People understand that anti-terrorism efforts don’t involve a Ninja waving a sword; it’s the man or woman on their way to work that notices something odd in their own neighborhood.” “As citizens, we remain the best front line defense that any community could muster against another act of terrorism,” added Nevel. “The Ohio Department of Homeland Security campaign of ‘See Something, Say Something’ remains our most effective public program. This program has been very effective in early detection and intervention for not only terrorism, but for reporting other hazards such as severe weather and local criminal activity.” The face of terrorism has changed markedly since Sept. 11, 2001. “Since then, we know that the enemy isn’t some one or some group we can easily locate and identify,” said Bridgeman. “The enemy is faceless; he could be anyone, living an ocean away or right next door.” “Terrorism, whether a lone act (Oklahoma City bombing) or September 11, 2001, has caused our local responders in Clermont County, to re-evaluate the risk, threat, vulnerability and re-enforce the capability of terrorism deterrence and response,” said Nevel.

We’re often asked why some holly trees never get berries. We ask if the plant is male or female, and often our customers have no idea, so the answer to their question sort of suggests itself. Imagine a couple trying to raise offspring if they’re not sure what gender they are! Most hollies need the opposite sex of just the right variety for pollination. Without a magnifying glass and a botany background it is hard to tell the male from the female plant (impossible if they’re not flowering). It is important to purchase hollies from a reputable nursery that is careful about plant labeling. To keep it simple we recommend buying hollies in pairs with one of each sex, which we like to think of as family planning. One male holly can pollinate three or more females of a similar variety if they are within a hundred feet or so of each other. The happy couple must both be the same variety (ilex meserveae) China Boy/Girl, Blue Princess/Prince etc.). Less common are the Winterberry Holly (ilex verticillata), which lose their leaves in winter but are covered with berries for spectacular winter interest. You’ll need at least one male. “Southern Gentleman” pollinates “Sparkleberry” and “Winter Red” females. “Afterglow,” “Red Sprite” and Gold-fruited Winterberry prefer to mate with “Jim Dandy.” To simplify all this, we sell a patented variety of evergreen holly called “BerriMagic” from Monrovia. This is simply a Holly shrub grown with one male and one female seedling in the same container, for the same cost as

a single shrub. With this holly you can plant only one and be guaranteed to have berries. It will also pollinate existing female hollies within 100 feet of where you plant it, so planting one might make a lovelorn female suddenly come alive in your yard. Growing hollies successfully requires acid soil. We suggest adding Espoma “Holly Tone” fertilizer to the planting soil and then fertilizing every year with “Holly Tone,” and also using composted pine bark mulch. The real challenge is getting hollies to root successfully in heavy soils. This takes some time, so you have to make sure you deep-root water hollies occasionally for at least a year after planting. Hollies such as China Boy/Girl or Blue Prince/Princess make terrific foundation plants because they are willing to maintain virtually any shape and size from 4 feet to 10 feet with yearly shearing. Monrovia’s “Berri Magic”
is a China Boy/girl combination. American Holly (Ilex fosterii or Ilex opaca) makes a terrific specimen tree, thriving in part shade and reaching a height of 30-40 feet while staying quite narrow. Burford Hollies are the most glossy, but need winter protection in the Ohio valley because they can’t tolerate extreme cold. Think about what a pleasure it would be to walk out into your garden next Christmas and gather an armful of festive holly branches for holiday decorating. Visit GoodSeed Farm and bring home a China Boy (and girl), one of the prettiest Hollies we’ve ever seen.

SCHLICHENMEYER THE BOOKWORM SEZ
You’re better off on your own. You’ve got a big project and that’s the conclusion you’ve come to. Sure, you’re prepared: you’ve studied it over, asked the professionals, and searched the internet. You’ve also gathered plenty of (unsolicited) advice and (un)helpful hints and, though things might get messy, you’re finally ready to start. By yourself. The same goes for Sheriff Hackberry Holland. A deranged genius has shown up in his county again but the FBI, the DEA, nobody’s interested in helping. In the new book “Feast Day of Fools” by James Lee Burke, Holland knows he’s on his own. The Mexican picked the wrong man to be tethered to. They had become separated, the two men, on their way through the desert to freedom. The guy at the other end of the busted handcuffs, Noie Barnum, was a Quaker pacifist with government secrets in his head and atonement in his heart. But the Mexican didn’t know that, and it got him torn apart. After Danny Boy Lorca heard the body being scattered across the southwest Texas desert, he slithered to the county jail to tell Sheriff Hackberry Holland. Danny Boy was prone to whiskeyfueled visions, but Holland knew that the Mexican’s death didn’t come from a bottle. Anton Ling had given Noie Barnum succor on his way through the desert – just like she gave to the illegal immigrants streaming past her shack. Ling had done a lot in her past to hurt her fellow man. Now it was time to do some good. The man called Krill wanted Noie Barnum in order to settle a score. It was Krill who tore the Mexican apart, but torture did no good. Krill wasn’t any

closer to catching Barnum, which meant that he was no closer to turning Barnum over to Josef Sholokoff, who didn’t want Barnum, so much as he wanted what Barnum knew. But Barnum was safe, hiding with Preacher Jack Collins, a ruthless killer who was well-known to southeast Texas, Sheriff Holland, and an oddly disinterested FBI. Collins knew who was chasing after Noie Barnum, and he knew why. He just had to figure out what to do about it… Reading “Feast Day of Fools” is an experience in yin and yang. It’s a beautiful poem shot full of lead. It’s like a picture postcard slashed with a bloody knife. It’s heartbreakingly gorgeous and sandpaperharsh, both at the same time. Author James Lee Burke’s new lawman, Hackberry Holland is an underemployed,
aging man with a past, part of which he can barely discuss and all of which comes back to haunt him daily. I liked this flawed new sheriff, and I liked the large cast of good guys and bad guys that surround him– mostly because the line between good and bad changes often in this fine novel. This is a heart-thumper, but beware that some of the scenes ain’t purdy. If you can handle that and you’re up for a wild ride through the sagebrush, then, “Feast Day of Fools” is a book to own. The Bookworm is Terri Schlichenmeyer. Terri has been reading since she was 3years-old and she never goes anywhere without a book. She lives on a hill in Wisconsin with two dogs and 12,000 books.
